I think a bigger bonus leads to a flatter year to year cap hit. I've noticed that with deals that have a lower bonus, cap hits can be $8 mil one year and $12 the next. But if you release or trade a player, the bonus turns into a cap penalty. So if you're sure that you're going to keep him for the duration of the deal, more bonus. If you think you'll cut or trade him a year or two into it, smaller bonus is better.
