Playoff matchups:
Caps-Leafs (1st ever meeting)
Pens-Jackets (2nd meeting. 1st in 2014 when Pens won in 6)
Habs-Rangers (16th meeting,last in 2014 when Rangers won in 6)
Sens-Bruins (1st ever meeting)

Hawks-Preds (3rd meeting. Last in 2015 when Hawks won in 6)
Wild-Blues (2nd meeting. 1st in 2015 when Wild won in 6)
Oilers-Sharks (2nd meeting. 1st in 2006)
Ducks-Flames (3rd meeting. Last in 2015 when Ducks won in 5)

Sucks seeing Leafs vs Caps over Sens, but anything is possible. Caps as 1 seed blew a 3-1 lead vs the Habs before blowing 3-1 leads was cool. Everything for Leafs at this point is a bonus since they're icing a BELOW cap floor team, and getting these rookies at least 4 games of playoff experience could go a long way in future seasons. Would be such a big upset if it did happen.

I have Hawks over Pens, but I'd still wanna see Ovechkin win a cup. Caps-Wild is an out of the blue matchup I wouldn't mind seeing.

Help me noob out guys.ive watched nhl for quite a long time but not diehard fan.How are the play-off matchuls decided?pitt is second in east and go up against 3-rd place team??Next round its already potentially first placed washington.Something totally different than in nba?

8 teams in each conference make the playoffs. Top 3 in each division followed by the next 2 best teams(put in the wild card spot).

The top division winner gets to play the worse of the 2 wild card teams. The other division winner plays the other wild card team. The other 2 teams in each division face off in the other 2 playoff matchups.

So East wise it'd be:
1st Metro(Caps) vs 2nd WC(Leafs)
2nd Metro(Pens) vs 3rd Metro(Jackets)
1st Atlantic(Habs) vs 1st WC(Rangers)
2nd Atlantic(Sens) vs 3rd Atlantic(Bruins)

Bettman probably wants Jackets-Wild finals the most. The season before a new expansion team enters the league, having the cup finals being the last 2 expansion teams going head to head, that'll make Bettman so happy.
