Huskies linebacker Scott Lawyer recovers a California fumble

Turnovers sink the Golden Bears as the Huskies pick up win #7

BERKELEY, CA -- An impressive display from the defense created five turnovers in favor of Washington, as the Huskies defeated California 41-20 to stay undefeated. Third string running back Jessie Callier scored twice and broke the century mark on the ground in his first game as a starter, and quarterback Tommy Jacobs, while falling back into some bad habits by throwing three interceptions, more than made up for them by going 28-for-37 with 343 yards and three touchdowns, two of them going to tight end Michael Hartvigson.

The injury bug hit yet again the Huskies though, as this time wide receiver DiAndre Campbell dislocated his left elbow, and will likely miss the remainder of the season. "He was tackled hard on his first catch of the game, and it's hard to tell if it was the tackle itself or his fall to the ground that injured him," coach Sarkisian told the reporters after the game. "We'll have our medical staff re-evaluate his situation, but it doesn't look good at the moment."

Despite losing Campbell early in the game, the Washington attack was relentless, both on the ground and through the air, scoring 5 touchdowns against the Golden Bears. That said, it was mainly the effort made by the defensive unit that enabled the offense to put up this kind of performance, repeatedly stealing the ball from the California offense. Safety Trevor Walker picked two passes off California quarterback Austin Hinder, while cornerback Travell Dixon intercepted one and recovered a fumble to stop the Bears' drives.

The Huskies will be coming back home next week to host the Utah Utes, who are coming off a tough loss at home against UCLA.

Been smooth sailing for Jacobs and Washington so far. Tough stretch coming up with Colorado and Oregon State on the road, good luck.

Thanks ! I was also apprehensive about the game vs the Beavers, and after seeing what Colorado are able to do this season so far, it's got me thinking about them too, but everything can happen. I've had some tough games against Illinois, Stanford, and even California last time gave us some trouble at times, so I'm not taking anything for granted for the rest of the season.

Thanks again for the comments, and keep them coming !

Washington defensive lineman Josh Shirley celebrating his quarterback sack on Travis Wilson

Huskies defense show no mercy, en route to a 21-6 win

SEATTLE, WA -- Home field advantage took litteral sense during the Washington-Utah game. The Husky defense showed why they're one of the best in all of college football this season, creating four turnovers and sacking Utah quarterback Travis Wilson no less than six times. It was also another good day at the office for Washington quarterback Tommy Jacobs, gaining 324 yards through the air while throwing two touchdown passes to tight end Michael Hartvigson.

"It was a tough defensive game, even though we managed to score three times," coach Sarkisian said after the game." We had to dig deep and show our character against this defense, and it turned out well for us. Of course, a big part of that win was how our own defense played, they put pressure on the passer and on the receivers, and they took out just enough of their rushing attack to get them to play from behind most of the game."

Another Husky fell to an injury this week, as cornerback Marcus Peters will be sidelined indefinitely with an upper body injury. "It does seem serious enough to take him out of the lineup for a long period," defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox told the press. "As far as we know, Marcus has at least one or two broken ribs, but we'll know more after he's been checked out by our medical staff. As of now, this is the latest info we have on his condition."

This last home game was just a short stop in Seattle for the Huskies, as they'll be on the road for their next two important games, first on November 8 against Colorado and then again on the 15th to face the Oregon State Beavers, in a game that may be decisive for the Pac-12 North Division title.

Washington players celebrate one of the many touchdowns of the afternoon

Huskies too much for Buffaloes, scoring 8 touchdowns on Colorado

BOULDER, CO -- What was being hailed as a possible shootout when looking at both teams' records ended up a one-way affair, as Washington proved too much for Colorado to handle. Huskies quarterback Tommy Jacobs tied a school record by throwing five touchdown passes, converting 30 of his 41 pass attempts for 422 yards in the win.

"I felt very, very good out there," Jacobs told the reporters after the game. "I don't know if it was because today is my birthday, or the Rockies' air, or the fact that I've been nominated for the O'Brien award, but I felt very good today. I was confident in my throws, my movements, my receivers, everything was going great. Tying that record is not really the important part, but that's nice to know."

"Everything was going good for us today," coach Sarkisian added. "Our offense, our defense, our special teams, it seemed like it was easy to coach today, everyone understood very well what we had to do, and execution was almost flawless." Yet again, another Husky fell on the battlefield, this time it was wide receiver Jaydon Mickens, who will also be sidelined for quite some time with a broken tailbone. The receiver ranks are shrinking almost by the hour, with Mickens and DiAndre Campbell both out of the action for a long period.

Washington will be playing away from home again next week, as they'll be visiting rival Oregon State for a game that will have strong implications on the Pac-12 North standings. The winner of this matchup will make a strong case to go to the Pac-12 Championship game.
