Hate to see you lose out on two top corner prospects but if you weren't going to get them I love seeing them go to Texas. You still have an elite corner in Arnold, a FS in Sparks and not an athlete in Blalock that could fill a need at corner as well. The two offensive linemen are also huge additions. This looks like the class that will start to supplement what is already on the roster and then take over as the nucleus of a title contender!

Yeah that was a bit of a bummer. I really wanted to add some more speed to the position more than anything and Brantley and West would have fit the bill.

Arnold's 4.52 speed concerns me, but with our lack of recent success in recruiting that particular position, I certainly can't turn my nose up at landing the #2 cornerback in the nation.

Yes you can really tell what I felt our areas of focus should be based on this last group of signings. OL and DB were without question our two biggest needs and I think we've done a good job. We have a fairly young roster and this really supplements it well. I think we've put ourselves in position to really make another run at getting back to the top of the mountain, something that has surprisingly proven to be very elusive for us. I really hope both Arnold and Blalock (who I envision as a corner) can start day 1 for us.

Your Longhorns are off to a slow start this season, but that team is definitely built to last. They have a very impressive roster and it wouldn't surprise me if they made some national title noise here within the next season or two (they came VERY close last year, about as close as a team can possibly come).

Game 5, Year 16 Preview (2025 season): #5 Tulane Green Wave at #9 Florida Gators

            GAME 5 PREVIEW

            Courtesy

Latest Line (courtesy Bovada - Las Vegas):

            ....................Pick'em ....................

2024: RB Tony Tompkins' game-winning 3-yard touchdown run with 0:17 remaining capped off an 11-play drive that completed Tulane's fourth quarter comeback.

Last Meeting: Last season, then #16 ranked Tulane erased a 20-10 fourth quarter deficit, making big plays down the stretch to come away with a thrilling 24-20 victory over the then-#3 ranked defending national champion Florida Gators. RB Tony Tompkins finished off a big day by scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run with just 0:17 remaining, helping his team improve to 6-1 on the season. QB Obi Clemons, subbing in for an injured QB Bryce Allen, finished the game with a career-high 362 passing yards and a touchdown as the Wave avenged the previous season's SEC title game loss to the Gators.

2023: QB Joey Holmes along with his teammates and fans alike did the "Gator Chomp" all evening long during the course of winning their second straight Southeastern Conference title.

Last Meeting II: Two seasons ago, then-#2 ranked Florida dominated nearly from start to finish en route to knocking off then-#14 ranked Tulane 36-17 in the 2023 SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. Gators redshirt senior QB Joel Holmes threw for 343 yards and 2 touchdowns to help pace a Florida squad that would go on to win the BCS National Championship Game weeks later over Michigan at Tulane's Mercedes-Benz Superdome home venue. The Wave also had problems with Florida RB Marcus McBride that night as he finished the game with 192 yards from scrimmage. Tulane QB Obi Clemons, playing in place of injured starter Bryce Allen since mid-season, had an extremely poor outing and finished the night with no touchdowns and 4 interceptions in what was by far his worst performance of the year.

2020: After seeing WR Ryan Jean blow past Gators CB Eric Jones' jam attempt at the line of scrimmage, QB Jimmy Williams heaved a 34-yard touchdown pass to the sophomore stud that gave their team a 20-17 lead midway through the third quarter.

Last Meeting at Venue: Five seasons ago, after trailing 17-10 early in the third quarter, then-#5 Tulane reeled off 24 unanswered points on their way to a 34-17 victory over unranked Florida at "The Swamp." Former Green Wave QB Jimmy Williams threw for 302 yards and 4 touchdowns while his favorite target on the day, WR Ryan Jean, racked up 6 receptions for 125 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Wave improved their record to 9-1 on the year.

Can't say enough about the win over LSU. That was clutch and Grant Brady is looking like the next great Tulane wide receiver. I think one of the greatest strengths of the offense is the number of playmakers. It is just too much for defenses to have to watch for Tompkins, Lawson, Brady...etc etc

The recruits continue to roll in and you're really setting yourself up for multiple title runs here if this continues. I could not be more excited.

Looking ahead to Florida, they look solid as ever. And holy cow that freshman running back of theirs Kevin Austin looks to be something incredible. That guy has future superstar written all over him. Keeping their backs and wide receiver in front of you is going to be the key in this one I feel. Florida has a ton of speed on both sides of the ball so finding a way to get around that has to be paramount. Good luck my friend and a belated happy holidays! Wishing you all the best in the New Year!

