Jason Maxiell?!?!!? 85 OVR?!?!? Has MyTeam jumped the shark already?

Touched on this in another thread...

But this might be proof. Today as part of the Intensity themed release 2K dropped a Jason Maxiell card with an 85 OVR rating...

Yeah...the same Maxiell whose best season (2012-13) saw him start 71 of 72 games for a 29-win Pistons team while averaging 6.9 ppg and 5.7 rpg.

Now he has a card in 2K with a higher rating than some of the best players currently in the NBA and some All Star historic players.

On top of that, this card has some individual ratings that are just INSANE.

95 Off Rebound? For a guy ho was mostly a bnech player except for that one year previously mentioned.

    95 STAMINA!?!?!

The most minutes Maxiell played in his career was 24.8 per game!!!

That means he AVERAGED just barely HALF the minutes in a 48 minute game!!!! And 2K thinks that deserves a 95 Stamina rating, apparently.

Checkout the latest stats of Jason Maxiell. Get info about his position, age, height, weight, draft status, shoots, school and more on Basketball-Reference.com

Check out his Basketball Reference page...

Apparently 2K is just grasping for straws at this point. I mean...this card makes Maxiell a better player in MyTeam than some of the best players in NBA history.

    What a joke...smfh.

It's a fantasy mode and there are always some outliers that are totally ridiculous.

And there have been worse in prior years, early in the cycle.

I personally think it's cool. Maybe Jason Maxiell has a nephew who finally gets to play a cool version of his uncle in 2K.

Exactly. I don't know why we get these complaints every year. 2K consistently reminds us that this is not a sim basketball mode. Jimmer barely even played in the league and had one of the best cards in the game last year lmao

        Personally, I think that's NONSENSE.

The "fantasy" part of the mode is the ability to use players of past and present together. That does NOT mean you need to make up fantasy cards.

The cards need to reflect a realistic version of the player...otherwise...what's the point?

And please...give me a break...are you actually suggesting 2K should issue unrealistic cards of players simply on the off chance that one of their family members MIGHT play the game?!!?!

        C'mon man!

I thought y'all were smarter and more SIM than that...

We get the complaints every year because its flat-out stupid.

There's no need to create cards that aren't realistic versions of a player.

And it's the reason why this mode devolves into NBA Jam about this time every year....as 2K desperately releases more and more overpowered cards to try and appease cheesers, try-hards, and silly little children...many of whom don't even BUY VC! They grind and glitch anyway they can for it...

Because ultimate team modes in general were created with the sole purpose of making money. They'll always be ridiculous players in these modes because that's what's attractive. Hell, MUT has player cards where the player plays a completely different position. As long as microtransactions exist the model will be the same. Bigger and better usually equates to more profitable. There's only so far you can go before things get absurd and we get amethyst Maxiells and Hakeems that shoot as well as Curry. It's just part of the game, man. Asking 2K, or any other game, to remove unrealistic content from a mode like this is like asking a casino to remove the slot machines.

As I've said before...I completely disagree.

This makes the assumption that this is the ONLY thing people want in these modes. Given the number of complaints we see EVERY year on this forum and others...we KNOW that's not true.

MyTeam and modes like it are the ultimate SANDBOX mode for gamers.

Thinking that the ONLY way to profit from these modes is with ridiculously overpowered content/players and gameplay that feels like NBA Jam is a huge MISTAKE.

That thinking leaves an entire segment of gamers out of these modes. A segment of gamers that generally tends to be older...a segment that also has more disposable income...and less TIME - which means more of an incentive to BUY VC/MT instead of spend hours grinding for it or sniping for it.

Forcing MyTeam to be an ARCADE mode is a mistake...especially financially.

If 2K put a separate SuperMax option in MyTeam right now with a restrictive salary cap (or maybe several with multiple tiers)....they'd see an instant surge in the number of gamers actively playing MyTeam.

              That's a fact.

Just look on this forum...well....maybe that's not the best idea these days as it's practically DEAD because SIM gamers have LEFT MyTeam.

You can find the same theme on other forums...2KMT Central's forum has many posts and comments about this.

Gamers who lean to the SIM side of gaming do NOT want to play SuperMax...

The main reason for this is that they don't WANT to play with overpowered teams with 13 Diamond and Amy players on the roster.

The quick answer is to NOT do that...

Here's the PROBLEM with that...All it does is put those gamers at a DISADVANTAGE because they are FORCED to play teams STACKED with those types of rosters.

So...they simply walk away from MyTeam!

Why even bother to play when you're almost certain to be matched against a roster built for CHEESE and NBA Jam-style gameplay?!?!

So...please tell me how it isn't in 2K's own BEST interest to give those type of gamers a place to play multiplayer online games?!?!!?!

It would mean more active gamers in MyTeam...which would mean more of an opportunity to sell VC. On top of that, it would help stabilize the marketplace AND add a tremendous amount of depth and strategy to the game.

It's not that complicated and very easy to do on 2K's end....they're already doing it to some extent.

What exactly is the issue again?

You're obviously very angry about this and I get what you're saying, but please try to not direct that frustration at other people who are just having a conversation with you, and respectfully so.

