    CAC Sign-Ups - 2022 season

Friends, it is that time of 'chise season again. CAC time!!!!!

I have a tendency to play ahead a bit in game as compared to where I am on here due to my time constraints and other factors. As a result, I'm nearing the end of the 2021 season and am hoping to wrap up the season over my winter break in a couple weeks; I'll do my best to progressively catch up here. I want to get CAC sign-ups out in the open for anyone interested so I can have this taken care of well in advance.

Create-A-Coach (CAC) in this dynasty started almost as a joke early in this dynasty's run to add Kaelyn Willingham and Sam Freday from other popular dynasties of old.. it only blossomed from there and is now a staple of the dynasty (and likely the reason that a lot of folks still follow this ). Next season, 2022, will mark the seventh season of our create-a-coach side story featuring, you, me, the followers of this 'chise and our coaching alter egos. (Yay!)

Post any time between now and the end of the season to get involved, just so I can get information for all of the off-season posts I need. You can PM this to me or post it in here. I'll insert your coach into the game as a coordinator. First jobs usually come at a mid-major-ish school, in the geographic area of your choice (if possible), in place of one of the fake coaches that pop up, and we watch the action unfold. With a little luck, skill and moxie, you can carve out your road to coaching glory with UConn, young Coach Belichick and our rival schools.

Also note.. I'd never try to sway you in one direction but if you are interested.. I'm running dangerously low on offensive coordinators. If you become a defensive coordinator I will reward you with a Power 5 DC job!

    Thank you for your participation!!!

2019 and the near-playoff run is indeed a long time ago, I'm afraid. However, you have been recruiting extremely well in the last two years and you have a lot of four-star recruits lingering on the roster (linebacker Edmunds, defensive end Summers, a defensive back MacCormick who is on the bench right now), but I'm not sure if you'll be able to see this come to fruition.

Sometimes I hope guys get fired to try their luck at a better situation, but in your case I think if you hang on two more years or so the Boilers could be good again and, subsequently, Coach Smith will start to look good again.

I love the option too, and I've run it in other dynasties, but defending it is an absolute nightmare. Especially with Syracuse having a couple of good tailbacks, we could be in for an interesting game. Statistics, though, show that we're 2-0 against our last two pure triple option teams. Here's hoping!

Broadricke out for "2 to 3 weeks"

While UConn has remained rather injury-free so far this season, one member of the UConn second string has found his way to the injury list at an inopportune time. Backup defensive tackle Jeremy Broadricke, who Coach Stephen Belichick was hoping to get some more snaps moving forward, has been diagnosed with a calf pull and will be out for today's game and at least one more week.

The redshirt sophomore will be given the chance to rest up over the Huskies' bye next week in hopes of playing against UMass in two weeks.

Belichick's comments about getting Broadricke more time lead many UConn reporters to believe that he may have started if healthy - fifth year senior Johnquez Blair has disappointed this year with just nine tackles to his name and no sacks. Belichick was unavailable for comment, while defensive coordinator Josh Conklin simply said "We'll evaluate everything when Jeremy is healthy again".

Blair and Broadricke are the only two defensive tackles listed on the depth chart; true freshmen Matt Tellers and Ethan Buckingham are both redshirting this fall. The staff could elect to burn the redshirt for either, or, in the more likely scenario, play reserve junior linebacker A.J. Paxston or senior defensive end Brett Lowery in that place if necessary.

The Orange aren't too impressive on either side of the ball. And if they do pass you know exactly where they're going with Daniels on the receiving end of 39 of their 58 completions. Put Shav on him, keep the option in check and I think you'll come out on top for sure.

            Having a Record Day!

Williamson, Wade break career records as UConn waxes Syracuse

The two greatest players in UConn history, perhaps? Williamson and Wade both broke career records, for rushing yards and interceptions, respectively.

