Re: Perseverance : Tommy Jacobs' Career

Both the match and the trip felt like a vacation for the Huskies

Huskies' Hawaiian vacation ends up in 42-7 rout over Warriors

HONOLULU, HI -- The Huskies were heavy favorites over Hawai'i in that meeting, and it wasn't simply a figure of speech. Redshirt freshman Tommy Jacobs passed for 394 yards and three touchdowns in his NCAA debut, and the Husky defense allowed only 122 total yards and 7 points to the Warriors late in the fourth quarter, en route to a 42-7 victory at Aloha Stadium.

Defensive tackle Elijah Qualls also made the best of his FBS debut, recording four sacks and showing why he was a highly-recruited prospect last season. His redshirt year in 2013 has proven to be a blessing more than a curse, as he looked very impressive on the field in his first ever game at the college level.

"Both Jacobs and Qualls had great games today," coach Sarkisian said, "and I guess it proves we were right in redshirting them last season. They have worked very hard all year, and it showed tonight. I'm happy for them that their redshirt year paid dividends. That said, everyone played a great game, because you don't win a game by that kind of margin just because of two players. Everyone of these kids played their part."

It started somewhat slow for the Huskies, having to punt on their first drive of the game, but once the players calmed down, offensive and defensive efficiency started to show. One of the first things that was shown by the Jacobs-run offense was doing away with the fast-paced, no-huddle offense led by Keith Price the last couple seasons, to a steadier, slower pace, but the look of it is more like comparing a runaway train to a steamroller : both are not stopping, they're simply going their own speed.

Running backs Bishop Sankey (with two scores) and Cooper Pelluer ran home the other three of the Huskies touchdowns during the first and third quarters, as the second was an aerial affair for Jacobs, who hit DiAndre Campbell, Kasen Williams and Michael Hartvigson each for a score.

Next week is a bye for the Huskies, who will face off Illinois at home on September 13, the first of a four-game home stretch.

Congrats to Tommy for getting his shot. it really felt like he waited his turn, and that was felt by the fact (or maybe I missed it) that there was kind of no news about Tommy for the most part up till now. I really like what you've got going on here and your presentation is good too. A totally unsolicited bit: At least viewing on the forum, and with my settings, I've determined that 770 px wide is going to provide you you with a clear image (when you do image based presentations) and some of those are 773 so they look slightly fuzzy and then I have to click on them to have them look clear. Odd as it sounds, when people post the really wide ones they actually look less fuzzy and then the added benefit of a desktop or laptop viewer is you can click on it to make it really big.

Awesome performance by Tommy in the opening season victory at Hawai'i. I'd love to see his ratings, if you haven't already posted them somewhere that I might have missed.

Oh yeah. What do you think about the Huskies uniforms? Honestly they were my goal with my dynasty early on, and then I'm glad I looked at the uniforms and tested out some of the teams that I was either getting offers from, or might be waiting for an offer from in the future because I hated them. I had no idea why there were no alternates or anything. Suckage. I hated that era of the Nike uniforms with those curving pointless stripes around the front of the shoulders.

Hey there Hellisan, glad to see you're following, even after I've been away for a long time before taking this back up !

You're right, Tommy did wait for the call, in fact because Price was so dominant compared to the rest of the quarterbacks, I simply couldn't see him jump in and replace Price right away, as well as Price being a senior, I felt it would be nice to see him complete his last season as the starter before bringing in new blood. With all of the quarterbacks for 2014 either being freshmen of sophomores, it added a sense of realism as well, since pretty much any team with that amount of untested quarterbacks would rely on the veteran as much as possible, until they were forced not to.

I'm planning a little interview with both Jacobs and Qualls, who were both highly recruited by Washington prior to the dynasty, so we'll have another insight of what has happened during their redshirt year. I had done a piece on Jacobs during last season on his life as a redshirt, so I'm thinking of kinda picking up a bit from there.

You're right with the image sizes, I had my banners set at 750px wide for the first part of the report, and I saw that they weren't going all the way wide so kinda moved up arbitrarily to 775px, but I'm going to make the change to 770px and see if that fixes a bit of the fuzziness.

I haven't posted his ratings yet, but this is a good idea, I'll do it when I come around to firing up the console. I have his ratings from his recruitment somewhere in an excel file, but not the updated ratings for 2014 after last season's training, so I'll post them up together, likely in a reply to the thread and also in the first few posts, the bio section comes to mind.

Honestly I don't really like the uniforms, I mean they're not that bad, but it's just too bad that either no updates for Washington came in the uniform packs, and that we can't add uniforms to the game through the Teambuilder uniform creator. The Nike uniforms that Washington wears were changed (for the best) in 2014 and a couple times after that IIRC, and they were looking much better than the 2013 and prior unis. I'm not a fan of the curved lines either, but that being said, I feel the purple and gold still looks nice in-game, just not as nice as it could if they could be updated. I'd especially dig a real all black set, with the helmet as well, but we're stuck with gold or white, and that's it.

Thanks again, it's always nice to hear from readers, it makes me go deeper in details about what I have planned and what I write, as well as inspire me for other things !

Re: Perseverance : Tommy Jacobs' Career

Meeting the Huskies : Opening game stars Elijah Qualls and Tommy Jacobs

We caught up with opening game top performers Elijah Qualls and Tommy Jacobs, who also happen to be some of the most recent additions to the team for this season, before their weekend game against Illinois.

