    M20 1988 Roster PS4

Ok, I think I am confident enough about M20 to go ahead and start this thread.

I will be making a 1988 roster for M20. This will be a Play Now only roster at this time. After testing franchise and general frustration over the years trying to use classic rosters in franchise, I decided late in the M19 cycle to just go with Play Now rosters. So, Free Agents and expansion teams will NOT be adjusted. If EA fixes franchise mode to my liking at some point, I might make the roster franchise friendly. But I do not see that happening.

So, what will this roster be?
All 28, 1988 NFL teams will have complete rosters. Correct height, weight, equipment, and highly researched process for ratings. Most of you know the quality of my work and you can expect the same attention to detail.

I do not have a timeline for completing this roster. I am going to do as much as I can over the next couple of weeks before school starts back up. The fall is a very busy time for me with teaching, coaching, and family time. So, please be patient. The roster will be finished.

To go along with the roster I plan on creating several playbooks to provide a true to life 1988 NFL experience.

    File Name 1988
    PSN: Iteachhistory78

    Teams complete:
AFC Central: Bengals, Browns, Oilers, Steelers
NFC West: Falcons, 49ers, Rams, Saints
NFC Central: Bears, Buccs, Lions, Packers, and Vikings
AFC West: Broncos, Chargers, Chiefs, Raiders, and Seahawks
NFC East: Cardinals, Cowboys, Eagles, Giants, Redskins
AFC East: Bills, Colts, Dolphins, Jets, Patriots

    All 1988 teams complete!

    Re: M20 1988 Roster PS4

I have finished the Browns and the Bengals. The Bengals went to the Super Bowl and lost in an amazing game against the 49ers in 1988.

The Browns were a solid team that got hit hard by the injury bug. Starters, especially on offense were going down at an alarming rate.

I have also started working on playbooks. I have created a balanced offensive playbook and a base 3-4 defensive playbook. With a limited sample size, both playbooks are working well at this time.

Played a game using my custom playbooks today and the 88 Browns(me) and Bengals(CPU).

The game played great! I gave both teams the custom playbooks I made.
The final score was 36-30 with the Browns winning in OT.

Defense dominated early for both teams, but Cincy got their running game going after an Ickey Woods 79 TD run! They continued to run the ball well throughout the game.
Meanwhile, Byner had a few decent runs for the Browns but could not sustain the success. So, the Browns had to rely on Kosar and the passing game.
The Browns fell behind by 10 mid way through the 4th quarter, but were able to score a TD on a deep pass from Kosar to Slaughter. The Bengals were playing man-to-man, and Lewis Billups bit hard on a double move and had no safety help, easy TD.
The Browns D stepped up and made a key stop with just under 2 minutes to go. The Browns moved into FG range and tied the game with only 7 seconds left. Cleveland won the toss in OT and drove down the field to win the game on a TD pass to Newsome.

      Bengals/ Browns
      Total Off: 527/549
      Rush Yards: 316/123
      Pass Yard: 211/426
      Penalties: 7/4
      Turnovers: 0/1
      Playcalling:
      Pass: 31/42
Sacked: 2/7 (Browns struggled in pass protection)
      Rush: 32/31
Total Plays: 65/80= 145 ( a little high, but not out of range due to OT and nature of the game)
      Pass%: 51/61

      Passing:
      Esiason: 18/31 58% 221 yds 0 TD 0 INT
      Kosar: 25/41 60% 486 yds 4T D 1 INT

      Rushing:
      Woods: 10-159yd 15.9 avg 1TD
      Brooks: 20-151yd 7.5 avg 1TD
      Byner: 17-73yd 4.2 avg
      Mack: 10-26 2.6avg
      Fontenot: 3-13 4.3avg

I forgot to write down Receiving stats, but they were good.
Overall, I was happy with the game. Perhaps a couple too many big plays, but the Bengals had a really good offense in 1988 and it showed, especially on the ground. The Browns struggled to run in 1988 and that was apparent in the game.
I called all of the Browns plays and had to go pass heavy in the 4th quarter. The playcalling for the Bengals with the custom playbook was really solid, both offensively and defensively.

