Rock Chalk, Jayhawk! | Maize's Kansas Dynasty

    NCAA 2007 on PS2 - Idaho (DC)
NCAA 2008 on PS2 - Kent State (DC), Michigan (MM)
NCAA 2009 on PS2 - New Mexico State (MM)
NCAA 2010 on PS2 - Notre Dame (OS)
    NCAA 2011 on PS3 - Kent State (OS/VSN/DSS)
    NCAA 2012 on PS3 - UCLA (DSS)
    NCAA 2013 on PS3 - Duke (DSS), Kentucky (VSN/DSS)
NCAA 2014 on PS3 - UNLV (SS/OS), Eastern Michigan (OS)
    NCAA (14) 2015 on PS3 - Michigan (OS)
    NCAA (14) 2018 on PS3 - UMass (OS)
    NCAA (14) 2019 on PS3 - Kansas (OS)

Now that we are halfway through the college football season, I've decided to change directions for my next dynasty. What I've always loved about NCAA 14 is rebuilding programs and building dynasties from the ground-up. After getting a sense of the 2018 football season, it made sense that I change teams.

While I love Texas Tech, I was struggling to connect and come up with additional storylines. I was also concerned that it might be too easy to build up the program. That's not the problem at Kansas. Kansas is one of the worst Power 5 conference programs in college football.

I fondly remember those scrappy Mark Mangino teams, the Orange Bowl appearance, and the descent that followed - back to the basement of the Big XII. The program has become a laughing stock. A new Athletic Director probably means changes are in store for the program this offseason.

The nice thing about staying in the Big XII is that I can keep the realignment and conference expansion storylines. As always, my focus will be on writing on realism. I think the roster project this year in incredible, so I want to do my best to create a realistic rebuilding project at Kansas.

    Dynasty Information
    Platform: Playstation 3
    Gameplay Level: Heisman
    Quarter Length: 8 Minutes
Sliders: Boss Hawg's (Check out his Youtube Channel)
Rosters: NCAA Football 14: 2018-19 Roster Update
Scheduling: Realism is the key. I will try to stick to the future schedule and also stick to how they usually schedule games for any holes in the schedule.
Redshirts: I am allowed to redshirt true freshmen, transfers, and back-up skill position players. I only redshirt 5 players per season, although some players will not play and will be redshirted but available to use.
    Recruiting: All-American Level
In-Season Updates: Top 25 and Heisman watch will be updated every week. Individual statistics will be updated after the first five games, after the tenth game, then after the final game of the season. Conference standings will be updated after eight games and then at the end of the season.
In-Game: Choose one of the selected "Ask the Coach" plays on First and Second Down. Then on third down, I am on my own. Try to create realistic statistics, so bring in back-ups if the game gets out of reach. Adjust sliders after every four games if needed. I will also simulate 3-4 games per season to help create realistic season stats.

          Feel free to post!

My plan right now is to sim until the final five games of the season. They might not be the exact same five games in real life, but that will give me a good starting point. I'll make sure to match the team's record in real life. Expect the first game posted on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Before that, I'll have an article on the beginning of the season and one on David Beaty, his buyout and the new AD Jeff Long.

Comcast to Buy ‘Majority’ of Fox Sports Regional Networks
It seems the final domino is about to fall in Disney's reported purchase of 21st Century Fox assets. Over the past year, Disney and Comcast entered into a bidding war for the rights to a package of Fox-owned entertainment assets including FX, multiple film production companies and a controlling stake in Hulu.

After Disney's initial bid and Comcast's counter, Disney went all-in and offered over 70 billion. The US Department of Justice accepted the $71.4 billion dollar sale, with one exception. Disney could not acquire the 22 Fox Sports Regional channels. This would create an "anti-competitive conflict," with Disney owning ESPN and then taking a larger ownership in the rights to live sporting events.

Disney agreed to the terms, going forward with the sale and then looked for a buyer for the regional sports channels. Those channels, including the YES! Network in New York, have exclusive deals with many sports franchises to carry live sporting events.

Disney, after maneuvering around Comcast for the deal with Fox, has now partnered with Comcast to sell them a majority of the Fox Sports Regional Networks. The deal will not be finalized until after the new year. This will also give the regional networks, and their partners, a chance to begin a transition plan for their networks and programming.

