‘Member When Madden Had These Features?

I came across this gem on reddit that shows all the features that were gutted over the years:
Discover the magic of the internet at Imgur, a community powered entertainment destination. Lift your spirits with funny jokes, trending memes, entertaining gifs, inspiring stories, viral videos, and so much more from users.

Some of these features are roughly 15 years old...

Flawed? Sure. But much, much better than nothing. Nothing more to say.

Re: ‘Member When Madden Had These Features?

            Oh. This again. Let's see:

            - the Minicamp games in franchise mode were replaced by a subset of the drills in Skills Trainer, and Skills Trainer is a far more effective tool for teaching people how to play Madden.

            - League and team news is a feature in current franchise mode with the same function, it just doesn't look like a newspaper because newspapers are archaic

            - Live Opponents would be a nice feature to have back but it's way down the priority list given that online franchise now exists. If I want to play my friend in a franchise game, I'll just invite him in.

            - WR Spotlight is still in the game, I use it all the time

            - Madden Moments is still in the game, it was rebuilt into Ultimate Team's weekly content drops

            - the current Weekly Gameplan feature is a more effective teaching and training tool than any weekly gameplan feature which existed in past Maddens

            - player retirements are still viewable in the league transaction screen during the offseason

            - per-player career stat tracking is very much a part of M18's franchise mode in the player card

            - career-ending injuries are still in M18's franchise mode

            - injury rehabilitation options are part of M18 franchise mode within the Big Decisions component

            - player training drills are part of franchise mode in the Weekly Training feature

There's some legitimate stuff here - restricted free agency, coaching staffs, draft classes - but there's a lot of inaccuracy, misrepresentation, and padding because "EA keeps taking stuff out of the game" is an easy thing to post on Reddit for upvotes.

Finally, as a statement of opinion, I think Owner Mode is terrible and should be cut entirely from the game, so any omission with respect to ticket prices, concessions, stadium upgrades and sponsorships, etc. I simply do not care about at all.

I’d like to address some of this.

-People still get their sports news from newspapers/magazines. Saying that they’re archaic is a bit...incorrect, IMO. The old NCAA games had a Sports Illustrated cover that was really, really cool. Why can’t Madden do that?

-The drills in Franchise weren’t for people learning to play Madden (while they can be and are encouraged), but for player development. This whole XP system is severely flawed as a whole.

-Where is this WR Spotlight you speak of?

-I don’t want to count MUT Moments as Madden Moments. Throwback to Madden 02’s Greatest Games where you could go to any era and, yes, play through some of the greatest games ever. Those are true Madden Moments IMO.

-The weekly gameplan feature is okay. Not on the level of 2K5, but I’m not opening up that can of worms.

-I hardly see career-ending injuries and I’ve dabbled in about 30-40 Franchises since release. Do they happen? Yes, but not on the level that they should. MLB The Show is a great example of implementing this.

Lastly, EA DOES take stuff out of the game. Quality in Franchise Mode. Superstar Mode. The ability to completely customize any player. Create-A-Team. Create-A-Fan. Create-A-Play. Out-of-franchise salary adjustments. Contract holdouts.

Just because you don’t like it, doesn’t mean it should be scrapped...

I put this in the Rex Dickson thread, but it seems appropriate here:

And here's the rub that a lot of people don't understand or follow: Moonlight Swami asking people what they want to see in CFM/Franchise mode:

While there are plenty of real reasons as to why its not simple to bring those things back, especially the way they were, I totally understand the frustration

Re: ‘Member When Madden Had These Features?

Some things existed in either prior maddens or either of the head coach games. Most i can easily remember were contract orientated and i believe that the suits thought that was too complicated. The two things i remember in 2k5 were the weekly schedule which i prefer over any EA practice I've seen and the ability to vary contracts; front loaded etc.
I want more than one type of franchise flag, 5th year options, RFA, renegotiate when cap space is available etc. all the things that teams do to secure a roster and manage the cap.

Just to answer this for now: it's a defensive hot route, so it's a bit deeper in the pre-play controls than it used to be.

Press Y (XBOX) / Triangle (PS4) for defensive coverage adjustments, then the A / X for individual coverage adjustments, then the target receiver's icon button, then A / X for Spotlight Receiver.

how is that incorrect? archaic doesn't mean people aren't doing it... just that it's the old way of doing it.

the majority of people are absolutely getting their news from something other than newspaper. The only person i even know who still regularly reads them is my 70 something grandma. My parents/aunts/uncles all moved to their phones and/or tv.

I miss the gameplan feature in Madden 12 the most. Back then, we could select up to 30 plays per-situation and rate them. That way, when playing game, plays would lay out nicely, with highest starred plays appearing first, according to situation.

We were also allowed to actually go to practice mode and gameplannned plays were available for selection. It wasn't perfect, as I add to marry all my special situations to redzone so that when I moved the ball inside the plus 20 in practice, those specific plays would then come up.

The current "gameplan" feature in Madden is an insult to sim players who actually want to put a little thought and work into their playcalling. Limiting us to only 6-9 "strategy picks" per-situation, which don't show up in practice mode, is another example of revamping and then not properly implementing a feature.

I liked the old way of showing retirements, where it was the first phase of the off-season and tough to miss. Now you have to search them out to see them

I tweeted just after his job announcement with a feature I wanted in M19 franchise mode and there was no acknowledgement whatsoever. Not saying I expected a reply but a LIKE just to imply it was read. The fact they are asking for franchise mode suggestions when they ask every single year and should already have a lengthy list of requests is stupid.

By the way, I thought the position battles feature was a nice way of making pre-season relevant.

Unsurprisingly, game plans are also still included and functional in Madden 18.

You'll now find game plan setup within the custom playbook feature. The plays the game chooses from your game plan based on the star ratings get mixed in with the Community and Strategy suggested play calls, in the Coach Suggestions section.
