    2022 Recruiting Update #1

One of the things I promised myself to a better job at this season was with reporting recruiting. I like how Hellisan and Deegeezy in particular do regular updates instead of every so often as I’ve done in the past and wanted to change my approach as such. Particularly as this class is quite important for our future considering who we’re targeting, I want to keep things updated often.

So, let’s talk recruiting! Still very early in the season, but here’s an early look at who we are talking to. On the heels of national title #2, naturally some of the nation's top recruits are expressing interest in coming to Storrs/E. Hartford. Despite this, I don't think the class as a whole is very strong, and I think our chances of putting together a top class is slim. This is irrelevant though as I've yet to pull in a Top-10 class in eight seasons - so hopefully we can snag some gems and coach them up! There are several kids I like a lot and would be elated to pull in.

I’ll keep this board updated as we add/drop players and as targeted players begin to commit later in the season.

As far as the contents of the board, we have quite a few needs this season at the following positions:

    TIGHT END

After watching three tight ends leave the team in the last two years, we’ve let the position thin out and we need to make a conscious effort to improve there through our recruiting -- we hope to sign at least two. Tate McCall and Evan Jeppesen are my top choices in this class, and they compliment each other well. McCall is a blocking tight end, while Jeppesen makes his mark more as a receiver. Both should be able to compete for a starting job(s?) immediately, alongside new starter Alex Paige and young freshmen Kenny Graves and Josh Mirvil.

    LINEBACKER

A spot that we were once quite deep at has thinned out considerably in recent years due to graduation, and while we have some ideas as to replacements, we’re on the lookout for more depth. We’ve got three senior starters for four spots and I fully expect our young star Jevon Sapp to turn pro after this season. I like Marshawn Dortch, Avan Goulding and Colorado transfer Marlon Bush, but we need more behind them as Vasean Gatewood, Scott Sarria and Jayson Meier need more time to develop.

Payton Ash is my #1 on the entire recruiting board - just as Lonte’ Speier, Jordan Brown and Chamarkelle Byrom were must-haves for us two years ago, Ash is someone I feel we need to sign. Early tape suggests that Ash is tremendously talented and polished for someone his age and is a solid athlete with good size, though we’d love to see him put on some weight. If all four starters this year are in fact gone at the end of the year, I can see a scenario where Goulding moves inside and Ash starts from Day One on the outside in our 3-4 look.

We have also begun scouting a handful of inside linebackers - Kennard Young and Kerdarius Barber will get most of our attention. I’m not sure either will be ready immediately, but both have potential to start down the line and provide solid depth until then.

    DEFENSIVE END

A poor offseason development wise from several of our young linemen forces us to reevaluate who we have on the edge and look at new blood to challenge them - we already lose a starter in James Mandrell after this season anyhow.

Amari Hunt is ready to start for us right now - getting him would be huge toward building for the future. We’ll have to outlast bigger programs for his services though, particularly Ohio State and Michigan. Andre Cwik and Quayshaun Wise are other highly touted prospects I like who may not be able to challenge for a starting job right away, but if they work hard they have bright futures for us.

    OFFENSIVE LINE

We’ve had some trouble developing recruits at these spots in recent years, so we’re swinging for the fences this year. At the top of my list is Pennsylvania native Naquan Foster, the top guard in the country, to bolster our interior and team with Korey Davis-Love for years to come.

The other name at the top is Cole Monroe, a tackle from Ohio. He would be a taylor-made replacement for Kevin Jones, who is graduating at the end of the year, as he has ideal size for a blind side protector while his skill and technique are undeniable.

Matt Greene and Taevion Ellis are the other four-star line prospects on my board; we’ve been targeting center as well with a trio of three-star prospects in Francisco Martinez, Deontay Bumbury and Jeremy Thompson on the board. I expect a big time battle for that starting role next year as veteran Lawron Leak is set to graduate this spring.

    CORNERBACK

We’re alarmingly thin at corner -- only three guys are scheduled to return in 2023 (for now). We haven’t found any top-line targets at that position, meaning we’re putting our trust in Tory Greening, Linzell Tyson and Kelvin Cooke.

Marquice Lenon and Javion Hartfield are my favorites, but we would be happy with LeShaun Shatner and Brandon House as project recruits.

    ELSEWHERE....

