Damn, that's a hell of a haul this early in the season. Hopefully that big DT can anchor the nose of the 3-4 defense you've implemented this year. I know that the 3-4 isn't very common in college football but for my MTSU dynasty I want to transition to the 3-4. Being a New England Patriots fan, that's the defense I've grown up watching and learning about the most.

Nice early signings! It would be great to land those top safeties after they visit this week.

I am back in town and finally all caught up on this beauty. What a solid all around fantastic win by the Wave against TCU. McBride really stepped up. It really seems like the offensive and defensive schemes are really starting to become what was visualized when they were first installed. I think we may be entering a period where we are talking multiple national championships not just one....

Some great early signings and I would say a sign that the rest of the nation is starting to take notice of who the new powerhouse is going to be in the coming decade. I love the linbackers and Callahan looks good for the nose tackle position although in the ideal world he would be a little bigger.

Loving this as always! Looking forward to the next game! Beat the Irish!

Yeah it is a very interesting defense. It isn't commonly used, so I do encourage others to take a stab at it if they're looking for a change of pace. It just feels as though it offers a lot more strategically.

Hopefully I can sign some of these DBs to man the back-end. I'd like to be able to play more man coverage so we can do more blitzing. We are fairly limited at corner, which really shrinks down the playbook and limits our blitz volume.

Thanks man...I am in 2nd place on both players I believe. Caleb Jones looks like an absolute stud. I am a little concerned about Pierre Smith's man coverage skills, but I really love his speed and with a name like Pierre, he just seems destined to play in New Orleans. I just had to have him; hopefully the visit/game goes well.

Welcome back man. Hope you enjoyed Disney...

I am not yet anywhere close to ready to proclaim us a one-national championship team, much less a multi-championship team. We have had several seasons during this Part II venture where we thought we were legit, and all it took was one off-game to throw us off. I am really focusing on just one game at a time, because with the way our schedule lays out, we can find our fortunes turned very quickly if we aren't careful. It is also worth noting that we will lose a lot of talent after this season, so this is probably our best shot for the next couple of years.

You're right about Callahan being a little light, though I did do some research and it isn't all that uncommon for college 3-4 lineman to be a bit undersized compared to their NFL counterparts. It is especially hard to find DEs with size on this game, so I am just going to pretend that Karl Dunbar is creating some sort of innovative 3-4 defense that relies more on finesse up-front rather than powerful space-eaters.

Game 3, Year 15 Preview (2024 season): #12 Notre Dame at #10 Tulane

              GAME 3 PREVIEW

              Courtesy

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

              ....................4 1/2....................

2023: LEFT: RB Eric Banks' 8-yard touchdown run last season gave Notre Dame a 30-25 lead with just 4:11 to go in the fourth quarter. | RIGHT: Fighting Irish CB Josh Reid stepped in front of former Green Wave WR Rashaad Hicks-Walker to knock away a pass at the goal line on the game's final play for the win.

Last Meeting: Last season, in a torrential downpour at South Pend, then-#17 Notre Dame got a goal line stop on the final play of regulation to come away with a 30-25 victory over then-#12 Tulane. The loss for the Green Wave gave them an 0-2 record for the first time since the 2010 season, head coach D. Geezy's first year in New Orleans. Despite trailing the majority the game, the Green Wave was able to rally to take a 25-24 lead with 4:11 to go, but an 8-yard touchdown run by then-freshman RB Eric Banks gave the Irish the lead for good. Despite the loss, the Wave got a big help from RB Tony Tompkins, who finished the game with a career-high 182 rushing yards along with 2 touchdowns in what many call the then-sophomore's "coming out party."

2019: Tulane junior TE Roger Battle beats overwhelmed Irish freshman FS Greg Johnson to the seam, catching a wide open pass and racing 77 yards for an early third quarter touchdown that helped extend the Wave's lead to 23-14. Johnson was a frequent target of head coach D. Geezy's offensive play-calling all game long.

Last Meeting at Venue: Former Tulane QB Preston Fields, a redshirt senior at the time playing in place of injured starting QB Jimmy Williams, went 21 of 40 for for 347 yards and 4 touchdown passes along with no interceptions, as the Green Wave rolled to a 40-21 victory over Notre Dame in 2019 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Fields' favorite target of the day was former Green Wave TE Roger Battle, who hauled in 8 receptions for 164 yards and 4 touchdowns, all career-highs. Former Wave superstar WR Ryan Jean also had a fine performance, hauling in 6 receptions for 110 yards as then-#1 ranked Tulane improved to 5-0 on the season.

Notre Dame is not going to be an easy game and I see Lee/Kirk were quick to jump ship on this one. The Irish as we talked about last year probably had one of the best (if not the best) recruiting classes I have ever seen and you can see that talent just continuing to flourish in their sophomore class.

Keeping Banks and Robertson and front of you on plays will be the big challenge. Their line, while solid, doesn't look overly dominant so I am hopeful Dunbar can get some pressure on Hardin. They are just a very very good team all the way around and talent wise may be the best you see all season, outside of 'Bama of course.