Mason Kelley : First things first, thank you guys for this interview. Let's start with you, Elijah. How did you see this first-ever college game for you ?

Elijah Qualls : Well, first of all I knew coming into 2014 that I would be a starter on the defensive line, because of all the seniors departing, so I went about it just like any other game I played before, doing my best for myself and for the team. The opener in Hawai'i was simply a culmination of everything I did last year, and I do think I've played well enough to thank the coaches for their confidence in me.

MK : A performance like that (4 sacks) in a career opener is pretty eye-opening, don't you think ? Is it something you want to emulate week in and week out ?

EQ : Obviously I'd like to play to the same standards in every game, but I also realize that opposing teams can adjust to the way we play, so while I'll be playing to the best of my abilities on every gameday, I know that sometimes what I'll be doing is taking up attention to let some of my teammates get the important stops. I mean, at this rate, I'll be racking 60 sacks (yeah, we're going to the National Championship this season ! Remember I called it here first !), so if I don't get voted as the Heisman winner, it'll be somewhat of a disappointment !

MK : Similar thing for you Tommy, as a near-400 yards passing day in the first college game of your career is something we don't often see these days, how do you feel about that ?

Tommy Jacobs : Well, the thing about being a quarterback is, you get most of the spotlight on the offense, but if you don't have receivers who get open and catch your passes, you don't gain yards. If you don't have linemen who block the other guys so they don't get to you, you dont even get to throw the ball. Gaining yards make me look good, but if I don't have all these guys around, I'm not gaining any yards by myself. It really is a team effort, and with such great teammates, they're the ones who allow me to perform like that.

MK : What are your expectations for this season, as a player and as a team ?

TJ : I always try to go out there and be the best player I can be, but I honestly don't have expectations per se. Performances like the one against Hawai'i are great, but there are always things to work out, to iron in each performance. I threw an interception and was sacked a couple times, so there are things I can try and do better the next time out. As for the team, the expectation is always to go into each game and win, and if we do that we'll still be playing next January !

MK : Last thing guys, how do you see the next game against Illinois ?

EQ : I don't really try to think too much about our next opponents, the way I see things, no matter what the team they play for, it's basically always a struggle between myself and another guy, and whoever lets the other guy pass is the loser. I simply play to win every time I'm on the field.

TJ : I know we lost against them last season, when the guys played in Chicago. As I was redshirting last season, I only got to see the game on TV, but there are guys on the other side that'll be there on the field when we face them, so obviously I'll have to check them out, see what they're doing in this or that situation, and act accordingly. Obviously we don't want to lose again to the same team on back-to-back seasons, so we'll go into this game to come out winning at the end !

SEATTLE, WA -- Washington had a rough start to the game, down 14-10 at halftime before the defense stepped up and closed the door on their opponents, while quarterback Tommy Jacobs had another great performance under center for the Huskies. Jacobs went 27-for-46 with 345 yards passing and 2 touchdowns, and running back Bishop Sankey, while held to only 90 yards on 26 carries, added another score to help the Huskies triumph over Illinois, 31-21.

"We wanted to win this for the guys who lost last year in Chicago," Jacobs said. "It was a heartbreaker last season over there for them and us new guys wanted to make things right for those who were there." It was certainly good for last season's veterans to see those new faces help them get the win this season, as even without some of their best performers from last year, Illinois is still a dangerous team.

Illinois quarterback Wes Lunt gained 332 yards through the air and added another 49 on the ground to lead the attack, but it ultimately wasn't enough to break through the Husky wall of defense.

"The kids played great, they didn't let down even when things didn't go their way," coach Sarkisian added after the game. "Some drives didn't really go as we would've expected, but we managed to turn things around and work together, and we finally got the win. I was especially pleased with our second half, as we calmly set up on stopping them and make the simple plays to get ourselves in front."

The Huskies will play their next (and final) non-conference game next week, at home against the Georgia State Panthers, and then take a break before starting conference play on October 4th against Arizona State.

Just caught up on this and love the idea of going from high school to college to the pros. The story throughout Tommy's high school career was great and I truly thought that Notre Dame was going to be too tough to pass up but I love the choice of the Huskies. It seems like a redshirt year did him wonders. His career is off to a great start and having two studs in Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Bishop Sankey definitely make things easier on the young signal caller. I'll be following for sure!

Thanks R1zzo23, that you're following this means a lot to me. Though I'm not commenting on your dynasty as well (something I plan to address shortly), be sure that I'm following it, love what you're doing with the graphics and how you're doing things in the actual dynasty as well.

Yes, I really did think a lot about Notre Dame when I made the inital college choice, but what won me over is that Washington is pretty much set up for the type of quarterback I like to use, with lots of passing formations and interesting run plays as well. I'm not that much of an option type of player, as I prefer the dynamic of operating under center, with the occasional shotgun formations as well, but always with at least three wide/slot receivers on the field. Washington's offensive playbook was the one I felt the more suited for this. That, paired with the storyline-wise decision of a Midwest kid going out west to play football instead of staying in or near the Big Ten, I thought it would bring up some interesting ideas.

Of course having Jenkins and Sankey will help him over the course of the season, but I think next season will be even more interesting (even though I'm only two games in this one), with them and all of the offensive line gone, I'm expecting 2015 to be much harder in the backfield.

Thanks for your comments, and keep'em coming !
