Miami-Ohio has clinched the MAC East for the second straight year.

With their win, Central could have theoretically clinched the MAC West this week for the first time in OC Crenshaw's six year tenure. However, Buddy Green's Toledo Rockets (reigning conference champs) took care of business, eking out a 24-17 win over UMass to just barely keep them alive.

With the last week of the regular season, looming, the scenarios are very simple: Central wins and gets in, or gets in if Toledo loses. If Toledo wins and Central loses, Toledo gets the West division's berth in the conference title game via head-to-head tiebreaker.

Senior linebacker Cox to miss senior day with pectoral injury

UConn football has received some heartbreaking news as senior linebacker John Cox has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Louisville - his senior day. Cox left last Saturday’s contest against Wake Forest in the second half with what was later revealed as a pectoral strain and did not return.

After being limited in practice with no participation in scrimmage, the training staff did not clear Cox to play against Louisville, noting that he needs about two weeks to rest. UConn is off next week and Cox should be good to go if UConn makes it to the ACC Championship Game.

Cox, a former lightly regarded three star recruit from Vineland, New Jersey, has been the heart and soul of the defense in recent seasons from his right outside linebacker spot. He exploded onto the scene in his first year starting as a redshirt sophomore in 2019, racking up 90 tackles (30 for loss) with five sacks, an interception and a touchdown while taking home most of the national defensive awards up for grabs. Cox was quietly stellar again in 2020 with 96 tackles (20 for loss), along with four sacks and three interceptions. His numbers have dipped significantly as a senior, but he still has 58 tackles (22 for loss) along with four sacks and an interception. Cox sits six TFL's away from breaking former defensive end Sam Rourke's school record.

UConn’s linebacking core has undergone drastic changes in the past few weeks, with Week 1 starter Scott Coffman missing four weeks to injury and later losing his job on the left side to redshirt freshman Jevon Sapp. Several other backups including Alex Brown and A.J. Paxston have seen significant snaps this season as well.

Paxston, a redshirt junior from Bowling Green, Ohio, will get his first career start in Cox’s place this week.

Bear in mind that Miami was actually upset in last year's MAC Title Game at the hands of Toledo.

I appreciate the comments on the graphics, especially because I'm not a professional graphics guy or anything like that... I actually do them a little differently than most. I do use "photoshop" (one of those free alternative sites) a little, but I do a lot of my work through google slides; by and large, everything comes out looking pretty good most of the time!

As for the game(s), we can't lie down against Louisville - they're 5-6 and have one last shot to get to a bowl game, so I expect them to come out swinging because they have nothing to lose.

Looking ahead though, while we are in the driver seat, it is still possible for us to not get to the ACC Title Game if we lose. Georgia Tech I believe has locked up one of the spots in the title game, as they have a head to head tiebreaker over everyone except NC State (who they did not play) and have wrapped up their conference slate - they play Georgia in the final week. So if we win we'll take on GT in two weeks. I'll be frank when I say that GT scares me. I've always had troubles with the option and Tech was a playoff team last year, which means they won't be overwhelmed by the spotlight and stakes.

The path to the playoff for us is very simple, though - win and we'll get in! May be easier said than done, though.

We'll talk more about the specifics of the playoff picture after the regular season wraps up, but I will say this: The ACC champ is absolutely going to get in the playoff, as well as the Pac-12 champ (and possibly two from the Pac-12 if undefeated Oregon loses to USC; that matchup is already set). After that, it could be really clear or really vague! It all depends on how Champ Week plays out.

UConn fends off challenge from Cardinals, hang another 50 burger as Huskies clinch top seed for ACC Title Game; Huskies rack up 355 rushing yards and five touchdowns as Williamson breaks career rushing TD record

For the seventh year in a row, senior day was festive in East Hartford. That’s because, for the seventh straight year, UConn won on senior day.

During halftime, UConn honored their 13 seniors to thunderous applause, from former walk-ons cornerback J.D. Rudie and wideout Johnny Williams to career backup offensive guard Brian Link and hero quarterback Isaac Jackson. The loudest cheers, however, came for injured linebacker John Cox, the three year starter and defensive captain held out of today’s game with injury.

Indeed, there was no shortage of energy in The Property on this Thanksgiving weekend despite another blustering snowstorm as UConn continued to click on all cylinders in the latter stages of the 2021 season.

