What to watch in MJ comeback

What to watch in MJ comeback

    October 1st, 2001 | by cbssports.com

Beginning with Day One of the NBA season, the spotlight will be on the Wizards -- um, on Michael Jordan -- pretty much every night. Of course, that should surprise nobody since MJ has been in the news the last few months as a retired athlete anyway.

A Wizards team that won 19 games a year ago, with precious few of them noteworthy for any reason, will have plenty of games to watch this season. However, as of now, most people won't get to see that many of them. So far NBC, TBS and TNT have scheduled a grand total of one Wiz game for national TV (Nov. 28), though we suspect the total will change.

But of the 82 games the Wiz are scheduled to play, here are some to watch specifically.

Oct 18, vs. Philadelphia: Well you can be certain there won't be any available tickets for this one, MJ's first game back from retirement and officially his first home game ever outside Chicago. Not only is this the most interesting home game in Wiz history, we'll get to see how much Michael wants to chase after the quickest guy around, Allen Iverson.

Oct. 25, at L.A. Lakers: Kobe Bryant and the two-time defending Lakers may not expect a tough game, but they'll be circling it on the calendar regardless. Bryant has made comments in the past that he's the next MJ in terms of his ability and marketability. Now we'll see them play each other.

Nov. 5, at Toronto: Oh, Canada, think the NBA world begins and ends with Vince Carter? Get a load of another North Carolina product, one who has won something. And unlike the big matchups with Philly, the Raptors' star will likely match up with MJ.

Nov. 25, vs. Portland: We didn't pick this one for the big Jahidi White-Dale Davis matchup. It's time for Michael and his ol' pal Scottie Pippen to join hands and sign a song. Don't look for an Isiah-Magic kiss.

Nov. 29, at Philadelphia: Michael brings his talent to Philly this time, and another match-up with the 76ers and Iverson. Things will be starting to shape up in the Eastern Conference at this stage, so expect a tough match-up once again.

Dec. 4, at Utah: Well, Bryon Russell is still around, so maybe he and MJ can re-enact what we all thought was the final shot of a great career. Jazz fans are classy, but even they probably have some anger at the guy who made sure Karl Malone and John Stockton never won a championship.

Dec 25, vs. Celtics: Well we may have to wait until the following week for Jordan to face the Bulls for the first time again, but this fixture was a late change this week. The Wizards will feature on Christmas day for the first time since... ever? Jordan vs Pierce should provide us with some ferocious moments, and both teams hope to be in the thick of the playoff race at this stage.

Dec. 31, vs. Chicago: When they made the schedule, a match-up of the East's two worst teams seemed like a dud for New Years Eve. And while it still might be, Michael would surely like to embarrass the Bulls, even though there's nobody from his day on the team. Plus, rumors are that Ron Artest, a top defender, was constantly matched up on MJ this summer.

Feb. 10, at Chicago: Just an ordinary Saturday night? When MJ enters this building, he'll see his jersey hanging from the rafters. What kind of reception will he get from a town that must be crushed to see him in another uniform? Probably a nicer one than Jerry Krause will get on this night.

Feb. 14, at New York: Well the schedule maker clearly had no idea Jordan would come back. It's a long time to wait for MJ to grace the Garden again, where MJ has had some of his most memorable games. There's a TBS doubleheader that night featuring Iverson-Garnett and Rasheed-Shaq, but look for many sneak peaks on this one.

Apr. 1, at Chicago: So what if we've been through this once already. Every time Michael comes home it will be a big event.

Lots of story lines for your upcoming season ... does Jordan still have what it takes to compete with the younger generation of Kobe/VC/Pierce? We're soon to find out.

We will see! It's the supporting cast I have my doubt's about. Have played a few warm-up games with the roster and intra-squad scrimmages. There are some people with very poor hands.... and others that can't hit a contesed shot. Yikes... There is a lot of work to do, and learning how to play with a slower MJ is going to be challenging too. Still deciding whether to go with player lock or control the whole team...