Editor's Note: I didn't want to let the audience peak behind the curtain too much on this, but you asked so I need to explain, Editor's Note style.

Something that slowly happens in NCAA '11 over the course of time is that the ratings start to settle in at sort of a different curve than we're all used to seeing at the very start of dynasties or perhaps what's seen on earlier and later versions of NCAA.

Starting around Year 7 through 9 or so, the # of "A" teams starts to go down, and "B" teams become the new "A." You may find 2 or 3 super teams that are rated as an "A" team, but those are rare.

I actually have grown to really like the new curve more. I think the roster spreads around the nation more closely resemble real life now. There should not be very many teams with 90+ rated players across the board. Think about real life - pretty much every team except for maybe 2 or 3 has major weaknesses on its roster. I like that the good teams, including my own, pretty much all have flaws.

What I also like about it is that once you get out of the top 25 or so teams, B-/C+/C or "average" becomes the norm. Then, once you get past about the 60th or so ranked team, C-/D/D+ becomes the norm. Again, to me, this more closely reflects real life.

This prevents the absurd number of upsets from happening that we see on NCAA '14 and also prevents the plethora of bad/average teams from becoming urealistically good and seeing Sun Belt/MAC teams in the top 5 come seasons end every single year.

Below is how the teams stacked up at the beginning of this season, year 16 of the dynasty. Even though I do wish there were slightly fewer Power-5 teams down in the D+/D abyss, I really like the dynamic that this new curve has created and for me this dynasty feels as realistic as ever because of it.

I'll also add that there were about 2 or 3 years worth of subpar incoming recruiting classes right at about the start of this Part II project that contributed to this dynamic (only like 12 to 15 blue chip recruits in the recruiting pool per year), but things seem to be picking back up as my last couple of classes had close to 50 blue chip players available. So the ratings we see now are probably about as bad as we'll see it and things should start to fluctuate up again a little in the near future (I believe we'll see significantly more C's become B's as early as next season).

I just pretend that the talent level curve has gone down because of a brief generation of paranoid moms out there that didn't let their 8 to 12 year old sons play football due to the concussion research starting back at around the year 2016 or so.

                  Spoiler

Haha...yes we do have a lot of weapons; there's almsot TOO many mouths to feed on a weekly basis. I came into this season wanting to get the tight end more involved, but there is just too much awesome talent everywhere else to not get them the ball.

Florida's Kevin Austin scares me. He's only 5 foot 6 190 pounds, but I think we'll see him used all over the field - he's their #2 back as well as their #5 receiver and return guy. We'll have our work cut out trying to contain him, especially if they figure out a way to get him matched up one on one down field really against anyone on my defense.

Ironically, I think my old friend Deuce Monroe and the Alabama Crimson Tide provided the blue print to how to beat these guys last week. Expect a heavy dose of Tony Tompkins and our running game in this one to help keep that very good looking Florida offense off the field. I don't want to get into a shootout with this team, so running the ball and short passes (glad to have Michael Brown Jr. back) will be in order for this one.

Thanks fellas...now that my long essays are out of the way, time to get it on at the Swamp versus the Gators!

EDIT: Looks like it's going to be a wet one in Gainsville today!

Swamp is indeed very cool. Thanks for pulling back the curtain a bit. I like that the progression dynamic is different in 11. Makes even more sense that you use it. And I like that Bama is the only A. That's suitable. What's funniest is that, before I [consciously] read the mom storyline, that's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe my peripherals saw it.

Yeah man, The Swamp is one of my two favorite stadiums in this game, Florida's State's being my favorite. You're truly doing yourself a disservice if you haven't played at Doak Campbell or at Ben Hill Griffin yet.

I also added a ton of custom Florida band songs for my game against the Gators, and it really made the atmosphere all the more better.

Yes, it was concerning at first, but it seems like a natural ebb and flow. Like I said, we went through a period where the # of blue chips were down for a few seasons, but I think it is about to correct itself again here within the next year or so. We're now seeing 50+ blue chip players per year as oppose to 20 to 25 or so. It seems to have made things more competitve though, with this Florida game result that you'll see in a moment being just the latest example.

On another note, I thought this was a pretty cool side story worth sharing - In a direct parrallel to this dynasty report, the Saints did the Mannie Fresh thing at the Superdome at their playoff game this past weekend. This was kind of what I envisioned when I did my Mannie Fresh story during this past Tulane off-season. It's pretty damn awesome to see it happened in real life, and at the same stadium nonetheless. Who knows, maybe the guy in charge of the Saints' game day entertainment reads this dynasty:

Tulane redshirt freshman DT Byron Henderson celebrates following his game-clinching forced fumble with just 1:07 remaining to play.

