Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Ugh hopeful that maybe the injury to Allen will be short in duration, but if Coach Geezy is grimacing on the sidelines that cannot be a good sign.

Outside of the injury, a great start to the season for the Wave. Dunbar had a great debut unleashing the 3-4. It was better than even I expected.

I was a little surprised to see Brown Jr. not get more touches especially with what he did do with his lone touch. Alas I feel that a lot of this season is going to hinge on the Allen injury. I think McBride can be a suitable replacement (despite the paltry numbers in this one), but without Allen I still think this team making a NC run takes a huge hit.

Hang in there my friend. As others have mentioned the pictures as always look amazing. Love that you got to play on the Smurf Turf.

Loving this as always my friend! Best of luck!

Hopefully good news out of the trainers in a few days but if not then hopefully McBride can sack up and lead the squad.
You know what makes Smith's performance all-the-more special? The fact that I didn't user-control him much at all.

I have had one other game from a defender that I can remember like that, the 23 tackle game by FS Lee Palmer that I mentioned in the game story. But in that case, that was back when I used to user-control the free safety on every play. In fact, that was the game that sparked my rule change that required me to use a defensive lineman for one quarter, a linebacker for one quarter, a DB other than a safety for one quarter, and a safety for one quarter.

Smith was just a man on a mission on this night.

Absolutely, go right ahead! Can I make one selfish special request though? Please use players in the respective year they graduated if possible. I don't want to read about Reggie Moore being drafted in 2020 or WR Brandon McIntyre being drafted in 2018. lol

I have a synopsis of each graduating class on my front page here, but as you know, it obviously isn't serving its purpose right now with Photobucket down, so if you need some names/player info, let me know.

Yeah I don't know what got into Smith in this one. He plays strong safety in our base 3-4 and plays as our slot corner when we go to nickel and dime sets. He was absolutely amazing. One of the best performances I have ever seen.

As for Allen, it was gut-wrenching. It was weird how it happened too. The play is over, I am at the play call screen getting my next play called, and then all of a sudden the announcer says "we now take a break in the action as he is still down on the field," then it cuts to Allen being looked at by trainers while I am on the play call screen. Never seen that happen like that before.

They did do a number of the front seven in the running game though - if Tulane's going to only put up 250 yards of offense the defense is going to be on the field a lot longer than they were in this one.
Yeah I hated to see Allen go down, but from a story-telling standpoint, it is very realistic. Last year he tore his labrum, and it was listed as a six week injury, which in my opinion is unheard of and indicates no surgery was involved. So it feels very real that he's paying for it now with the setback.

After you pointed out the stats, I went back and looked and I never even realized it - we only ran 39 offensive plays in that game. It was really an odd game, where they dominated the stat sheet and time of possession, but we kept coming up with 4th down stops and turnovers to conclude drives.

I was happy with the defense for sure, but you're absolutely right - we must improve versus the run. We had a lot of issues with our run fits from the second level, with this 3-4 alignment being more gap filling-oriented. We can’t afford to allow backs to gash us like that if we want to contend this season.

(Had to comment on the little Kay Adams snippet: she's the reason I watch Good Morning Football aside from my boy Nate Burleson defending my Lions)

      Good luck against TCU!
I agree with you in that we have enough weapons to get through this without Allen.

I did not think we would come out in week 1 and hold a team like Boise St. to only 10 points, but I will say we were very fortunate with several key stops. And I wasn't able to fit it in to the game article, but they also had a touchdown (maybe two) called back for holding.

We will have to play much better versus TCU, who you will soon see is very, very good on paper.

And yes, Kay Adams is a fixture on my TV on weekday mornings, one of my favorites; I just had to give her a shout-out some kind of way and introduce her to this storyline.

      Thanks man.

As you know, I capture everything with my El Gato capture card. I have discovered that the best camera shots are the ones where the game uses its "auto-focus" feature, which automatically happens when you zoom in close and makes the background appear a little fuzzy. Very rarely will I use a shot without a blurry background.

I upload everything to Photobucket using the 640x360 size option. I then go to edit photo, slightly up the sharpness a few notches and slighty up the brightness a couple of notches, and this creates my finished product.

I didn't do a great job of it in this last game, but I try to focus on capturing as many non-game play shots as possible, which is typically what you see a lot of in real life game stories.

I also put a lot of time into editing the equipment of both my team and my opponents', making sure everyone's stuff look realistic/modern for their potential photos.

