Washington defensive lineman Josh Shirley after his fumble recovery for a touchdown

Defense does it again, as Huskies down rival Beavers 31-25

CORVALLIS, OR -- It was a very defensive affair at Reser Stadium, as both teams were limited to less than 400 total yards, something either one of them hadn't done in a long time (it is in fact a season-low for the Huskies). Husky quarterback Tommy Jacobs had a tough day, getting picked off three times while amassing 311 yards on 22 completions and a touchdowns, but the defense saved the day with two late turnovers off which Washington would score 7 points.

Washington defensive lineman Josh Shirley recovered a Sean Mannion fumble early in the fourth quarter and returned it all the way over 55 yards for the score, which would put the Huskies ahead by 11 points at that time, 28-17. After an Oregon State score and a Husky field goal, with the score 31-25, redshirt freshman cornerback Jermaine Kelly came up with a timely interception that ultimately sealed the fate for the Beavers. A last-second Hail Mary attempt would fall incomplete, and the Huskies escaped the upset and clinched the Pac-12 North Division title at the same time. They will have to wait for their opponents in the Pac-12 Championship Game to be confirmed, as USC, Arizona and UCLA all have a chance to finish on top.

"I'm very satisfied with the way our defense played," coach Sarkisian told the press after the game. "Rivalry games like this make it all the more important to play good defense, and I can say for sure that both teams did that in this game. We got lucky some times, but we ended up capitalizing on our chances more than they could on theirs. We'll still have to play better in our remaining games if we are to continue our streak of good results, but while I'm nt putting the blame on that, scheduling hasn't been our ally this season. Playing our conference schedule all in one long string of games is taking its toll, as you can see by our injury list."

Next game for the Huskies will be Senior Day, and hated rivals Oregon will be in town. The Ducks have faltered after their opening season success, but they're still a dangerous team if they can install their game plan. The Huskies will then close out their Pac-12 schedule with the Apple Cup in Pullman the week after.

Re: Perseverance : Tommy Jacobs' Career

SEATTLE, WA -- Once again a strong performance from freshman quarterback Tommy Jacobs helped the Huskies win, this time 35-10 against hated rivals Oregon. Jacobs finished the game with 383 yards passing and 5 touchdowns, matching for the second time this season the school record for touchdowns in a game. The Huskies' defense was still as stingy as ever, only allowing 231 total offensive yards to their opponents and recovering a fumble near Oregon's goalline, leading to a score in the second quarter.

"I'll say it again, I felt really good coming into this game," Jacobs said after the game. "Everything came easy, everyone seemed open when they needed to, and I simply had to chuck balls to my receivers without thinking too much about the defense. Add to that, getting a win against Oregon, and that pretty much sums it all." "Tommy had a great day out there, and we really have to raise our hats to him for this win today," coach Sarkisian added. "We still have one other game remaining, and that's one that has been circled out in red for a long time."

Washington will be traveling next week to defend the Apple Cup, as they will be facing state rivals Washington State in the 107th meeting for the trophy. Washington currently holds the Cup, and has a winning record of 68-32-6.

Thanks, and stay tuned because I got some more things coming up on the graphical side of things

And yeah, Tommy is putting up serious numbers, he's getting his college career well under way I'd say, but like I said in an earlier post, we'll know more next season when most of the O-Line will be gone...
