EA College Football potential going forward

Just watched some Ultimate Team videos of the Longshot Chronicles where you could play as Texas against Oregon.. That got me thinking, if they could have those two teams in Madden without lawsuits or anything, there has to be SOME potential for future NCAA games, right? The way I see it is this:

    Bring back the game with,

    -all teams
-all licenses (NCAA, bowls, conferences, stadiums, etc.
-all coaches (if possible, but not if the costs are too much)
-use the same tech as Madden
-use completely fictional players or include NFL players on their former college teams (Madden UT currently does this with Texas and Oregon, and Teambuilder did this too)

The way im understanding the lawsuit is the only problem was NCAA used the likenesses of current players in rosters.. If they used fictional players where you could randomly generate rosters, wouldnt that fix the issue?

I feel like Madden featuring Texas and Oregon definitely leaves the door open for a return at some point, possibly sooner than we expect... Thoughts?

Unlikely. No major title with generic players is going to fly.

I think the jury is still out on a game with actual generic players. Personally, I think that it would do well provided they had the real schools, NCAA and Bowl Games. A game without the actual schools is what's DOA. College sports is about rivalries and tradition. Let me smash up on Florida in The Swamp. The players names matter some, but not in the grand scheme of things. The players, whatever their names, will be the ones I'm vested in as I go through the years. I still pull NCAA Football out from time to time. All the "real" players are long gone. No matter, I play a game or two and I'm already interested in major players/teams from that season.

I have no reason to be but I am confident that well get another college football or basketball game at some point. Seeing EA and 2K dabbling even a littl let's me know that there's a possibility. I think it's down to how much it'll cost to license all the schools and NCAA and develop the game and what measures they would have to take to ensure that likenesses aren't infringed upon again. Even if you win a case it still costs money to defend yourself. I think once a model comes along that protects all parties (EA, NCAA, conferences, schools, players even...) involved legally we could see something. I'd also expect to see MyCareer mode and some MUT like stuff as it makes money. I'd support them both in the case of college sports as I know that money talks.

I would love to see it but i am not holding my breath. I have no hope that ea would do it as they would see it as competition to madden unless another studio was doing it. I would definately rather it be done by someone else to see how they woud do a football game instead of just slapping the concept on what exists already as madden.

I'm optimistic but very much a realist. If it never happens again I'd understand. It's a complicated issue with the amateurism stuff. The way I see it, another successful title that generates revenue is a win for EA. Especially if they had a release schedule like UFC (every couple years) as it wouldn't have to marry up with the real world because it's not based on real players. On the field I have to give EA credit, Madden is outstanding there. Their representation of football is really good imo. It has some issues for sure but I don't see anyone delivering a better on field experience any time soon.

Frankly, if gameplay was the same as madden it would be an either or purchase for me. Probably would alternate every other year. With the depth of other sport games franchise modes it is hard to stay interested in football long enough to get value out of both before the pull of an actual immersive game pulls me away. In two montbs i will be spending my game time on nba 2k and cod ww2. I doubt ea would make a college game any more immersive to compete with that. Still hope to see one though.

Respectfully disagree. The community can handle the roster part. As long as the teams are licensed (and the conference names plus some bowls) I think it would sell.

Especially if we are given the opportunity to edit and share rosters. We would find a way

I am not a lawyer but i doubt they would open up shared and edited rosters if they were going to make the game. Someone would argue the intent was to allow people to create and share player likeness without compensation. Who would wi. In court eventually i don't know but it would be years of litigation built in

They were allowed to use those teams for Longshot because they had total control over the "player likeness" aspect ensuring there was no possibility of overlap. They actually aren't allowed to use those Jerseys in MUT per their agreement with the schools.

There will not be another NCAA game until the power 5 break away from the NCAA and agree to a form of payment IMO. The headaches "semi licensing" away the likeness of the athletes causes to their model of not paying doesn't balance out the return on the license fee.

Yep, think there was something similar with backbreaker in regards to playing online.
It’s easier to do the right thing, than to explain why you didn’t.

I think that an NCAA game featuring all of the accurate information (schools, bowls, etc), minus real players would do just fine. When you buy a game, most people played dynasty mode, which means that after four to five seasons, you were playing with all fictional players anyways. Bring the game back, don't use any player likeness.

The legal reasons why you don't far out way the reasons why the NCAA would want to.