Post-play celebration/frustration shots are my favorites along with shots that show players making facial expressions in reaction to being hit.

Yeah I didn't want to make the game story too much about Allen, so I kept it vague and I guess somewhat realistic as far as a coach not having all the injury info immediately like it is presented in this game. Glad you picked up on the one hint I threw out there though that this isn't just a "rub some mud on it" injury.

Our offense went into a shell once Allen went out and I have no idea how Michael Brown Jr. became such a non-factor. I think I just lost confidence and stopped attacking once Allen went down; I will need to change that moving forward. With a young QB under center, a RB catching passes out of the backfield should be his best friend.

Losing Allen was a punch in the gut, but I still think we can win it all if we just focus on one game at a time. Don't forget, we won our first of two national titles with an 80 overall true freshman QB back in 2016. We just need the supporting cast, including RB Tony Tompkins, to step it up, and hopefully the defense continues to play well.

      We’ll get through this.

Thanks all for the great feedback! On a side note, I am in communication with Photobucket and hopefully we get the issue with my pictures (as well as several other posters here's pictures) resolved soon. Apparently it is a mass issue across multiple platforms.

Ouch...can't blame coach Geezy for calling a few extra ladies when you get bad news like that. I was worried it was the same shoulder :/ at least its not the entire season. Hang in there my friend! Like you pointed out in your response to me you've gone some incredible places in the past with young quarterbacks. You got this.

Yeah it was pretty upsetting yet realistic to see him go down with the same injury. And as I pointed out in my previous reply, the way it happened was so dramatic, with there being a brief pause before the game acknowledged he was hurt.

Hopefully Jimmy McBride is ready to step it up.

On a completed unrelated note, someone on this thread pointed out the name Michael Brown on my team and the meaning behind it. How's this for eerie -

Literally two days before I played my first game of the season, an armored truck service driver by the name of Jimmy McBride was shot and killed in New Orleans. I know this isn't report related, but man, I just had to somehow point that out on here. Crazy.

Thanks man...I feel like if we can get past these next two, at #11 TCU and vs. #6 Notre Dame, we should be fine. The schedule softens up considerably after that. We need the supporting cast to really step it up in the meantime.

2004: Former Tulane great Matt Forte rushed for 97 yards while also accounting for 38 yards as a receiver out of the backfield the last time the Green Wave faced TCU.

Last Meeting: Exactly 20 seasons ago, Tulane outscored TCU 14-3 in the fourth quarter en route to a 35-31 upset win at Forth Worth. Former Green Wave RB Matt Forte accounted for 135 yards from scrimmage and former QB Richard Irvin threw for 5 touchdown passes as the Wave eliminated the Horned Frogs from bowl eligibility, ending a streak of six straight bowl appearances by them at that time.

                    2023 Season Recaps:

: After coming into last season with national championship aspirations, Tulane finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 10-4 record and ranked #20 in the final Coaches Poll after defeating Iowa 47-31 in the Capital One Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The team got off to a horrid 0-2 start last season, their worst start in 13 years, and injuries to starting QB Bryce Allen and #1 WR Brandon McIntyre at mid-season further derailed their year, which included a 36-17 blowout loss to eventual national champion Florida in the SEC Championship Game. Despite losing Allen to yet another injury in last week's season-opening victory, the Wave will be looking to get back into the national title picture this season and they return 8 starters on offense from last season and 7 on defense.

: TCU finished the 2023 season with an 11-2 overall record, winning the Mountain West Conference title by virtue of a 26-19 overtime win over Boise St. last weekend. Behind it's nationally #2 ranked rushing attack and #4 ranked defense of last season, the team would go on to fall to Texas 21-19 in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing the year ranked #9 in the Coaches Poll. Hoping to capture its first ever national championship, the Horned Frogs return 8 starters on offense, including QB Marcus Matthews. The team also returns 6 starters on defense, along with former Green Wave CB Pacman Johnson, who will be making his debut with TCU after transferring there following the 2022 season.

Game 2, Year 15 (2024 season): #12 Tulane Green Wave at #11 TCU Horned Frogs

                      #12 28 -- 2-0
                      #11 23 -- 0-1

Tulane junior DB Jonathan Smith, a Texas native, scored Tulane's first touchdown for a second week in a row, out-racing TCU QB Marcus Matthews on a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown that tied the game at 7-7.