                Good luck my friend!

I was shocked to see both Lee and Kirk pick Notre Dame in this one - have they not seen our record at home over the past decade-plus?! (62-2 since 2013)

Once again, amazing recall by you in remembering that insane recruiting class Notre Dame pulled in a year ago. Those kids are going to give the nation fits these next 2-3 seasons, and my Green Wave has one more trip to South Bend next season.

I 100% agree with your assesment of Banks and Robertson as both players gave us problems last season. Robertson in particular burned us with 10 receptions last year as a true freshman. We absolutely cannot afford to let him get loose again like he did last year or else it could be a long day for Coach Dunbar and company.

Really their entire fleet of receivers brings speed to the table and could pose some matchup problems, especially with the spread-no huddle nature of their offense. I want to get after their QB, but with that much speed out there, we can get burned badly if we get caught guessing wrong. Ball control when we have possession will also be key. We need to really run the ball well and eat up clock to keep that impressive offense off of the field.

I am really excited about this matchup, not to mention the debut of my new stadium entertainment! haha

Thanks as always brother....time to kick this one off!

Oh I remember that recruiting class Notre Dame pulled last year. That was easily the best class I've ever seen the CPU sign in my long history playing these games. Going to be tough going into South Bend for you next year but that's not the concern. This year you need to defend the Dome!

Couldn't agree more, that was an impressive haul and they are going to be incredible on paper within the next season or two. Tremendous potential with that bunch.

Too bad they can't hang with the Green Wave and are now 1-2.

Game 3, Year 15 (2024 season): #12 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at #10 Tulane Green Wave

                        #12 34 -- 1-2
                        #10 59 -- 3-0

Tulane junior RB Tony Tompkins had the game of his life, scoring on touchdown runs of 80, 85, and 77 yards on the way to a career-high 337 rushing yards on only 18 carries.

RB Tompkins ignites Tulane's offense with incredible 337 rushing yard performance in 59-34 shootout win over #12 Notre Dame | Geezy era record 659 total offensive yards, 28-point third quarter help Green Wave pull away and avenge last year's defeat to the Fighting Irish | Defensive back Smith continues his incredible start to the season, snags two more interceptions and a sack | Wave set to begin SEC play with bus trip down I-10 West to face top rival LSU next week

New Orleans, LA -- It's not often that a team gives up 34 points, two interception return touchdowns, and allows an opposing running back to rush for 132 yards and still comes out with a comfortable, 25-point win. However when it comes to Tulane at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, anything is possible, as the Green Wave did all of that and still walked away with a 59-34 victory over #12 Notre Dame in what was their 2024 home opener. To overcome all of those issues, a special performance is necessary, and that's just what the Wave got from junior RB Tony Tompkins, who carried the ball 18 times for a career-high 337 yards and 3 touchdowns, averaging a godly 18.7 yards per carry while helping his team avenge last year's 30-25 defeat to the Irish at South Bend.

RB Tony Tompkins' 337 rushing yards were the most ever by a running back under 15th year head coach D. Geezy and he fell just 5 yards shy of Matt Forte's school record of 342, set in 2007.

Behind two touchdown passes from QB Jimmy McBride, one to senior WR Brandon McIntyre and another to freshman RB Michael Brown Jr., Tulane was able to amass a 17-0 second quarter lead, and appeared to be set to cruise to their 63rd victory at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last 65 contests. However, with his team threatening to put up more points, McBride's interception thrown to Irish SS Dallas Latimer resulted in a 85-yard return for a touchdown that cut the Wave's lead to 17-7 still early in the third.

On the Green Wave's very next offensive play from scrimmage following the ensuing kickoff, TE/FB Carl Booker was drilled by Irish LB Ben Jacobs following a 12-yard pass completion, and the big hit resulted in Booker coughing up the football and CB Josh Reid recovered, setting Notre Dame deep in Tulane territory. The turnover would eventually lead to a field goal by PK Avery Gary, which made the score 17-10.

"This game of football can be a roller-coaster ride sometimes," said Tulane head coach D. Geezy.

"One moment, you're sky-high, thinking you're about to go on to blow a team away, and all of a sudden, it only takes one or two plays to completely turn the tide. That said, with the amount of talent they have, we knew this opponent would not go away that easily."

After McBride's 1-yard touchdown run on an option keeper made the score 24-10 just before halftime, Geezy and the Tulane faithful appeared to be able to rest easy again, or so they thought.

Though he threw a pair of interceptions that were returned for touchdowns, redshirt freshman QB Jimmy McBride is clearly starting to take command of Tulane offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd's offense, as the North Carolina native finished with 245 passing yards and 4 total touchdowns on the day.
After the ensuing kickoff following McBride's third score of the game, Notre Dame RB Eric Banks quickly put a halt to any momentum the Green Wave thought they managed to finagle. After taking a handoff and breaking a tackle attempt by LB Chuckie Coley at the line of scrimmage, Banks put his 4.3 speed on full display, racing past the rest of the Green Wave defense for a back-breaking 80-yard touchdown on what was the final play from scrimmage of the first half. The big play cut his team's deficit to 24-17.

