UConn Flashback:

UConn has a storied history with the Cougars. They are the only team that UConn has played in each year of this dynasty. In total, UConn is 7-0 against Houston, spanning all the way back to the AAC days and now into the Big 12. Relive each thrilling game of the series' history by clicking on the year down below!

2014: UConn kept their fading bowl hopes alive by turning in an excellent defensive performance in the nickel package en route to defeating the bowl-bound Cougars.


2015: On Halloween afternoon, Maxy DeLorenzo ran for 100 yards, Thomas Lucas added 100 more through the air, and UConn proved their win over the AAC West-leading Cougs was no fluke. UConn would go 4-1 in the last two months of the season.


2016: Jamar Summers, the former best corner in school history, tallied a school-record quartet of INT's at the expense of 1st round draft pick John O'Korn. Ron Johnson ran for 130 yards in place of starter Josh Marriner, who went down hurt early in the game.


2016 AAC Title Game: With a New Year's Six spot on the line, UConn brought the show back to Rentschler Field and proceeded to destroy Houston for a second time on the season to send UConn to its first ever Rose Bowl. Jhavon Williams and Jordan Floyd picked off O'Korn twice apiece, while Bryant Shirreffs threw 3 TD's and Josh Marriner ran for 2 more in the 52-31 victory.


2017: UConn kept their perfect season and CFP hopes alive with a nerve-racking 20-13 victory. UConn's D held Houston to no points in the second half despite backup QB Tre Pollock completing 22 of his 25 passes. Return man extraordinaire Arkeel Newsome brought back a kickoff for a score while the legendary 300 pound linebacker Quintin Harrell led the defense with 8 tackles, a sack and an INT.


2018: Despite a late-season collapse to dash hopes of a repeat national title bid in the Big 12, UConn took care of business on Senior Day to top Houston with little difficulty, a 45-20 win. Freshman revelation Tanner Dean-Lowry threw for 4 TD's while Arkeel Newsome added 166 yards on the ground. Derek Robinson brought back an INT of Bear Fenimore to the house while the defense combined for six sacks in a dominating effort.


2019: In part of the unposted section of the 2019 season shortly after the revival of the thread, UConn won in Houston with little difficulty, a 31-7 decision. Isaac Jackson threw for almost 250 yards and a pair of TDs, while senior nose tackle T.J. Newell tallied a career-high four sacks on Jarrett Kiniry.

Solid win against a banged up Texas squad. Shav Wade is a monster dude.

On another note, IM GOING BOWLING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THIS DYNASTY

Wade has been incredible.. four picks in the last two games. I thought Jake Crowder's struggles and eventual departure could've spelled doom for us.. especially because I have no faith in Kyler Parks' coverage abilities. But Shav has put all of that to rest single handedly.

Shav already has 14 career INT's in 25 games. The school record is 21. He's only a true sophomore. The career record is well within reach, and if for some reason he stays past his junior year, Shav could demolish the career INTs record.

For the longest time I thought it would be hard for anyone to top what Jamar Summers accomplished in the early years of this dynasty.. he had the famous 4 INT game against Houston in his junior year and picked off a couple passes in the CFP as a senior. Summers broke the career INT record in the Natty against Florida with a pair of picks. He was the best corner in school history. Shav blew past him with excitement, buzz and a pick a week.

I'm going to rework the dynasty hall of fame at some point to make it more exclusive. As of right now, Josh Marriner is the only guy through seven seasons who deserves an HOF slot. If Shav keeps going at the rate he's at, he'll join Marriner right on Page 1 when his time is up.


As for Coach Crenshaw... my Coach Shea made the CFP in his first year in the CAC pool, and he's won a national title. I was more excited to see Central's victory flash across the in-game ticker than I ever was about Coach Shea's accomplishments. I told you 2020 would be your year.. I never fail to disappoint!......... sometimes, that is. Congrats bud :thumbup:

It's certainly nice to clinch but I'm certainly worried about thinking ahead to the Conference Title Game and possibly the CFP.. we'll see what happens. Houston always plays us tough, and I'd hate to get tripped up on senior day.

