My boy Cutler receiving player of the week honors? I’m liking that, even if he’s on the opposite side of the ball from what I coach. As a Bears fan, it’s weird giving someone named Cutler praise #feelsgoodman
Great game for us indeed, nice confidence boost headed into the second half after a shaky first six games. I always seem to load up our out of conference schedule, and this year was no exception - Iowa turned out to be a fringe top 25 team, Vandy nearly beat us, and then UCF actually did - I'm happy to have salvaged a 5-1 record so far, as I truthfully thought we were going to lose to Virginia Tech.

The only two games that I think could give us trouble until championship week are Syracuse up next with their option attack and the big game in November against Notre Dame.. hopefully we don't get caught looking too far ahead, and I don't think this team is as good as last year's (or the 2020 team, even) but we're still in great shape to make another playoff run. The next few weeks serve as chances to help increase Jordan's confidence under center and patch up the offensive line, so here's hoping we can take advantage and work out the kinks.

It must feel nice for outside readers such as yourself to know your CAC won before the weekly update - I can only imagine your conflicting views on the Cutler situation, though. Maybe you consider this as one of those "even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while" type moments.

I wish you luck against Barry Odom's Boy-Z State Broncos next week.. beat that guy up good!

Good bounce back so far from the loss, a playoff spot could still be on the line and maybe a return trip to the title game. There's plently to play for this season still.
Contrarily, I've been a big fan of the new UConn uniforms since day one... I don't mind the helmets at all. Sometimes, like with Ohio State for example, simple is better. Interesting that you're the second person (after RoundingThird) to gripe about that, but I can certainly understand your viewpoint. You'll be heartened to know that in 2015 (I believe) UConn updated their uniforms in real life with a nice big husky on the side.

We're still very much in the thick of this playoff race, for sure. Undefeated teams happened with frequency in the early years of the dynasty but not so much lately. If we can run the table, we'll get in with no debate. And while the schedule does lighten up in the second half with a few conference bottom feeders (Louisville, BC, Wake Forest, Virginia), we've still got Notre Dame in November and Syracuse next week - the Orange now run the option and have a really good team top to bottom. They're also coming off an upset win over Wazzu last week and sit at 4-2; they're no pushover.

I'll repost the story I wrote last season when the pre-game goes up but it's been well documented that I've had a lot of struggles against the spread option and the triple option. Easy to say that next week could very well be a toss-up game, especially as they have a large home-field advantage.

Thanks to the both of you for your comments! Things have been dead around the boards the last couple of weeks so I'm glad to see you check in. And we wait for the fall....

An Oral History of Me and Defending the Triple Option

Bryan Cook during his time at Georgia Southern.

I am, in effect, reposting an article I wrote last season right before we played Syracuse. For longtime followers, it has been well documented that I struggle to defend the option for some reason. Perhaps it's because I rely on man and zone defenses and don't blitz as much as I should. Perhaps I am just too aggressive and allow big plays as a result. Whatever the reason, the option has been a major achilles heel for us in the nine seasons of this dynasty.

While we had to deal with Army and Navy annually when we were in the AAC (Seasons 1-4), we were fortunate enough to avoid playing an option team every year until we moved to the ACC before last season. While Paul Johnson is still kicking at Georgia Tech with his triple option, there's a new problem we face in that another team has implemented that style of offense. That team is this week's opponent, Syracuse. Their head coach Bryan Cook was the offensive coordinator for several years at Georgia Tech, and took the offense with him when he was hired at Syracuse in 2020. While we managed to beat both Syracuse and Georgia Tech (ACC Title Game) last season, those games have never been easy.

My combined record against Army and Navy is… 1-4. Army dealt us L’s in both of Bob Diaco’s first two seasons, while Navy drilled us in 2015 and 2016 before we finally beat them in 2017 prior to leaving the AAC at the end of that year. We haven’t faced either team since then.

However, did I ever get a scare when later in 2017, we took on a winless Cincinnati team coached by Ted Roof.. also a former Georgia Tech coach and alum.. Also a user of the triple option. Though Cincy would finish just 3-9, the Bearcats damn near ended UConn’s perfect season and possible playoff hopes in a narrow overtime game that ended with UConn barely hanging on for survival. More recently, if you want to get really technical, Oregon whupped us two years ago in the CFP Title Game with a zone/read option style offense. We managed to go 3-0 to wrap up last season with the aforementioned wins against 'Cuse, Tech and an Oregon rematch in the Orange Bowl (if you want to get really technical). However, we did lose to UCF earlier this year, who apply similar option principles as Oregon. We gave up 200 yards of rush offense and generally looked clueless at times, a bad harbinger for a game like this. As a result, my record against the option and similar offenses is 6-6.