After a trio of first quarter of interceptions from star quarterback Isaac Jackson, UConn looked to be in trouble in a hostile Carrier Dome crowd all decked out in Orange for the biggest game in Syracuse, New York in a long time. Despite this, UConn coach Stephen Belichick has preached team ball and playing within oneself all year long, with the promise of success in the distance.

On the strength of another team effort, led by two of UConn’s best football players ever, the Huskies continued their push to the top of the ACC standings with a 44-14 thumping of the resurgent Syracuse Orange in a surprising midseason top-25 matchup.

With UConn’s best on record watch, both junior corner Shav Wade and redshirt junior tailback Luke Williamson didn’t disappoint and were the key players in the rout this afternoon.

After weeks of waiting and quiet play, Wade found himself sprinting to the end zone to break the game open in the third quarter. Right when his team needed it most, Shav was there, yet again. Fitting that the most dominant corner in school history broke the career interceptions record with a pick six? I’d say certainly.

With UConn nursing a 13-7 lead into the halftime break and the Orange having received the second half kick, Wade made a gorgeous read on a Marcus Galloway pass, jumped in front of receiver Jacob Woods and made a house call, tallying record interception number 21 in his illustrious career. The 21st now puts Wade first all-time in UConn history in that statistic, passing Jamar Summers’ 20 set in 2017. That pick also puts Shav at seven on the 2021 campaign, just four shy of tying Summers’ record in that stat.

The humble corner from Union, New Jersey trotted back to the sideline next to linebacker Mike Hill, record ball in hand, with a team waiting to swarm him in congratulations. The excited energy rubbed off on the rest of the team; Jackson threw two of his three touchdown passes in that frame to Lonte’ Speier and #2 tailback J.P. Byers, exclamating a 21 point third quarter that let UConn jump out to a 34-7 lead. From there out, UConn relied on one man to move the offense and grind out the win.

Ryne Thomas (LEFT) and Lonte' Speier (RIGHT) added another touchdown to their season hauls on the afternoon.

Luke Williamson entered today’s contest also on record watch, though much less under the radar. The fourth year junior sat 152 yards behind Donald Brown and first place for the career rushing mark. After a rather tame start to the season, Williamson rolled in and firmly erased any such talk, proceeding to drop the boom on the Orange front seven to the tune of a career-high 243 yards on 38 carries (6.3 per). With eight runs of ten-plus yards, 118 of those yards came in the first half; he had the record in the third quarter.

Now at 3,891 yards in his storied career, Williamson surpassed both Josh Marriner and Brown as the new top runner in UConn history, while also passing 1,000 yards rushing for the second consecutive season (he had 965 as a redshirt freshman, preventing him from three). The homegrown Connecticut product from Nautilus Park got emotional on the sideline as he became aware of his accomplishment. “I’m so happy to do this for my home school. This is so great.”

Though certainly quiet and unassuming at times, Williamson has fought hard for every yard and has no doubt cemented his legacy on the Mt. Rushmore of UConn football. Williamson has also taken charge of the career carries record and is also closing in on UConn’s career touchdown mark; though he didn’t score in today’s contest, Williamson has racked up 50 rushing touchdowns, just five behind Marriner’s 55.

Despite the rocky beginning to the contest with freshman Gunnar Marzin picking off Ice-Jax twice in the end zone on consecutive drives, it was certainly a festive ending to a highly successful road trip. UConn’s top ranked run defense held the Orange’s potent rushing attack well below their season average with just 166 yards - star tailback Joey Wilkerson only gained 25 of those. Fullback Edmond Johnson was the leading rusher with 59 yards on six carries, with Galloway gaining 40 on the ground from his QB spot. #2 tailback Mikel Gibson ran for ‘Cuse’s lone touchdown on the ground. Marvin Daniel had three catches, albeit all in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand, for 105 yards and a late score. The touchdown came on a 75 yard strike where Daniel simply beat the UConn secondary over the top and shed a tackle from our weekly punching bag Tony Rush.

