    WE’RE MOVING OUT!

Bobby V bolts for beaucoups de bucks, TV treasure -- UConn, Notre Dame football on the move to create ACC “Superconference”, “free-for-all” championship game structure

Oh my. Bobby V has killed us. Maybe.

Bobby Valentine, the now third-year athletic director at UConn, helped to single handedly shift the balance of power in college athletics today. UConn has officially bought out of the Big 12 and announced that he has struck a deal with commissioner John Swofford and the ACC to gain immediate membership for the 2021-22 academic year. The move will bring the ACC to 16 teams and, after years of speculation out of other conferences, create the first ever college football "super conference".

Notre Dame will also bring their NBC TV deal with them, which will create the ACC Network under the Comcast banner. As it stands right now, NBC will likely serve to air Notre Dame games and/or the ACC game of the week depending on scheduling. NBCSN will also pick up some ACC programming while everything else will air on the new ACC Network. By the time conference play begins, the hope is that all games will be aired by one of the television affiliates. As such, it is expected that NBC will air the ACC championship game, but more information about that will be forthcoming.

As for divisional alignments, the new super conference is going with a unique look: No divisions. With the NCAA’s approval, the new ACC will scrap divisions entirely and the two teams with the best conference records will play in the ACC’s title game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC. That could create some hectic scenarios later on, but the move ensures that no team gets to sneak in via a weak division; the two best teams play for the conference championship, and therefore the hope lies that the best team will make the College Football Playoff (ed. note. Georgia Tech made the playoff last year despite not playing in the ACC Title Game).

We’re getting a fantastic TV deal and perennial top 25 team with Notre Dame, and a rising national superstar in UConn to help complete our stronghold on the northeastern market. I am very proud of the progress we’ve made and I’ve never been more excited for football season.

The move was long expected from the ACC. Swofford had been in talks with UConn and Notre Dame all year -- Notre Dame was already a member in all sports except football. The ACC has perhaps been the worst of the power 5 conferences since 2014, having only fielded two playoff teams since the playoff’s inception in 2014 -- Georgia Tech twice, in 2018 and 2020, both semifinal losses. In the seven seasons of the playoff, both the American and Conference USA (one each) have won more playoff games than the ACC has (none).

Arkansas State to Big 12 East

College football’s hottest small school commodity is moving on up.

To replace UConn, the Big 12 and commissioner Bob Bowlsby have unanimously decided upon the Sun Belt’s Arkansas State to move to the Big 12 East division. No other divisional changes will be made inside that conference.

The three time defending Sun Belt football champs announced their decision to change conferences in October. Athletic director Terry Mojahir said at the time that a move up would be in the best interest of the entire university; the expansion of the Big 12’s market into the southeast with a school that has a growing fan base makes legitimate sense.

Led by former TCU offensive coordinator Doug Meacham, the Red Wolves finished 12-1 in 2020, getting passed up for the playoff in the last week because of their weak out of conference schedule. Arkansas State beat Missouri in the Cotton Bowl and finished second in the final AP polls, marking their first win in the “Big Boy Bowls”.

The Sun Belt has tabbed independent UAB to take their place; they will remain at 8 teams.

Peyton Manning... hmm. I don't know what he'd want to do in Connecticut, but I suppose it's possible. Coach Crenshaw won't be a head coach candidate yet (at least at this level), but could definitely move up as an offensive assistant. Especially if Cubit retires suddenly for some reason. That very assistant role helped launch Coach Trebell into head coaching territory, so who knows!

You're right though, Patterson and Odom would be the best, most logical hires. Odom is close to Diaco's age, he's been with the team, understands how things work. No real changes schematically would be needed, no turnover roster-wise.. a seamless transition. It just wouldn't be as fun following the "antics" (or lack thereof) of Coach Barry Odom.. but we shall see.

Mark Richt and Kyle Whittingham I think are also available and would be good under the radar targets, but less likely in my eyes.

Are you using the editor to make it so there's no divisions? It's a good idea, I'm just wondering how!

