Essentially, the lack of control is the frustrating part. Granted, a semi-shutdown defense can be achieved; I have seen a number of games from competitive players where defense was solid, to a degree. But those all involved USERing a player, as opposed to coaching players.

Even so, most of the best defenses are just a few key plays that have the logic that happens to be "that good" and of course many people flock to those key plays...

Granted, there are fads in the NFL, so Madden does represent that, whether on purpose or not. The ability to create an effective defense or offense is nearly non-existent..What Madden allows is for people to "find" the most effective play(s). IMO..
If you set up your game to have a realistic amount of time in the pocket as well as bumping up the coverage sliders then a lot more of the plays on defense become viable. It lets you see that it is actually more of the passing plays that are not usable due to the flawed route running and release techniques of receivers.

Default All-Pro and souped up MUT teams contributed greatly to the competitive space being more about Madden tactics than football tactics. That's fine as long as they keep adding aspects to sim style to make it a mode that is not about the manipulation of gameplay mechanics. It's crazy, but adjusted All-Madden sliders is now the best way to get the most realistic gameplay experience.

Do this today: Instead of $%*#!@& on a game you're not going to play or movie you're not going to watch, say something good about a piece of media you're excited about.

Do the same thing tomorrow. And the next. Now do it forever.
