If wanted to play a last-gen Madden game, I should buy...

Let's say I'm getting a bit fatigued with the latest versions of Madden since M15 on the Xbox One. If wanted to rev up my old Xbox 360 and buy one of the old Madden games, which one should I pick up?

I'm a coach mode player who loves football sim and deep franchise modes (why I loved Head Coach 09 for years), but also appreciates solid, balanced game play (with realistic stats). Yes, the latest Maddens are slick and have some cool features, but as EA keeps looking for the next marketable features, the game has lost something for me.

Based on reading various posts, it seems Madden 12 still gets a lot of love. But I was also surprised to hear a few folks still enjoying Madden 07, too. So for anyone willing to take a moment out of their day to share their opinion, I'd greatly appreciate the advice/direction. Thank you!

Madden 07 has awful sim stats.

Go for Madden 05 over 07. If not go madden 12

Thank you! That's the kind of feedback I need. And there's another vote for M12. Curious as to what made that game so good. I stopped playing Madden during the Xbox 360 days and only recently picked it up again with M15 on the Xbox One, so feeling like I missed out on some good games.

I'm not sure if you can get 2005 on it. But definitely can get 2012 which is a really great game.

Thanks for your suggestion. I actually picked up M12 cheap and played it for a few days. While obviously the graphics jarring based on what we're used to today, I found the game play was surprisingly well tuned...better than I had expected. I did enjoy playing the game. But I just couldn't get past the UI and franchise mode. Reminded me a lot of Head Coach 09, but way more convoluted and tedious.

What about M13 or M25? Anyone have any thoughts on those games if they're worth picking up?

Gameplay wise m25 was pretty good, but I played that on the ps4. Franchise/cfm is worse than 12, no two ways about that.

Probably late, but I'd second the vote for M12. It's the last franchise mode that doesn't irk me haha

Madden 09 is the best far as I’m concerned . 10 is a close 2nd. The AI, the smooth gameplay, you can’t ignore 09. It’s awesome.

Get a PS/2 and play 07 or 05.

Yes 07 has the RB bug where they get far too many carries, but that can be mitigated by putting backup RB at FB and changing the RB1/RB2 sliders to 50/50 in coaching profiles (starting in M06, the RB1/RB2 slider was bugged to RB1/FB never to be fixed.

Madden 05 was the last PS/2 to have the slider work correctly.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Maddens from 2002-2005. That was definitely the peak of the series and by far my favorites!! I'm talking to a dude and next month when I get some money he's gonna sell me his PS2 and a ton of games!! Can't wait!!

I’d agree 2002-2005 are decent on OG Xbox. 2002, 2003 & 2005 are my favorite.

Madden 2010-2012 and M25 & M17 on Xbox 360 / PS3 are also pretty decent.

I am Still playing M25. I enjoy it, but worth noting that 2014 was there year that RGIII and Kaepernick were running crazy with the Read Option, so that was a focus of EA.

I enjoyed '12 as well, but in my experience, I felt the results in the passing game where often at the whim of the CPU......There were too many times where I made a dumb pass, but the CPU defender would let the ball go right by to my receiver for a big gain.....or the opposite where I would actually make a good read and time it right, but a defender would warp for the pick. In M25 my results seem more in line with performance.