Close to default All-Pro. Penalties are altered in an effort to have more realistic penalties and not adversely affect gameplay. I have decreased QBA for both Human and CPU to increase the chances of poor throws.

Here are the settings I am working with currently. The settings might change, but so far I like what I am seeing.

            Skill: All-Pro

            Facemask: 50
            Block in the Back: 50
            Roughing the Passer: 50
            Defensive Pass Interference: 65

Yeah the Cowboys were not very good. It was also Landry's last season.

I have always liked the 88 season due to how much change was about to come. The Cowboys were falling apart, but soon to be rebuilt. My Browns had a solid team that was decimated by injuries. Schottenheimer did some great coaching, maybe the best of his career. Dealing with all of the injuries and still making the playoffs. However, Modell did not seem to understand that and fired him and hired Bud Carson.
The Steelers were hitting bottom, the Oilers were gaining traction, and the Bengals had a great season and almost beat the 49ers.
The Bills be just starting to show promise while the Dolphins struggled.
In the NFC, the Eagles under Buddy Ryan were a force. The Bears were still a strong team but just could not get enough from their offense. The NFC West had 3 10-6 teams.

Lots of good storylines in 1988.

Exactly how do you do the two controller trick to assign custom playbooks inside CFM.

My thinking is after you release this roster I can run a 32 team CFM creating all the real coaches for that year, turn off injuries and simply play a one season replay.

Can’t wait to use this roster regardless!!!

Unfortunately you cannot do the two controller trick for CFM. I have tried, and tried and tried. There is some funky work around if you create a 3rd string player or something like that. I have seen people mention it in past years for the regular roster.

It is possible to do custom playbooks with two controllers in Play Now, and it works great.

Basically, create a 2nd profile and download custom playbooks to both profile you will be using.
As a precaution, make sure all of you settings and sliders match in both profiles. I am not sure if you have to do this, but it is Madden, so probably. LOL

Start the game with the profile you are going to use that has the roster file you are using on it.
Get the 2nd controller and log into that profile also.

With Controller 1 (main profile), load the roster.
Go to Play Now, select your teams with the appropriate controllers.
Set playbooks and uniforms. Keep both controllers on the respective team
                          Start game.
Before the kickoff, pause the game and go to controller select.
Move the 2nd controller back to the middle.
                          Resume the game.
You will have to play the kickoff for the other team, but after that the CPU takes over.
Also, if you want to just watch, put both controllers in the middle and after the kickoff just sit back and enjoy the game!

                            Just an FYI on settings:

Currently I am getting a few too many plays per game. I had hoped that it was just a game or two, but it seems to be the norm.

I will probably be dropping the runoff down a few more seconds and see if that helps.

Can Run/Pass Ratio be remedied in CFM, if we run a 32-team control league. We play full game, all Offensive Snaps with Home Team. We Simulate the Computers Offensive plays, assigning the Baltimore Ravens Offense Playbook to each team.

This would correct QB stats, and we could compensate by playing on a lower skill level, due to the fact we will have to call a large amount of running plays to balance out Run/Pass Ratios.

I have not really played Madden since 2016.
Is this game really worth buying ?
I trust the opinions of you guys, as I am a Classic Roster guy only. I would not do Play Now, just CFM, and use the 32-Team Idea.

If this is worth a purchase, I would create a Classic Roster. My other concern is just how long would QB Throw Accuracy and Awareness need too go, to replicate late-1990s' to early-2000s' statistics. Are we talking 40-50 range ? And, would that ruin in-game action.

Hope to hear your thoughts, Percussion especially on this one. Pitch me some ideas as well, for a year to recreate, if Madden really is worth it.

                              Thx