I’ve got a lot of athletes on the board who could help fill these positions as well. O.J. Orr is one of the top recruits in the nation and could step in at corner as well as wide receiver or tailback. With Linzell Tyson playing both ways so far, Coach Belichick has likely opened the door for more super utility players such as Orr. As such, we will be looking closely at Rondell Downs, Ardarius Watts, Kyree Brock and Martin Core III to do a bit of the same at wideout and in the secondary, perhaps.

We may not target Elite 11 QB Alex Ferguson heavily as we are relatively deep at QB. However, if Jordan Brown puts together a good season and appeals to the pro scouts (I don’t see any reason why he won’t), Coach Belichick will likely look carefully for Brown’s replacement. Kelly Carlson has been working hard and developing at a good clip. I would be willing to trust him as a starter for a year or two if the situation arose. However, Ferguson has more talent than Carlson does.. And it’s possible that Ferguson could start in his second year on campus. Ferguson reminds me of Bryant Shirreffs, but… better.

Darren Allen would be a nice piece to add to a deep backfield, especially as I think J.P. Byers will go pro after this year and Mike Molden is now a veteran and is set to depart the program anytime in the next two seasons. However, Allen is certainly not a necessity and will be treated as more of a luxury. We will not be too upset if we lose this race.

Same for Allen goes for wideouts Ben Hilliard and John Pratt. But with no expected departures from our already talented and deep wideout group at the end of the year… imagine the targets we could have for next year when these two join Lonte’ Speier, Chamarkelle Byrom, Marcus Rodgers, Devin Brown, Drew Talley and Collin Miranda… I’m salivating already.

        A Collective Sigh of Relief

UConn clips Vandy, CAC headman Miller in surprising thriller

Despite a few turnovers, Jordan Brown helped UConn gut out a victory with five more touchdown passes - he's got ten in just two games.

Touchdown, Jordan Brown is beginning to become a familiar chant for UConn fans. Thankfully so, as UConn needed every yard of the sophomore quarterback’s output on Saturday.

UConn extended their undefeated record against CAC alumni by defeating Vanderbilt 42-38 in Nashville’s Bridgestone Kickoff pres. by Franklin American Mortgage, hosted at Nissan Stadium. UConn is out to a 2-0 start in their title defense, but one thing is undeniable, though: CAC coaches have given UConn some very good games in recent seasons. Saturday’s contest against the Commodores was no exception.

The reigning national champs played perhaps their worst game in the last twelve months, needing 5 passing touchdowns from Brown and some late plays on both sides to put away a pesky ‘Dores squad, coached by second year man Dale Miller (user: glunsford). In an unusually high scoring contest for UConn’s standards, Vandy held a 38-35 lead after three quarters of play; UConn scored the only touchdown in the fourth quarter, a ten-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Chamarkelle Byrom, to hang on for a 42-38 triumph.

To say that UConn played sloppy was quite an understatement. Jumping out to a 14-0 lead early on, UConn looked to be in control until they lost star tailback J.P. Byers in the first quarter with a game-ending elbow injury (he’ll be good to go next week). From there, they couldn’t quite hold their grip on the lead.

Free safety Tony Rush continued his adventures in pass coverage by getting beat over the middle by tight end Ryan Holt for a 36 yard touchdown, followed up by an interception from linebacker Van Crawley and an ensuing 32 yard touchdown run from quarterback John Larsen to quickly tie the game. Crawley’s takeaway was one of two in the first half for the Vandy defense, the other being a fumble recovery deep in UConn territory that both resulted in touchdowns for Vandy and their spread option attack.

Vandy's defense, led by Cole (LEFT) and Crawley (RIGHT) did a great job harassing Jordan under center, but couldn't quite make enough stops.

The offense was on full display for both sides, however. Devin Brown and Alex Paige each hauled in two touchdown passes for UConn while freshman Ashanti Swift ran for 100 yards and a touchdown, stepping in for Byers and providing a glimpse of the future at tailback.

On the other side, though, Vandy was determined and went blow for blow with UConn’s high-octane offense all afternoon. Larsen accounted for all five of Vandy’s touchdowns, doing so in a variety of ways. They connected on the deep ball (Tommy Bullock for 74 yards), medium passes (Pierre Pope for 14 and Holt for 36) and two runs for 5 and 32 yards a pop.

