Panthers' defense almost spoil the party, but Huskies escape the upset

SEATTLE, WA -- Redshirt freshman Tommy Jacobs threw four interceptions during the game, but the Husky defense stepped up to bail him out by only allowing two touchdowns to the Panthers in a 35-14 Washington win. Jacobs offset the interceptions by completing four of his passes for touchdowns, two of them going to junior wide receiver Jaydon Mickens.

Georgia State proved to be a worthy opponent during the first half, holding the Huskies to only one score late in the second quarter, but the Purple and Gold quickly got back on their feet in the third quarter, scoring three times and putting the game beyond the reach of the visitors. "I made costly mistakes in the first half," Jacobs said after the game, "and that put us in a tough situation at the break. Fortunately we were able to come back, I personally started to get down to the basics, simply getting the ball to the best target I could find in each situation, and relying on the ground game a little more since Bishop (Sankey) was in his zone today."

"I could've pulled him out early in the game," coach Steve Sarkisian added, "but I don't think it would've had the same effect on him. What I wanted to see was how he could get out of the situation he placed himself in, and I am pleased with how he reacted to that. Of course it wasn't an ideal outing for him today, and we'll be looking at how things could and should have been instead. The bye week we have next week will allow us to do just that, tweak things up and work with Tommy so he can be the best he can for us."

The Huskies will host the Arizona State Sun Devils in two weeks from now, after a bye week next week.

Ouch 4 INTs never feels good but to be able to pull out a win despite the turnovers is always good. Stay positive: 4 TD games are always impressive.

You're right, it really hurt having my passes intercepted one after another, I mostly had to rely on the defense to come up with big plays so we would not fall behind too much, and they did well enough to keep us in the game. The third quarter really turned things around, I was able to keep things going our way, make simple plays and it finally paid off.

Those 4 TDs are almost half of what Jacobs has this season with 9, but it is the INTs that are costly, so I'll be looking to lower that by a good amount, especially with conference play about to begin.

Thanks again for the comments !

                      Analyzing the Huskies conference schedule

With conference play just around the corner, and the Huskies undefeated in their three non-conference games, a bye week is a good time to go and look at this season's conference opponents.

October 4 vs Arizona State : It is interesting to know that both teams' quarterbacks that were in last season's shootout and that ended in triple overtime won't be there this season, as Huskies' Keith Price is now in the NFL and Arizona State's Michael Eubank should not be playing as he's a backup, barring an injury to starter Taylor Kelly between now and next week. That said, this should be a quite interesting matchup still, as both teams will surely be looking to exploit the passing game, so it could prove to again be a high-scoring affair.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 31-24

October 11 vs Stanford : Last season's meeting between the Huskies and Cardinal ended in an upset when Washington knocked then-#1 Stanford off their perch in Stanford Stadium. It is hard to say at this point in the season, with both teams recording three wins, but Stanford's one loss as of now against Arizona showed a weak rush defense (although it was against a strong running team), something that the Huskies will have to try to exploit.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 28-20

October 18 @ Arizona : Despite their loss against UNLV in the opening week, the Wildcats have stunned Stanford last week in a 31-17 win on the road. Arizona boasts a great running offense led by last season Heisman candidate Ka'Deem Carey, but that will hopefully be offset by Washington's formidable run defense. Their passing defense is also not so great, which should allow Jacobs and co some room downfield. While we likely won't see a repeat of last season's Washington upset of then-ranked Arizona, it is a game that the Huskies should be winning.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 27-14

October 25 @ California : The Bears are already in a better shape than last season when they went 1-11, having notched two wins already, including one against Arizona State. However, two of their losses have been against conference opponent (USC and Colorado) and they lost their season opener against Northwestern by shutout. They've got a good passing defense but below-average rushing defense, which are things that the Huskies will look to attack if they are to repeat last season's result against the Bears, when they won 42-27. However, they'll have to remember that these are not the same Bears as 2013.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 35-13

November 1st vs Utah : The Huskies meet the Utes in 2014 for the first time since the 2012 season, when Washington won 34-15 at home in Seattle. Utah doesn't have great offensive weapons in 2014, although they have a stout defense that's pretty equally good against both passing and rushing. Their offense though will likely be lacking against Washington's defense, so we don't see anything that would warrant a Utah win in this matchup. However, we are still early in the season, and things can change.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 31-14

November 8 @ Colorado : The Huskies will play in Boulder this season, after last season's home meeting against the Buffaloes which ended in a Husky win. Colorado is on a strong start this season, recording convincing wins one after the other after their opening week loss against state rival Colorado State. They're a high-scoring fooball team who likes to run with the ball, but their average defense will be tested against a consistent Huskies team.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 42-31

November 15 @ Oregon State : The Beavers will be out to avenge last season's blowout loss against Washington, and they have the tools to make it a reality this season. They have an explosive, run-oriented offense that will be sure to cause headaches on the Huskies' defense, but they can still rely on their passing game if the need arises. They also have one of the best defenses in the country in the turnover category, something that can create chaos for the Huskies, as we saw last week against Georgia State. It just might be the Beavers' year.
Prediction : Oregon State wins 35-28

November 22 vs Oregon : The Ducks started the 2014 season as one of the heavy favorites to go all the way, but two successive losses against unranked NC State and then-#15 USC have taken their toll. The Huskies will be looking to avenge their last season loss against Oregon, and if the Ducks continue to be shaken up during conference play, this could very well happen.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 31-21

November 29 @ Washington State : The Apple Cup rivalry is never something to take lightly. Even though Washington State has had a rough start, being winless this season as of now, they will surely be looking to take the Cup back to Pullman after losing it last season in Seattle. Considering the season these two teams are likely to have, it's looking more probable that the Apple Cup will stay with the Purple and Gold.
                      Prediction : Washington wins 41-14

It should be noted that Washington will play all of their conference games in a row, so late season fatigue will likely be even more of a factor. We will be on the lookout for these matchups. Our analysts still believe that Washington will finish 11-1 (8-1), which would be an improvement over last season's record of 9-3 (7-2), but it is Oregon State that holds both teams' destinies as to who will be crowned Pac-12 North Champion, and who will get to play for the conference championship, a game which will be crucial if a Pac-12 team is to be a part of the first-ever College Football Playoff.