Thanks to Luke Williamson, who broke UConn's career rushing touchdown mark in his likely final home game, and another explosive offensive effort of more than 600 yards in total, the fifth-ranked Huskies notched a closer-than-hoped for 52-38 victory over Louisville and CAC offensive coordinator Brian Woodard to close out the regular season. With the win, UConn ups their win streak to seven and also locks up a spot in the ACC Title Game; they’ll play Georgia Tech next week with a College Football Playoff spot hanging in the balance.

UConn had no problems with offense; they scored 21 in the opening frame to jump out to a quick lead, and never looked back. “Ice-Jax” opened up the scoring with a 39 yard touchdown pass to Chamarkelle Byrom, followed by touchdown runs from J.P. Byers and Williamson while LeCarl Brandis struggled to feel out his Cardinal offense early. UConn’s run game was fantastic once again, as those were the first of five total touchdowns on the ground. For the fourth game in a row, both Byers and Williamson topped 100 yards rushing.

Early in the second quarter, it appeared as if UConn was about to pounce and put the game away early. Shav Wade intercepted Brandis early in the second quarter (#23 for his career) and ran the pick back almost all the way, setting UConn up inside the red zone.

However, the very first play of that ensuing UConn drive ended with a sack of Ice-Jax courtesy of freshman sensation Justin Osbjornson, who forced the fumble on the play as well. Louisville’s Skyler Pittman recovered, and a few plays later LeCarl Brandis fired a touchdown to tight end Leon Jones. Following an Anthony Riccciardi field goal, Louisville ended the half on a high note with a 75 yard touchdown from Brandis to Dustin Harris, who ran untouched into the end zone on busted coverage. Louisville had closed the gap to 24-21 at halftime to keep UConn honest.

Justin Osbjornson (#8, LEFT) forced a sack and fumble that would keep Louisville in the game for a while.

UConn was able to respond out of the halftime break and pulled away, though. The Huskies drove the length of the field right out of the break before Williamson punched in his second touchdown of the afternoon, the record-breaking 56th of his career. Jackson followed up with his second touchdown pass two minutes later, a six yard connection to H-Back Ja’Montres Jones, another senior contributor, to extend UConn’s lead to 38-21 and give the Huskies all the momentum they needed to cruise to the finish.

Williamson would add a third touchdown in the final quarter, while sophomore Mike Molden rumbled in for his first career rushing touchdown as well. The final rushing stats for UConn were 66 carries for 355 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and 5 touchdowns, a most impressive ending to a sensational second half of the season. Byers led with 183 yards and a score while Williamson added 160 on 30 carries with his three scores, shattering the last major career record Williamson had yet to conquer in a Husky uniform. He now has 57 career rushing touchdowns, two more than the great Josh Marriner.

"It's a great honor, to do everything I've done", stated Williamson, a Nautilus Park, Connecticut native. "I grew up watching college football in the east and went through a lot of ups and downs with my hometown Huskies.. all of the stats are cool but there's still one more job to be done and that's to put a second championship banner in front of that scoreboard."

Jackson pitched a near perfect game as well, throwing 17 of 18 for 284 yards and two scores. Senior tight end Ryne Thomas was the top receiver with a season high seven catches and 101 yards.

Louisville, to their credit, played a good game and had a lot of success against the shorthanded UConn defense, who is still breaking in some new starters. Brandis was a fantastic 39 of 52 for 448 yards and three touchdowns. Leon Jones was the leading receiver with 11 catches for 87 yards and two touchdowns while Harris added seven catches for 152 and Shawn Edwards had eight grabs of his own.

“Give them full credit”, commented Belichick when told that UConn was unable to rack up a single sack and surrendered a season-high 515 yards. “Their offensive coordinator [Woodard, the CAC alum] helped call a really good game and we couldn’t adjust well enough. We’re lucky we had the offense clicking again and have a lot of work to do looking forward to Georgia Tech.”

Louisville finishes the season 5-7, just shy of their second straight bowl game since hiring Woodard and head coach Dave Steckel in December 2019. “Yeah we’re disappointed”, noted Woodard. “But we know UConn is good, and there’s no shame in the effort we put forth. We’ll come back stronger next year.”

As for UConn, there is still a lot of effort to come. UConn sets their sights on a clash of the titans against Georgia Tech for conference supremacy with a playoff spot hanging in the balance. Don’t go anywhere!