John Larsen nearly took down UConn single-handedly.

The fearless Commodores held a three-point advantage entering the fourth quarter, partly because of five turnovers in total from the UConn offense. In the second half, UConn saw scoring opportunities fade away as Brown threw an interception in the end zone to a lurking Josh Cole, and lost a second fumble after failing in an attempt to slide down following a scramble. Timmy Mitchell scooped up the loose football as UConn drove inside the ten yard line looking for the go-ahead score, failing to convert.

Fortunately, UConn’s defense, which had been torched all day long, made the big plays when it mattered most. Time ticking away in the fourth, it was linebacker Mike Hill, with 27 tackles through the first two games, picked off Larsen immediately thereafter to get UConn the ball right back where they lost it. Jordan capitalized this time, throwing what would be the winning touchdown to Byrom. Two more fourth down stops later, the Huskies celebrated and sighed heavily in relief as the clock reached zeroes, knowing they escaped a poor showing against a motivated home team.

“We’ve got to play better”, an unimpressed Stephen Belichick stated after the game. “I’ll take the blame for this one”, added Jordan Brown. “Five turnovers is unacceptable, no matter how well I play. Things like that will bite us against better teams that we’ll see later in the year”.

It’s hard to fault Brown too much though if UConn is winning, given his performance through the first two games of the season. Despite the five turnovers, Brown played remarkably well for a second straight week. He once again looked in total command of the offense, throwing for 422 yards and five more touchdowns to run his total to ten in just two games. Byrom led all receivers with nine catches for 177 yards and a score.

Byrom seemed a lot less worried than others on his team about the turnovers and close game. “As long as we’re winning, no matter how, everything’s okay”, Byrom commented with a smile. To his credit, all UConn has done is win - headed into next week’s home opener against North Carolina State, the Huskies have now up to 12 straight, dating back to last October.

For the national champs, confidence is still a good thing to have.

UConn's receivers looked as sharp as ever - Devin Brown (LEFT) caught two touchdown passes, Byrom (CENTER) the winner, and Alex Paige (RIGHT) caught two of his own.

Hi All! I'm back from a bit of an extended break - school finished up last week and now I'm out until August. I've been checking up on some of the dynasties and look forward to checking in on all of them again soon, as well as getting back to regular posts with UConn. I've had the NC State game in the can for about two months so I hope to have that up early this week, and then we can play on from there! Thanks to all of you!

Reserve Wideout Talley Shelved 3 Weeks
The only injury to note for today's contest is that backup wide receiver Drew Talley has been ruled out for the next three weeks with a slight abdominal tear, an injury suffered last week and aggravated in practice this week. Thanks to UConn's bye week coming up soon, though, Talley is scheduled to only miss two games - today against NC State and next week against UCF.

This is not a huge loss as UConn still has six receivers suiting up for today's game. The redshirt junior from Dunmore, PA has been largely unable to crack the starting lineup in his years with the program, but has made contributions on special teams and as sub player. He has just one catch in UConn's first two games.

                  Dances with the Wolfpack

Sapp’s fumble six spurs UConn tear; Jordan Brown, Speier connect for three scores as Huskies blow by Wolfpack as rival UCF comes to Hartford next week

Jevon Sapp continues to assert himself as a star on defense.

Jevon Sapp was anointed as the new star on defense entering 2022 after a tremendous finish to his redshirt freshman campaign. A star is typically seen as someone who make plays that shift momentum in key games. Jevon Sapp showed his potential as a star on Saturday. What was shaping up to be a close matchup against a good N.C. State team turned into a blowout in the blink of an eye thanks in part to the exploits of the redshirt sophomore linebacker from North Carolina. He certainly repaid his home state on Saturday.

With Sapp’s fumble six playing a key role, the Huskies pulled away in the middle stages of their ACC opener to win with a convincing final score of 52-13, running their record to 3-0 and setting the pace in the ACC with a 1-0 conference record.

After a close call against Vanderbilt last week, a slow start and two long drives kept the game at only 3-3 after a quarter and left UConn looking not as strong as we have come to expect from their offense as of late. Tailback J.P. Byers, returning from injury last week, gave UConn the lead at the outset of the second quarter on a short touchdown run, and that would the high water mark for this game. For Wolfpack fans, in the words of late author Chinua Achebe, things fell apart.