Syracuse scares the you-know-what out of me as they have a thumping fullback and two very talented running backs, including true freshman Kornelius Kimmel. Quarterback Tyronn Weber is capable under center, despite being a first-year starter. They have a very good defense, especially up front, where we've struggled in recent weeks. If we thought Pitt was going to be tough last week, I think Syracuse will be tougher. It never gets easier facing the option, after all. We'll see you back here soon to find out how the game went.

It's unfortunate as 35 points typically is enough to win -- bad defense has sadly been a shortcoming for many CAC careers to this point. Even so, I think your Minutemen have improved a lot this season. Contending for wins in year one is a big accomplishment, and I think the future is pretty bright. Hang in there!

Spread your d-line and linebackers, make them beat you up the middle through the heart of the defense. That’s always been my strategy to stopping the option, and it’s worked for the most part

            (7) 38 --- 6-1 (4-0)

            23 --- 4-3 (2-2)

            Dome Sweet Dome

UConn wins in Carrier Dome for second straight year, staves off Syracuse in hard fought game; Byers exits with upper-body injury

UConn came up with a lot of defense late, sending heavy pressure on Ty Weber before Vic Castalanetta intercepted him, ruining the Orange’s chances.

With UConn nursing a 28-23 lead as the third quarter wound down, Jordan Brown took a snap under center near midfield, did a five-step drop and scanned the field. One of his talented sophomore wide receivers, Chamarkelle Byrom, was wide open a few yards past the first down marker, exploiting a Syracuse zone that had played a little too deep. Byrom picked up a block on the right side from his other talented sophomore receiver, Lonte’ Speier, and Byrom was gone. The 48-yard touchdown connection gave UConn a 35-23 advantage at the end of the third quarter.

Byrom’s score helped put away a tough Syracuse team en route to a 38-23 win, as the offenses went stagnant in the fourth quarter. Syracuse was certainly no pushover and played like a top 25 team for most of the game, as UConn trailed for much of the first half and only put the game away with a series of stops late. Nevertheless, UConn showed a lot of mettle in their win, asserting themselves as a contender in the ACC, perhaps a co-favorite to return the ACC Title Game along with Notre Dame, Miami, Pitt and Virginia Tech. With several Huskies leaving the contest hurt, J.P. Byers among the most notable, we will see how much they are affected by the carnage of a hard fought, blue collared battle.

UConn’s gameplan against the option was to make Syracuse uncomfortable, and they clearly succeeded as the Orange were less than stellar. Tyronn Weber passed only sixteen times and actually ran for negative yardage. However, three Larry Ager field goals, a Mikel Gibson touchdown run and several defensive stands kept Syracuse in the game, trailing by one score as late as the third quarter.

Syracuse wasn’t stellar on offense, but got ran with power and were able to hang around. Brandon Reid (LEFT) ran through Tory Greening for a score, while Kornelius Kimmel (RIGHT) tried to do the same. Kimmel, a true freshman, will be a big part of their offense soon.

If UConn was any worse on offense, they might have lost the game. However, quarterback Jordan Brown was able to string together a few big plays that shifted the momentum, and ultimately the result, of the game. On one play a minute before halftime, Marcus Rodgers split a seam and beat a safety over the top for a diving 36-yard touchdown catch.

Additionally, following a 58 yard field goal try and miss from Ager, Brown threw three quick first down passes before connecting with Speier for a touchdown and eight point lead. In a span of two minutes before the half, UConn had gone from six down to eight up. That outburst would be vital in the final tally, as UConn only managed two touchdowns in the second half, and just three points in the fourth quarter.

Marcus Rodgers has electrifying speed, and his diving grab helped swing the momentum in UConn’s favor right before halftime.

While Syracuse scared us entering the contest by virtue of their option offense, no one in particular stood out for the Orange. Appearing to be a decent manager of an option offense, Weber did run for negative yardage and looked very skittish in the pocket, while star running back Gibson and freshman sensation Kornelius Kimmel did not receive many chances. Fullbacks Edmond Johnson, the game’s leading rusher, and Brandon Reid looked sharp at times, but neither was able to take over. Marvin Daniel was Syracuse’s primary target through the air, but only had two catches in the second half. The UConn defense did just enough to pull out the win this time, much to the delight (or so we think) of coach Stephen Belichick. “We’re continuing to play well. We sent out the right formations all day.”

With Coach Belichick and defensive coordinator Don Pellum’s defense shifting to more multiple packages by the week, UConn utilized an array of 3-4 blitzes to optimize matchups against Syracuse’s bigger runners. “They did a great job preparing for us”, commented Orange head coach Bryan Cook, who sees his team fall to 4-3 with the loss.