This acquisition was leaked after information came out about the sale of the YES Network. When the Yankees sold a controlling interest of their own network to Fox; they include a clause that triggered a buyback if Fox sold their regional sports networks.

When the Disney deal was finalized, the New York Yankees began negotiating to buy full control of the YES Network. YES, besides being home to all Yankees games, also features the Brooklyn Nets and New York City FC games on its network. The network was valued at $4.5 billion dollars, easily the most valued regional sports network in the United States.

The Yankees agreed to buy 80% of the YES Network, paying $3.6 billion for the 80% that was once owned by Fox. They in turn sold their 20% stake to the Alibaba Group, the company owned by Joseph Tsai, the minority owner of the Brooklyn Nets.

This deal now leaves 21 Fox Sports Regionals to be sold, with Comcast expected to purchase a large majority of the remaining regional networks. Comcast already operates seven regional sports networks, branded under NBC Sports. Those networks were originally established as Comcast SportsNet. Yet following Comcast's purchase of NBC Universal, the networks were rebranded. The same rebranding is expected to be done with the networks Comcast is purchasing from Disney.

This acquisition of regional sports networks by Comcast could have an impact on the next round of media deals by leagues, sports franchises, and even college sports conferences. Comcast is pushing NBC Sports to become a bigger player in live sporting events. This billion-dollar deal will have a major effect on the sports media landscape for the next decade.

Looks good. I'll follow from the start! I just started a new dynasty and I put Kansas in the C-USA.

Between 1906 and 2010, Kansas and Nebraska played every year - 105 straight games. It started just a year before the current longest continuous rivalry between Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Nebraska holds the all-time series record, winning 91 of the 117 games played between the two schools. That includes the win streak from 1969 through 2004. Since 2004, Kansas won two of the six games played between the schools. The rivalry came to an end when Nebraska joined the Big Ten Conference.

The scheduled games in 2023 and 2024 also fill Kansas' future non-conference games for the next six seasons. Each season, Kansas will play two home games, traveling to a FBS school each season.

AD Long: No Decision on Beaty Until After the Season
New Kansas Athletic Director Jeff Long has not often commented on the coaching situation for the football program. While it's been a main topic of conversation since Long took the job in Lawrence, he has been hush. For the most part, that's been understandable given that he's new to the job and the football season had just started.

Head Coach David Beaty knew this season was make-or-break for him and his coaching staff. Even after signing a contract extension (that runs through 2021), playing for a new boss brought some added pressure. That, combined with a 3-33 record definitely put pressure on this season for Coach Beaty.

The season started horribly, with a loss to an FCS opponent. It seemed Kansas football had finally bottomed out. Then, the team recovered and won their next two games. A 2-1 start, positive production from Beaty recruits, and there were some people coming to Beaty's defense.

Yet, just as it looked that the program had turned the corner, they cratered again. Kansas started Big XII play with four straight losses, now taking their overall record to 2-5. Now, with only five games left on the season, it seems it would take a miracle to turn the season around.

David Beaty did make a major change during this current losing streak. He fired Offensive Coordinator Doug Meacham, deciding to take a more "hands-on" approach with the offense. It doesn't look like that has made an impact. Kansas will likely be double-digit underdogs in their remaining games this season.

Jeff Long made an appearance at the Big XII's Media Day before the start of the men's basketball season. He was pressed by members of the media regarding his football coach, and that's when he made his statement:

"I'm not willing to make some change right now. This staff is working, these players are working hard... we aren't doing anything right now... I'm definitely disappointed by the way the season is going. But, there's still time to make this season a success. Either way, I'll be reviewing and making a decision at the end of the season."

It seems David Beaty has five games to make a better impression with his new Athletic Director. If Beaty is terminated, Long might also try to negotiate the terms of his buyout. Beaty's current contract states that he would be owed a $3 million buyout if he is fired anytime over the next three years. That buyout only drops during its' final year: in that case, he would just be owed the remainder of his final year's salary.