In his first year as Rebels head coach, things went from good to bad really quickly, and UNLV missed a bowl a year after tallying ten wins. I would not be surprised to see Freday get an interview and be in consideration, and if this were happening two years from now, Freday might be the lead candidate.. Or the only candidate. This year, however.. We’ll have to wait and see. Still, a solid candidate to take seriously in this job search.

My plan was to split the 16 teams into two divisions just to make it work in the game, then use the editor to mix up conference scheduling a bit. From there, I'll use the editor again to change the conference title matchup, just like you would for the playoff.

I'll see if I can actually use the editor to remove divisions completely, but I doubt that's possible without causing a problem in the file.

Wow. Uncertainty in Storrs these days eh? I agree that Barry Odom makes the most since but I have two interesting names for ya. Dwight Freeney and Dan Orlovsky. Both were born and raised in Connecticut. Freeney ended up going to Syracuse but it could be interesting to bring him back to his home state as a coach. Orlovsky was one of UConns best quarterbacks in school history. I am sure they are both not doing much right now in your era.

Interested to see who ends up the head man. Also interested to see how your no-division set-up works. Maybe you could rotate teams between them each year to ensure everyone plays everyone on a rotating basis. Could use this pods idea from SBNation

Note from the Author: I am really hopeful we'll end the suspense of this head coaching search this weekend! I appreciate all of the suggestions and opinions here.. there are certainly many different places we can take this.

Heading home tomorrow for a bit so I'll be able to have access to the game for a while. I still have not made a final decision myself.. but it will basically come down to whether or not I can edit coach skill levels through the editor. We'll see what happens! I'm very antsy to get back to playing and starting season 8 on the field in the new era of UConn football so we'll try to move this along a bit in the coming days.

Yessir! Uncertainty might be generous hahah.. the obvious greed of Bobby V and president Herbst has put us in quite a pickle here. Needless to say, this hire could make or (re)break UConn football. We're seeing a lot of new faces already on the field, so this new guy won't just be walking into a national title contender. I mean, it's highly possible, but I don't seem to think so as we look to 2021.

I ran a couple simulations (one last August, oddly enough, and one a few weeks ago) purely to see what would happen if Diaco left and Odom came up hired each time. I don't know if I'm going to go that route, but yes it does make the most sense. We've put together a decent recruiting class so far and we have a couple prospects we're still targeting heading into signing day that we need to get at all costs. As in, absolutely pivotal to the future of this team prospects. Odom will hold the glue together and ensure we still have a shot at getting them. Of course that's not to say someone else couldn't, but it'd be more likely that Odom would be successful.

I don't really see Freeney but Orlovsky is certainly interesting. When researching Maryland a while back I saw something about how Scott Milanovich was the fan favorite and a finalist before they settled on D.J. Durkin.. Orlovsky certainly wouldn't be too much of a stretch. And of course.. that dozen coaches list was certainly non-binding...

Les Miles is a bit of a longshot because he did retire a few seasons back, but it's certainly not impossible. I too think a CAC would be really fun to bring in.. especially Freday because his alma mater is UConn and of course it's RT's school in real life. Plus, we could poke fun at him even more when UConn loses... that is if he's still alive, as he indicated he may be deceased a few posts back.

                      We shall see!

I read the link this morning, thank you for sharing that! Very interesting piece and I'll definitely look to implement some of the features here, at least the permanent conference opponents.

KSW used a pod style setup with Tulane way back when, and that was very well executed. I didn't want to steal that idea completely and opted for something different. While lacking organization, a free for all allows me to be flexible with the scheduling, increases competition and ensures that the best teams get rewarded with the conference title trip and playoff berth! (That's the hope, anyway).

Thanks to all of you as always!

Favored defensive coordinator Odom backs out of UConn job search, will accept Boise State offer; UConn has four finalists to fill coaching vacancy

Stunning news breaking out of the UConn head coaching job search as defensive coordinator Barry Odom, considered the favorite to fill the role, has backed out of consideration and has accepted the vacant head coaching job at Boise State.

I'm thankful to Coach Diaco, Warde Manuel, Bobby V and President Herbst for their support over the last three years -- I'll forever treasure the opportunity I've had to work in Storrs, Connecticut. Thank you.