On their next drive, coach Bo Pelini called a speed option to the right side. UConn covered quarterback Nicky Burdak pitched to Jirani Cunningham, but the toss went awry and was returned 52 yards for a touchdown by Sapp. UConn quickly held a 17-3 lead, and the Huskies never looked back, turning a tie game after one quarter into a 52-13 blowout on opening day for the Property.

Despite the running game continuing to struggle a bit, both Byers and Ashanti Swift contributed a rushing touchdown on offense. Jordan Brown connected thrice with Lonte’ Speier for scores through the air. While UConn’s offensive output was not quite as dominant as was the case in earlier weeks, they did more than enough to win, and got help from all sides. In addition to Sapp’s defensive score, wideout Marcus Rodgers returned the second half’s opening kick 101 yards for a touchdown, the first return touchdown for UConn since Jeff McNeal in 2020. By the midpoint of the fourth quarter, UConn had gone on a 42-3 run to leave little doubt about the outcome.

Speier caught a career-high three touchdowns on the afternoon.

UConn’s key to success defensively was to shut down NC State’s two top runners, Cunningham and DeMario Ross, and force the inexperienced Burdak to the air, a game plan that paid off in spades. Burdak, who threw for just 62 yards in the Wolfpack’s loss last week, was solid but unspectacular today, throwing for 224 yards and just the one touchdown to Rahsaan Ahmad, well after the game’s outcome was decided. Burdak was under duress for most of the afternoon as well, with UConn registering five sacks to keep the new starter on his toes.

Despite the efforts, Coach Stephen Belichick joked that “Our defense gave up 13 points too many as far as I’m concerned”, but let on that his troops put in a good effort. Sapp and Mike Hill once again led the charge with nine more tackles, giving the Canadian senior 35 in just three games, adding in a sack for his efforts. Also, while Sapp gets the credit for the fumble six, it was Hill who stuck to Burdak and forced the errant pitch. Making key plays in each of the first three games, it is no longer a secret that Hill has become the newest leader from the inside 'backer spot.

However, the joy of blowouts is that lesser-mentioned guys get shoutouts as well. Redshirt freshman nose tackle Ethan Buckingham picked up his first career sack, while third corner Tory Greening got a lot of playing time and five tackles on the afternoon.

Jordan Brown once again spoke praises about his teammates. “NC State has some tremendous talent”, noting their stars in junior defensive end Vondell Jones, who tallied a sack, and sophomore safety Tuarez Langley, who recorded an interception of Jordan in the third quarter on a deep ball intended for Speier.

He got next? Sophomore star safety Tuarez Langley showed why he is one of the ACC's best young players despite his team getting blown out. He made a fan out of me by displaying good coverage skills (LEFT) and a mean streak to boot (RIGHT, laying the wood on Devin Brown).

“But we put in another good effort and once again come out on top”, the Texan said with a smile. While Brown took a step back from his five-touchdown performances in the opening two games, the sophomore has still emerged as an early Heisman favorite, having surpassed 1,000 passing yards and 13 touchdowns early in the 2022 campaign, as well as passing at around a 76% clip.

“As long as we’re winning, I can’t ask for anything else”, Brown said.

UConn will have to put in another solid effort next week to keep the winning coming, as twelfth ranked Central Florida (1-0) and CAC headman Connor Turley (user: convict38) come to East Hartford next week in a colossal showdown of former conference rivals. The Knights are led by Heisman dark horse Aaron Houston under center and have solid units all around their roster. The game renews the Civil ConFLiCT rivalry started by Coach Diaco; the two teams haven’t played since 2017.

The running game has been a little shaky to start the season, but both Swift (LEFT) and Byers (RIGHT) scored this afternoon.

Especially as Tech nearly made the playoff last season, to keep it within seven is certainly an accomplishment. I know you got a bit of a tough draw as UMass has been awful throughout all eight seasons of the dynasty to this point, but I saw some potential when we played the Minutemen late last season. Your quarterback Lake is very talented, and if you can recruit well there's no reason to think you can't find success.

It's a big win for you guys - as you were close to making a bowl game last year, it's important to pull out wins like that. Hopefully Saulsberry can build on a solid freshman season and put your Cyclones over the hump this year.