What makes the defensive performance all the more impressive is that several key UConn players left the game with minor bumps and bruises at certain points. Defensive end Kiel Hughes left with a sore elbow, while Jevon Sapp was knocked out with concussion-like symptoms. These circumstances allowed youngsters, such as freshman Avan Goulding (first career sack), to see valuable minutes. Everyone should be ready to go next week, but injuries are always concerning.

It certainly didn’t hurt for UConn that they put on another solid performance on offense - through the air, at least. Jordan Brown was very efficient with only four incompletions to go with a 285-yard, three touchdown performance. The running game and the offensive line continued to struggle, however. UConn failed to have a runner cross the 100-yard plateau, lost Byers to an upper-body injury in the third quarter (we’ll learn more in the coming days about his status), and the line gave up another four sacks, primarily from the porous right side. Star edge rusher C.J. Hynes recorded nine stops, four for loss, and two sacks, while tackle Larry Baker chipped in a pair of sacks as well.

“At some point something has to change”, commented Belichick, very matter-of-factly.

Even so, UConn looked impressive for the second straight week, and now returns home at 6-1, 4-0 in ACC play to face a mid-level team in Boston College. This year’s matchup will mark the fourth time the two teams have met in the dynasty’s nine seasons. BC has played well against tougher teams on their schedule, but sit at just 2-4 this season.

Lonte’ and Chamarkelle continue their stellar careers with sensational touchdown catches.

That's essentially what we did, luckily! The multiple looks we threw out there as well as the blitzes led them up the middle, and though we weren't able to stop them completely, no one player dominated like we saw in the UCF game, and we came away on top. Moral victories!

Running back Byers (collarbone) out for season

UConn has been dealt a massive blow in their efforts to repeat as national champions. Starting running back J.P. Byers left last Saturday’s contest against Syracuse with an undisclosed upper body injury and did not return. Unfortunately, the diagnosis was a broken collarbone, meaning that will be the last time we see the redshirt junior in a UConn uniform this season, and maybe forever.

Byers was having a subpar 2022 after a stellar second half of 2021, in which he and Luke Williamson both ran for 100 yards in four consecutive games at one point; Byers finished just shy of 1000 yards. Coming into 2022 as the feature back, Byers could never get going behind a struggling offensive line while dealing with other minor injuries that ended days early. Byers will finish the season with just 110 carries for 456 yards and just two touchdowns.

The 6’2, 234 pound Oklahoma native is perhaps the most talented back skills-wise that we have had in the nine seasons of this dynasty. However, he has a lengthy injury history that has prevented him from realizing his full potential. Byers missed most of his redshirt freshman season with a torn pectoral, coming back just in time for the CFP to fill in for a banged-up Luke Williamson. While he made it through 2021 without a major injury, he has dealt with additional elbow and ankle issues this fall.

With a second major injury in a span of three years, as well as a deep and young backfield currently at UConn, I would not be surprised to see Byers jump to the NFL this offseason. Doing so would allow Byers to get paid without the risk of getting hurt again and ending his career early. Byers has stated that he will finish out the school year and make a decision by the spring semester; he is slated to graduate in May, making him eligible to utilize a grad transfer as well. Should he return for his senior year, though, Byers would be the starter again in all likelihood, unless Ashanti Swift impresses down the stretch.

“We’re really disappointed, but we’ve got a lot of young kids behind him who are ready to go”, commented quarterback Jordan Brown. “Next man up. Simple as that”, added coach Stephen Belichick.

True freshman Ashanti Swift will assume the starting role in Byers’ absence. Byers’ classmate Mike Molden will take over Swift’s spell back role, while redshirt freshmen Jonathan Shaffer and Scottie Phillips will see the field more regularly for the rest of the season.

                  ------------------------------------

CB Barnett (Abdominal) out against BC; LB Sapp (concussion-like symptoms), DE Hughes (elbow) good to go

After losing a number of players to injuries against Syracuse, UConn is going to feel the effects as they play Boston College this weekend. Beginning in the back end, starting cornerback Sam Barnett has been diagnosed with a small abdominal tear and will be held out at least through this weekend. He is targeting a return against Virginia, following UConn’s second bye next weekend. Barnett, much like Byers, has had a lengthy injury history. He has suffered two known concussions in his career, notably missing last season’s contest against Notre Dame, and now has another upper body injury to contend with.

“I’ll be fine”, commented Barnett with a smile. “As long as I’m there at the end of the season, everything will be alright". Redshirt sophomore Tory Greening will start in his place. The Michigan native has come on strong as of late, recording two interceptions in the last three games. Aaron Brook will start in the nickel position this week.