These final five games will serve as a final exam for Head Coach David Beaty. Right now, his tenure lines up with the worst years in Kansas football's history. In his first season, he coached the team to its first winless season since 1954. In his second, the team won their first (and last) conference game against Texas.

Now, in his fourth season, it's been about breaking losing streaks. A road win in September broke the program's streak of consecutive road losses at 46. It also broke a streak of 12 straight losses to FBS opponents. Kansas is still shouldering a consecutive conference road loss streak. That record, now up to 41 straight, dates back to Kansas' last Big XII road win: October 4, 2008 versus Iowa State.

The problems with the Kansas football program is likely bigger than David Beaty. Yet in four seasons, he has only proven that he cannot alleviate some of the issues. Instead, he's become a bigger part of the problem. If Beaty cannot show signs of improvement over the next five games... Athletic Director Jeff Long will be faced with his first major coaching hire at Kansas.

AT&T Sportsnet Buys Four Fox Sports Regionals
The current sale and split of the Fox Sport regional channels continued with the news that AT&T Sportsnet made a major purchase and expansion of their own inventory of regional sports channels. Previously, AT&T Sports Networks and Fox Sports had a programming agreement to broadcast national content. Now, AT&T takes over full ownership of the content on their regional sports channels.

Beyond the purchased content, AT&T purchased Fox Sports Prime Ticket, West, San Diego and Arizona. The purchase of those four regional networks will be finalized over the next year. They will be rebranded under the AT&T Sportsnet branding. AT&T finalized this purchase for a reported $5.1 billion.

The purchase expands AT&T Sportnet's viewership by adding markets out west. It also gives AT&T full control over the content and distribution rights, likely reaching 12 million more cable and satellite subscribers.

AT&T Sportsnet currently owns and operates four regional sports networks: Pittsburgh, Northwest, Southwest and Rocky Mountain. Like other regional sports channels, the rights to live sporting events is the main attraction.

By adding Prime Ticket and West, AT&T taps into the Los Angeles market with coverage of the Clippers, Angels, Rams, and the LA Kings and Anaheim Ducks of the NHL. San Diego brings the Padres and continued expansion into Southern California. Arizona features every major sports franchise in the state, giving AT&T a much larger inventory of live sporting events.

It's expected that AT&T will rebrand the new networks but also restructure the entirety of their regional sports networks. They could bundle them as a cable, satellite or streaming package, offering access to all eight regional networks.

Comcast has reportedly bought the majority of the Fox Sports Regional networks. After the surprising price tag AT&T paid, Comcast might still be negotiating the final price. These moves make AT&T and Comcast competitors with ESPN in the war for live sporting events. Comcast is also expected to 'rebrand and restructure,' all in preparation for the next major dominos in the sports media landscape to fall.

I've finally started playing games! I took a lot of time to get the rosters updated so they were at least playable in a dynasty. For some of the teams that were not finished, that meant quick updates. I also went through all of the Big XII rosters closely and switched them a bit so they were dynasty ready.

Also, for an added wrinkle, I added a few "Graduate Transfer" players that will be available to teams next season. They're on new rosters, but aren't listed on the depth chart. Those are players like Kelly Bryant, Jalen McCleskey, Manny Bowen, etc.

I should have my first game recap posted tomorrow!

So, with a bit of playing and simming, I've gone through the first nine games of the season. Our record is 3-6, with the three wins matching what Kansas has done this season. They lost the opener to an FCS team (FCS Midwest in the game). Won their next two non-conference games against bad FBS teams. Then, the usual beatdowns in the Big XII. Except, they were able to beat TCU 10-7! This was a game I actually simmed, trying to get to the end of the season to focus on the final games. So, it's just like Kansas in real life.

                            Here are the results:
                            vs. Nicholls St. - L 7-14
                            @ Rice - W 24-14
                            vs. Louisiana Tech - W 33-28
                            vs. Texas Tech - L 9-38
                            @ TCU - W 10-7
                            vs. Oklahoma - L 13-30
                            vs. Baylor - L 17-38
                            vs. Texas - L 24-42
                            @ West Virginia - L 17-38

Remaining Games: vs. Oklahoma St., @ Iowa St., @ Kansas St.

I'll post Oklahoma State soon, plus the Top 25 after that.