And thanks for the comments about our good start! It's important we knock out these first few wins - perhaps our three hardest games of the season are up next in UCF, Virginia Tech and Pitt; luckily these are all at home, but hopefully we've built some good momentum. Thanks Nick!

                          UConn Flashback

2017: UCF nearly ruined UConn's national title hopes in 2017. The Huskies needed a 15-point rally and a walk-off field goal from freshman Michael Miller to seal the deal and barely escape with an undefeated record. Relive the game here!

2015: UConn tailback Max DeLorenzo ran for a career-high 185 yards as well as a 54-yard score to help UConn become bowl-eligible in a 42-36 win. William Stanback was one of the hardest players to defend in the early seasons of the Diaco era, running for 272 yards that afternoon. However, UCF couldn't get a pass offense going and UConn gutted out the win. Relive the game here!

                          Gameday visiting East Hartford

For the first time in five years, college football’s top pre-game show is visiting the Constitution State.

College GameDay’s press release for this weekend announced their intent to come to East Hartford and set up shop right in front of Rentschler Field. They’ll go live at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 17 on ESPN.

Rece, Kirk, Lee and the crew are in town to check out UConn’s renewal of the Civil ConFLiCT when twelfth ranked UCF comes to town, the first game between the two schools since 2017. The GameDay crew went to last September’s road opener against Penn State, but have not been to Hartford since UConn beat Missouri in September 2017.

While the ConFLiCT didn’t exist when Coach Bob Diaco started at UConn in 2014, the two teams played some close games before UConn moved out of the American in 2018. Athletic director Bobby Valentine stated that he was “elated” to have a national audience check out his UConn football team this weekend - the game will be played in primetime on NBC in accordance with TV contracts signed last year, while Wisconsin-Michigan will get the ABC game.

The ConFLiCT is at the top of the Week 4 slate, right before teams start to focus on in-conference matchups. UConn holds a 3-2 series lead all-time and opened as a 4 point favorite.

                              A Hard Day’s Knight

Jordan Brown implodes on national stage, UConn can’t stop Knights ground game as CAC Turley, UCF score upset in hostile Hartford

Defensive tackle Damien Bryndale celebrates after one of UCF’s many defensive stops on the evening.

Houston (LEFT) and Holt (RIGHT) torched UConn on the ground en route to the upset.

It’s an accomplishment to come out of the Loudest House in the East alive. It’s a completely different accomplishment to come out with a win over the occupants.

First year head coach Connor Turley (user: convict38) became the first CAC member to defeat UConn as his #12 UCF Knights rode a stellar run offense (254 yards in total) and a snarling secondary (six turnovers), to a 30-24 victory on Saturday night. In what will be called an upset by many, the Knights reclaim the Civil ConFLiCT trophy, tying the head-to-head series at three apiece.

With a very poor game all the way around, UConn’s national title defense took a big hit as they fall to 3-1 on the young season. Entering a bye week, they are now faced with many looming and unexpected questions with the ACC slate ahead. Their red-hot offense was stopped cold as Jordan Brown threw five interceptions, the run game was shaky, and UConn never led in the contest. From the beginning to the end, it was all UCF, a rarity on UConn’s nearly unwinnable Rentschler Field.

Despite throwing an interception on their first drive, the first of many UConn mistakes helped the Knights get the ball back and take control from the beginning. J.P. Byers ran for a first down, but the gain was negated by a Jylan Sowell holding call, and then Patrick Miller came back with a sack on the third down retry to force a punt. The Knights then sprinted out to a 14-0 lead after star QB Aaron Houston connected with A.J. McDonald on a fourth-and-goal, then ran in a touchdown on an option read from two yards out on the next drive.

UConn was able to get on the board with an Anthony Ricciardi field goal and then pulled back within striking distance with freshman Linzell Tyson’s triple option team in the game. On the option, Tyson handed off to fellow freshman Ashanti Swift, who proceeded to rip off a 59 yard touchdown run, capped with a tremendous block in space from Korey Davis-Love. Swift ran untouched to pull UConn within 14-10.

The triple option team had the most success - Swift ripped off a long touchdown and Tyson nearly did the same.