Coach Nama got totally shafted with a 6-6 record and no bowl last year. I'm pleased to see Cincy take that to heart and storm back. There's a veteran team at your disposal with a good QB in Will Curry, a fantastic tailback in RB Chris Madison, and some wideout depth too. You guys are in the catbird seat to win the AAC East so I'm pulling for you guys to get there.

The 2015 game at the Rent remains the single best sporting event I have attended. Houston was unbeaten, ranked, and bound for the New Year's Six. They got there anyway, but we beat 'em, and stormed the field. I was the only one I know that thought we had a chance. I kept saying it all week. Nobody believed me, but then, getting to storm the field on that cold November evening felt so good.

I also have an image burned into my head of Diaco chest bumping someone on the sideline after the game went final hahah...

But anyways, I remember that 2015 UConn team. I started this thread in December '14 .. the dynasty and players inspired me to watch as many games as I could that year despite being in the middle of a house move that fall. I remember the defensive slugfest in the Missouri game and one other from early in the year, and then of course the Houston game and the bowl game against Marshall (part of which I watched standing outside a pub in Boston lol). I remember the two of us had a lot of great discussion about that team in this thread too.. good times for sure.

Now, though, I find it amazing that this was a couple of years ago and the young guys who shaped my dynasty are now growing up or graduated. I read an article last week about your new starting QB by the name of David Pindell, someone I'm not familiar with. The young kids when I started like Arkeel and Jamar and Ron Johnson and Junior Joseph are seniors now. It's crazy, my man.

Every long-term dynasty has a guy who you think about first when you think about the dynasty. Transcendental to the storyline or the history of the school.. the face of the program. Reggie Moore for Deegeezy.. Robert Thomas for Cheese... Cameron Lilly for LopaKa, Keith Jackson for Mudcat when he rolled with UTSA, etc.

I like to consider Josh Marriner as that transcendental player in this dynasty now that we're almost through seven seasons. He ran for 2000 yards as a senior, led us to the Natty, nearly won the Heisman. Long-time followers like RT and whughes would probably agree. However, the way Wade has exploded onto the scene this year.. when we look back years from now, Wade might be the new guy we most associate with this dynasty.

Wasn't our greatest win, but I'll gladly take it over a top 10 team and now we stand two wins away from the playoff. Can't lose focus yet! Thanks for the comment Young!

Yeah, it makes me sad. I feel old. It's funny, because I don't know anything about Pindell either. But, 11 days until that changes against Holy Cross, me screaming my brains out in the student section. I can't even believe how far we've both come, the fact that we're now the same ages as a couple of these kids, and that we've now reached the point where all of the players initially in NCAA 14 are just about gone.

He’s The Man

I-Jax throws for 480 yards as UConn wins eighth straight game vs. Cougars, head to Dallas one win away from College Football Playoff



Isaac Jackson had a career day against Houston in the home finale.

What a year it’s been for Isaac Jackson.

The redshirt junior was on top of the world in late 2019, running UConn to a 5-1 record in the second half of the season before passing the starting job back to a healthy Tanner Dean-Lowry for UConn’s win in the Cactus Bowl.

He lost the starting job in August 2020, got himself in and out of Bob Diaco’s doghouse, and nearly led another mind-numbing comeback against Oklahoma to win the starting job for good. Eleven months later, I-Jax has asserted himself as the man in East Hartford.

And he’s taking us farther than the Cactus Bowl.

Jackson passed all over the Houston secondary for a career high 481 yards and three touchdowns as UConn raced out to a 35-0 lead in the first half and never looked back en route to a 45-13 demolishing on Senior Night.

Jackson hit seniors Rashad Harris for seven grabs, 136 yards and a score, while Jeff McNeal added seven grabs for 146 yards with Duke grad transfer Derrick Ferwerda chipping in five catches and 65 yards.

Luke Williamson kept his Heisman hopes alive with another fine performance on the ground, running 32 times for 126 yards and four touchdowns while adding 90 yards and a score through the air.

Luke Williamson and Jeff McNeal both made big plays for UConn on the evening.

