On paper this FSU/Huskies games looks about even and should be a good game. Going through the starting lineups of players posted, I can see where this can be a ground and pound game from your side against their d-line. Good luck Guru. Looking forward to the report.

A close game is a fair observation. FSU has some star power on offense but a suspect defense, in my eyes. Their corners are still young and could be a good matchup with our young and overachieving wideouts.

No matter what they have on the D-Line, if we want to ground and pound (which I'd love to do, by the way) the offensive line needs to play a little better. Williamson has really had a hard time gaining yardage so far, so either some improvement will need to be in order up front or maybe we need to run a different style back like J.P. Byers to better accommodate our deficiencies.

Regardless, the passing game was cooking last week and I expect a lot more of it. We'll see what happens to the running game!

And I apologize to leave you hanging but the report will be a few days away just due to my schedule at school. I am about two weeks ahead of where the report is, however (gotta play when you can!), and am looking forward to getting caught up real soon! Appreciate the support sir!

Guru, love this setup, your graphics are fantastic and the few articles that I've read so far are very enticing. I'm gonna have to go back a few pages to get caught up on the team, but looking forward to tuning into this dynasty! I especially love the matchup graphic, tons of info in there!

              Thanks moose!

I like to think the writing has gotten better in the last couple seasons, and especially since I re-started this project over the summer, so thank you for the compliments there. The matchup graphic has been largely overhauled as well - the stats and team leaders are new for this season. I notice that folks like to look and post about that sort of stuff .. so in it went!

I totally understand that this is a bear of a thread to just start on (now that almost three calendar years have passed since I hit "New Thread"), and this is the part where I tell you that the front page is going to be completely updated at some point.. yada yada yada.

Alas, the first three seasons and the first few games of the fourth are currently archived under the spoilers on post 1.. and brief season recaps are done through season 5 at the bottom of page 1 - I have some graphics that I'll get up in that space at some point. Anything you want to see otherwise you'll have to fish for a bit at the moment - sorry about that! At some point I promise I will get myself all caught up on the first page so new followers like yourself can quickly look back on everything should you so desire.

If you just want to read about this season, I highly suggest you start here with the Playoff semifinal from last season.. a lot happened starting with that game that has led to what you see right now.

              Thanks again for dropping in!

Yeah it should be! Being from the east coast and having watched BC struggle many a time against FSU in years past (well.. except last week), the Seminoles are always a tough team to play in conference.

Though we're probably favored and should win this game considering FSU's team on paper, their record and (non) ranking, you just never know. Considering how much potential our offense showed against Notre Dame, as long as we can shut down Humphrey and Lumpkin defensively I think we'll be in good shape.

Should have this game posted later tonight so we can end the suspense!

                    Sub Special

Cox, Shav, defensive substitutes help UConn put away pesky Seminoles with second half shutout

Corners Kent Newton (left) and Tory Greening (near right, #11) epitomized the "next man up" mentality, as the usual backups were two of the major contributors off the bench in UConn's win.

As the old adage goes, there is no “I” in team.

Much was the case for our UConn Huskies today in Hartford, as UConn strung together a beautiful team effort, especially in the second half, en route to a 30-12 ACC victory at today’s open house against Jimbo Fisher’s Florida State Seminoles. While the Husky offense took a step back in terms of the stellar production from last week’s blowout against Notre Dame, they were boosted by a tremendous defensive performance. Despite being down starting corner Sam Barnett (concussion), and linebackers Scott Coffman and Thomas Willis (both left early with minor upper body injuries), head coach and defensive specialist Stephen Belichick didn’t panic. He flashed a number of different looks and got everyone involved. The results? Flawless. A grand total of five defensive takeaways, twelve total points allowed (zero in the second half) and five sacks of potential first round draft pick Willie Humphrey.

While it was regular stars John Cox (two sacks) and Shavlion Wade (another INT… are we really surprised anymore?) who did lead the way, they did not account for all of the excitement. Bowling Green, Ohio native A.J. Paxston, playing the first significant minutes of his career, tallied five tackles and made a number of impressive plays. Jevon Sapp came on in the second half to tally three tackles and a sack out of the left outside ‘backer spot. Cornerback Kent Newton recorded an INT for the second consecutive week in his first career start, and redshirt freshman Tory Greening locked up the contest in the fourth quarter with his first career QB robbery.

Despite those fantastic stats from the UConn D, once again those numbers hide the fact that Florida State accumulated 383 yards of total offense and played a good first half of football, for the most part. FSU tallied the first points of the game on a 47 yard field goal by reliable senior David Chaufer and nearly pushed the lead to ten points soon thereafter.

Slot man John Lake (left) torched UConn's secondary all game long. Tailback Reggie Lumpkin (right) accounted for FSU's lone touchdown of the day.

