While Swift will likely be the centerpiece of the recruiting class, folks like Tyson could definitely outshine him. Here's Tyson's scouting report, and it's damn impressive. He's so good already in so many different areas.. if he commits, I see an early Jeff McNeal style of play in his future, where he plays on offense, defense and special teams. We'll work within his athletic limitations, but if we can get him I think he'll be a very good player for us.

He'd be a damn good cornerback. Also some running back and wildcat QB? Could be an interesting recruit.

QB could be interesting.. we're getting a lot younger there when I-Jax graduates and Tyson could slot in as the #2 the day he walks on campus. Especially with Jordan Brown who can't run.. could be a real nice change of pace option.

I think you guys both got it right and as I look at it safety may be the ideal landing spot for him, though we're still very deep there and all of our top four safeties have at least two years of eligibility left (Vic Castalanetta, Tony Rush, Kion East and Aaron Brook). Corner would provide a better shot to play early, but I don't know if he has the speed to work with faster receivers right now.

I will point out, though, that our free safety Rush hasn't been all that fantastic this year. All season we have devoted highlights to him getting juked out and stiff armed, and that gets tiresome to watch. I still don't know what we have in East and Brook. That could leave the door open for Tyson, but we'll see.

Like I said, I think Tyson ends up like a Jeff McNeal sort of guy, who plays both ways early (maybe as the option QB and a nickel safety or something) and eventually (hopefully) a home for him will arise, be it in the secondary or at a skill position. It didn't work out quite like that for McNeal, but that's a different story.

Don't forget, of course, that Tyson still hasn't committed just yet. But I think we're close. Thanks guys!

            Other News and Notes

Because it's been over a week, I'll get you guys back up to speed on some stuff. Redshirt freshman linebacker Jevon Sapp is slated to make his first career start in place of the injured Scott Coffman. Sapp recorded seven tackles against Syracuse two weeks ago and has come on strong in practices of recent weeks.

Luke Williamson is over 1000 yards once again and will try to extend his career rushing record this weekend. Despite his recent hot hand, don't be surprised to see J.P. Byers get some more carries, especially in the weather conditions we'll be facing (see below).

UConn is hosting over a dozen prospects (see last page's recruiting updates), and with a prime chance to impress them considering the team we're facing, there is a strong chance that we will have more commits by week's end.

            UConn Flashback

UConn has faced UMass once in the eight seasons of this dynasty, a 28-10 UConn win back in 2016 when the teams met in Amherst. Josh Marriner ran for 185 yards while Bryant Shirreffs tossed two touchdown passes to lead the way. Relive the game here!

            Weather Forecast Calls for Snow

What should already be a fun game for UConn will be even more fun when they see the weather outside on Saturday morning. The Weather Channel and other local forecasting services have called for a 100% chance of some white to fall around the Storrs/Hartford area during Saturday's rivalry game. While snow this time of year is typically unusual, remember that it is of course New England, and anything is possible when it comes to wet stuff.

Rentschler Field should have a layer of white by gametime and flurries should continue throughout the day, while the high temperature is estimated to be 25 degrees in what should be a cold, messy game.

Yeah I'm still here hahaha.. I'm going to total it up when I'm all done but by Monday's end I will have written somewhere around ~9,000 words and 30 pages (double spaced of course) spread out over four final papers in the last two weeks... Needless to say I am definitely not ready to write up a game recap just yet.

I'm looking forward to getting back to a regular pace real soon. I've had the UMass and NC State games in the can for about a month now and I'm excited to play the last (between 3-5) games left in the season soon, especially considering we're still in the ACC race right now.

Appreciate you all hanging in there!

