    Good Release vs Slightly Early/Late

Usually a lurker and not a poster here, and I saw a bit of this discussion in the thread on shooting percentages on open 3's, but I thought it merited it's own discussion/thread.

I know I'm not the only one who has found that "good" is actually seemingly the worst release you could get. I feel like I have a much better chance of making my jumper with "slightly early" or "slightly late" than good.

In my most recent game, I've just started trying to get slightly early, as that seems like the best (besides excellent, which gives me a high chance of getting "good" and the guaranteed miss).

    What is going on here?

Turn it off. You'll be more happier. I promise you! Stopping worrying about releases.

I've turned off the meter, but you might be right, turning all feedback off might be next.

Re: Good Release vs Slightly Early/Late

"Good" is indeed the worst feedback that you can receive for your shot, but that doesn't mean that you should try to time it early. The issue appears to be related to green releases, when you have a high enough shooting attribute, good release timing becomes essentially green or miss ("good"). Still, your global shooting % should be better than releasing it early or late.

Re: Good Release vs Slightly Early/Late

To me, turning off the feedback is a no go because I still need to know when the shot is actually being released at the right point.

I'll turn the meter off, because I feel the meter really can throw your perception off, but the feedback is the only thing that tells me if my release point is off.

If we are going to play this game where shooters are playing percentages primarily and not their attributes, we need better feedback.

Re: Good Release vs Slightly Early/Late

Most of my slightly late and good releases always go in less than slightly early. I think some of the "Good" releases are actually very slightly late releases. Last year you were more punished more slightly late releases than slightly early (per Dev twitter... I'd have to dig it up on Beluba's twitter)

I turn the meter off, and time it by the shot animation, and feel. I keep feedback on as a reminder of late vs. Early, but I don't look at anything but the shooting motion.

I hit some, miss some. That meter hurts more than helps

                No it's not lol

The rule had been the same for years. But users just can't let go of the shot meter.

Late releases hit the front of the rim.
Early releases hit the back of the rim.

When you see those shots that hit the rim and then bounces around the rim and go in or fall out.

It's been like that for years

That's why it takes me a about 3 shots with a elite player to get his release down. After that I'm good. Role players can be different because you don't shoot with them as often.

I can tell as soon as the player releases the ball whether I'm late or early.

I'm telling you, turning it off will make you feel better. You'll be more locked in the overall game. Like getting offensive rebounds. Just give it a try.

And for free throws just look at the players wrist.

Good releases almost never go in, even during pre game shoot around... with no contest.

Slighty early releases find the bottom of the net more often.

Agreed with what you said above.

I actually enjoy the game more once you remove the shot meter, you're not purposely trying to hit a full meter, IMO it's more enjoyable to watch a player's shot animation and time it perfectly.

Plus, when you have a "Good" shot release and it misses, you just get pissed off lol.

Side note - I have the Pixel XL myself, have you thought about getting the Pixel 2 XL version?

I could've sworn it was the opposite; early hits front rim, late hits back rim? I'll have to pay more attention.

I've always timed my release of the stick/button with the player's release. Except for last year, it's been working.

But yeah, I think I've turned ALL meters, HUDS, etc off since we've had the option. Distracting as hell!

Right? The game becomes even better! I don't know more people don't at least try it out.

I just got my Pixel 3 months ago. And plus I don't like that they took away the headphone jack. I just got new headphones lol.

Na I'm 99% sure it's what I said. Because there's a 1%. I'm going to fire up the PS4 right now and double check.

At the end of the day there are 3 different releases (from a input side). Quick, Normal, Late. That's all users need to practice for.

Free throws are very animation based. All you have to do is watch the players wrist.

Turned the shot meter off and I'm glad I did.

Still keep the feedback on but rarely pay attention to it since I'm focusing on the player's release itself.

I'll remember to pause the game and take time to note (in between the frame skips) whether or not my shot is hitting the front or the back of the rim while I'm in the playground.

Bro you can save all that. I already said I don't even look at the "meter". I just noted they could probably be more clear in their feedback.

                              ---

I get where the simheads are pushing IRL percentages because I've been there with Madden. Just note, not everyone plays this game because they love NBA basketball and desperately want to replicate that.

I play the game to compete with my friends and I play to win. I don't really care what Steph Curry's percentage is. I don't even watch basketball.

In a couple of months people will have this game figured out to the bone, myself included, and I'm sure these perceptions will pass. That's been my experience the last three years anyway.