#3 Georgia Tech (10-2) vs. #5 UConn (10-2)
Playoff Watch

The ACC plucked away UConn and Notre Dame to have more success in the playoff, and they are getting their wish. The conference will get one team in, the winner of this game. Tech and UConn have similar strengths - potent rushing attacks and gritty defenses who are strong up front and weaker in back. The Wrecks are led by star linebackers Todd Peterson and CeeCee Jennings, a likely All-American who will try everything to stop Husky backs Luke Williamson and J.P. Byers. Meanwhile, the nation’s top rush defense will try and stop the electric tailback Tavin Stocker, Steven Everett and intelligent quarterback Patrick Cabral. The game may very well come down to how Tech can handle UConn’s top ten pass offense.

With the same stakes on the line, expect a hard fought game that won’t be decided until the final whistle.

#17 UCF (9-3) vs. #25 Navy (9-3)

The American Title Game is the one of the more intriguing Group of 5 games on championship Saturday as the Knights of UCF and the Middies of Navy will vie for a berth in the Peach Bowl. Supplanting Temple from the top spot in the conference a month ago, UCF looks to be the favorite behind star junior quarterback and future NFL player Aaron Houston and their plethora of weapons at the skill positions. Navy still has their option attack and star quarterback of their own in Jabari Woods, who will look to try and keep the Knights honest. If they can’t, it could be a long day for the Middies.

#7 Oklahoma (9-3) vs. #19 Arkansas State (9-3)
Playoff Watch

Few likely expected Arkansas State to challenge perennial powers such as Oklahoma and Texas in their first year as conference members, but even so, the Red Wolves walk into Jerruh World looking for their fourth consecutive league title, this time in a new conference. Doug Meacham is building a rising powerhouse in Jonesboro, and will look for one more good game out of veteran starting quarterback Bryan Harris. Boreese Cave will look to carve up the Sooner defense from his running back spot.

Arkansas State faces a greater challenge in stopping Oklahoma’s explosive duo of tailback Elston Alpanaria and quarterback Justyce Tryson, who has proven to be one of the best slingers in the nation and is currently leading the nation in passing yards. The Red Wolves have an All-American defensive end in Duran Charoman who will need to apply pressure to keep the Sooner offense off the field.

The Sooners need a win to stay in the playoff hunt if something wild happens, and I’d expect them to play motivated en route to their first Big 12 title in five years.

#8 Nebraska (11-1) vs. #9 Ohio State (9-3) Playoff Watch

The Big 10 title game may have the most impact on the playoff race than any other. A Nebraska victory makes selecting a top four much easier - the Huskers only have one loss and have played like a national title contender all year long, with the exception of one slip up at the hands of Illinois midseason. Nebraska has returned much of the core from a playoff team from last season, including quarterback Isaac Zazzarion, who has stayed healthy and played well. Tailback KaJohntay Stewart has forged into the Heisman race late and looks to make one last surge.

Ohio State, on the other hand, could crash everyone’s party. The Bucks are arguably the nation’s hottest team, having won six straight and are coming off a throttling of hated Michigan over rivalry week. Tailback Ryan Herring has been sensational in those six games and is threatening to cross the 2,000 yard mark on the season. While the Bucks, national champs two years ago, are longshots to make the playoff, that certainly doesn’t mean they can’t impact it, and will throw the committee into a feeding frenzy if they win.

North Texas (8-4) vs. Old Dominion (8-4)

The reigning conference champs return in the form of Old Dominion. Despite sporting a different head coach (Tim Hauck) and quarterback (Isaac Holland) as they did last year, the Monarchs still sport a top 20 offense in the nation and have knocked off other strong teams in-conference, including Texas State and Southern Miss.They also smoked the Mean Green when they met in October. North Texas locked up their division by trouncing Southern Miss in a de facto play-in game - but we’ll see if quarterback Brennan White and NFL wideout prospect Eli Harris can trade blows with the mighty Monarchs.

Toledo (7-5) vs. #24 Miami-Ohio (10-2)

The MAC title sees a rematch from last year, a Toledo victory that spoiled any chance Miami had at the New Year’s Six. While no big time bowl games lie in the horizon, Miami is still playing for revenge. Led by coach Ted Roof and his Georgia Tech option attack, quarterback Nate Medlock is seasoned and primed for his big chance, while tailback Drew Britt picked up right where Jesse Scales left off last year - Britt will pass 2000 yards on the season.