On the more positive side, star linebacker Jevon Sapp and defensive end Kiel Hughes will be available and will start this week. Sapp left early against Syracuse with concussion-like symptoms. He was checked, treated and cleared to play, being told that he was not concussed, just woozy after a collision with fullback Edmond Johnson. He was held out as a precaution. Hughes, meanwhile, suffered a deep bruise near his elbow that removed him from commission late in the fourth quarter last week. He said he “feels fine” and will be ready to go come Saturday. The redshirt sophomore from Tolleson, Arizona is second on the team with five sacks so far this season.

                  ------------------------------------

UConn lands first three commits of 2023 class

After a slow start to the recruiting season, coach Stephen Belichick has landed his first pieces of the 2023 recruiting class by dipping back to the well and expanding his pull.

Continuing the strong New Jersey pipeline UConn has built, center Deontay Bumbury from Union is the first commit. The sixteenth ranked center in the ‘23 class from the same town as Shav Wade, Bumbury is a bit undersized at 6’1, 275 pounds. However, center is a massive need for UConn with senior Lawron Leak set to graduate this year and with no obvious replacement currently on the roster. Bumbury could compete for a starting job immediately, but ideally he sits a year and continues to develop his tackling and field awareness.

                  Bumbury (66 OVR, 52 SPD, 93 ACC, 72 STR, 76 PBK, 73 RBK, 69 IBK)

UConn has also continued to strengthen their linebacking group with the commitment of inside ‘backer Kerdarius Barber from North Carolina. A friend of Jevon Sapp, Barber is a great athlete who may need to grow up fast and play immediately for UConn. If the current depth chart stays as is, Barber will likely be the first man off the bench behind Kion East and Marshawn Dortch next fall. Ideally, Barber gets to sit a year while the coaches help him develop technically. Until then, however, there is little denying his athleticism, obviously a welcome addition to the UConn defense.

                  Barber (70 OVR, 82 SPD, 75 STR, 87 ACC, 69 TAK, 77 HPW, 72 PUR, 73 PRC, 76 BSH, 78 PMV/FMV, 70 ZCV)

Finally, one of the other big needs UConn was hoping to address was defensive end, and they have begun to do so with the commitment of Florida native Quayshaun Wise, a four-star prospect. At 6’5, 255 pounds, Wise will likely stay at defensive end, unlike other prospects UConn is recruiting that may need to move to linebacker.

                  Wise (74 OVR, 76 SPD, 85 ACC, 77 STR, 78 PMV, 73 FMV, 75 BSH, 77 TAK/HPW, 76 PRC)

                  WELCOME HUSKIES!

                  Top Targets Commit Elsewhere

UConn’s high end recruits on the board did not end up committing, sadly. Five star running back Darren Allen officially committed to Wisconsin this weekend, while athlete O.J. Orr, also from the New Jersey pipeline, committed to Penn State.

While UConn did land Barber, another linebacker prospect is going elsewhere. Kennard Young from Natchitoches, Louisiana committed to Northwestern, while California athlete Martin Core III will be going to Indiana, oddly enough. We wish them the best moving forward.

We will talk more about recruiting next week during our bye week; if you want to read more about recruiting, check out the last recruiting update here!

I'm so jealous that you can hack-in a Playoff bracket in this game. Sucks to see your starting RB go down, but that's the type of in-season adversity that we all crave in these reports. It keeps things challenging.

Great looking dynasty man and I plan to try to start following along more.

The Battle for New England: Part IV

                      Guru's Thoughts

Given that BC is one of my two favorite teams, it has certainly been awkward rolling over them the last two seasons. However, things are a little different this time around, and more so than just BC hiring Jeff Jagodzinski as OC, the man they cut loose out of anger in 2008. The Eagles fired head coach (and former UConn coordinator) Mike Cummings at the end of last season and hired Dino Babers from Nebraska. Babers has instituted a high-powered passing offense revolving around senior quarterback Jason Drizianni, who has been extremely efficient this season.

UConn opened as a three touchdown favorite, and should win this game. Despite that, UConn's poor pass defense numbers and BC's good pass offense numbers (plus efficient quarterback) make for an interesting matchup; the three touchdowns might even seem a little generous as you look closer. BC also has two stud corners in Westover and Royal to guard our two talented sophomores in Speier and Byrom. You could say that BC matches up much better with UConn than several other teams have of late. BC has also played well in their bigger games, managing to beat Ohio State in the Shoe earlier this season. Given the environment and UConn's top ten ranking, I am certain that BC will bring their "A" game.

However, there is a reason that this team is 2-4 and lost to Maine earlier this season; they are extremely inconsistent. Today, they are also down their top two offensive linemen and backup running back. I think we need to be careful as this is our rival and they'll be motivated after two straight blowouts in this series, but this is a team we should be able to wear down and beat for the third straight year.

