Sophomore wideout Jaydon Mickens catching quarterback Keith Price's only touchdown pass of the day

Beavers no match for Huskies, as Washington wins big in Corvallis

CORVALLIS, OR -- Though it started slow, the Huskies exploded for 20 points in the second quarter alone, en route to a 40-10 win over rivals Oregon State in Corvallis. Junior running back Bishop Sankey recorded two scores in the game, but had to leave near the middle of the fourth quarter due to an injury to his left foot. His status will be evaluated once he's back in Seattle.

Quaterback Keith price once again had a good day through the air, going 36-for-49 with 388 yards and a touchdown pass to wideout Jaydon Mickens, and also adding another score on the ground after a long Washington drive in the second quarter. Cornerbacks Gregory Ducre (with an interception) and Marcus Peters (who recovered a fumble) both had great performances on the defensive side of things, as Washington allowed under 300 yards to the Beavers in the rout.

The run defense in particular was stellar, only giving up 37 yards in the entire game. "It was great seeing the guys rebound from the loss at UCLA last time," coach Sarkisian said after the game. "We were a little undisciplined though, perhaps the guys on the offensive line were a little nervous after last game's performance, but they seemed to calm down as the game progressed. It was an important victory this week, and now we've only got one game left to win, and that's Senior Day and the Apple Cup next week. I don't think I can say anything to get the kids more pumped than they are right now."

Washington State will be our guests next week to fight for the Apple Cup, freshly coming off a 13-9 win against Utah. It will also be the last home game for our seniors, but will mean almost nothing for the Pac-12 North standings as Washington will not catch Oregon even if they lose to Oregon State, nor is Oregon State going to climb to second place even with a win.

Huskies bring back the Apple Cup to Seattle with 44-20 win over Cougars

SEATTLE, WA -- From the very first play of the game, the Huskies were out to avenge last season's Apple Cup heartbreak defeat. After taking over the ball on their own 25-yard line from Travis Coons' kickoff touchback, Cougars quarterback Connor Halliday was intercepted on the very first offensive play, leading to a 22-yard interception return touchdown by cornerback Gregory Ducre.

The Huskies didn't look back after that, even if only 5 seconds of the game clock had elapsed.

It was 21-7 after the first quarter, and the second quarter started with a fumble from Halliday, which was recovered by Josh Shirley and returned to the Cougars' 6-yard line, from where running back Dwayne Washington (replacing an injured Bishop Sankey, out for a couple weeks after the victory over the Beavers last time out) made it 28-7 Huskies, with barely more than a quarter played.

"The kids played brilliantly, every last play was well-executed, we put up the pressure on their offense and exploited every little crack we could in their defense," coach Sarkisian commented after the game. "It was one of those games where everything works out the way it's supposed to, and it was a perfect sending off for our seniors here at home this season."

The Huskies will now await the conclusion of the season, as their schedule has now ended, and look toward whoever opponent they'll face in their upcoming bowl matchup.

Fiesta Bowl-bound Huskies will face #5 Kansas State in Phoenix

Bowl season is oficially upon us, and the Huskies have been selected to take part in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix, where they will face the #5 Kansas State Wildcats.

Washington will come into this game riding the wave of two consecutive 40+ points wins against rivals Oregon State and Washington State, and boasting the NCAA's best passing attack and rush defense. They're led by senior quarterback Keith Price, who will play his last game in a Husky uniform. He led the NCAA in completions (370), attempts (543), passing yardage (4006), yards per game (333.8) and completion% (68%), but, interestingly, wasn't considered in the Heisman trophy race. The Huskies defense will be anchored by NCAA sack leader (with 11 sacks on the season), junior defensive end Andrew Hudson and star senior cornerback Gregory Ducre, who led the Pac-12 in interceptions with 8.

They'll be up against a strong Kansas State team, who finished second in the Big 12, a game behind leaders and #2-ranked Texas Longhorns. Players to watch on the Wildcats' roster will be senior running back John Hubert and junior defensive end Devon Nash, who led their team to the 3rd-ranked rushing offense and 5th-ranked overall defense respectively. It should prove to be a tough matchup for the Huskies.

Kickoff is scheduled for 5pm local time on January 1st.

Huskies show that defense can win Bowls too in 30-10 win over Kansas State

GLENDALE, AZ -- The Huskies entered the Fiesta Bowl with their NCAA-leading run defense, against the 3rd-ranked rushing offense in all FBS.

Guess who got the better of the other ?

Washington only allowed a total of 257 yards to the #5 Wildcats, of which a meager 51 yards came on the ground, from an offense that usually puts up an average of 256 in a game. Running back John Hubert was almost nowhere to be found, only gaining a total of 75 all-purpose yards, with the lone Kansas State touchdown coming through the air during the third quarter. Meanwhile, Washington quarterback Keith Price was throwing for another 300+ yards game, his fourth in a row, and running back Bishop Sankey had a 100+ yards game on the ground in his return from an ankle injury suffered against Oregon State late in the regular season.

"We figured this would be a challenge, I mean, Kansas State finished second in their conference, behind the #2 team in the nation, that's no small feat," coach Sarkisian told the reporters after the game. "That said, we played one of our best, if not the best game we played all season. The kids were confident, focused, and executed everything to perfection. I can't ask for a better ending for our seniors, winning a bowl game like that."

Thirteen players are leaving after this game, and nine of them on defense, so the recruiting efforts had to be made primarily on that side of the ball this season. With four seniors named to the NCAA All-American first team (defensive tackle Sione Potoa'e, cornerback Gregory Ducre and safeties Tre Watson and Sean Parker), it's easy to see that next year's defense will look very different than it did this year. "Faces will change, that's for sure, but we had many players that logged in meaningful playing time and that will come back next season, so I'm not too concerned for the defense," defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox mentioned. "We already have some great players committed to our team for next season as well, so our work is going well as far as replacing our seniors goes. Indeed we'll be losing key pieces, but the players who'll take their places are not pushovers either."