QB Jimmy McBride and DB Jonathan Smith star as #12 Tulane holds off late rally to knock off #11 TCU 28-23 | Redshirt freshman signal caller steady in his starting debut as Green Wave wins second straight road game to begin the season | Yet another interception return touchdown by Smith helps team gain early momentum | Wave will seek to avenge last season's loss to Notre Dame in next week's home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome

Fort Worth, Texas -- #12 Tulane was in unfamiliar territory, coming into Saturday afternoon's game as underdogs for a second straight week along with a new player under center. But a gritty performance by redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride along with another strong day from emerging star DB Jonathan Smith helped the Green Wave outlast #11 TCU in a wild 28-23 victory at Amon G. Carter Stadium. McBride, making his debut in place of injured senior QB Bryce Allen, finished the game 22 of 31 for 259 yards along with two touchdowns (1 rushing, 1 receiving), helping to pace the Wave to its second straight road win versus a Mountain West Conference team to start the season.

Tulane redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride accounted for two touchdowns in his first start in place of injured senior QB Bryce Allen.

The game got off to a horrid start for the visiting Wave though.

TCU QB Marcus Matthews' 60-yard touchdown hook-up with RB Justin Jones on just the game's fourth play from scrimmage gave the 4 1/2 point favored Horned Frogs an early 7-0 lead.

But just like last week, Tulane was later able to get a shot of momentum from its defense, and in particular, Smith.

After the two teams traded possessions, the former junior college transfer was able to step in front of Matthews' pass attempt to WR Dedrick Rogers to pick it off and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown that tied the game up at 7-7 late in the first quarter. It was the second touchdown of the season for Smith, who is in his second season with the Wave and grew up just 3 hours away from TCU in Bellaire, Texas.

"He's playing about as well right now as I have seen a defender play. I haven't seen a safety play like this since Dre Harris," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy, referring to the current Green Bay Packer and the team's former starting safety from 2015-2017.

"Every once in a while, you find a guy that just seems to have a nose for the football and a knack for the big play, and this young man is starting to emerge as that guy."

Moments later, after the Wave defense came through with a fourth down stop by stuffing Jones in the backfield on 4th and 1, the Wave offense would awaken out of its slumber late in the second quarter. To conclude a 12-play 84-yard march that lasted over four minutes, McBride scored on a goal line option-keeper that gave the Wave a 14-7 lead, its first lead of the game. McBride wasn't done.

Late in the third quarter, following an interception by Green Wave junior CB Tyler Harrison, the Green Wave would start pulling away. A 7-play 50-yard drive concluded with McBride finding FB J.J. Williams wide open in the flat for a 4-yard touchdown that made the score 21-10 with 1:45 remaining in the third quarter.

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride's 4-yard touchdown pass to true freshman FB J.J. Williams made the score 21-10 in the third quarter. The scoring hook-up was both McBride's first career touchdown pass and also Williams' first career touchdown.

"You can tell as the game went on that Jimmy was getting more and more comfortable with his reads and also becoming more and more confident," said Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd.

"We wanted to throw in a lot of high percentage passes into the game plan and we looked very efficient today."

True freshman RB Michael Brown Jr. was the main benefactor of Tulane's reliance on the short passing game on Saturday, as he was McBride's favorite target and finished with a game-high 8 receptions for 99 yards.

For the second consecutive week, a long second half touchdown run by junior RB Tony Tompkins helped blow the game open for the Green Wave, but TCU would not go away.
The game would seemingly get put away early in the fourth quarter when RB Tony Tompkins slashed his way through the TCU defense for a 54-yard fourth quarter touchdown run that made the score 28-10 with 8:05 remaining. Tompkins finished the game with 124 rushing yards on 21 carries, however, despite his long touchdown, the Horned Frogs would not go down easy.

Matthews quickly put his team back in the game when he found WR Alvin West for a spectacular 56-yard touchdown versus Smith in one-on-one coverage downfield. The big play made the score 28-16 with still over 7 minutes remaining.

After the TCU defense got a stop defensively, their offense got the ball back down by 12 with just over four minutes remaining, backed up to their own 5-yard line following a great punt by Terry Alexander. However, Matthews would lead his team on an 11-play 95-yard drive that concluded with a touchdown toss to star WR Dedrick Rogers that made the score 28-23 with 1:45 remaining. Matthews, who finished the game 19 of 30 for 353 yards to go along with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions, hoped to get the football back again for a chance to complete the comeback.

