In my league at the end of the season I had players where it said renounce or cap hold. Can someone tell me what they mean and thank you

If you renounce them then you are releasing them; along with their contracts (clearing more cap space).
If you keep them on cap hold; you can hold off until the end of the 3 day offer period to sign them (provided you have enough left over after signing other players)....if they're in cap hold...sometimes others can attempt to sign them...but YOU will have the final chance (being that they're on your team).