That would be the high point for the UConn offense, however. Jordan Brown, after a sensational opening three games that generated Heisman buzz, flamed out in an epic way on Saturday. He turned the ball over six times in total, drastically stalling a UConn offense that had looked invincible at times in previous weeks. With two prime chances to score late in the second quarter, Brown turned the ball over both times - on a fumble forced and recovered by all-AAC lineman Mike Walden, and then an interception by safety Alex Skinner, an ill-advised decision as the pass was fired deep into double coverage and tipped around before being intercepted. Instead, UCF tacked on a field goal before the half, making a 17-10 score in favor of the visitors.

Mike Walden (#8) not only sacked Jordan Brown and forced the fumble, but stuck a paw on the football to recover as well.

The second half followed the same script as the first. Many chances for UConn, but no reward for their efforts. UConn’s only offensive score was with Tyson’s option team in - Tyson broke off a 50 yard run to enter the red zone before Byers cleaned up for a short touchdown. UConn put together only one score over seven drives in the second half.

Despite the poor offensive effort, though, the defense stepped up and made stops to keep the game close. Adam Holt broke in the only offensive touchdown for UCF in the second half, and down ten late in the fourth quarter, Kent Newton intercepted Houston for a second time, running it back for a touchdown the other way to draw the game to 27-24. UCF once again couldn’t score on the ensuing possession, meaning that UConn had a chance to take the lead late with lots of momentum.

However, their efforts would fall short as Chamarkelle Byrom couldn’t hang on to a fourth down pass from Brown, and then after holding the Knights to a Chris Garcia field goal, Brown added to his golden sombrero by throwing interception number five, simply trying to force the issue with a deep pass to Byrom. With all of their timeouts exhausted, Maurice Rice’s robbery sealed up the road upset for UCF.

A montage of misery for UConn. The Knights picked off Jordan Brown five times - here by Alex Skinner (LEFT, CENTER), and Bryan Phillips (RIGHT). Maurice Rice and Keith Salas also recorded interceptions.

An elated Coach Turley was mostly humble in an on-field interview after the game. Speaking about his gameplan, the Texan noted "we run a lot of principles that Oregon and Chip Kelly innovated; spread option type stuff that works well for Aaron [Houston]. I know UConn has struggled defending that style of offense in the past so I knew we had a great shot. Credit to them for a great game, and our guys for playing tough and making them uncomfortable. Great game and can't wait to beat them again next time!" It should be worth noting that the two teams will play again at some point in the next two years, this time in Orlando.

Brown was very quiet in his post-game interview, clearly shouldering the blame for the loss. He failed to pass for a touchdown, and only passed 18 times due to his ineffective play. Byers failed to run for 100 yards again. Star receivers Byrom and Lonte' Speier combined for just one catch.

Coach Stephen Belichick, his usual placid self, stated that “we need to play better”, a truth considering that UConn was nearly run out of their own building. They had no answer on the ground for Houston, 128 yards on 33 carries, and Holt, 126 yards on 18 carries. Unheralded defenders such as Keith Salas and Bryan Phillips (a sack and interception apiece) imposed their will. Their offensive line was exposed as well thanks UCF’s heavy pressure. The Knights’ defensive front tallied six turnovers on five interceptions and a fumble as well as six sacks. It took about a year and a half, but someone finally figured out how to beat UConn - interestingly enough, it was one of our own CAC members.

“We’re looking to Virginia Tech, but we have a bye to straighten things out first”, commented Belichick. The beauty of college football is that a week can change everything. For his sake, to avoid another game like the atrocity UConn fans endured on Saturday, he better get things straight. Otherwise, if the offense continues to limp along and the line gets abused as it was tonight, UConn could be in for a long stretch of ACC games.

Kent Newton deserves a game ball for his efforts with two picks and a touchdown, but ultimately couldn’t do enough.

Great to be back, Mike, thanks for the kind words. I enjoyed playing this game despite the loss and hopefully I can get back to playing sort of regularly again, at least for a few weeks. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the rest of the season plays out.

It's still a small sample size, but there certainly is a lot to like from WMU so far. Don't forget you've got a veteran, experienced quarterback in Travis Kelly as well, so getting the run game going early in the season opens up your offense. Poor defense has plagued other CAC members in the past, so hopefully everything lines up for you guys and you can have a good season. I really want to see more of you guys moving up soon so I can play you guys (and lose, in all likelihood ).
