I couldn't imagine playing this type of Madden game (which is very good to me in its current state) 20 something years ago lol..I'm telling you younger cats the progression of Madden though not perfect is leaps and bounds better when I first started playing......

Madden back then has never delivered a perfect game and I don't expect now just make the best out what ya have and game on!!!!!
It's not even generational, You have old heads like you, me, ODogg, and Roadman who are more inclined to play the game, give our feedback on what we like and don't like and then roll with the reality of what the game is. Others who I won't name, but I know are in the same age bracket, take a much harsher approach in their analysis of the game, and their expectations of where they think the game should be by now limits their enjoyment of the game.

I think every age bracket has that same split opinion about Madden.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.

You're right there definitely needs to be a balance between fun and realism. I'm just asking for madden to do it better in terms of player movement/animations. There are games in the market today who do it.

Hopefully this is what the 3 new settings brings this year

In the end after I quit looking for it to be a real simulation and just started looking at it like being a fun video game I've enjoyed it a lot more.

And unlike many of you I still play Madden 17 a good bit and enjoy it. If Madden 18 is a little better and it's got some new stuff I'll be really happy with it.

I've already preordered the Madden 18 GOAT edition and I'm ready to ball..
Oh I understand that. Which is why in the end I can easily pick up Madden 17 again (or just play NCAA on the 360 and get my coach only fix)
I agree and have accepted it will generally always be Madden, which is why if they don't bring more of what I want it really isn't a must own day one for me. Not a slam on them, just a "what I want vs what is available"

They announce a coach only feature and that changes everything.

          Well 51 here
Sure games like Atari and Intellivision were fun and a lot of good memories (Heck the LED handhelds gave great times.) but like you said.. it's been years since then.

I'm personally not expecting a 100% true simulation of what we see on TV at all.
I'll never complain about sock color or blades of grass being wrong, but I'll sure point out how Joe Blow plays as well as Tom Brady etc...
Those are the areas that are fair game IMO.

I give EA credit that they have improved the past 2 years and had a pretty big hole to climb out of. That is a plus. Just hope they continue to add more sim aspects and especially a deeper franchise mode WITH a coach only option like NCAA.

In the end I'm sure if TMW league fires up I'll be there....I just won't play much SP without a coach mode.

EDIT: Just caught up with more info on the game and am a bit more intrigued. (Still want Coach mode though lol )

            37 here.

I was a hardcore 2k guy. That game wasn't perfect and didn't have a perfect simulation of football.
But it was fun. It had enough realism to make me feel immersed into the NFL world.

That's all I want with Madden. Fewer quirks. Improved animations. More depth to the franchise.

I could care less if the cleats match the gloves..(i know that is important to some.)

Put enough slickness on it to make me feel like I'm playing a real NFL game. Not an Arena football game or some glorified 7 on 7 drill.

            Make the trenches matter.
Make the teams matter and differences in players.

Too often, you can't the difference between the 5th QB and the starter...

            Ah well.

30 here (just to add to the age bracket polling)

See, I'm actually totally on the other side

The gap/faults in realism when it comes to approaching a SIM game is what I CAN understand; I have a good understanding and respect for how difficult it must be to create a game that properly represents/simulates NFL football, with all that entails.

And I won't go into details, but what I mean by that is that there are such high degrees of development, randomness and variance in football when it comes to strategy, technology, physical conditions etc etc etc... that regardless of how hard Madden tries, it will never come close to providing this experience on a console (without it feeling stale/outdated after a short while).

What I DON'T understand is the other side of spectrum, I don't understand how we're in 2017 and things like the correct socks or equipment are still an issue.

See, developing features requires resources, money, skill and development time. All of those are true for making the game more SIM which is a challenge, but all they need to make the "frosting" on Madden be better is to allocate a resource to it, just that.

Having correct uniforms or a wide set of customization options should be a given in this day and age. And I don't think anyone would make this a UNIFORMS VS. GAMEPLAY discussion, because the two are not exclusive; the issue is only one of those two presents clear challenges as to why it is difficult to implement...

Making the game PLAY better is a huge challenge, making the game LOOK better should be well within the realm of possibility for Madden in 2017; and I'm willing to go as far as saying that even those who say they don't care at all about uniforms or socks would "feel" the game plays better if all these things we properly implemented in Madden + the current state of how the game plays.