Senior slot man John Lake, an All-American sprinter, gave the UConn secondary fits all game long (seven receptions for 144 yards), and on FSU’s second drive, he busted through coverage up the middle for a 69 yard gain that set up the ‘Noles in the red zone. On a speed option, however, Humphrey pitched the ball right into the hands of a waiting James Mandrell - FSU’s first of five turnovers. The big junior defensive end rumbled for a few yards before allowing the Husky offense and senior Isaac Jackson to set up shop. A pair of 20+ yard completions to Chamarkelle Byrom and Lonte’ Speier helped a nine play, 81 yard drive resulting in an Anthony Ricciardi field goal to tie the score.

After some more good defense, FSU regained the lead after a successful long drive. Wideout Trevorris Fisher recorded three first down catches on his own, and the ‘Noles scored on a short option flip to tailback Reggie Lumpkin - but Chaufer missed the extra point, hanging the score at only 9-3. UConn proceeded to take advantage of Chaufer’s rare mistake and rolled off a 17-3 run to end the half. The run started with a TD pass to Ryne Thomas from 12 yards away, continued with an FSU field goal, and UConn responded with a quick four play drive. Each of UConn’s top wideouts, Devin Brown, Speier and Byrom caught passes on that drive, which ended with a beautiful touchdown pass to Byrom from 29 yards out - one where he jumped to make the grab at the five-yard line, then maneuvered around FSU corner Jamil Kemp to trot into the end zone.

Chamarkelle Byrom (left) and Ryne Thomas (right) each hauled in receiving touchdowns for the Husky pass offense.

Wade’s INT two plays later set up UConn to take over again with just 15 seconds in the half and 40 yards to the end zone. Jackson completed a pass to Thomas, and Ricciardi snuck through a 46 yard field goal to give UConn a 20-12 edge entering the halftime.

Shav Wade picked off Humphrey right before the half and set up an Anthony Ricciardi field goal to extend the lead going into the intermission.

Despite only adding ten points in the second half on Ricciardi’s third field goal and a Luke Williamson touchdown run, UConn did more than enough to wrap up victory. Every time FSU looked to grab some momentum, the Huskies slammed the door. Kent Newton ended a Seminoles drive with an interception, his second in as many weeks. Vic Castalanetta made a drive-ending tackle on Leon Sims on a third down catch. Paxston and Sapp teamed up to strip Lumpkin as FSU was about to cross midfield in the fourth quarter. Mike Hill stuffed running back Xavier Bryant in the red zone on a fourth down, and Greening ended the game with his first career interception late in the fourth. A total team effort by starters and backups alike.

On offense, Ice-Jax was efficient again, but somehow quiet even though he completed 20 of his 34 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns. Luke Williamson finally topped 100 yards, finishing six above the century mark on 28 carries with the touchdown in the fourth quarter. Both Byrom and Speier once again finished just shy of 100 yards receiving.

Leading the way on FSU’s 383 yards was Humphrey (20-29, 282 yards, 3 INT’s), 47 yards and a touchdown run from Lumpkin, while the aforementioned Lake led all receivers statistically.

While UConn was favored to win the game, Belichick gave praise to Fisher’s Seminoles for a good game.

“They fought the whole way. It wasn’t our best game, but we pulled it out against a quality opponent that has a lot of talent. We’ll be back at it against Michigan State next week and try to do better.”

With the win, UConn moves to 2-1, and 2-0 in ACC play with a marquee national TV showdown looming next week against non-conference foe Michigan State, who entered Week 3 ranked sixth in the nation. The two teams last met in the 2019 Cactus Bowl, a 49-46 UConn win with Tanner Dean-Lowry quarterbacking over Isaac Jackson.

Trevorris Fisher with the play of the day, recording a rare catch against Shav as he spears the pass with one hand.

Another strong showing by your defense, good team win against FSU.

Holy hell, TDL went OFF against Colorado. Coach Shea obviously knows the right buttons to push to get him to play up to his potential

411 yards on only 16 completions is crazy! 25 per catch for his receiving corps. Wow.

In with the USC stat line in the CAC post - WR Michael Skinner had nine grabs for 232 yards tallies to 25.8 YPG, and tight end Pierre Russell had four grabs for 146 comes out to 36.5 YPG, so Mike you're pretty much spot on in terms of yardage.

Coach Shea is in his fifth year at SC now.. he's had luck with all sorts of different QBs - Jalen Greene (2018 Natty team), Brad Ewing (2019 CFP Finalists) and Cam Miles (2020) were all pure scramblers, whereas Max Browne (2017) and TDL are both balanced QBs. I'm not sure what it is with his spread option system but the ability to put QBs in the position to succeed is superb.. Probably the reason Shea is, IIRC, a career 49-10.

                              Thanks guys!

On paper it seems like a pretty good match up for you Guru. To me your defense vas their offense should be fun to watch. Good luck and hope you bring the "W" home.