Finalizing the contracts for season 2 and 3 on all players then i'm ready to go.

So 99 percent finished on roster and setup. I'm going to be playing this on player lock with Jordan. Learning the plays now and it gives a more realistic feel for the story this way. Totally up to the roster to step up for Jordan!

Man, you're putting alot of faith in those players. I mean, you're basically setting up the season as Jordan himself set it up -- I'll do it all if I need to, which was always his mentality and only Phil Jackson really convinced him to trust in others at critical times.

Young Rip, very young Kwame, and Ty Lue? Let's hope the sim engine is kind.

Yep, well I am going to write a review of the game post match from Jordan, so best to feel his frustrations first hand! I think it will make it easier to write. Have ran a few practice games and scrimmages so have a feel for what I can and can't do!

Updated presentation on my earlier posts, looks a lot cleaner and like web page now.

                Game 1 - 76ers vs Wizards

Jordan leads the way with 44, but 76ers win behind Iverson's 36

                October 18th, 2001 | by NBA.COM

Its official, Jordan is back, and he has picked up where he left off. Jordan took the 76ers and Matt Harpring for 44 points tonight. Outdueling Allen Iverson's 36 points. The 76ers however where the better team on the night and pulled out the win.

The first two quarters were an extremely tight affair with the Wizards leading 58-57 heading into half time. Jordan was scorching in the first half hitting 22 points. But the rest of the Wizards too often stood around and watched Jordan take over. Jordan ended up shooting 32 shots, and incredible number. The only other player to attempt double figure shots was Patrick Ewing with 13.

On the other side Iverson had Derrick Coleman backing him up as they went to battle wit Jordan. Iverson kept the scoreboard ticking, as Rip Hamilton and Tyronn Lue struggled to contain him. Coleman and Mutombo owned the glass grabbing 29 rebounds between them. The 76ers moved the ball well and really played as a team, something the Wizards could not say.

Christian Laettner hit double figures for the Wiz, along with Ewing. Rip Hamilton was inconsistent, and will need to learn how to play off Jordan. 6 shots is far too few. However the 76ers are the favorite for the Eastern Conference title this year. The Pacers won the East last season, but they have lost a little depth. Iverson's 16 point 4th quarter was enough to take the 76ers out of sight in the end.

"I shot the ball 32 times, tonight was too much about me, this won't work. I need to do a better job of getting everyone involved. Tonight's loss is on me." Said the returning Michael Jordan. He's certainly right, he may not have a great supporting cast, but he has to use them more than this.

                  Game 2 - Pistons v Wizards

Wizards power home with win over Pistons.

                  October 20th, 2001 | by NBA.COM

Win #1 for Jordan and the Wizards in 2001-02. And it was a very comfortable victory in the end. Jordan was much more efficient tonight, and got some great backup from his teammates. Hamilton, Laettner, Ewing and Chris Mullin all scored in double figures.

The Wizards seem to have learned a big lesson from their loss to the 76ers. Share the ball and good things will happen. It's not just the Michael Jordan show in Washington, and it seems like the Wizards realised that tonight. Jordan still top scored with 24, but on 10-16 shooting with 6 assists, it was a much more balanced performance.

Yes it's paragraph three before we mention the Pistons. And for good reason. they were awful. Corliss Williamson got it in his mind to have a battle with Jordan. And you can tell it didn't go too well. It kept the Pistons from getting a rhythm, and Jerry Stackhouse struggled to shrug off Rip Hamilton. Hamilton's defense was much better tonight, and has sown the seeds of a becoming a solid perimeter defender.

The Wizards were only up 50-39 at half time, but they came out even stronger early in the 2nd half. Jordan only needed to play 32 minutes tonight which was a real positive. A real negative though has been Kwame Brown who is yet to score a basket in the NBA. in 20 minutes playing time, Brown has 4 rebounds and 3 assists total. He's only attempted 1 shot though. It'll take time with Brown, and Patrick Ewing has been leading by example so far as his primary teacher. 0 turnovers so far is a positive.