Odom declined comment when asked if Bobby Valentine played a role in his decision. Bobby V, of course, pushed Coach Diaco out the door for good.

This will be Odom's first head coaching gig. The Broncos have slid to the bottom of the Mountain West in recent seasons, and fired coach Bryan Harsin in December.

The 44 year-old Oklahoma native came to UConn from Memphis in 2018. He was viewed as the odds-on favorite to succeed Bob Diaco as the head coach, primarily because of his youth and the likelihood to maintain stability in the program moving forward. Instead, with UConn declining to interview offensive coordinator Bill Cubit, UConn will now have to hire out of the box.

                        ------------------------------

Patterson, Orlovsky, McDaniels, Stephen Belichick set for formal interviews with UConn

After a series of informal interviews over the last seven days, UConn has winnowed their list of head coaching candidates down to four.

New England Patriots assistant coaches Josh McDaniels and Stephen Belichick, along with former TCU head coach Gary Patterson and surprise candidate, former UConn quarterback Dan Orlovsky, have emerged as finalists for the vacant head coaching job. All four will interview formally again in the next week before athletic director Bobby Valentine and school president Susan Herbst make a final decision.

Patterson is currently viewed as the most logical choice now that Barry Odom has backed out of the race. The former TCU coach makes the best sense as a hire for UConn right now given his long history in building the TCU program to a national contender and his experience at the college level.

Orlovsky, a record-setting QB at UConn in the early 2000s, was a late entrant into the interviewing process, but Bobby V says the former NFL QB has "potential" as a coach and interviewed well last week.

Valentine also raved about 34-year old Patriots defensive assistant Stephen Belichick, the son of Hall of Fame head coach Bill. Valentine said that "the future is very bright for someone with the extremely rigorous work ethic that he maintains", and that he "relates well to the kids".

McDaniels has never had head coaching experience at the college level. He has shown interest in the job, but the fit is questionable right now. Nevertheless, he is a fantastic offensive mind with ties to the northeast.

CAC alumni Dale Miller, who has decided to accept the head coaching job at Vanderbilt, and Sam Freday, who will remain at UNLV in 2021, both interviewed earlier this week after being considered possible targets early in the search process. Former LSU head coach Les Miles also interviewed, but will elect to remain in retirement.

Bobby V has otherwise kept mum on who exactly he is favoring at the moment, but says that the public will know soon.

                              THE NEXT GENERATION

UConn hires Stephen Belichick as next head coach

In an impromptu press conference called by athletic director Bobby Valentine, UConn announced the hiring of New England Patriots safeties coach and defensive assistant Stephen Belichick as the thirtieth head coach in school history.

The soon to be 34-year old has no head coaching experience, and has never held a job at the college level. However, he has been on the New England staff since 2012. Belichick played only one year of college ball under Greg Schiano at Rutgers, but has been working hard to learn the game and the nuances of coaching from his father and was seen by many insiders as a future star coach in the NFL, should he elect to continue down that route.

Instead, the son of Bill Belichick is taking his talents to Storrs/East Hartford.

I feel like I’m at a place where I know the game well enough to be successful .. and I think working with the kids will be enjoyable because I can still relate to them. I’m thankful that Bill Cubit has agreed to stay for at least one more year to help me out, and our new defensive coordinator will probably do the same. It’s to my understanding that we’ve got a lot of new faces we need to roll out, so we’re going to learn about the team and the trajectory of the program together. I’m really looking forward to getting started, and I owe Bobby and Mrs. Herbst a big thank you for the opportunity."

He’s an incredibly intelligent young man, he interviewed really well and we’re getting along great. We have a great vision for the program, and we’re going to work cooperatively to keep UConn at the forefront of the college football landscape for a long time to come.”

“Gary Patterson interviewed very well and he’s obviously one helluva coach. However, I want to look to the long-term and we had better options to help me fill that need. I don’t know how long we would have him as a member of our program and I don’t want to take any chances with this. Danny [Orlovsky] was not a particularly good fit right now for this job, but we’ll gladly look into adding him as a staffer down the line.”

Belichick replaces Bob Diaco, the most successful football coach in program history. He left in January to accept the head coaching job with the London Black Knights in the NFL. Belichick’s base contract is slated to run for three years and net him $12 million in total. Incentives are part of the deal, but were not disclosed.