                      Series History

2018: In a low scoring affair, defense ruled as the Huskies improved to 4-0 in their national title defense; James Atkins led the way with a then-school record five sacks.

2020: UConn started to look like a national title contender as Luke Williamson ran for five touchdowns in a blowout of BC to win for the second time in two tries in the Diaco era. Relive the game here!

2021: UConn continued to dominate the series as the Huskies only gave up 3 points all day long. Isaac Jackson did a great job distributing the ball as five different receivers caught touchdowns and UConn cruised to victory, a win that would set off UConn's ten-game tear en route to last season's national title.

Nice to see you back here Geezy, thanks for the kind comments! I agree, it's always great to see updates out the veteran reports from you, Cheese, Lop, Helli and a few others here, and, along with you, I hope to get back to regularly commenting again soon.

The playoff has added unimaginable depth to my dynasty, and an all-new level of enjoyment in watching scores and news from across the nation. I feel a lot more connected to every team and its players as a result of closely watching the top 25 and playoff race, which makes me enjoy this project even more.

Unfortunately, the only deviation from real life is that very few teams seem to run the table in the regular season in '14. As a result, the most recent playoff featured a pair of two-loss teams (including us); I can recall about four seasons ago that Ohio State got into my playoff with three losses and won the whole thing. Truthfully, I'm jealous of your results in '11 with multiple undefeated teams at the end of each season, ideal conditions for a playoff!

Luckily, I think we're on track to finally get the cream of the crop in the playoff this year; Ole Miss and Oklahoma are still undefeated, there are some very good teams in the Pac-12/Big Ten and don't forget about us and Notre Dame atop the ACC!

For us, I honestly think that Byers' loss could be a blessing in disguise. Hellisan asked at the start of the season why I kept Ashanti Swift active instead of applying a redshirt and this is why - Swift has already played a lot and is now going to get, at minimum, a five-game tryout to show he can be a feature back for us. He's already been playing more than our other younger guys and I think Byers (91 overall) will turn pro this year given his injury history and skill set. Therefore, it's better we test out Swift now. Additionally, neither have been extremely impressive this season, so I think Swift can easily match, if not surpass, Byers' modest production.

Even so, Byers is a veteran presence who we will miss considerably on a young offense overall. Barnett's absence on defense this week could be big too, as he's now a three year starter and a leader in the back. His replacement, Tory Greening, has played well but has not been tested much on the outside. BC certainly matches up with us well, so hopefully our young guys can step up!

                      Thanks again Geezy!

                        TABLES TURNED

After two blowouts in two years, Boston College changes the narrative of Battle for New England series with stunning upset of UConn at home; Drizianni flawless under center in upset; Questionable coaching decisions, mistakes and poor play on both ends doom UConn

Jason Drizianni is the heart and soul of Boston College, and his leadership and abilities shone in every way in the upset.

The Battle for New England is no longer a battle: It’s an all-out war.

When Lonte’ Speier went down at the five yard line following a fifty yard catch and run, UConn trailing by a touchdown with four seconds to go and no timeouts, the Huskies had a shot to hurry to the line and tie the game, either with a no huddle play, or a spike to get set up. However, with one last folly in a day filled with miscues, it was only fitting that Jordan Brown couldn’t get a snap off before the clock hit zeroes. Those round numbers symbolized a poor, empty day for the UConn football team, one that leaves a rivalry forever changed and a promising season in ruin.

Despite being down three key players on offense, Boston College looked ready to play from the jump, and the motivated Eagles scored a 30-23 upset over the sixth-ranked Huskies in the loudest house in the East. Senior quarterback Jason Drizianni led the charge, completing a sizzling 39 of his 45 passes for 345 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, showing how badly UConn missed senior corner Sam Barnett in the back end. BC also made sure they won in a team effort, as six receivers caught five or more passes and each unit on defense made a critical stop at one point or another.

The score remained close throughout the first half as both teams struggled to score. Drizianni connected with Josh Dotson for the game’s first touchdown, a leaping grab that saw the receiver slip past Tony Rush, another misadventure in the secondary for the junior safety. Eagles kicker Anthony Camamaros would later miss a pair of 50-yard field goals, while UConn’s sophomore kicker Anthony Ricciardi missed a long-distance try as well. Ricciardi’s miss is concerning as the freshman All-American a year ago went 1-for-3 again today and has now missed five of his last eight tries.

Josh Dotson maneuvers around Tony Rush for the game’s opening touchdown. Is it time for a change at free safety with the wildly inconsistent Rush?