Despite the elements, Tulanes get just enough clutch plays to escape in an epic 27-22 thriller at the rainy Swamp | RB Tompkins goes off for 150 yards and 3 touchdowns as his remarkable senior campaign continues | Freshman DT Henderson an unlikely hero as his forced fumble helps Green Wave overcome late offensive mistake | Team heads into its bye week with a perfect 5-0 record as pivotal date with Notre Dame at South Bend awaits

Gainsville, FL -- Former NFL head coach Bruce Arians once stated "There is no lesson you can get from losing that you can't get from almost losing." For #5 ranked Tulane on Saturday, those words rang true as they overcame mistakes and narrowly escaped for a 27-22 victory over #9 Florida in a rainy downpour at the Swamp. Senior RB Tony Tompkins was magic once again for the Green Wave and finished the night with 25 carries for 150 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. But despite Tompkins' fifth straight game with over 100 yards from scrimmage to start the season, turnovers kept the Gators in the game and the Wave would eventually need a big play down the stretch from an unlikely hero during the game's closing moments.

There were no signature 50+ yard runs by Tony Tompkins on Saturday, however the veteran running back was steady and finished with 150 rushing yards and 3 scores.

The evening got off to an ominous start for the visiting Green Wave, as QB Jimmy McBride would conclude an 8-play opening drive by throwing an interception to Gators SS Ian Leslie to start the game. Leslie would finish the game with a team-high 10 tackles, and his forced turnover would eventually result in a field goal that gave the Gators an early 3-0 lead.

Later, after the Wave surrendered second field goal by Florida freshman PK Aaron Goodman, another error by McBride would result in points for the Gators. This time, Florida freshman OLB Jamie Jenkins was able to come away with a strip-sack and star DT Jared Wayne recovered deep in Florida territory. On the very next play from scrimmage, RB Elliot Johnson's tantalizing 80-yard touchdown scamper in which he broke two tackles near the line of scrimmage gave the Gators a commanding 13-0 lead with 5:44 to go in the first half.

Tulane was able to stop the bleeding with its next drive. A 12-play 80-yard march that lasted close to four minutes would result in a 2-yard touchdown run by Tompkins, his first of the game, which made the score 13-7 late in the second quarter.

After surrendering yet another field goal by Goodman, this one from 29 yards away that extended the Gators' lead to 16-7 with just 0:35 remaining until halftime, Tulane got a big play that perhaps changed the complexion of the game.

With his team still with all three timeouts, head coach D. Geezy decided to stay aggressive despite there only being a few seconds to go in the half. On first down, his aggressiveness was awarded when a quick pass into the flat to RB Michael Brown Jr. was caught and the sophomore pass-catching specialist spun past one defender near the sideline and turned on the jets for a 74-yard gain that put the ball inside of the Gators 5-yard line, setting up a goal-to-go situation. Tompkins' second 2-yard touchdown of the evening would cut his team's deficit to 16-14 going into the break, but it was Brown Jr. who deserved most of the credit for the points just before halftime.

"We said before that series that we were looking for somebody to make a play, because we certainly had no plans to play it safe there before the half. Thankfully, Michael delivered," said Geezy of Brown, who was playing in his first game back after sustaining a pectoral injury in week two.

Brown Jr.'s big play provided just the catalyst Tulane's offense needed, and that momentum carried over into the second half.

The Green Wave defense was able to get a stop on Florida's opening possession of the second half, forcing a punt that put the ball right back into the hands of its offense, which delivered. Tompkins' 8-yard touchdown carry concluded an 8-play 67-yard drive and gave his team its first lead of the game, a 21-16 advantage midway through the third quarter. The score was Tompkins' third on the day, and it appeared the Green Wave was poised to start dominating.

Florida QB Bo Walker's sensational 79-yard touchdown run gave the Gators a 22-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
Florida (3-2) had other plans however.

On their very next series, the Gators were able to strike quickly with yet another long touchdown. This time, senior QB Bo Walker would do the honors, as he broke two tackle attempts and took a zone-read option keeper the distance for a 79-yard touchdown that gave Florida the lead right back at 22-21 following an incomplete pass on the ensuing two-point conversion.

"We have got to tackle better, plain and simple," said Tulane second year defensive coordinator Karl Dunbar.

"Both of those long touchdowns were the direct result of guys missing tackles right at the line of scrimmage. As coaches, we can only put players in position to make plays; at the end of the day, the player ultimately has to be the one to execute."