Freshman Gunnar Marzin picked off Ice-Jax twice, while Adam Gilmore did once.

Marvin Daniel’s fourth quarter explosion was one of the few offensive highlights for Syracuse.

The Huskies also tallied four robberies of Galloway through the air as part of their six turnovers in total with Wade, Sam Barnett, John Cox and Vic Castalanetta all snaring interceptions. Thomas Willis and Johnquez Blair picked up fumble recoveries on ill-advised option pitches to make a tough day for the Orange all the way around.

With the margin for error appearing to be slim if UConn wants to return to the College Football Playoff, the win will go a long way toward building their resume. Even so, Coach Belichick would seem to rather talk about the first half, where UConn struggled to do much of anything.

“We need to play complete games. I know we can pull away in the second half, but we may not always be able to do that. Mistake-free football means winning football. Neverthelesss, there’s a lot of good to take away from today; a lot of guys played well. And my congratulations to Shav and Luke as well; they’re both tremendous players with bright futures still ahead of them and great legacies here at UConn. We’ll keep working over the bye and try to get better against UMass in two weeks.”

Question improvement all you want, but there is no denying that the Huskies are now riding a three-game winning streak into their bye week; the average margin of victory is a whopping 34 points, the offense has hit another gear and the defense has been fantastic. Can they keep it going? We’ll see. UConn moves to 5-2 and 4-1 in conference play, and will move to at least third in the ACC standings. Syracuse falls to 4-3 with their loss.

Other Game Notes: Starting outside linebacker Scott Coffman left the game with an apparent upper body injury and did not return. His status moving forward will be determined at a later date. Redshirt freshman Jevon Sapp played in his place.

Strong second half showing for the Huskies with four interceptions! John Cox (LEFT), Sam Barnett (CENTER) and Vic Castalanetta (RIGHT) are featured here.

For all the great defensive play today, there was at least one player for whom that was not true. The obligatory Tony Rush blooper reel has two high (or low) lights today!

Yeah, it's a huge relief that Broadricke's injury is minor as I mentioned that there's no depth there right now - I want to keep the redshirts on both Buckingham and Tellers if possible. With the bye to rest up I think that we'll be back to full strength at that position soon. All you need to do with the CAC is submit the form and I do the rest. It's totally your call in the end but it's fun to watch! Thanks for checking in bud.

Despite that, they played well for a while .. until we stampeded in the third quarter. The pass game wasn't much of a problem as all of Daniel's catches came in the fourth quarter when the game was out of hand already, and no one else stood out. Ralph Duncan scared me a bit as he was 6'7, but was a non-factor against Sam Barnett.

I'm very proud of our run defense. We had problems stopping the fullback Johnson but they didn't go to him very often, luckily. They tried to spread the ball around a bit and it didn't work out well. Team effort all the way for us and we did what we needed to do! Momentum is increasing so hopefully the bye week doesn't trip us up, but we do get lowly UMass in two weeks, so I'm feeling confident.

Thank you nofx! I believe 22 is the youngest we can make Coach Brihay, but we'll find out for sure when that time comes. Plus, I think we've finally topped Equanimeous St. Brown Sr. as the best coach name of all time.

O'Toole is a man among boys in the MAC. He's single handedly going to get me a job offer somewhere else (hopefully)

Recruiting: UConn lands first two commits, including #1 RB Swift; others nearing decisions

Setting the Stage: For those curious: I am using mattrd39's 2016 recruiting class, with the top ~500 players' names edited to make everyone "fake". Much thanks to him for his hard work on that project!

After arguably one of the top classes in school history last year, UConn enters the 2022 recruiting cycle needing to heavily target certain positions. With the skill position slots largely settled for years to come, Coach Stephen Belichick and assistants Bill Cubit and Josh Conklin have aggressively set out to reload with forthcoming graduations set to affect tight end and linebacker, as well as continuing to work with finding quality starting offensive linemen with the poor play and inconsistency so far this year.