The receiving touchdown for Williamson helped set the tone early - it came for UConn’s first score of the game on a 75 yard wheel route to the right side. Williamson was left all alone, juked out a defender and sprinted the rest of the way for the six.

From there, the rout was on. Jackson hit Harris on the next drive for a TD, and Williamson scored the next three touchdowns to cap off long, passing oriented drives.

UConn’s defense continued their hot streak, only holding the Cougars to just 13 points and a high powered run game, led by star sophomore Bryley Hope, to just 33 yards rushing. Fourth year junior Jarrett Kiniry had a decent day passing on the UConn secondary with 267 yards, but threw no touchdowns and one INT -- the first of the career for junior Kyler Parks.

This lack of scoring success would doom the Cougars all game long, scoring only six points off of two field goals from Michael Estapante before the subs entered in the fourth quarter.

Among the few bright spots for the Cougs, Houston did receive a couple of nice defensive performances from Michael Anderson (10 tackles, INT, fumble recovery touchdown), Fendall Patterson (13 tackles, 2 for loss), and Brandon Woodard (11 tackles and a sack).

Despite getting blown out, Houston had some highlights on offense. (LEFT) Jesse Battle hurdles #98 Brett Lowery. (CENTER) Kendavian Soderbury sidesteps Sam Barnett on one of his two catches. (RIGHT) Travis Wilson makes an acrobatic catch, but it only resulted in a field goal.

Coach Diaco was pleased with his team’s showing and feels that he has a lot of momentum headed into the Big 12 Title Game in two weeks against Oklahoma State.

Yeah, I like where we’re at. That was a nice statement from Isaac and the passing game.. Show that we’re more than just a one-trick pony on offense. It’s always nice to get a bunch of new guys into the game, especially on senior day where we have guys who are backups but deserve the PT. We got a whole quarter for them today and I’m happy about that. We’re on to Oklahoma State.

In Diaco’s seven seasons with UConn, his Huskies still have never lost to Houston - seven wins in the regular season plus the 2016 AAC Title Game for an 8-0 record in all.

UConn moves to 11-1 on the year and will likely retain their #1 ranking in the Playoff Committee Rankings this week. Houston drops to 6-6 and will finish fourth in the Big 12 East. The Cougars will await their bowl destination in a few weeks.

The Huskies get a much deserved bye before travelling to Dallas to try and exact revenge on the reigning Big 12 Champs, Oklahoma State, in two weeks. The Cowboys narrowly defeated UConn in last year’s Big 12 Title Game.

Hahha no doubt.. I've been following college ball for about 10 years now and I remember when these guys seemed like giants hahaha.. now I see that these guys are my own age and it's a scary thought for sure!

I also remember getting the game in the mail in July 2013.. you're right again, it is scary that almost all of the real players from the default/2013 rosters are wrapping up their careers. Just amazing how the time has gone by.

I'm hoping I can get my own transcendent guy soon in my dynasty.

If you keep at it for long enough, every dynasty gets a guy who will change the fate of your program, be it posted here or not. He will come along!

Champ Week Preview

#20 Florida State (8-4) vs. Duke (9-3)

This game sees a rematch of 2013’s ACC Title Game -- won by Florida State on their way to a National Title.

Once again, the ACC is in serious jeopardy of not fielding a playoff team - their best team, Georgia Tech won’t be playing after they tied in the Coastal Division and lost the tiebreaker with their loss to Duke earlier in the year. Florida State has a star in tailback Sentavian DeBronson but the ‘Noles have underachieved all year; they will look to salvage their four losses with a trip to a New Year’s Bowl game. Meanwhile, after decades of bad football and more recent mediocrity, Duke is finally back on the national landscape and will surprise the college football world with a win today. They have a good team of wideouts and a solid pocket passing QB in Robbie Borris, but will their defense stop DeBronson?

Temple (7-5) vs. Navy (8-4)

Navy returns to the AAC Title Game a year after losing to Army West Point in a fantastic showdown. This year, the Middies draw a surprising Temple team, who have bounced back beautifully from a 2-10 debacle in 2019. Navy has a two headed-monster in tailbacks Kasey Jones and Jake Schroeder with QB Jabari Woods as one of the better QB’s in the conference. The Owls don’t have a ton of offensive weapons, but have a good defensive front led by NFL prospect C.J. Muse. This should be a good battle.