Toledo just snuck into the title game in the last week with a desperation win and a Central Michigan loss - getting the nod via tiebreaker. The Rockets have pulled upsets in the last two MAC title games and are certainly no strangers to the spotlight. They will look to take the MAC for the third straight year behind the arm of QB Juan Waters and a good defense.

Fresno State (8-4) vs. Colorado State (6-6)

In a bit of a down year in the Mountain West, the Rams and their rag-tag bunch slide in at 6-6, while Fresno enters a little less talented than they were a year ago, when they went 12-2 and nearly made it to the New Year’s Six. Even so, Bulldog quarterback Loren Talgett and a talented wideout group will look to bring home a second straight conference title to Fresno.

#1 Oregon (12-0) vs. #2 USC (10-2) Playoff Watch

The game of the week, the game of the year and the “Game of the Century” perhaps culminate in Santa Clara for the Pac-12 Title Game. The game may mean a little less, however, considering that Oregon is already, in all likelihood, locked into the playoff for the fourth time with their undefeated record. If they lose, their one loss would be much better than most teams’ two or three losses. Nevertheless, Oregon needs to stay focused for the greater end goal and a win gives them the team to beat status going into the playoff. Though star quarterback Nelly DeWeaver has struggled to accept his “lesser” recognition this season, all he wants is to cement his status as one of the best to play QB at the college level. Possible Heisman winner Chris McGill has an interesting matchup with rising star Travarrius McPope on the USC defensive front.

USC has much more to play for, than Oregon, however. It’s win and in for coach Quinn Shea’s Trojans, seeking their third playoff appearance in four seasons. Grad transfer quarterback Tanner Dean-Lowry has been banged up the past few weeks, but is ready to go in perhaps the biggest game of his career. He’s been instrumental in SC’s success. Look out for Baron Baggarly as well. The sophomore and former five-star prospect was sensational against UCLA a few weeks ago with 234 yards and four touchdowns. All-American safety Shen Oliver will look to shut down DeWeaver and the Oregon passing attack. Look for USC to come out hungry and give Oregon everything they’ve got.

LSU (8-4) vs. #23 Florida (8-4)

In another down year, the SEC will not land a playoff team for the second straight year. However, that does not mean an intriguing matchup won’t take place. Led by QB Ashton Wade and tailback Chad Gilliam, LSU has racked up three straight wins to close the season, while Florida has been one of the top two teams in the conference. The Gators have a dynamic backfield with junior Cetran Copeland, senior Sam Crooks and quarterback Chase Browne.
While no playoff is in sight, the Sugar Bowl certainly is, so a good game should be in store, but I’d look out for Florida to take this without issue.

Guru's Playoff Musings:

- Essentially, if USC and Nebraska win, we have no debate over the playoff field as we'll get the ACC Champ, Nebraska as the Big 10 champ, USC as the Pac-12 Champ and Oregon as a wildcard with a 12-1 record. That's the ideal scenario.

- The Big 10 champ may control their own destiny - Nebraska is win and in and if Ohio State wins, their resume would likely be more impressive than Oklahoma, Cal and North Carolina, though the Buckeyes would be far from a lock with their three losses.

- An Oregon win knocks USC out of the picture completely and would open up at least one spot for a two-loss team who didn't play in their conference title game (Cal or North Carolina) or a three-loss conference champ in Oklahoma.

- For Cal or UNC to have a shot, they'll be pulling for Oregon, Ohio State and Arkansas State to beat Oklahoma. Oklahoma also needs an Oregon win to have a real shot.

The playoff has changed everything with my dynasty experience. Though the mod did expose my stupidity and almost ruined this file two years ago.

Color me surprised that we even have a shot this year - we started the season 3-2 and not looking anything resembling a playoff team. Our guys have really picked it up over the last seven/eight weeks and we've been firing on all cylinders; hopefully we can keep it up for a few more games!

Tech is going to be very tough - our strengths are theirs and vise versa. I can take solace in knowing that despite our two losses, if we win and make the playoff we'll have earned it against the next best team from our conference; or if we lose, we lost to the best team.