The Gators lead did not last long, as the Wave would go on another long drive and concluded an 11-play march with a 21-yard field goal by Larson that put the away team back on top 24-22 late in the third quarter. Then, Larson would add to his day by drilling another kick from 49 yards away to extend the lead to 27-22 with 4:45 to play.

The Tulane defense was able to get another stop and force a punt with under four minutes to play, giving the ball back to its offense with a chance to salt away the victory. It all came down to a second down and six to go situation with 1:34 remaining in the game with the ball near midfield and the Gators out of timeouts and needing a big play from someone. And that they got.

Gators senior DT Jared Wayne, who had a sack in each of the two teams' previous two matchups, including one in Florida's 36-17 SEC Championship Game win over the Wave two seasons ago, came up with a sack on second down, setting up a third and 12. Then, on the very next play, Wayne broke through once again, this time not only sacking McBride, but causing the redshirt sophomore to fumble. The loose ball would get recovered by Gators CB Adam Briggs, setting up their offense with possession of the football with 1:24 remaining down by five.

After being out-shined by fellow starting DT Micah Harris all season long, redshirt freshman DT Byron Henderson came away with the first big play of his career when he caused Gators RB Elliot Johnson to fumble to seal the game with about a minute remaining.

Unfortunately for Florida, Wayne's fourth quarter heroics would not pay dividends. Two plays following the turnover, Johnson would take a first down carry up the gut for a 5-yard gain, but not before being stripped of the football by Green Wave redshirt freshman DT Bryon Henderson. The ball would lay on the wet and muddy turf for a couple of seconds before sophomore CB J.T. Hills was able to scoop it up, giving his team the ball back with 1:07 remaining and allowing his team to run out the clock on kneel downs.

"Sometimes, it is better to be lucky than good. We weren't very good there offensively in the closing sequence, but fortunately our defense bailed us out," said Geezy.

"We learned some lessons today and thankfully, those lessons didn't cost us a win."

Tulane (5-0) will face Notre Dame (5-0) in South Bend in two weeks following a bye. The Green Wave blew away the Fighting Irish 59-34 last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, one year after dropping a 30-25 decision at rainy South Bend.

QB Jimmy McBride and his fellow Tulane offensive players celebrate after his final kneel down capped off a critical win at rainy Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

Gators fans braved the elements and came ready to help their team try to come away with its second win over the Green Wave in its last three tries.

Sophomore RB Elliot Johnson's 80-yard touchdown run increased Florida's early lead to 13-0. Johnson would go on to finish the contest with 112 yards on 14 carries.

DE T.J. Pearson and the Green Wave defense took down QB Bo Walker three times on the evening.

WR Joel Miller's one-handed catch helped extend a Florida drive near the end of the first half which eventually led to a field goal that increased the Gators' lead to 16-7.

RB Michael Brown Jr., playing in his first game back from an injury sustained back in week 2, turned a short pass upfield for a 74-yard gain with just 0:11 remaining in the first half. The big play would set up a touchdown that cut the Wave's deficit to 16-14 just before halftime that perhaps was the game's turning point.

Despite having to throw the ball through torrential rain, QB Jimmy McBride finished the day with 312 yards through the air.

Senior MLB Mario Young was once again all over the field and finished with 10 tackles on the evening. The New Orleans native leads the Green Wave with a whopping 54 tackles, including 41 solo stops, more than twice as many as the next best teammate in both categories.

Senior and first year starting DT Micah Harris' surprising season continued as he came away with his team-leading 5th sack on the year. Harris' sack total is Tulane's best by an interior lineman since former DT Anthony McCloud's 6 sacks all the way back in 2012.

For the third time in three matchups, DT Jared Wayne wreaked havoc on the Green Wave offensive line, finishing with 6 tackles and 2 sacks on the evening.

In the game's waning moments, McBride's fumble gave the Gators the football back with under two minutes to go with the home team trailing by five.

Sophomore OLB Sean Williamson celebrates after Tulane was able to come away with a game-sealing fumble with just over a minute remaining.

There was nothing but respect from both sides after Saturday evening's classic battle at the Swamp.

How often do you play Notre Dame?

I want USC to beat them, but I also want your strength of schedule to remain pristine. It seems like you play the game of the week every Saturday. The schedule really doesn't let up.

                              Good luck and good work.

(BTW, did not know the Manny Fresh thing had come to fruition in real life)

Huge win over the Gators! TT has put this team on his back lately and has to be a Heisman candidate. Moving up to #3 in the polls is huge! I can't believe the Saints actually brought in Mannie Fresh! It really is like they have been following this dynasty lol.
