So, I've decided to do a little DIY spreadsheet roster using the Alumni teams.
I'm quite happy we have them, this is something that was in ESPN Hockey (and I did the renaming guide for that) and it's a great feature to have if done well.
And EA... did it okay. They had to stretch their licensed players to the limit they would stretch to fill all their teams, sometimes needlessly cluttering some, resulting in many duplicates. Mike Sillinger is in the game a dozen times, and Sean Burke is in there 7 or 8 times. And if you play Franchise with these teams, then you obviously don't want multiple Gretzkys and Roys running around.
That's where I come in. I will build new rosters around the existing alumni team. We have no roster sharing, shame on you EA, so this is DIY, I've made a spreadsheet, and you can follow my progress there.

I've made my decision on the goalies. There should be a filter active on the sheet. You should see 4 goalies per team, everybody that is in pink will need to be either created or moved from another team. If you see a bunch of red players, those are the dupes, they can be filtered out by applying a filter to column F, filter by (blank). But I'm thinking they'll be hidden.
Some ground rules for the set:
- Absolutely no active NHL players. But if they've retired in the offseason it's fine, hence Luongo on Florida, Niemi on San Jose...
- If EA put in a dubiously deserving or active players, I'll at minimum remove him from the rosters and either put him in Free Agency (Like Soderstrom and Weiman) or plain hide him somewhere in Europe (Like Saros)
- I'll tend to add post-1967 expansion players primarily, and frankly, mostly from the late 70s on. It's what I know, and probably what most of you know too. But make no mistake, Bobby Orr and Maurice Richard and the likes will be in. I don't think I'll add any pre-WW2 folks, though.
- I'll do my best choosing on what team duplicated players will stay on. Sometimes, I pick because it's the obvious choice, sometimes I pick based on needs of the teams, for exemple, knowing the Habs had Plante and that I would add Dryden to them, I kept Roy on Colorado, knowing they would pretty much only have garbage goalies otherwise. I expect a fight because I put Belfour on Dallas and not Chicago, but he won a cup there and Chicago has Hall & Esposito already. Dallas has Turco, Wakaluk and ******* Roman Turek. They needed him. Tampa's best goalies are all active or better fits elsewhere, hence they have comically awful ones, better hope Puppa goes on a hot streak. Tell me what you think, give me an argument and I might switch folks around! But at the end of the day, it's a DIY set so you can move players around where you want.
- I'm adding the Thrashers and the Seals / Barons franchise.
So, keep track of my progress in the spreadsheet! I'm starting on defensemen now.