Here's some food for thought for you: Stephen Belichick has successfully recruited more five-star prospects in his ten months on the job than Bob Diaco did in seven years. Odd for the kid who's never sniffed a college coaching job? Sure. But chalk it up to good help.

Belichick landed perhaps the prize of his first full recruiting class as part of his first pair of commits in the 2022 cycle.

Top-ranked tailback Ashanti Swift, who visited UConn during the Battle for New England weekend, has officially committed to don the Husky blue to start his college career. Though Swift has a lower overall than was projected post-scouting, there is still a lot to like about the Paramus, New Jersey native. Swift is a very balanced runner with solid agility, speed and power; he could figure immediately into the UConn running back rotation depending on what Luke Williamson and J.P. Byers decide to do with their futures in the spring. Don't forget we still have redshirt sophomore Mike Molden, as well as true freshmen Scottie Phillips and Jonathan Shaffer on the roster at running back as well.

The other commit over this bye week is fellow New Jersey native and linebacker Avan Goulding. Goulding is a very interesting prospect with a lot of seemingly isolated skills. He can hit, he's a good block shedder, but his coverage and tackling need work, and he isn't very fast. Nevertheless, Goulding seems to have a lot of upside and with a linebacking core that will again take a big hit this year courtesy of graduation, he may carve out a role early.

The four star prospects excite me a lot, in particular Marshawn Dortch. UConn is in a close recruiting race for him along with Alabama. Though not a great athlete, Dortch is very refined skill wise, a sure tackler with a mean streak. With graduations of Thomas Willis this year and Alex Brown, Mike Hill and A.J. Paxston next year, Dortch is set to contribute immediately should he commit.

Linzell Tyson is an exciting prospect as well who appears to be capable of playing a few different positions. A high school quarterback, UConn is loaded at that spot (we'll touch on it later), but Tyson could also slot in as a defensive back, wide receiver or even a tailback should the extreme happen.

Morgan Bench is an interesting target considering UConn's depth at QB; heir apparent Jordan Brown is still in the building and still in his place, with a loaded depth chart behind. I have been hearing rumblings that third stringer Alex Paige, a true sophomore recruited as an athlete, may be on the chopping block and move to fullback, wide receiver or tight end as soon as the end of the season to best utilize his skills and free up the logjam a bit. With Isaac Jackson graduating at the end of the season, should Paige be on the move and Bench commit, UConn would be left with a depth chart that looks like this:

                            Jordan Brown
                            T.J. Appleby
                            Kelly Carlson
                            Morgan Bench

Bench would be interesting to keep around considering that he reminds media members a bit of Bryant Shirreffs in that he can run and a throw a bit, but not excel at either.

                            (Left-Right): Dortch, Tyson, Bench

A lot of tight ends are out there too: Modos and Sarria are likely not coming, but I'll be happy with any of them. As it stands, we have two on the roster now who are both graduating. Whoever comes could start immediately. If I'm wishing though, I like Rahmel Petersen and Kenny Graves because of his size.

                            --------------------------------
                            Others

Here are a few more targets who could be in UConn's fray sooner rather than later:

                            #98 ATH Tevari Lindsay - 3*, 6'4, 288 lbs., North Haven, CT
                            TOP SCHOOL: UConn

#16 MLB Jayson Meier (Run Stopper) - 3*, 6'0, 222 lbs., Sayreville, NJ
                            TOP SCHOOL: UConn

#165 ATH Nate Dotson (JUCO) - 1*, 6'3, 275 lbs., West Haven, CT
                            TOP SCHOOL: UConn

#95 OLB Vasean Gatewood (Run Stopper) - 3*, 6'5, 232 lbs., Maplewood, NJ
                            TOP SCHOOL: Kentucky

                            #56 DE Ontrell Jackson (Balanced) - 3*, 6'2, 255 lbs., Bellmore, NY
                            TOP SCHOOL: UConn

We already talked about Lindsay briefly as he visited over Battle For New England weekend as well. The likely offensive lineman is probably going to commit any week now. Gatewood and Meier have me intrigued; Meier is not polished but has high upside, while I think Gatewood is sliding under the radar a bit. He has great size for his position but some discipline issues as well, likely stunting his recruiting process.