The Wizards face the Nuggets next, and they will look to take the same mentality into that game. "Much better all around performance tonight, we shared the ball, and worked hard on defense. This is the blueprint for success." Jordan was buoyant afterwards and Hi-5ing his teammates.

                    Game 3 Wizards @ Nuggets

Nick Van Exel leads Nuggets over Wizards.

                    October 23rd, 2001 | by NBA.COM

Nick Van Exel rolled back the years tonight and lead the Nuggets to an unexpected win. James Posey and Voshon Lenard played the role of Jordan tamers tonight, and both did a respectable job. Jordan was held to 16 points on 7-13 shooting. Playing only 29 minutes, his impact was a lot smaller than the opening 2 games.

Tim Hardaway and Juwan Howard also hit 22 points each. Howard the former Wizard was determined to show Jordan just what he gave up at last year's trade deadline. Howard was effective with 7 rebounds and 2 assists. He played well off Van Exel and Hardaway. The Nuggets were without star player Antonio McDyess tonight (Strained Ankle), but what that did was allow Juwan Howard to play some time at the center. The Nuggets played a faster style and shot a massive 29 three pointers in the game and hit 13 of them. The Wizards had no answer for the ball movement and shooting tonight.

Christian Laettner led the challenge though, and a double-double of 20 and 10 was impressive. Rip Hamilton was MIA again, and Courtney Alexander had to try and shoot the Wizards back in to contention. The Wizards shot a total of 12 three pointers, and this was the biggest difference between the two teams. The Wizards couldn't get much scoring going in the post apart from Laettner, who shot a number of long two's.

Another game dropped for the Wizards, and Coach Collins has a lot to think about. The Starting 5 of Whitney, Hamilton, Jordan, Laettner and Ewing is not really working, so something needs to change.

"We got ran of the floor tonight on defense. The Nuggets moved the ball really well, and we just stood and watched. We have to step it up." Jordan was a frustrated figure as often he was first man back on fastbreaks. Not a good sign when you are the oldest player on the team.

                      Game 4 - Wizards @ Lakers

Lakers edge out Wizards as Kobe and Jordan score 28 each.

                      October 25th, 2001 | by NBA.COM

Michael Jordan and Phil Jackson faced off tonight for the first time in Los Angeles. Kobe and Jordan also faced off, and what a duel it was. Basket for basket, drive for drive, Kobe matched Jordan in every way, offense and defense. However Kobe has Shaq helping him, Jordan had... Kwame Brown? Brown was outstanding tonight, with 13 rebounds, 5 points and 3 assists, but of course it was no match for Shaq who had 24 points and 8 rebounds.

The Wizards may have discovered something new tonight though. Down by 14 at half time, the Wizards won the last two quarters. This turnaround was facilitated by a lineup change. Kwame Brown was inserted at center instead of Ewing and White, and Chris Mullin played at power forward instead of Laettner. The Wizards tried to copy the style the Nuggets played in their last match, and played with an athletic center, and 4 guards/wings around him.

The Wizards ran pick and roll with Brown, and kicked the ball out to the perimeter where, Jordan (6-9 from three), Hamilton (4-10 from three) and Mullin (3-4 from three) reigned terror on the Lakers. Jackson and the Lakers had no answer, and struggled to keep up with the Wizards. In the end the Lakers superior squad won out, as every one of their bench players put points on the board.

Brown's performance was a highlight, and he could give the Wizards another option down low. Ewing and White tried to body up O' Neal but to no avail. Perhaps Brown can earn a few more minutes in the rotation going forward. Another position that has caused problems has been at the point, with Chris Whitney and Tyronn Lue being very ineffective so far. Derek Fisher is a tough matchup though, and his shooting keeps defense honest.