Oklahoma State (8-4) vs. #1 UConn (11-1)
Playoff Watch

A rematch of last year’s Big 12 Title Game, the stakes are much higher this time. UConn is into the playoff perhaps no matter what happens, but a win puts them in strong consideration to go in with the top seed. Oklahoma State doesn’t go down easy, however. Kenny Greenwood has played well replacing one of the school’s best QB’s in Omar Myrick, while Lonnie Wright is on the career record chase. Wideout Parke Lanoer has been fantastic all year, but he has to walk on Shavlion Wade’s island - the sophomore stud leads a red-hot defense. Isaac Jackson is coming off a career performance…. and the elephant in the room? Can Oklahoma State stop Luke Williamson?

#9 Michigan (8-4) vs. #2 Nebraska (11-1) Playoff Watch

The most playoff implications will lie in Lucas Oil Stadium as Michigan takes on Nebraska. The ‘Huskers have looked like one of the two best teams all year and sport the likely Heisman trophy winner Andy Merriman in the backfield. Backup QB Austin Douglas is still the starter with Isaac Zazzarion out, but he’s been playing well. Michigan, however, sports one of the most purely talented rosters in the nation and are red-hot after a miserable start to the year.. They’re 8-1 in their last nine games.

Texas State (8-4) vs. Old Dominion (10-2)

Conference USA hosts perhaps the most exciting game of the evening. Texas State has a high powered offense led by QB Will Mock, freshman sensation Will Dotson in the backfield and stud wideout Romeo Julian. On the other end, Old Dominion has gotten All-American type play out of former disgraced UConn transfer David Hamilton at QB, having passed for over 3000 yards this season whilst seeing his draft stock soar.

We’ve seen some fantastic offensive shootouts in years past with the C-USA title game.. Don’t expect anything different this year.

Toledo (7-5) vs. #17 Miami-OH (11-1)

Toledo upset 11-1 Bowling Green a year ago in this game … the situation is very similar for the Rockets as they look to spoil the dark horse New Year’s dreams of the RedHawks. Miami has a Heisman finalist in tailback Jesse Scales and boast an equally talented backup in Drew Britt. However, the Rockets show up in the big games. Aaron Yates is a good QB, while Chris Glover and Chad Collier form a nice RB duo of their own. But does Toledo possess enough front seven depth to stop the absurd rushing stats from going to Miami?

New Mexico (9-3) vs. #12 Fresno State (11-1)

New Mexico won the conference a year ago with a 6-7 record, but this year they’ll look to do so with a 9-3 record. Tailback Michael Gaines and fullback Varne Reid are both very underrated backs, and spear a nice option attack. Fresno State has had a nice resurgent year, and they’ll look to make up for 2018 -- in the playoff before losing the MWC Title to Wyoming in the last minute. They have one of the better QB-RB-WR tandems in the nation with Michael Patterson, Jacob Thibodeaux and C.J. Warren. The game may come down to who scores last.

#16 Colorado (8-4) vs. #3 Oregon (11-1) Playoff Watch

The mission for Oregon is simple: Win and in. Oregon, along with Nebraska and UConn, have played like the best teams all year and are deserving of a playoff spot. However, Colorado looks to spoil the party and snatch a New Year’s Bowl slot led by their emotional and statistical leader in tailback Mark Mitchell. The Buffs do have a good defense but we’ll see if it’s enough to stop Se’Nelquez DeWeaver and Casey Swanson.

#14 Arkansas (7-5) vs. Vanderbilt (7-5)

Another weak SEC provides us with an odd SEC Title machup with Florida faltering. Arkansas was a favorite to get here early in the year, but certainly not with a 7-5 record. The Hogs have been streaky all year but do have one of the nation’s best offensive playmakers in Tannis Sierra and a very good secondary led by Neville Nixon. That may play to their advantage, as Vandy has relied on the arm of Mid Tennessee grad transfer Lance Rutledge all year.

