Re: The Alaska Warriors Reboot

Year 2 - Weeks 2 & 3

Vs. Akron

If there's one thing you need to know about college football, it's that there are no guarantees. You can never assume you know a team after one week of football, and I myself fell in to that black hole. I was riding high after that week 1 victory over the country's number 5 team, but reality hit very hard against Akron.

It was a wild game, extremely high scoring. The talk coming in was about Akron's running game, but their passing game was the story here. Alaska simply couldn't stop anything.

Jared Martinez became the first person in Alaska history to return a kick for a touchdown, and Gerren Davis had a 98 yard pick six. But Akron was throwing it all over the field. Andy Jenkins at half was 23/37 for 324 yards, while receiver Cliff Bryant had 9 receptions for 162 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first half.

Alaska struggled to get Akron off the field on third downs. Akron won the time of possession battle, which is crazy considering they were a no-huddle tempo team. Also, RB Darrin Pierre tore a pectoral muscle and will be out possibly for the rest of the year.

At #25 Iowa

In what Alaska hoped would be a bounce-back game, this game was all but that. It started off with a 100 yard kickoff return for Iowa and they never really looked back.

OC Jamie Montgomery was made available to the media following the game and he had some choice words for his unit:

"Our jobs are to put the players in the best position to succeed. I felt like we had a good shot today. I felt like our gameplan was solid and the play calls were solid. It's just hard, man. Like, you look at the game and you see that we moved the ball well, but every time we started to gain momentum, we turned the ball over or committed a penalty. Jeremy has to be better. He's been our best option because we haven't seen the accuracy out of our other guys. But when he's in there, it's hard to trust or know which Jeremy we're going to get."

Coach Hardaway was visibly annoyed when he learned of his OC's comments:

"We're working hard every day out there. Our kids are putting in the same time and the same effort as every other school out there. It's a hard pill to swallow when you lose like this, but those kinds of comments aren't something I want to hear coming from our coaches. He and I will have a discussion and that will be that."

When asked about the quarterback play, he had this to say:

"We're going to work on some things this week and start making some decisions. If any are made, you'll see it on the field. That's all I'm going to say."

It's been a rough go for Jeremy Riggs in his career. He threw more than 20 interceptions last year, and has thrown 8 in the last two games, including a team record of 5 in the game today. He also set a record for attempts and completions in this game.

Is there some dissension beginning to build in the Alaska locker room?

Runningback Josh Roberson was injured in this game and will miss the next 4 weeks. Third-string RB Quincy Outlaw will get the start in his place.