Though UConn held a 14-13 lead at the half after touchdown passes to Chamarkelle Byrom and Marcus Rodgers, BC got the ball after the break and promptly engineered a long touchdown drive, culminating in a fullback dive from Shelton Herman to give the Eagles the lead. After a failed two-point try and a 48 yard field goal from Camamaros, BC soon had a 22-14 lead.

UConn answered with an Ashanti Swift touchdown (with Linzell Tyson’s triple option offense on the field), and though they missed a two point try as well, Ricciardi would finally connect for a field goal to give UConn a 23-22 lead early in the fourth quarter.

UConn’s running game, led by Swift (LEFT) and Tyson (RIGHT) had ups and downs on the day - Tyson recorded his first 100-yard game, but Swift struggled to gain good yardage.

Despite the lead and momentum, UConn would begin to fall apart completely after that. Though Jordan Brown did not throw an interception in the contest, the offense struggled to move downfield with him under center. Excluding his pass to Speier at the end of the contest, Brown completed just nine passes for 125 yards on the day. As a result, Belichick left in Tyson and the triple option shotgun offense for much of the fourth quarter in a vain attempt to capitalize on the productive group. The move mostly backfired, as though Tyson was able to move the ball downfield, UConn mustered just three points in the fourth quarter. The biggest disappointment was when Tyson threw an interception to Michael Phillips while in Ricciardi’s field goal range, and then another drive petered out to give BC another chance to retake the lead.

This time, the Eagles would capitalize. Despite almost losing a Greg Jones fumble, the Eagles somehow managed to recover and march downfield 70 yards. To take the lead, Drizianni connected with Herman through the air this time for a four-yard score. Dotson caught the two-point try to give the Eagles a 30-23 lead with time running down.

Unheralded fullback Shelton Herman scored twice for the Eagles in critical goal-line situations.

With Jordan Brown back in the game at this point, UConn still managed to turn the ball over on downs, star corner Cade Westover making a tremendous pass breakup on fourth down to end the threat. UConn would get one more shot, however, as Mike Hill (team-leading fifteen tackles) and James Mandrell (three sacks) keyed a stop and watched Camamaros’ sixth field goal attempt of the day sail off the crossbar and out.

Jordan got the drive started off well with an eleven yard scramble, and then Speier beat Brad Royal in coverage, made the catch on a C-Route and began sprinting down the sideline. As the sophomore pulled away, it looked briefly as if he was about to take the pass all the way for a miraculous, game-tying touchdown with no time left. However, Speier was instead dragged down from behind by a group led by Westover at the five yard line with four seconds to go and no timeouts to use. Trying to hurry his troops to the line, the last folly finally ended UConn’s misery, as the Huskies couldn’t get a snap off against the Eagles defense. A stunned Property crowd had witnessed UConn lose at home for the second time this season.

A motivated Boston College team made a number of tremendous stops in the fourth quarter: Corner Cade Westover and safety Donald Nicholson (LEFT) helped bring down Lonte’ Speier from behind on what would be the game’s last play, while Westover (RIGHT) also broke up a fourth down pass attempt.

Coach Belichick was vague on his coaching decisions in the fourth quarter, notably leaving Tyson in the game at quarterback for most of the fourth quarter over Jordan Brown. However, we were given no reason to believe that Brown was removed for anything other than a decision to best help UConn win today, and we should expect him to remain the starter when UConn takes the field again.

Much as Barnett was sorely missed against a veteran Drizianni, it was clear that UConn’s offense missed running back J.P. Byers as well, ruled out for the season last week after suffering a broken collarbone. While extra talented with a high ceiling, freshman Ashanti Swift has not quite looked the part of a feature running back yet, as he only ran for 62 yards and a 3.8 yards per carry average. Naturally, the struggles of the backs makes the offense more one-sided. Tyson did crack 100 yards for the first time in his career and looks like the most dangerous runner on the roster right now. However, he is needed in emergencies at cornerback and cannot play every down on offense.

Elsewhere, the offensive line struggled once again, as the Eagles tallied eleven tackles for loss and four total sacks. Sophomore nose tackle LaRontae Wessel led the way with four TFL's and a sack, while three other Eagles recorded a QB takedown. The UConn defense looked lost and had a hard time stopping basic screens to Jones and the read option that Drizianni employed a few times in the third quarter; it should be noted that Drizianni is not the most fleet afoot.

However, if there is any positive about the poor play of UConn today, it’s that they are off next weekend to try and straighten up some shortcomings in practice. Further, Sam Barnett should be able to return next weekend to get the defense back at full strength before travelling to 2-6 Virginia in two weeks. For the defending champs, however, it is entirely possible that their run is ending as they fall to 6-2 as the calendar shifts to November.