I'm 27 and I feel largely the same but I think since the transition to 360/PS3 that stance has kind of changed for me. If you showed 7-year old me playing Madden 97 on SNES today's Madden it would be absolutely mind-blowing. Hell, just going from Madden 2000 on the N64 to Madden 2001 on the PC and then Madden 2002 for the Xbox was mind-blowing in itself. But having played so much of those Madden's from 2002 to 2006 and I look back at the progression of those and feel like Madden (or football gaming in general) could be so much further than it is. I still play and love MVP 2005 but when I look at The Show, it looks exactly like what I would have expected MVP to look like given it had been able to stick around. It seems like every other sport had a game continuing to make those strides but Madden had that huge period of time where they severely stumbled and fell behind. I feel the exact same way about NBA Live and 2K Baseball. 2K Baseball was never a game that felt like it took those steps either and it eventually died out. I enjoyed NBA Live 10 a little bit but it was the same thing where it felt like a previous gen game with better graphics and it's still trying to make its way back.

Maybe it's the youngin' in me being stubborn or some of that good ole fashioned millennial entitlement but even with the strides it's taken in recent years in producing a solid football title, it will still always be hard to ignore the idea of where football gaming could, and potentially should, be right now. But the reality is this is where it's at now and hypothetical scenarios are irrelevant to the current state and future of the game. I've accepted it for the most part and really just want to see the game continue to get better and better each year but there still are certain things where I can't help but have the first thing that comes to mind is "how is this still an issue in 2017?."

Good point Deuce, when looking at things from a incremental improvement perspective, not due to newer/more powerful systems but rather due to inherent football content in the game, I guess Madden does come out sorely lacking (with regards to the bottom line of additions/substractions) when comparing 2000 vs 2017.

Maybe they want to make the game so SIM that they want us to approach it with QB mentality of "short term memory"
"Forget the past and just focus on what we're selling you for this edition"

I think that's the healthiest way to approach/enjoy Madden, in a vaccum. There's a lot of history with this game for us diehard gamers but I think the fact is we will never get to a point where Madden has "catched up" to our idea of what it is supposed to be.

So far, I'm older than all of you put together. (nah, just kidding)

I started out playing with those electronic football games with the stick figures, photo electric football(think easy bake oven with a lightbulb) and talking football.

Atari started with 3 vs 3 football, kinda funny looking back. I don't play many sports games outside of football and basketball because I don't own a PS. Personally, I feel the 2k series, game play, has gone downhill for the past few years, but that is my opinion. i didn't get into the 2k football series until later on. I did enjoy the realism of the game.

I'm not much into socks or uni's either and from where I sit, I don't think they put much stock into it because it's not a back of the box item and not where they put the top resources at the moment. Could they? Sure, will they, who knows?

This year, I felt the game play was much better and kept me hooked longer. I finished 8-8 with a recent CFM with the Packers and Rodgers hit 67% of his passes with 40 Td's and 20 int's. A bit much on the INT end, but pretty much realistic on the other numbers. I finished the WC game and lost to Brees and the Saints. Also, I know someone mentioned about 5th string QB's vs 1st stringers. This year, you could tell the difference more vs previous years, but still needs improvement. In the last game, Brees missed a lot and hit 63% of his passes. Here's the thing, this game was built and tested on default sliders. If you go one click from default either way, you will have those wacky un NFL games galore.

I'm glad there are people carrying and wearing the passionate flag for CFM(it is lacking in features) and game play to hold them accountable. At my advancing age, I just don't have the time or desire to sit for a game for hours(I know there are save points) when there are other more important things happening in this so called life. My secret is that I sim the off seasons, it works for me until I get into the CPU offseason logic garbage.(happens a lot)

A look back from an "older guy."

Some Madden NFL 18 Game Style Details Revealed - Arcade, Simulation, Competitive

Yup. 43, here. Most jarring football video game transition of my life was from NFL 2k5 to madden 06. Lol. That was the WORST year of my life! [emoji6]. That being said, 06 was decent, actually, and as many have mentioned, the franchise was pretty good, there. But, yeah, madden really grew slowly year to year. U know, they lost a year when moving from ps1 to ps2, I believe. They lost a year when moving from Xbox to 360, as well. That first attempt on 360 was god awful and roughly unplayable. I think that might've been the time that I really got into FIFA. Lol.

