Many changes affecting Huskies, with the focus mainly on defense

The 2014 Huskies will be a much different football team than they were in 2013. The Huskies will be losing 13 seniors this offseason, with two of them, safety Sean Parker and quarterback Keith Price, expecting to be drafted in the NFL. Along with these seniors leaving the team, four juniors have spoken to the coaching staff about their plans to declare for the NFL Draft, tight end Michael Hartvigson, running back Bishop Sankey, offensive tackle Micah Hatchee and defensive tackle Danny Shelton, and freshman offensive tackle Andrew Kirkland has notified the staff that he would request a transfer to San Jose State. Parker and Shelton are members of the star-studded Husky defense which will be losing three other important pieces in safety Tre Watson, cornerback Gregory Ducre and defensive tackle Sione Potoa'e, all due to graduate this next summer. Shelton still had one year of eligibility left, and his departure for the NFL means that both starters at defensive tackle will need to be replaced in the Washington defensive scheme. Kirkland, on the other hand, has not played last season, being backup to starting tackle Micah Hatchee, who played in all Washington snaps last season.

"It was an easy decision for me, forgoing my last year of eligibility for a shot at the NFL. I believe I've given all I can to this team, and I'm not losing on the education side of things because I will be able to come back and finish my degree whenever I decide to," Shelton said. "That said, if I'm ever drafted by Seattle, then I'll be that much closer to the University and will probably finish my classes right away." Shelton's departure for the NFL took the coaching staff a bit by surprise, but they mentioned that last season's backups, as well as new recruits, will be able to fill the void left by both departing tackles. "Of course it'll be hard finding two better guys right away, because both Danny and Sione were class acts, but we do have some kids here that awaited just this chance to show us what they've got," defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox said.

It's pretty much the same story on offense, with starters Sankey, Hatchee and Price being hard players to replace. "I've realized that I have the talent to be up there, in the NFL, with the big guys," Sankey told us, "and for me it looks like it's now or never. I think staying here for another season will not have the same impact on my game as it did this season, so I am thinking of taking my chances in the Draft." Hatchee mentioned that he had good contacts with some of the pro recruiters lately, and that he can probably make an impact right away if he's drafted by a suitable team.

All these departures (and potential ones), while having a big impact on the on-field performance for next season, will also allow for new faces to try and make their way into the starting line-up. "The door is wide open for last season's redshirts like Tommy Jacobs, and LaVon Coleman, as well as Elijah Qualls and Jermaine Kelly on defense, to show us what they've got," coach Steve Sarkisian said. "The ball is in their hands, and if they do well, we might just give them the starting sports they deserve."

Dan Mullen is the new man in charge at Penn State

Penn State has a new face at the top of its coaching staff. They've hired former Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen, while at the same time firing Bill O'Brien after last season's 2-10 campaign. This change highlights the 2014 pre-season's coaching carousel, in which a total of 79 coaching changes have been made.

"Penn State has a mythos around it that you simply can't resist," admitted Mullen, during his appointment press conference. "I've had a great time at Mississippi State, people there have been really good with me, and when I talked to them about the opening here at Penn State, they've been very supportive of my decision. Of course they've asked me to consider what I had accomplished at Mississippi State, and wether I'd stay rather than come here, but once I made my mind up they wished me good luck. It was all good with everyone."

"Of course, when a college like Penn State comes to you with that kind of an offer, you sit down and think about it seriously. It meant leaving one of the best conferences in the NCAA, but also coming to one of the best of them as well. It also was an opportunity to leave my mark on a storied program, and one that I hope I can do much for. We have some things to talk about with the coaching staff, things to implement to prevent a season like last year from happening again, but I'm pretty confident we can do it."

No news has been coming out of Mississippi State as far as replacing Mullen goes, but we can bet they've got a number candidates on their list to look at in the coming days.

St. Louis Rams select Alabama QB McCarron with first overall pick

Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback A.J. McCarron is the NFL's first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. McCarron, who led the Tide to a national championship and a 13-1 record in 2013, will now be a part of the St. Louis Rams after they selected him first overall. He passed for 3,315 yards and 31 touchdowns last season, and was named to the All-American Second Team after his performance in the National Championship game against the Texas Longhorns.