Playoff Picture

As of Championship Saturday, there are six teams with legitimate cases to make the playoffs. The top three need to merely win their conference title games to gain entry into the College Football Playoff. Should any of them lose, there are two teams (plus Michigan if they win), that are idle this weekend and will need to make their cases.

Great win against Houston, it's always great to get the backups some playing time especially on Senior Day. I'm so happy that things have finally clicked in Mount Pleasant and my Chips will get to go bowling this year, it'll be interesting to see if Coach Crenshaw is still wearing maroon and gold next season. As far the playoff, I think as long as the top 3 and Georgia Tech all win they should be in. If one of the top 3 falls maybe we'll see Arkansas State sneak in at #4. I just have a hard time putting them in when the only real competition they faced all year (I believe you said it was a ranked Auburn squad?) they lost to.

Rift between Diaco and Valentine growing

Reports with inside sources to the UConn football program give us some frustrating news. The relationship between UConn football coach Bob Diaco and Athletic Director Bobby Valentine has been souring in recent weeks, according to these sources, and are likely simply due to a clash in personalities and goals for the program.

This is not the first issue that the two have had just this year. That issue related to Bobby V wanting out of the Big 12 and in to the ACC, where reportedly more money and better geographic matchups are available, whereas Diaco wanted to carry out the work done by himself and former A.D. Warde Manuel to get to the Big 12. There have not been any updates related to that piece of news just yet.

In recent weeks, Valentine has been concerned with the discipline issues regarding former defensive back Jake Crowder and defensive end Sam Rourke, who left the program in late October. Bobby V noted the poor track record with team discipline in Diaco's tenure at UConn. This includes Diaco's suspension for the opening two games of 2019 and the entire Sam Rourke pay for play saga, David Hamilton's DUI arrests and the barfight incident involving former defensive backs Geoff Lewis and Brent Singleton before the 2018 season.

The sources seem to think that the high-octane, full-control approaches of the two men have not exactly meshed. Manuel's more low-key, comprising approach allowed him and the high-octane Diaco to get along well. Diaco likely believes that because he has built the program into a winner, he deserves a say in the decision making surrounding the team and the athletic program.

It is unknown exactly how the two men feel about their differences, but should we be worried?

Maybe so. If Bobby V wants full control and doesn't like the head coach, I doubt he'd be afraid to let Diaco walk or fire him outright, no matter how much success Diaco has had or how much the fanbase likes him. Diaco does have the interest of the NFL once again, and wouldn't rule out coaching for other schools in the midwest, where he has ties.

Miami is far from a shoe-in.. they have two GO5 teams in Arky State and Fresno ahead of them and the Redhawks need to win to even have a prayer. Toledo knocked off your 11-1 BG team in last season's MACCG too... hmmm...

I'm really curious as to how things will play out for you at CMU.. though it is really hard to jump to a head coaching job, as I've seen in this dynasty time and again.

For you, even if it's just a jump to a smaller Power 5 school like HARLEE did from UTSA to Maryland.. a step like that could do wonders for your career moving forward because I think you've hit your ceiling at Central. The school probably won't do much more than 7-5, 8-4 year in and year out. It's obvious you guys have done a lot of good things offensively all year.. seven wins while dealing with a hurt top QB, with a split backfield and no-name receivers.. I hope some other schools pick up on that but I understand if CMU wants to keep you for the stability and as the guy of the future. We'll see, I'm very curious to see how the Coaching Carousel plays out this year.

The thing with the playoff.. we have such a weak bubble this year. The top 3 are probably in even if they lose. Georgia Tech is idle this week. They lost to Duke, hence they lost the tiebreaker and the Coastal Division.. and that sucks. If the Jackets played this week, they'd likely be in no matter what and we wouldn't be having this discussion. Arkansas State did lose to Auburn at home (led at halftime)... but that's the only good team they played all year. They beat a couple of mediocre, group of 5 teams out of conference and the Sun Belt is the worst conference in football.

The argument really comes down to do we pick a Power 5 team that didn't play in a title game in a weak conference but played better teams.. or a Group of 5 team that played nobody but won their conference? It's a tough pick.