The Lakers roll on, and in search of another championship ring. Usually they look infallable, but in the second half the Wizards showed the rest of the league, their may be a method to trouble them. "We made some lineup changes in the second half tonight, with Mully at the 4 and Kwame at the 5. We were athletic and shot the ball well, the Nuggets may have given us a blueprint for how to change things up." said Jordan afterwards as he walked over and gave Brown a big hug. Brown was seen focused chatting with Jordan and Ewing all night, things could be looking up for the #1 draft pick.

I like that lineup change -- Mullin can definitely play a small-ball 4, but in this era he has his hands full with some of the bigs (I shudder to see him matched up against the likes of Karl Malone). Kwame starting over Ewing isn't surprising, but this early in the season? I fear we could be witnessing a repeat of what happened IRL there ... Jordan's thirst for winning is legendary.

Yea its not a change to the line-up yet, just a minutes increase for both. It's tough to find guys to make shots and plays with. So the minutes could fluctuate quite a bit! Trade rumors and league round up will come in a few games...😉

                            Game 5 - Wizards @ Warriors

Richardson's 52 not enough to stop Wizards and Kwame.

                            October 27th, 2001 | by NBA.COM

In what was almost a battle of two of the top 5 rookies, Jason Richardson showed Jordan and the Wizards that maybe they should have taken him #1 overall instead of Kwame Brown. Richardson was dominant in good ways and in bad. The good, 52 points, the bad, 42 shots to score that. Richardson's dominance on the ball meant the Warriors never got a flow going.

Richardson was playing with a point to prove tonight, and along the way turned Antawn Jamison and Danny Fortson into role players. There could be a little trouble in the camp if Richardson continues to shoot like rookie Jordan. Jordan was solid tonight with 28 points on 12-18 shooting. He ended up having to guard Richardson in the 2nd half, but even Jordan couldn't slow Richardson on his drives to the basket where he threw down some explosive dunk's.

The Wizards #1 pick was however not to be completely outdone. Brown had a perfect night. A double- double of 24 pts and 12 rebounds, including 4 blocks and 2 assists. But what was most impressive was his 12-12 shooting. Or rather 12-12 layups and dunks. His efficiency was insane, and showed Richardson that's it quality not quantity that win's in the NBA.

Jordan and Rip Hamilton ran a lot of pick and roll's with Brown, who finished lobs, and rebounded well after misses. Importantly for the Wizards though, Whitney and Lue amassed 22 assists between them tonight. Finally some production from the PG spot. They used Brown and Ewing well in pick and pops or rolls.

The Warriors were a one man band, while the Wizards were a well oiled machined, with old spare parts like Chris Mullin shooting the light's out from the corners, hitting on 8-12 three pointers. A massive throwback performance from Mully who took advantage of the space Brown and Ewing were creating inside. Neither Danny Fortson or Troy Murphy wanted to follow Mullin to the corners, and in the end it cost the Warriors.

Jordan was mightily impressed by his teammates again tonight. "What a game for Kwame tonight. This is why we drafted him. We saw the potential, the chaos he can cause when he rolling to the rim. Mully was reeling in the years tonight, he showed why he is regarded as one of the best shooters ever. Way to get the win against a very good young team." Coach Collins was asked whether Brown and Mulin would now start, he said, "Not just yet. Christian and Patrick really set the tone for us, we have a great rotation and we like Kwame and Chris' energy of the bench. We have a deep team."

Lordy, Jason Richardson got UP for that game. The man would not be stopped ... too bad his best teammate was Troy Murphy.

MJ's young group looks to be coming together. Ewing had a great game, that's the kind of night you want to see from the veteran.

Yea shocked at how poor Jamison played... Richardson was a nightmare to stop, I just couldn't, speed and acceleration must be around 90. Jordan's speed is around 75!

Yea Ewing was solid, few really nice turnaround bank shots, tough on the boards too. Frontline of Ewing and Brown is solid, Brown at PF has a little bit of speed and an OK mid range shot, two big's with midrange works well for spacing and Laettner has that range too.