Following an unsuccessful onside kick attempt that was corralled in the air by Green Wave TE/FB Carl Booker, the Horned Frogs defense needed a stop if they wanted to get the ball back to Matthews and their red-hot offense. But it wasn't meant to be.

A second down pass completion from McBride to WR Brandon McIntyre gave Tulane a first down at the TCU 20-yard line with a minute and a half remaining and caused the Horned Frogs to use its second timeout. Then Tompkins' 12-yard carry gave the Green Wave a first down at the TCU 8-yard line, causing the the Horned Frogs to exhaust their final timeout and in effect, clinched the game for his team.

"We knew this team was not going to go away easily at home," said Geezy.

"It would have been nice if the game wasn't as dramatic at the end but like I always say, you take wins anyway you can grab them. It wasn't always pretty, but we got the job done on this tough two-game road stretch to start the season."

Tulane (2-0) will host Notre Dame (1-1) next week at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The Fighting Irish defeated the Green Wave last season, getting a defensive stop at the goal line on the final play of regulation to come away with a 30-25 decision in rainy South Bend.

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride's gutsy performance in his first career start earned him Player of the Game honors.

TCU QB Marcus Matthews caught DB Jonathan Smith and the Tulane defense blitzing and made them pay with this 60-yard first quarter touchdown pass to RB Justin Jones, who was lined up in the slot and was wide open on a seam route.

Smith stepped in front of TCU star WR Dedrick Rogers for this interception which was returned 50 yards for a first quarter touchdown, Smith's second touchdown of the young season.

Horned Frogs redshirt sophomore CB Pacman Johnson, who transferred to TCU from Tulane following the 2022 season, celebrates after he recovered RB Tony Tompkins' fumble on a second quarter punt return. The play by the former Green Wave player led to a field goal that cut his team's lead to 14-10 just before halftime.

Redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride played like a veteran, throwing for 259 yards and a touchdown while also scoring a touchdown on the ground via a goal line option play.

In addition to recording a pick-six in back-to-back weeks, Smith also matched last week's sack total by taking down Matthews for a third quarter sack on a blitz from the nickel back position.

Green Wave RB Michael Brown Jr. was McBride's favorite target as the true freshman caught passes from out of the backfield and also in the slot, finishing with 8 receptions for 99 yards on the afternoon.

TCU senior WR Alvin West jumped over Smith to make a spectacular catch on a desperation heave before diving into the end zone for an emphatic touchdown that made the score 28-16 with 7:41 to play.

Rogers showed off amazing footwork, dragging his feet inside the boundary for this 14-yard touchdown that made the score 28-23 with just under two minutes to go.

Senior DT Mikelangelo Daniels and true freshman OLB Sean Williamson along with the rest of the Green Wave sideline celebrate following RB Tony Tompkins' game-clinching first down carry.

Great win on the road. McBride did a pretty solid job out there. Tompkins with another great day running the ball. Most of all Smith with the INTs this season

Nice to see McBride performing well in his first career start. Looks like Brown Jr is going to be a threat this year, nice job getting him involved! Solid start to the season, I wonder if Tulane will be the underdog for a third straight week. If so I hope another solid win over Norte Dame will earn them respect.

That's a strong win on the road over a tough team. Great to see the young QB step up to the challenge and Michael Brown seems like he's going to be huge to keep the chains moving.

Again, the pictures you take are top notch!

Yes, very solid win overall, no better way to put it.

Jonathan Smith, to me, has been the story of the season so far. He just seems to be a guy that's in on almost every play. He is absolutely thriving in his role as strong safety and sub-package corner. I hardly ever user-control him, which makes what he is doing right now all the more impressive.

Brown Jr. is becoming one of my favorite players on the team. I haven't had a back that catches this well in a very long time, not just on dump-offs, but also on the intermediate routes as well. With the young McBride under center, a guy like Brown Jr. is just what the doctor ordered. I'd be shocked if he doesn't lead us in receptions this season.

As alluded to in the game story, I really feel like I got more comfortable with McBride as the game went on. If he keeps playing well, I'm really going to have a tough call to make once Allen returns. If we are undefeated and McBride is rolling, do I disrupt chemistry? I guess we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Thanks for the compliment on the pics...I really enjoy capturing moments in this game. It's amazing how well these XBOX 360 football games have held up visually over the years.