For BC, however, it’s all smiles for a team that plays better than their record. They fairly and soundly beat UConn. Drizianni looked elated on the sideline, giving out hugs to teammates as the Eagles celebrated at midfield after the game. "I've never doubted our talent", he said. "We came in with nothing to lose and the results showed exactly that".

“I faced UConn twice with Nebraska”, noted first-year head coach Dino Babers, the offensive coordinator at Nebraska up until last year. “It’s so sweet to finally get the best of them this time”.

Chamarkelle Byrom continues to make dazzling plays, but couldn’t do enough this time.

Really balanced offensive yardage in that one. The completion percentage for both quarterbacks was pretty terrible though, even if Brown did throw 2 touchdown passes. All hope is not lost though. A trip to the ACC title game is still in reach

Spot on analysis; Tyson's legs were really the only effective way for us to move the ball, and I tried to capitalize, as he's been running very well lately. You saw firsthand the dangers of relying on two freshmen, though. In hindsight, I should have had more confidence in Jordan in the fourth quarter, but there is no guarantee that he would have been able to close it out. Times like these we really miss Ice-Jax....

While I think we're out of the CFP race now, the ACC is still in reach as you mentioned, this being our first conference loss. However, I think we started looking ahead too much and it bit us, we don't look like an ACC winning team right now. Of course we have the showdown with Notre Dame coming up, a game I actually think we'll lose, but Wake Forest is getting better and Louisville gave us a good game last year. I bet that we come back in two weeks focused and regrouped.

                                UConn Bye Week News/Notes

FS Rush benched; Brook to get start vs. Virginia

Rush in action Week 1 vs. Iowa - missing two tackles.

Sources close to the UConn coaching staff have told the Hartford Courant that UConn is benching starting free safety Tony Rush for at least next weekend against Virginia. Taking his place will be redshirt sophomore Aaron Brook. According to the Courant, the staff has had enough of Rush’s inconsistency at safety, missing tackles or making a poor play in coverage. Last week, Rush got over-aggressive when battling for a jump ball with Boston College receiver Josh Dotson, and that allowed Dotson to score the game’s opening touchdown. Further, Rush has become a punchline in the dynasty for regularly missing tackles on both running backs at the second level or receivers.

The 84-overall redshirt junior from Glenview, Illinois was a former four-star recruit and top-ranked safety upon committing to UConn in the fall of 2018. However, Rush has not panned out as the star UConn thought they had uncovered. Rush has been spectacular at times, noteworthy a touchdown saving interception in last year’s national title game, but a liability at others, due to his propensity for freelancing. Rush has recorded 37 tackles and an interception this year, coming in the opener against Iowa. He had 60 stops and one interception last year.

The sources state that Brook’s insertion into the lineup is a tryout, and if he performs well, we may see this change become permanent. Brook, from New Jersey, has recorded 19 tackles and two interceptions this year playing primarily in nickel and dime packages.

CB Barnett out against Virginia; Cooke to get time at nickel

Coming off an abdominal tear that held him out of the Boston College loss last week, senior cornerback Sam Barnett has been ruled out again for next week’s contest against Virginia. The Wisconsin native had stated that he would try to come back as soon as possible, but is reportedly still experiencing pain, leading Coach Belichick to hold him out again. Barnett told the media this week that sitting against Virginia is a “minor setback” but hopes to be playing again when UConn travels to Louisville in two weeks.

Typically one of the most reliable players on defense, the three-year starter has endured a disappointing senior season so far, recording 25 tackles and no interceptions while being outshone by classmate Kent Newton, the team leader with four interceptions.

Tory Greening will once again start in Barnett’s place, and with Aaron Brook promoted to starting free safety this week, redshirt freshman Kelvin Cooke and true freshman Linzell Tyson will get snaps in nickel and dime looks.

                                Recruiting; Four New Commits

Now that we are in UConn’s second bye week, we’ll take another look at recruiting for the 2023 class. In the past week, UConn had landed four more commitments into their class with early signing day just over a month away.

The Huskies’ latest haul is highlighted by a pair of defensive ends and a pair of receivers.

Starting on defense, UConn continues to add to their defensive front haul with commitments from New Jersey natives Andre Cwik (4*) and Eric Reddick (3*).

Continuing onto the receivers, UConn received hard commits from wide receiver John Pratt and tight end Evan Jeppesen this week. Pratt has great hands and receiving ability to go with a 6-foot-4 frame, while Jeppesen has no major weaknesses in his game, instead simply needing more bulk.

Offensive coordinator Bill Cubit spoke about his two new pieces: “The nice thing is that we don’t need either to contribute immediately, which is nice for guys who come from far away like John and Evan. They can take the time, get adjusted and learn our system. We think John has the hands and skill to be a top option in the pass game very soon. And with Evan, he brings the balanced tight end skill set that we’ve been lacking for a long time and we think he can play for us real soon. Pratt has caught 50 passes for 889 yards and 12 scores for league-leading Lufkin High this year, while Jeppesen is a two-time all-state selection.

