    Stop This Foul Ball Madness!

Despite having foul balls turned down as low as possible while pitching, there are a half dozen instances per game where a hitter will lock into whatever I throw and foul off pitch after pitch after PITCH. It’s so frustrating. I realize this happens a lot during real games, but it’s overkill every game I play in my franchise. It almost feels predetermined too. Like you can sense in the AB that’s it going to happen and you’re going to have another 10+ pitch AB.

Are you guys experiencing the same thing? If so, what can be done to stop this? Anything with the sliders that I am missing? I’d love any advice you all have.

bounce a fifty-four foot curve in the dirt let me see them foul that lol just beware doing w/runner(s) on. but srsly, I'm not afraid to throw a fastball WAY high, or WAY outside. also, playing on legend you will have a harder time keeping batters from fouling one off, in my experience

There are two things you’re almost certainly doing when this happens:

      1) You’re desperately trying to avoid a walk.
      2) You’re trying to strike the guy out.

Solution: pick your battles. If it’s the #8 or 9 hitter for example and it’s just not worth it to waste a bunch of pitches on him, just groove one, who cares? Or just walk him, who cares? Or, best option: remind yourself to pitch to contact - don’t try to throw “unhittable” pitches the whole at bat; try to throw pitches where you’re saying “here, hit this.”
      Just one man’s opinion.
I don’t actually care about any of this.

Lol good point. I’m only at All-Star level too. I’m going to throw obvious balls and see if that helps.

Good points. But just for fun, when this happens, I will throw three fastballs down the middle and they’ll be fouled off. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 1-2 count, 3-2, etc. Have you experienced the same thing?

^ I’ve definitely seen it in past iterations, not so much this year. And I would never do that, because I almost always err on the side of the walk, since I lead the league in fewest BBs allowed by a mile, if I sense a stupid-long at bat coming up I’ll just ditch him almost immediately.

You'd be surprised how often the CPU will chase a max effort breaking pitch in the dirt.

That said....Apparently SDS thought there were too many pitches being fouled off too, because there's a swing timing adjustment (reduction) in the patch coming tomorrow. In theory that's going to create more swings and misses and less fouls, although it remains to be seen if it affects both human and CPU.

This happens in MoM too. I end off fast playing the AB after the batter fouls off 4 consecutive pitches. It normally happens on a 3-2 count. I've seen up to 10 consecutive pitches fouled off, including pitches that no one on earth should have any chance of making contact on. I figure it's the game's way of running up a pitch count. Happens a lot when a pitcher has a low pitch count in an inning. Gets boring.

You thought Madden was the only sports game with scripted gameplay?

That is fantastic news! I’m glad SDS finally recognized this too. I feel like this has been an annoying issue for the last 3-4 years.

Exactly. It happens a ton on 3-2 counts and it almost seems like it doesn’t matter where you throw the pitch, they’ll find a way to foul it off. Sometimes, when I’m facing a hitter with 90+ contact, I’ll groove several pitches right down the middle (that they should hammer out of the park), and they’ll just keep fouling them off. That’s when I know it’s a problem with the game and not me just nibbling around the strike zone.

One of the worst things on this game and this happened on 18, too. It's irritating. This is definitely in my top 3 pet peeves.

I got so frustrated with this I created a work around. 7-9 Batters - when foul fest begins I go into sliders and bottom out timing, foul frequency, and solid hits. This is usually happens in a 3-2 count and more often than not causes them to play something into the field. 1-6 hitters get a bottomed out foul frequency. I will either walk you, you get a hit, or you strikeout. I'm done waiting out a 14 pitch AB when I'm literally just grooving them down the middle in desperation for SOMETHING to happen that is not a foul ball.