"That was just a flat out despicable, inexcusable play," said Green Wave first year defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar.

"Our safeties both crashed there but in that situation, they need to stay back as the last line of defense, as there was no incentive for a stop for a short gain there. We'll have to do a better job in those situations of coaching our guys up. That one is on me."

Fortunately for Dunbar and the Wave, Banks' big play would be one of the final big plays for Notre Dame.

After what several Tulane players called a "spirited halftime discussion," the Green Wave came out on fire in the third quarter.

McBride's recognition of a busted coverage in the Notre Dame secondary by Latimer led to 95-yard touchdown strike to TE Ronnie Parsons on just the third play of the third quarter. The long distance score was career-high for both players and it increased their team's lead to 31-17. Tulane wasn't quite done with long touchdowns just yet.

Tompkins would go on to score touchdown runs of 80, 85, and 77 yards, all in the third quarter, as the Wave finally pulled away from the golden-domers, amassing a 52-31 third quarter lead.

Green Wave defensive back Jonathan Smith has an eye-popping 34 tackles, 3 sacks, 4 interceptions, and 2 touchdowns only three games into the 2024 season.

"We studied a lot of last year's film against them and we knew coming in that they still had not corrected their run-gap fit issues that led to Tony's big game against them last year," said Wave offensive coordinator Curtis Byrd, referring to Tompkins' then-career-high 182 rushing yard performance versus the Irish.

The Wave defense took over the rest of the way, as the only points the Irish would muster the rest of the way was a 39-yard field goal by Gary. Dunbar's unit harassed Irish QB George Hardin all game long and finished the afternoon with 6 sacks. The unit also came away with 5 turnovers, including 2 interceptions by ascending defensive back Jonathan Smith.

"There won't be many times where we give up 34 points and allow a running back to average over 10 yards per carry and we come away saying it was a great game for the defense," said Geezy.

"Sure some mistakes were made, really on both sides of the ball, but we really controlled this game and came away with what we feel was an impressive win versus a strong opponent."

Tulane (3-0) will travel next week to face in-state rival LSU (2-0) at Tiger Stadium. The Green Wave blew away the Tigers 28-3 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and they have not lost to the Bayou Bengals since falling 31-27 at Death Valley all the way back in 2016, the year the Wave won their first ever BCS National Championship.

With Tulane fans chanting his name, RB Tony Tompkins came out for one final curtain call before going into the locker room following his big day.

QB Jimmy McBride's natural leadership ability continued to manifest itself as he led his troops out of the tunnel before the game.

True freshman OLB Sean Williamson, the nation's top defensive high school prospect this past recruiting season, tallied his first career sack early in the first quarter.

After being knocked down to the turf, McBride quickly gets back up in jubilation following his 20-yard touchdown pass completion to freshman RB Michael Brown Jr. that increased the Wave's lead to 17-0 in the second quarter.

The nation's top high school recruit in 2023, Notre Dame sophomore DE Zach Caldwell terrorized the Tulane offensive line, tallying 2 sacks on the afternoon.

On what Wave defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar called "a despicable, inexcusable play," Notre Dame RB Eric Banks got behind the Tulane defense for this 80-yard touchdown on the final play from scrimmage in the first half, making the score 24-17 going into the break.

TE Ronnie Parsons took advantage of a busted coverage, catching a wide open pass and taking it the distance for a 95 yard touchdown to start the third quarter scoring frenzy.

Tulane CB D.J. Keyes was impressive versus Notre Dame WR Anthony Robertson, holding him to only 3 catches for 25 yards while also coming up with this third quarter interception.

Caldwell's assault on the stat sheet was not only relegated to sack production, as the second year defender also returned this interception 77 yards to cut the Irish deficit to 45-31 late in the third quarter.

Green Wave defender-extraordinaire Jonathan Smith capped off another incredible afternoon with this interception on a deep pass attempt to Robertson versus bracket-coverage in the fourth quarter.

Excellent win to get through the early season gauntlet 3-0 sir, what a spectacular showing from Tompkins. Those Tulane jerseys are so sweet, they look beautiful in those game pics.

                                Tony! Tony! Tony!

Now that is how you get revenge! Tompkins was playing just absolutely out of his mind football and seems to be finally living up to the hype that he garnered when he was originally recruited. Playing like this, he will have the fans saying "Deuce, who?" It has been so much fun to watch this team truly become his.

If McBride can clean up those turnovers, this offense is only going to get even more scary good.

Looking forward to seeing what LSU has on paper for this next matchup. You have been putting the foot down on former big brother though for quite some time.

Love that shot of Tony in the tunnel! Beautiful work as always my friend!
