    Alliance of American Football

If you havent been paying attention, this is a new league that is going to start after the Super Bowl next year.

Learn about aaf.com and contact us for any business inquiries.

    Rules
-Teams will have 50 players on each roster, with some of those players selected by a territorial draft.

-Telecasts will feature no television timeouts and 60 percent fewer commercials, with the league aiming for an approximate real-time game length of 150 minutes, down from just over 180 in the NFL.

-All teams must attempt two-point conversions after each touchdown; there will be no extra point kicks.

-There will be no kickoffs; all possessions will begin on each team's own 25-yard line, the same as touchbacks in the NFL and NCAA. The team that would be on defense can keep the ball, in lieu of an onside kick, by attempting a scrimmage play from their own 35-yard line and gaining at least 10 yards.

-The play clock will run only 30 seconds, 10 seconds shorter than in the NFL.

-Two coach's challenges per team are the only replays.

-Outside organizations would handle head-safety protocols.

Seems this is a blueprint for failure.

Less than a year away from when its scheduled to start and it is not even known what cities will have teams? Is there a draft date yet?

    Why do they hate kickers?

Look on the bright side, at least the XFL won't be the most failed football league.

There are probably a lot of legitimate reasons to ignore the AAF, but this isn't one of them.

Kickoffs are almost completely inconsequential in the NFL anymore. Something like half of them are pointless touchbacks; heck, the Panthers achieved touchbacks on 85% of their kickoffs last year. Honestly the NFL should get rid of them too. Not even talking about for safety reasons - though getting rid of the most dangerous play in the game will have the side benefit of making the game safer - but it is incredibly rare anymore that anything of consequence happens on a kickoff play.

Just spare us the pomp and circumstance, put the offense on the 25, and start playing again, IMO.

Jon Bois of SBNation goes into this much more thoroughly and much better than I can (and he covers the loss of the onside kick and proposals to replace it).

I'm looking forward to the AAF and the possibility of San Diego getting a team! I do think it will be quality football that will lure a bunch of non drafted players looking to extend their football career beyond college.

If I am reading the rules right (which I may not be) the onside kick rule seems like a no brainer. One play to gain 10 Yards and you can keep the ball. Seriously how do they equate 1 10 yard play to recovering an onside kick. Down and distance gain of 10 Yards is accomplished way more frequently than recovery of onside kick.

If they plan this they need the team to have one play to convert 20 Yards or more to keep possession.

Just my take and once again maybe I misread how that plays out.

I believe you're interpreting it correctly but your comparing it to results of plays on first, second or third down.

You need to compare more closely to the success rate of plays on fourth and 10 instead (they aren't great).

Still much better chance than the results of an onside kick but it's far from automatic.

A week later this was confirmed.
San Diego will be the site of the sixth franchise in the Alliance of American Football league that debuts next February.

Cities are now San Diego, Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis, Salt Lake City and Phoenix.

San Antonio and St. Louis are among the cities that may get teams as well.

Relative to this, the XFL seems to be sitting on it's hands.

Does this league have a TV deal yet? I'd be interested in watching some games just based on some of the head coaches signed onto it.
