My custom speed ratings for NHL 19

Hi guys I found offline play in 18 to be very slow and sluggish so along with maxing the attribute effect slider I decided to revamp most players speed to match their real life counterparts to the best of my abilities. These ratings are based on a combination of what I’ve seen on tv, heard through media and heard from other fans so they are imperfect, but it definitely improved the pace of my offline games.

There are about 246 players with enhanced speed so check out your favourite team on the list below and let me know who is rated too high or too low for your liking or who should be included that I already haven’t. I’m open to all the feedback I can get! So with that the players are listed under their teams and their ratings are next to them.

Re: My custom speed ratings for NHL 19

This is pretty much a copy and paste from my thread about this on hf boards so if you’d like to check it out there as well by all means do so. I figured I could get some more feedback here so I decided to move it over here

There are a few guys on my list that I’d like opinions on specifically and they are Matthews,Pastrnark , Scheifele, Giroux, Jeff Carter, Huberdeau, Josh Bailey, Nugent-Hopkins ,Ryan Strome, Zuccarello, Buchnevich, Vlasic and Chris Tanev.

All of those guy I recall as not being slow, but I also I can’t remember them being extremely fast either or at the very least speed isn’t a skill that they’re well known for so they could be overrated or underrated. Anyway if you guys know anything about the skating of these players then please reply to me. It would be much appreciated

I notice Jake Virtanen isn't on the list, he is actually quite speedy, he posted a 13.471 time at the Canucks skills comp. McDavid's record is 13.31

He’s not? Let me check he should be. Nope he’s not I must have forgot him. I’m actually a Canucks fan so I am well aware of his speed. I’ll add him now I feel he is around a 93-94 so fastest on the Canucks and one of 29 players in the game with speed above 92.

These are fantastic! I was looking for something like this a little while ago. Speed is hard to rate for every player because it’s not a statistic. Rating players in things like passing and shooting is easy because I base them on goals and assists.

If roster sharing ever comes back, or if they put the game on PC, then I would love your help with the Revamped Rosters.

Thanks, I’d definitely be up to helping out. I’ve spend a lot of time editing players and creating historical rosters so I have enough patience to rate the players the way You want them. I just need parameters set in place to do so.
For example my parameters for skating for NHL players are this.
            93-99 elite
            90-92 way above average
            88-89 above average
            84-87 average
            77-83 blow average

I calculated the other day that about 34% of my league have 90+ speed which I think is reasonable with how the game is played today.
I’m always adjusting the skating attributes of players in this game because as you stated it is a difficult thing to judge at times.

I’m often relying heavily on scouting reports and word of mouth from fans. I use my own eye test as well, but that comes last as my eyes can tend to deceive me.

Since you’re a Philly fan how would you rate Giroux? Is 90 speed too high or about right? He is a guy I’m often going back and forth on as I’ve heard various different accounts on his skating. P.S if you don’t mind I might ta a look at your revamped roster and see how you rate each players speed. It might be good me for comparison sake.

I have actually been using a lot of your suggestions, just making slight tweaks. Basically I’ve been bumping some of the players down a point or two.

As for G, with your ratings spread I would probably put him in the “above average” category at an 88 or 89. He’s not slow, but speed isn’t really his game. He has unreal hands and agility.

I would probably bump Couturier down a bit too. Skating really isn’t his strong suit.

Good to see my list was of use to you.I also have a prospects skating list that includes prospects from 2014 to 2021 if you’d like to see it. I agree about him being an 89 instead of 90 so I will bump him down by a point. I was also unsure about Couturier as well so thanks for letting me know I’ll bump him down to I’m thinking an 86.

One guy I’ve been struggling with is Laine I believe you have his speed at 83 while I have him at 90 which admittedly I think is too high however he is a hard player to rate for me because while he is an awkward skater who is not the most agile he does have good enough speed to beat Horvat in a race at the skills competition. As a Canucks fan I’d say Bo is one of are 3 fastest players and has improved his skating massively since he was in the Juniors so for Laine to beat him he has to have at least good speed. What is your take on his skating?.

That 83 was a bit old. He has improved his skating since joining the NHL. According to TheHockeyNews, his acceleration could use some work. I would make his speed higher than his acceleration.

Could be interesting this year with the new skating system. Maybe the ratings differences for speed and accel will be more noticeable.

I’m hoping the attributes will be felt more in 19 as well, but just in case I will usually play with attribute effects on 10/10. If they are felt more I might have to make some adjustments to my ratings and sliders for 19. An interesting player to test 19 with would be PK Subban who I gave an 86 speed with an 94 agility. He should have average speed, but also exceptional edgework.

Good work, not knowing other teams as much as I used to these seem accurate if I base it on what you suggested for the Habs.

Only one missing for me for Montreal is Petry. He is a great skater. I bumped him up to 91. Matthew Peca should be up there also judging from the intra-squad game.

As far as Agility and Acceleration go I’m usually just ballparking it with them. Agility and acceleration are usually at about an 87-91 depending on the player as I assume if a player has elite speed they are more likely to be adequate or more than adequate in other aspects of skating.

There are exceptions though like most notably Subban and Laine. Laine has great straight line speed at a 90 , but has an 86 acceleration and an 87 agility while Subban has elite edgework with a 94 agility, but has average speed and acceleration at 86 each. These are based off of the many descriptions I’ve heard of them as skaters so yes there are differences between the 3 skating attributes depending on the player if I know there is, but for the most part there is some guesswork that is involved.

As far as an update I have successfully moved these ratings over to NHL 19 and while doing so trimmed some fat by about 12-15 borderline players off the list just to see. I play on full sim with attribute effects on 10/10 and game speed at 4/6 which takes EA’s weights off the players while also preventing it from getting too arcade like . I have to say this is NHL game runs the smoothest out of all of them and the difference between players like Chara( 78 speed) and Mcdavid (99 speed) is night and day on these settings.