                            And a Collection of Misses

Feel free to laugh as we seriously thought we had a shot at some of these guys. Alas, as with every season, there are hits and misses. Enjoy a crudely-put together gallery of some of the kids who won't be attending UConn next fall.

He's certainly playing like a man amongst boys, I'm very happy to see that. I don't want to jinx anything, but CMU, 5-2, stronghold on the MAC West, lethal offense... maybe. Just maybe. I hope.

I'm certainly planning on being here for the long haul so hopefully you'll continue to read along. Thank you for Coach Sorbera as well! Huge win also because 3-4 looks a lot less dire than 2-5 . Nevertheless the defense played great considering that Wisconsin has three or four really good running backs - and hopefully this win will get Purdue headed in the right direction. *Crosses Fingers*

                              Bowl Name Game Changes

Now that we're nearing bowl season in thread and in real life, I like to have a little fun. As usual, because corporate sponsors change every year, I like to do the same. I have frequent encounters with the DB editor so I like to try and .. get creative, if you will. This year, I got too creative, perhaps, but nevertheless, with some editor magic we're going back to bowl roots. I've re-created the Silicon Valley Classic, the Tampa Cigar Bowl, the Garden State Bowl, and everyone's favorite, the Bahamas Bowl, and did some other changes too in terms of corporate sponsorship.

I'm going to work at removing all bowl tie-ins as well, just because that's kind of stupid and I want to avoid the Cincinnati/AAC problem that we had last year. That may or may not be noticeable when we get to the end of the season.

All changes I've made are in a nice list below for your viewing pleasure, with a full bowl map for this year below.

Injury Report: Coffman shelved for three weeks with pec injury

Starting outside linebacker Scott Coffman (RS-JR, 81 OVR, Piedmont, AL) left last week's game against Syracuse and has been diagnosed with a slight abdominal tear. Coffman's injury will require some rest and he'll be ruled out for at least the next two games against UMass and North Carolina State. Coffman is in his first year as a starter and has recorded just 23 tackles in total (5 for loss).

Redshirt freshman Jevon Sapp (72 OVR, Gastonia, NC) will start in Coffman's place. He played extremely well against Syracuse last week with seven tackles (four for loss) and has gotten praise from defensive coordinator Josh Conklin about his performance in recent weeks.

In addition to Coffman, the other member of UConn's injury report, defensive tackle Jeremy Broadricke, will be held out another week as his calf is not quite 100%; he will miss the UMass game. Coach Belichick has announced that he plans to start Broadricke at defensive tackle when he returns from injury. Senior Johnquez Blair will continue to start in the meantime.

Bobby V pleased with Belichick so far

UConn's evil.. I mean athletic director, Bobby Valentine, spoke to the Hartford Courant about the state of the athletic department, and noted his pleasure with the job that new head coach Stephen Belichick has done this year.

Plus, our football team has done alright this year, we're still in contention in the ACC. I give Bill Cubit and Josh Conklin a lot of credit too, they're veterans who have been around awhile and have helped tremendously to get Stephen acclimated to the college game.
Of course, Valentine chased away the most successful coach in school history last year, so one would hope that he is satisfied with the results of his actions. Thankfully, that appears to be the case.

Belichick and his noticeably calm demeanor (unlike the extroverted Bob Diaco) have led UConn to a 6-2 record in 2021, and is 5-1 in ACC play. His offense has differed from Bob Diaco's, and has made Isaac Jackson a feature of the offense instead of a facilitator as he was much of the time in recent years. Belichick also hauled in his second five-star recruiting prospect earlier this week in tailback Ashanti Swift, so an upward trajectory for the football team appears to be continuing.