A defensive specialist, Belichick acknowledged that he will likely maintain the pro style offense and 3-4 defensive front that former Coach Bob Diaco made famous to Husky fans in the last seven years.

Throughout the press conference, Belichick spoke confidently, inspiring hope that UConn football is still in good hands.

                              Conklin hired as defensive coordinator

Hours after the announcement of Stephen Belichick as head coach, UConn filled their vacancy at defensive coordinator as well. Former Virginia head coach Josh Conklin has been hired to replace Barry Odom. Conklin, who turns 42 in June, was fired from Virginia in December after compiling losing seasons in all four years at the program. Inheriting a ranked team upon his hiring, Conklin went 5-7 in 2017, including a season-opening loss at home to the eventual national champion UConn Huskies. Virginia lost the Sun Bowl in 2018 to finish 6-7, but then slid to 4-8 in 2019 and finally 3-9 in 2020. Before his hire by Virginia, Conklin led FIU to a winning record and bowl game in 2016.

“Josh’s head coaching record doesn’t indicate just how good a coach he is”, Bobby Valentine said.

“I’m excited to get started”, Conklin added with a smile when approached by the Hartford Courant. “UConn has a proud tradition, I’m looking forward to getting familiar with it and leaving my mark here.”

Richt, Mora, Petersen, Patterson fired as several Power 5 schools change head coaches; UConn hires Bill Belichick’s kid to usher in the ACC era

                                ---------------------
A short time ago, UCLA was the new dynasty. After capturing consecutive national titles in 2015 and 2016, UCLA looked like the newest power in the college football world. Unfortunately, the good times would not last much longer, and head coach Jim Mora was fired after UCLA skidded to a 4-8 record in 2020.

Mora’s firing was one of several big-name swaps in this cycle. Georgia parted ways with Mark Richt after nineteen seasons at the helm. Despite landing several top prospects in recent years, the Bulldogs couldn’t quite put it all together and decided to go in a new direction. Georgia made a big splash, hiring former Utah head coach and current Oregon defensive coordinator Kyle Whittingham to try and turn the blue-chips into a giant jackpot.

UConn made a flashy hire of their own, replacing Bob Diaco with Bill Belichick’s son Stephen, formerly the safeties coach of the New England Patriots. This is the 34-year old’s first head coaching job, and will be counted upon to usher UConn into the ACC with the same success that Diaco brought the program.

Elsewhere around the NCAA, TCU fired longtime coach Gary Patterson after consecutive 5-7 seasons and worsening relations with the athletic department. The Horned Frogs will look to keep the tradition of big offense alive with the hire of Oregon OC Andy Ludwig. Washington also fired Chris Petersen and Arizona fired Rich Rodriguez, while Illinois, Iowa State, Virginia and Boise State did the same, looking to right the ship and get their programs back on track. Other big news surrounded David Shaw, who resigned from the SEC Champion Vanderbilt Commodores, citing uncertainty in the A.D.'s office. He will be replaced by Dale Miller of UL Lafayette. Shaw will go to Houston.

Richt lands at UL Lafayette, and Rodriguez will be at Louisana Tech while Patterson will become the new defensive coordinator at Oregon. Indiana dipped into the NFL, luring Greg Schiano back into the college game to be their head coach.

                                In the CAC sphere

Only three of our CAC's changed jobs this year. Most notably, Dale Miller (glunsford) became the third CAC head coach in the Power 5, moving up from head coach of Louisiana to head coach of Vanderbilt, taking over the reigning SEC Champs after David Shaw’s resignation.

Additionally, offensive coordinators Laurence Gilbert (Mike7Vinas) and Brian Grant (LadiesAndEdelman) saw their contracts go unrenewed. Gilbert leaves Syracuse to go to Virginia, and Grant leaves New Mexico State after three seasons to go to Kent State. The two newest CAC fraternity members, Ricky Jacobsen (slicknick3822) and Richard Harrison (itsbigmike), have been hired by Iowa State and Western Michigan, respectively.

A full CAC outlook will come in a later post.