Wow, I fell behind... But, I'm all caught up now. Every game you play with UConn still makes me so giddy, whether you win by 30 or lose by 30. As much as I loved Miami (OH), I'm glad I went to UConn because I've found that I just couldn't live without UConn sports. Sitting in the front row for all football, and men's and women's basketball games, I feel like all the little kids are watching me, wishing they could me, just as I did when I was their age. And, academically, I just wrapped up my first semester, and have already made the bonds I know will last a lifetime. Up until this week, as a matter of fact, I still had dreams about life at Miami, but seeing this, and realizing how UConn is the culmination of all my dreams coming true, I can't help but be happy with my decision.

But, anyway, back to more pertinent matters... At all the Rent games this year, I took pictures, so if you ever want to incorporate a view from the student section (or update the image in your game previews), just let me know. I got everything. Sunset, mid-afternoon, 90 degrees, 40 degrees, prime time, even cheerleaders...

Happy to see you're all in order for the stretch run, RT! I just handed in my last assignment, so homeward bound later today and I'll get ready to finish the season soon! The last four games of the regular season should be interesting matchups (including a CAC game vs. Louisville and OC Woodard in the season finale); surely there are a lot of twists and turns still to come.

It's fascinating to me how this has been going on for three years now; Despite the breaks I've taken, I do still enjoy playing with UConn too, no matter the outcome, and of course we've talked about me watching some real UConn games as the years have gone by. It's going to be very weird watching the Huskies next year with none of the guys who originally comprised my roster back in 2014, but on we go!

I'm really happy to see that school has gone well for you so far. I think because it's the school you grew up with and the area you grew up with, it's harder to leave behind. It was easier for me to pack up and come to a new state in part because there was no hometown school with memories and connections trying to lure me back in. There are plenty of other factors too, but that's a story for another day.

As for the pictures, yes absolutely feel free to send me anything. I'm always on the lookout for fun generic UConn pics and what you send could be of use for my schedule and game preview graphics, as well as for any miscellaneous UConn news posts in the offseason. Thank you very much in advance!

                        (7) 58 --- 7-2 (5-1)

                        Snow Problem!

UConn shakes off pesky Minutemen, hangs 58 in snow bowl; Byers, Williamson combine for 350 rush yards, five TD while Gardner leads defense with four sacks

The running backs had a tremendous day; Luke Williamson topped 200 yards for the second straight game, while J.P. Byers ran for three scores and 147 yards of his own.

For the third time this season, UConn football has asserted their will against the northeast.

With an early November snowstorm raging amongst a rowdy sellout Property/Rent crowd, seventh-ranked UConn handled UMass, as expected, without too much difficulty in a 58-21 decision.

The score may be indicative, and the results could show the blowout on paper. In a way, that is right as UConn was never in eminent danger of losing. Led by backup sophomore quarterback Deantwan Lake and star tailback Bray Anderson, however, the Minutemen certainly kept things interesting for a while.

On UConn’s very first offensive possession, safety Phillip DeNico picked off Isaac Jackson as he took a shot downfield. That abrupt drive ender kept UConn to led to just three points in the first quarter, coming on the right leg of freshman Anthony Ricciardi.

On the strength of a touchdown pass from Jackson to Chamarkelle Byrom and an impressive 18 yard scamper from J.P. Byers, UConn would extend the lead to 17-0 partway through the second quarter before Anderson countered with UMass’ first touchdown; a run from a yard out. The short dive play capped off an impressive eleven-play, 75 yard drive to pull within ten points.

UConn would again score two more touchdowns, on both ends of the halftime break, this time touchdown runs from Jackson and Byers for the second time to take a seemingly commanding 30-7 lead early in the third quarter.

Once again, however, UMass would stick around. On the ensuing kickoff, Pierre Parker fielded the boot from Ricciardi two yards in the end zone and took off. With good blocking to the left side, Parker beat everyone down the sideline and a few seconds later celebrated in the end zone. Parker was one of the stars of the day with a total of 214 return yards, but the more important part was that with a successful two point conversion moments later, UMass had cut the lead to two scores at 30-15.

(LEFT) Bray Anderson violently shoves away Mike Hill. (RIGHT) Pierre Parker trots into the end zone after a 102-yard kick return.