Looking at the depth chart, Cubit is spot-on in his assessment of the depth chart. Pratt will almost certainly not start next year with every receiver currently on the roster having at least one more year of eligibility. Even so, Pratt will be afforded every opportunity to see the field early as many of UConn's past projects at wideout (notably Drew Talley, Marcus Rodgers, Collin Miranda) have been limited contributors.

Jeppesen is in a similar position. Even though UConn does have three tight ends on the roster, only Alex Paige is reliable enough to see the field right now. Though it's not necessary for Jeppesen to play immediately, he will get every opportunity to do so. Paige has done an admirable job in his first year at tight end, but is not known for his blocking and that means Jeppesen could step in to take reps in short yardage, blocking sets assuming that no one else commits.

                                ------------------------------------------------------------------

Looking further down the board, UConn is beginning to make final pushes before the December signing period ends.

                                NEW ADDS

Notably, UConn has added two new defensive back prospects to the board: JUCO athlete Ahmir Rider and Michigan cornerback D’Vaughn Bates. Bates is a three-star prospect with a potentially high ceiling; he was also an all-state corner last year and has five interceptions so far as a senior.

Rider, a junior, is someone who can win a starting cornerback job on day one, which is nice as one outside corner spot will be up for grabs, as will the nickel spot. Despite being just a slight 5-foot-9 and 195 pounds, Rider is a good athlete with a good skill set. Currently playing both corner and running back at Lakeland CC near Kirtland, Ohio, he has recorded 500 rushing yards, four interceptions and a kick return touchdown this fall.

Bates is favoring UConn over Big 10 schools Michigan State, Wisconsin, Purdue and Texas A&M, and could commit soon. Rider has begun to favor UConn over Wisconsin, Ohio State and Nebraska.

Defensive end Demetris Sands, a four-star Maryland prospect, is another new add to the board. He has the typical eastern big name schools on his board (Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame), but has not received a lot of interest yet. Sands projects as a 79 overall prospect who is a better pass rusher than athlete. He could fight for a rotation spot next year with James Mandrell graduating and several youngsters unproven.

                                COMMITTED ELSEWHERE/LOCKED OUT

Last week we mentioned the commitments of many of the others on our board, including five-star running back Darren Allen to Wisconsin. Texas native LeShaun Shatner, a three-star corner has elected to stay home and committed to Texas A&M.

Three-star corner Marquice Lenon, a favorite of UConn staffers, has committed to Maryland. UConn looked to be back in the race after Lenon suddenly dropped Boston College from his list, but Lenon ended any hope for us very quickly by committing to UMD a few days later.

                                TIGHT RACES

Other noteworthy battles include the top one on UConn’s board, Mississippi four-star linebacker Payton Ash, whom we are in a VERY tight race for with BYU, Ole Miss, TCU and Florida. While we do trail, the aim of the game is to stay in this race and if we can make it to the offseason, you know we will go all-in.

As I’ve mentioned in earlier updates, Ash is a player who is a must-have for a UConn defense that is looking toward the future and stockpiling young talent; while we like Avan Goulding and Colorado transfer Marlon Bush, Ash is by far the best prospect of the three. Defensive coordinator Don Pellum considers him a “great athlete with lots of room to grow” - Ash is preliminarily rated to have 81 speed, 91 acceleration, and 80+ tackling and coverage attributes. Ash is also capable of moving down to the edge with ease. His versatility would be a very welcome addition to a defense that's getting younger very soon.

Four-star offensive tackle Cole Monroe, a potential day one starter who seems to be a tailor-made replacement at left tackle, is leaning UConn over Maryland and Temple. This race is also likely to stretch into the offseason as the three teams are within 1,000 points of each other and Monroe has visited each campus already.

Florida blocking tight end Tate McCall, who would figure into the tight end rotation along with Jeppesen, is also considering UConn in a tight race with Ole Miss, Oregon, Nebraska and Texas State. All five schools are also within 1,000 points of each other, and the race should stretch deep into the offseason. Unlike Jeppesen, a “balanced” tight end, blocking is McCall’s bread and butter and we can easily see a platoon scenario in two-three years where Jeppesen is the pass catcher and McCall the run blocker.

Athlete Rondell Downs, a four-star guy from Georgia, has narrowed his list between North Carolina and UConn with very little separation between the two. This one could also go to the offseason. Downs projects a bit like Linzell Tyson, a quarterback/defensive back type with a strong arm and lots of athleticism. He does everything well on both ends of the ball and could wind up a starting safety in the near future.