I've documented sporadically over the years that I hate trying to defend the option.. in the early seasons we played Navy and Army as members of the American Conference and we got shelled consistently. I'm getting better but Tech is the best option team I've faced yet. Stocker is an electric playmaker (All-American return man last year), while Cabral and Everett are solid as well. They've got some interesting pieces on defense as well. We'll have to attack their weaker secondary to pull this out.

I greatly appreciate you dropping in Geezy. Feel you on reading everything as well... I want to read everything but that's easier said than done because of school and such. I wasn't totally sure how things would go upon restarting this in July having been away from 'chising and gaming altogether for almost 18 months but Part II of UConn football has been a flying success so far. As long as the file continues to function I want to play, so hopefully this can keep going for many more years to come!

Ice In His Veins

Ice-Jax leads UConn on game-winning touchdown drive, guides Huskies to ACC Title and clinch return to College Football Playoff in an instant classic

Everyone, Isaac “Ice” Jackson.

The senior quarterback from Georgia has seen everything in five years. You could start with the three different conferences UConn has been apart of since he enrolled in August 2017. He was lightly regarded as a recruit in 2017, well behind guy of the future David Hamilton. He toiled behind Jarrett Rivero and Tanner Dean-Lowry for years, good enough to play in spurts but never consistent enough to be a starter. He was fourth, third, second, and first, and second, and first again on the depth chart at various points in his career. Now, in December 2021, there is no doubt that Isaac Jackson is the man. He’s wrapping up one of the greatest careers a UConn gunslinger has ever known.

Recognized in years past for his penchant for success in late-game situations, Jackson dipped into his bag of tricks one more time on Saturday night as his time in UConn’s jersey #9 draws near an end. Returning to school for his fifth year with a national title as the end goal, Jackson ensured UConn will continue on in that quest for banner #2.

The Huskies have been one of the hottest teams in the nation for the better part of two months, but got everything they could handle from the Yellow Jackets of Georgia Tech in their first foray in the ACC Title Game. For a while, it looked as if UConn had finally met their match and were about to come crashing back to earth. In the end, it was Jackson and UConn who got the last laugh, with Luke Williamson scoring the winning touchdown with just a handful of ticks left to play.

Though the score wouldn’t always show it, Tech felt in control for most of the game. Opening the game with the ball, Tech picked up 10-plus yards on runs from QB Patrick Cabral, fullback Cam Wheeler and to the air through wideout Mark McNamara before the nine-play drive fizzled out with a Sam Barnett pass breakup. Freshman Justin Atkinson netted the game’s first three points, connecting on a 37 yard field goal.

Following three and outs from both sides on their next drives, UConn would take the lead at the end of the first quarter. Working with a short field (the punt was brought back by new return man J.D. Rudie to the UConn 44), Ice-Jax needed seven plays to march down the field and take the lead, connecting with super-freshman wideout Lonte’ Speier for the score and a 7-3 lead. Speier had two catches on the drive for 35 yards, which put him over 1,000 for the season. Later in the game, his classmate Chamarkelle Byrom would also surpass 1,000 yards on the year, a tremendous accomplishment for both young men who will be stars for years to come.

Lonte’ Speier (along with classmate Chamarkelle Byrom) passed 1,000 yards receiving, the first time two true freshmen have done the feat in UConn history.

While UConn had the advantage on the scoreboard after a quarter, the second quarter would be dominated by Tech. Without a lot of high-end talent and athleticism, the Yellow Jackets wanted to make the game a slugfest. Tech’s front seven stifled UConn’s suddenly potent run game all evening, specifically senior nose tackle Michael Gooden and linebackers Todd Freeman and CeeCee Jennings, who were seemingly in on every play and taking full advantage of UConn’s weaker offensive line. While both Williamson and J.P. Byers had crossed 100 yards in each of the last four games, neither managed to come close - Tech only allowed 64 rush yards in total.

To make matters worse for UConn, the Huskies struggled to adjust back to the pass-first offense they had utilized early in the season. Jackson was sacked three times in the quarter and UConn only picked up one first down in roughly ten minutes of play. Atkinson added a pair of field goals for the Yellow Jackets, giving Tech a 9-7 halftime lead.

Ice-Jax struggled early as Tech’s defensive front got the best of UConn’s offensive line all night.