Latest realignments bring Big Ten and ACC to 14 teams each

We see the latest waves in the realignment that was started back at the beginning of the decades, as the 2014 season will see changes to the conferences outlook.

The Big Ten has added two schools in Rutgers and Maryland, and realigned itself into East and West divisions, that will go as follows (with added teams in italics) :

Big Ten East : Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers
Big Ten West : Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue, Wisconsin

Gone are the protected rivalries of the past season, and also gone are the confusing "Legends" and "Leaders" division arrangements.

The ACC has also added Louisville to its conference, partly to make up for the loss of Maryland, and also to complete their plans for a 14-team conference. Again, here's the new lieup, with added team in italics :

ACC Atlantic : Boston College, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest
ACC Coastal : Duke, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Virginia, Virginia Tech

The American Athletic Conference and Conference-USA have taken the major brunt of it though. The American, losing Rutgers and Louisville, has invited East Carolina, Tulane and Tulsa from the Conference-USA to make up for it. The pending addition of Navy in 2015 will mean the American will be able to stage a conference championship game, but it will have to make do without one for the next season. Meanwhile, C-USA officials have stated that both Old Dominion (previously Independent) and Western Kentucky (from the Sun Belt) are to be joining its ranks for the 2014 season.

Finally, Idaho and New Mexico State will join the Sun Belt Conference after spending the last season as Independents, following the demise of the WAC. With the advent of the College Football Playoff for the 2014 season, we are surely in for one of the most memorable seasons in FBS football yet.

Huskies reveal 2014 schedule, travel to Hawai'i to open the season

The Huskies have made their 2014 schedule known, with some "unfamiliar" opponents in their non-conference matchups. They'll start the season with a trip away to Hawai'i to play the Rainbow Warriors, and end up their out-of-conference schedule by playing hosts to the Georgia State Panthers, before taking a break ahead of their conference schedule.

Washington will play five of their conference games on the road, at Arizona, California, Colorado and Oregon State before ending the season at Washington State for the Apple Cup. Arizona State, Stanford, Utah and Oregon will be the conference opponents that will travel to Husky Stadium this fall. The Huskies are ranked #4 in the preseason polls for 2014, so needless to say that they are expected to do well in this first year of the College Football Playoff.

There is still some time now before the start of the season, but we have yet to see the projected Washington depth chart, and the question still remains as to who is going to start at quarterback this season. With the departure of Keith Price, the spot is all open, and it looks like it will be a three-headed battle for the starting job, as redshirt sophomores Cyler Miles and Jeff Lindquist, along with redshirt freshman Tommy Jacobs, are going to go all out to land the coveted role. A more in-depth analysis will be made on each protagonist as training camp gets under way.

Huskies release depth chart, offense mostly intact, defense much changed

It was pretty much expected, but with the departure of many starters on the defensive side of the ball, many new faces will get the nod this upcoming season, including freshmen DT Elijah Qualls and FS Shawn Jones. The front seven remains mostly the same though, as defensive linemen Josh Shirley and Andrew Hudson will be returning for their senior season to anchor the defense, as well as most of the same linebacking corps, including middle linebacker John Timu, sidelined for most of last season with a torn Achilles ligament. He will be expected to lead the defense as he did before falling to injury at midseason.

On offense, there are little changes, as pretty much the only starters not returning from last season are wide receiver Kevin Smith and quarterback Keith Price, who were both selected in the NFL draft (Price in the 2nd round by the Vikings, and Smith in the 5th round by the Bengals). Coach Sarkisian will hand the ball to redshirt freshman Tommy Jacobs for the 2014 season, so he'll have the job of replacing Price at the helm of the Husky offense. He'll be playing behind the same offensive line the protected Price last season, comprised mostly of seniors for 2014, so he should be well defended from the opposing defenses and should have the needed time to find receivers and install the offensive plays.