From there, however, it was all UConn. The Huskies put away the pesky Minutemen by scoring the game’s last four touchdowns on the strength of two Luke Williamson touchdown runs, a third run from Byers and a fumble return touchdown from Kent Newton with the backups in the game, capping off a 28 point swing to bloat the final score to 58 Husky points.

While certainly not the dominating start to finish game UConn may have wanted, UConn did play a good game overall and there are certainly lots of positive takeaways from today’s game.

The Husky offense racked up 644 yards of offense, a whopping 376 of those coming on the ground at the expense of a shorthanded UMass defensive front. Williamson ran for 200+ yards for the second straight game, today rolling up 208 and two touchdowns on 35 carries while Byers broke off the aforementioned trio of touchdown runs en route to 147 yards on just 16 carries (a 9.1 average!)

Coach Belichick said to media after the game that he wanted to get Byers additional carries and give Williamson rests with the run game in large focus due to the Minutemen injury report and the weather conditions. Needless to say, he was pleased with the results and happy that he didn’t have to force Isaac Jackson to make plays in the harsh weather. Jackson threw for a pedestrian 226 yards and one touchdown compared to two interceptions, one to DeNico in the first and the other to Randall Shaw later in the contest. Freshman Lonte’ Speier led UConn receivers with five grabs and 119 yards.

UMass had some defensive highlights; Phillip DeNico (LEFT) and Randall Shaw (RIGHT) took away possible points from Isaac Jackson.

On defense, UConn did give up over 300 yards of total offense to backup UMass QB Lake (205 yards passing with no scores and a pick) and the senior tailback Anderson (109 yards rushing). However, the 300 yards go unseen compared to the more important stat: Just seven points allowed for Josh Conklin’s unit.

Leading the charge for the Husky D was senior defensive end Altarri Gardner, who recorded an impressive four sacks of UMass slinger Lake on the afternoon. Gardner, who led the nation in sacks a year ago, has already bested his total from last year as he sits on 16 sacks through just nine games; he appears poised for his second straight sack crown. Gardner also moves into second on UConn’s all-time sack list and is five away from breaking the school’s single season sacks record.

The other top defensive player on the day was redshirt freshman linebacker Jevon Sapp. The North Carolina native, making his first career start in place of injured Scott Coffman, recorded a team-high six tackles (two for loss) and a sack to continue his recent hot streak.

Elsewhere, Newton and J.D. Rudie played well in garbage time for the secondary, while backup linebacker Alex Brown recorded his first career interception and forced the fumble returned by Newton.

“We got good play today out of a lot of different guys”, commented Belichick.

UConn got some strong play from a number of sources. (LEFT) Jevon Sapp sacks Deantwan Lake, (CENTER) Altarri Gardner tied a career high with four sacks. (RIGHT) Kent Newton scooped up a fumble and ran it back for UConn’s final seven points of the afternoon; another impact player not shown is Alex Brown, with the forced fumble and an INT.

The Minutemen, coached by former UConn DC Hank Hughes, will fall out of bowl contention for the tenth consecutive year at 2-7, but can take solace in knowing that his team played a top-ten team competitively, and was proud of his team’s effort. Much like former UConn employee and BC coach Mike Cummings earlier this year, Hughes spoke positively about the UConn program, the stadium and was pleased to come down for a game.

“I’m honored to bring our guys down here and compete against a class act university; I greatly enjoyed my time working at UConn and to come back is incredible. I can’t wait for Coach Belichick to bring his guys over to Amherst in two years.”

UConn, with the win, moves to 7-2 and remains in the thick of the playoff race with three regular season games to go. They’ll remain at home next week and take on Bo Pelini’s NC State Wolfpack, who are also still in contention in the ACC race.

Chamarkelle Byrom had a touchdown grab for UConn.

To be expected, though... it is UMass, but I feel that the offense has really stepped up lately, especially the run game.