Another important development for both sides in the first half came via injuries to key players. UConn lost star defensive end Altarri Gardner, the nation’s sack leader, for the game with an arm injury late in the first quarter (he didn’t return, we’ll learn more about his status tomorrow). A little later on, Yellow Jackets quarterback Cabral left the game following a sack, ironically, by Brett Lowery, Gardner’s replacement. Cabral was taken to the blue tent on the sidelines and was ruled out with a mild concussion - also not to return. Though Tech had a halftime lead, their playoff hopes would hinge on true freshman QB Fabian Stadler.

Out of the halftime break, UConn continued to look sloppy offensively. J.D. Rudie brought the half’s opening kick on to the good side of the 50, leaving Ice-Jax with a short field to try and retake the lead. Instead, on the very first play of the drive, UConn’s efforts to get cute by running option of their own backfired miserably. Looking to pitch to Williamson, Jackson’s toss went straight into the hands of Tech’s All-American Jennings, who ran the “fumble” back for a score and extended Tech’s lead to 16-7.

All-American linebacker CeeCee Jennings intercepted the option pitch from Ice-Jax and ran it back for the touchdown, giving Tech a two-score lead early in the second half.

UConn’s defense suddenly looked amped up after the fumble six on the other side and played angry after that. Redshirt freshman Jevon Sapp continued his recent big-play ways by recording a sack and another stop behind the line that ended Tech’s next drive. UConn was able to chip into the deficit with their first good run of the day soon thereafter, with Williamson busting a 16-yard touchdown through a great hole created by freshman guard Korey Davis-Love, sophomore tackle Michael Clark and tight end Ryne Thomas.

UConn’s defense did one better right after and forced a takeaway - Thomas Willis completely destroyed a Stadler run in the backfield and Mike Hill scooped up the loose ball to immediately put UConn in the red zone. After a completion to Speier, Ice-Jax snuck in a one-yard touchdown run to give the Huskies the lead. After Jackson connected with Thomas for the 2-point conversion, UConn now had a 22-16 lead after three quarters of play.

Anthony Ricciardi opened the fourth quarter for scoring with a short field goal, giving UConn a two score lead. Once again, though, the Yellow Jackets found a way to claw back into the game.

Tech sliced up the Husky D for a touchdown drive, capped with a 12-yard Stadler run, and the Jackets forced UConn to punt after. Tech was able to take the lead with 2:20 on the clock after freshman wideout William Mannix broke away from free safety Tony Rush and scooted to the end zone. Wheeler dove in for the two-point try and Tech had assumed a 31-25 lead.

Shortly after UConn took the lead back, William Mannix (LEFT) and Fabian Stadler (RIGHT) helped Tech take control once again late in the going.

Time for a two minute drill. Time to unleash the man with ice in his veins. Starting at his own 19, Jackson first hit J.P. Byers out of the backfield for a first down catch and run. Following a drop from Speier, Jackson then hit Ja’Montres Jones on a sluggo route for a gain of 15, and then Byrom on a deep out for another first down to pass midfield. Thomas caught the next pass for nine, and Byers cleaned up for the first down.

After two straight passes to slot man Devin Brown, UConn suddenly sat ten yards away from the tying score and go-ahead extra point. Jackson scrambled for seven of those ten, and Williamson finished for the tying touchdown, a simple dive route to UConn’s best running back of all-time. A fool-proof plan to score. Ricciardi put up the go-ahead extra point, meaning UConn had improbably taken the lead back with just 36 seconds remaining.

Inexplicably, Tech seemed in no big hurry when they got the ball back, and gave themselves only one shot at the end zone from 70 yards away despite having all of their timeouts and the clock running. Stadler’s pass was a short screen attempt, broken up by a host of UConn defenders, and UConn had a one point advantage when the clock struck zeroes.

Ice-Jax, when approached by NBC reporter Kathryn Tappen on-field after the game, was speechless. “I don’t know how we do this. Every time we get into trouble, we find our way out. We did it a lot with Coach Diaco, and we’ve still got it. Someone’s looking out for us up there, I guess.” Jackson was brilliant in clutch time, once again, and was rewarded when we consider that UConn had only 64 rushing yards in the entire game. Ice-Jax completed 82% of his passes (23-28) for 269 yards and a score, while moving the ball effectively when it was needed the most.

“Kid’s pretty good”, first-year head coach Stephen Belichick commented after raising UConn's second consecutive conference championship trophy (winning last year's Big 12 title).