I don't care about there being a Sapphire Maxiell because it's just a Sapphire and it doesn't disrupt the balance of the game. If someone, for some weird reason, is a huge Jason Maxiell fan, then good for them. The remark about his nephew was a joke, and I thought that this was obvious.

We don't have an argument about any of this. I agree with you that I think a sim style game would be more interesting. Have the prime versions of players be more like the versions that exist in the default roster.

I also think that there should at least be a separate online mode to MyTeam with a heavily restrictive cap that allows only for 2 or 3 superstars, 1 or 2 borderline All-Stars, and then role players. Or something like that.

But 2K has clearly determined that this is not good for their revenues. Or they're too stupid to see that it's bad for their revenues. Either way, it's in their hands.

I don't think it's going to change. Vent if you like. That's your right and I'm not telling you not to. My suggestion would be to only play MyTeam offline or Friendlies, or move over to playing MyLeague or Play Now Online.

I doubt I'll play MyTeam for 2K19 and may not even keep playing all the way through this cycle. I might switch to playing MyLeague/PNO.

New cards are introduced for revenue reasons Lou, sadly Gameplay and everything else has been put on the back burner from 2k these past couple of seasons.

If only people would stop buying their packs with real money. Can only dream. But i respect it's their right to buy up, but sadly it's 100% the downfall of 2k right now.

Yeah, sorry to the OP, others have said it, Ultimate/My Team modes are only about being a cash cow. Authenticity of any degree in those modes doesn't matter in the slightest.

I'm not mad...just frustrated and I tend to write with a direct tone.

I guess I will have to look into MyLeague...

I still prefer the idea of MyTeam because I can randomly set my team and jump right into a game. No drafting...scheduling...and other stuff that comes with MyLeague.

Just feels like 2K is forgetting about a large segment of their customers...the segment of their customers that helped this game become the dominant basketball game on the market.

I also don't understand why we don't even get ACCESS to the lower level Historic players...

Like why is there no John Crotty or Bill Wennington, etc, etc?

It feels like the mode has been dumbed-down to appease the lowest common denominator 2K player. That's the exact OPPOSITE modus operandi that got 2K to where it is now.

Playing with Steph Curry on a custom team should be enough...why do we need an overpowered, suped-up Curry?

All it does is promote cheese and arcade gameplay by making it EASIER for those who want to do those things to do them.

Which is exactly why anyone with even a slight lean towards being a SIM player is running away from MyTeam as fast as they can.

Other than the player model and animations...most of the higher level cards...and especially the higher tiered Moments cards...are all the same.

They are all basically overpowered cards that can do EVERYTHING...and serve as nothing more than a crutch for terrible players to play terrible basketball...and still win games.

Yeah this guy doesn't get it. Sim gamers are always the minority. Of course I want a mode where we basically build functioning teams with realistic players and see if we can use their combined talents to win a game that doesn't play like NBA Street. Yeah I want to be able to win games off of play calling and execution, not because I paid for one of the few centers that has a decent 3 ball and the PG with the highest driving dunk tendency. I would love to build a team around one or two stars that perfectly compliments their play style. I thought that's what system proficiency would do for 2K18. So I agree with your desires, but I also choose to be realistic..

I realize for every 1 person like me, there are 50, maybe even 100 school age kids who are begging their moms for more VC to try and pack one of these Godly cards so they can build impossible teams that make no sense strategically, but are so OP that it barely matters. There's a reason the market crashes every time one releases because the release of these cards gets people spending. Because that's what sells. The general public doesn't care about sim gamers. Nobody's crashing the market over role players that'd fit nicely into a Switch All defensive scheme, unless he has 5 HOF badges and a 90 3 ball or 100 dunk tendency. Lmao

Maybe I'm wrong...but I don't believe 2K is making the majority of their money selling VC to schoolkids buying it with their parents' CC.

If anything I'd bet that most of the sales of VC probably come from gamers 18-24 who are in school or still live at home.

As far as the other stuff goes....personally I don't understand what the obsession with these cards is. Where is the strategy...where is the fun?

The ONLY explanation that I can come up with is that these cards feed TROLLS.

Trolls who simply want to be able to do stupid things in the game that CANNOT be stopped. That's all these cards do...because they sure as heck don't give a realistic representation of these players.

These trolls just want to be able to do things to make other players MAD...they get joy out of being an insufferable troll whose only purpose is to make other gamers angry. SMFH.

Just break out a 85 OVR Maxiell card...or that cheesy Wes Unseld card and watch these trolls abuse them.

                              One other thought...

A big issue with MyTeam is there aren't many realistic versions of the best players.

And that's on BOTH ends of the spectrum.

An Emerald LeBron doesn't play much like LeBron....because it might only come with 3 Bronze Badges. Because the badges play such a crucial role in gameplay, it often means that the ONLY way to get that card to play LIKE LeBron is to use the speed and strength ratings to turbo and dunk...

Even when that card is fully badged...it's capped out at 8 badges...which means it still does not play like LeBron.

At the same time, the only LeBron cards that come with all the Badges needed to realistically represent LeBron....are overpowered cards with inflated ratings AND all the badges.

What you're left with is either a watered-down LeBron...or an overpowered LeBron...and no realistic version of LeBron.

                              That's a problem.