But, madden started to get better. I think there may be heavy issues with the head guys, there. U know, the suits that want the 'money making' back of box features without realizing how much work needs to be done to the bare bones stuff (animation, physics, locomotion, etc). Rex's team has definitely stepped up, imo, and it's been interesting to see his vision move forward. And, I'll continue to say, their first implementation of the infinity engine with M13 was actually quite good. It had its glitches, but the animations during gameplay were actually decent. The default tuning was quite off, unfortunately, but with the right sliders, I saw all sorts of animations and truly saw an 'infinite' amount of tackles instead of the same old canned animations. I was disappointed with 25, as they kind of went away from that idea, and to be fair, a lot of people didn't like it (I still don't understand this. m13 finally moved the game in the right direction for me, lol, more physics based similar to FIFA, but c'est la vie).

But since 25, they have made improvements every year. 16 was totally solid, imo. Perfect, no, of course not. But, the fact that they added WR/CB interactions, this was a first. 17 added some extra controls to jukes and whatnot and overall, jukes work a little better. And, with 16 and 17, I think, similar to some posters, here, I finally took the attitude of 'just play football.' Lol. Don't worry about this funky animation. Don't worry about your stupid RB that just ran out of bounds for no reason after catching a ball in the flat. 'Just play football'. And, honestly, 16 and 17 both allow u to 'just play football'.

So, I'm pleased with the last several years. And, again, curious to see if I notice legacy issues cleaned up as Rex has stated they cleaned up a lot of those. I'm glad they've scrapped the '3 year plan' also. Lol. Every 3 years, getting a completely new build or engine? No thanks. Keep building on what u got. Keep cleaning the underneath junk under the hood, and add stuff when u can. As an avid FIFA player, as well, I will say, if they could drop that FIFA engine in, change some ball physics from soccer to football, I think I'd love it. Lol. FIFA 17 was totally solid, imo, and a completely enjoyable game from head to toe.

I couldn't imagine playing this type of Madden game (which is very good to me in its current state) 20 something years ago lol..I'm telling you younger cats the progression of Madden though not perfect is leaps and bounds better when I first started playing......
I too am 47 and I do think age and our background plays a bit of a role in how we view the game.

What's telling to me is I don't notice anyone suggesting to people that can find some way to accept Madden to stop but there's a consistent theme of people that accept Madden suggesting to those that don't, to move along, be less vocal, try a different approach or whatever. There are countless games that I enjoy, accept , etc and I couldn't care less about what others post about those games for the most part. Sure if someone was just posting lies about a game I enjoy that would likely elicit a response from me but outside of that, I don't get it. There are people that readily admit they pretend this or that to accept Madden and that's their choice but it's bizarre to me when they suggest other people follow suit. As far as age goes, I presume most of us are adults of varying age ranges, so it seems there are adults suggesting to other adults, pretending or ignoring reality might make Madden more acceptable. This not so subtle suggestion that if you don't accept Madden, there is something else you can do, is absurd to me because it places no onus on EA Tib. Suggesting no matter what EA Tib claims, any disappointment or unmet expectations are supposedly the gamers fault, reminds me of that flashback with Peter Griffin and Tinkerbell.

Just a few facts, Madden is not in a sports simulation video game vacuum, there are other current top sports sims out there that replicate various elements of their sport better than Madden does NFL aspects and there have been past NFL sims, including past Maddens, that have done the same. That's what should set the bar for expectations, not "agendas", hating, perfection, football development being hard, entitlement or any other bs, just what is currently being done and has been done in applicable video game spaces.

One last point, I think what often gets lost on OS is that for posters like me, most Madden discussion is nothing more than discussion, there aren't any ulterior motives or "agendas". For me the discussion of Madden and by default, NFL gaming in general, is just that, discussion, no different than being on a forum about a reality show, sports or any other thing which discussion has little to no impact on. Madden is what it is and that's on EA Tib, they make it.

I appreciate the perspective roadman,. The cpu qbs will miss and theres a slight difference between great and average, however on all pro default user qbs are plug and play, literally from a throwing accuracy standpoint it does not matter. If anyone says differently i would question their sanity.

So when ea says misses arent fun and then in the same compàny line bs says Madden 15 16 and 17 were for the hardcore simulation crowd x. I think its very reasonable to be a little upset.

                              Completely kills immersion.

I agree with this, too, but the way I approach it, user experiences can be different from person to person too.

For me, Rodgers hitting 67% of his passes with 40td's with 4000 yds passing is very similar to his stats last year. (except for this user throwing 13 more picks)

Someone else that has different skills than mine may have better stats than I do with Rodgers.

You are entitled to question my sanity all you want.

I didn't say whether different people could or can't be upset, I specifically recall stating to wear the banner with whatever passion you have.

Sorry if you misinterpreted my post.