After a 3-2 start to the 2021 season in which UConn looked but a shell of the team who made it to the playoff a year ago, the Huskies somehow, improbably, reeled off eight straight wins and now sit as ACC Champs who are headed back to the playoff. Despite a rather sloppy game in which UConn was outgained for the first time in two months, it was the senior leadership that allowed the marvelous turnaround to happen and the playoff appearance to come to fruition. Aided by a little bit of ice in their veins.

UConn wins a conference for the second consecutive year, this time in their first year as ACC members.

Oregon’s McGill wins Heisman

While his teammate Nelly DeWeaver was the favorite entering the season, it was tailback Chris McGill who was awarded the 2021 Heisman Memorial Trophy on Saturday night, representing the University of Oregon. McGill won handily, garnering more than 554 first-place votes and 1,000 points more than runner-up Heath Riley from Army and third-place KaJohntay Stewart from Nebraska. McGill’s triumph marks the first Heisman win for Oregon.

A returning starter from last year’s national title team, McGill was integral to the success of the reigning national champions this fall, rushing for 1,624 yards and a school record 24 touchdowns on 220 carries while adding 30 catches for 468 yards and seven more scores.

McGill becomes the third straight running back to take home College Football’s most prestigious award, following USC’s Lamar Holycross in 2019 and Nebraska’s Andy Merriman last year. McGill will lead his Ducks into the College Football Playoff, despite losing the Pac-12 Championship Game to USC.

Rounding out the top five in this year’s voting were Air Force tailback Winfield Nash, a 2,000 yard runner who likely would have won had he not missed the Falcons’ final two games with injury. NC State’s Nate Marshall finished fifth.

Rounding out the top ten were Cal QB Derek Culton, Ole Miss QB Devon McCullough, Wisconsin running back Rocco Zescore, USC QB Tanner Dean-Lowry and Nebraska QB Isaac Zazzarion.

Gardner takes home Nagurski, repeats as Lombardi winner; Belichick named Coach of the Year

UConn’s senior defensive end Altarri Gardner has once again made his mark in terms of national awards. The senior, who is on pace to lead the NCAA in sacks for the second consecutive year, took home the Bronko Nagurski Award for the nation’s best defender and the Rotary Lombardi Award for interior linemen for the second straight year on Home Depot Awards Night.

Gardner, a second-year starter, once again shined for UConn’s defense this fall, asserting his presence as an impact player and one of the best pass rushers in school history by year’s end. He will almost certainly be picked in this spring's NFL Draft.

Gardner improved on his 13 sacks from a year ago, upping his total to 18 (third most in UConn history) and adding two forced fumbles. Gardner had three games this year recording three or more sacks. The senior, who will miss UConn’s playoff run with a broken wrist, will finish his career with 32 sacks, good for second in program history.

Gardner was the only major award winner for UConn players; Shav Wade was a finalist for the Thorpe Award, which he won last year, but was beat out by Texas State’s Freddie McPherson. Other finalists included Thomas Willis and John Cox, who both lost out on the Butkus Award to Virginia Tech's LaTroy Johnson. Freshman kicker Anthony Ricciardi placed fourth in the Groza Award voting; he only missed one field goal and one extra point in the regular season.

We emphasize players because UConn’s head coach Stephen Belichick was the other winner representing UConn. The 34-year old was named the Home Depot Coach of the Year, beating out former Bob Diaco protege Mike Denbrock of UCF and Mark Helfrich of Oregon. Belichick, who had never held a head coaching job prior to accepting the position at UConn, led his Huskies to an 11-2 record and a return to the College Football Playoff a year after seeing Diaco depart for the NFL after seven years.

Athletic director Bobby Valentine said he “couldn’t be prouder for Stephen and his accomplishments so far.”

The competition for best QB in the dynasty's history is not very strong.. for all of the great players to come through the dynasty so far, quarterback is the one position where we've been lacking. I think Ice-Jax has slowly made his way to the title of best QB in the first eight seasons.

His ability to step up in the big games and important situations is one of a kind, and because of it we're that much harder of an out in the playoff.
His story is a prime example showing that anything can happen in recruiting when someone is given the right situation to succeed!

Looking forward to hopefully getting the playoff bracket and bowl matchups out a little later - not as much drama with the release this time around because we know all four teams, but we get three returning teams from last year - meaning we will get at least one rematch from last year's playoff!
