Game 8, Year 2 (2028 season): #11 LSU Tigers at Auburn Tigers

    #11 49 -- 7-1 (4-1)
    N/R 30 -- 5-3 (2-3)

RB Scottie Rodgers exalts following his first of two 4th quarter touchdown runs during LSU's rout over Auburn Saturday night.

QB Rob Mason and RB Scottie Rodgers each have huge days as LSU outpaces Auburn in 49-30 romp | Senior passer throws for a career-high 477 yards, and 4 touchdowns to lead the Tigers to their 7th win | Heisman candidate Rodgers scores 2 fourth quarter touchdowns to cap off a strong 207 scrimmage yard day | With their final tune-up now behind them, LSU now sets its sights towards SEC West supremacy with home bout versus #4 Alabama next on tap

Auburn, AL -- #11 LSU was facing an Auburn team fresh off of two straight losses following a surprising 5-0 start this season under first year head coach and former LSU offensive coordinator Anthony High. Unfortunately for the former Tulane quarterback, his old boss D. Geezy got the best of him, as LSU handed Auburn a third straight loss, cruising to a 49-30 victory Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn had no answer for the red-hot LSU offensive attack, as QB Rob Mason under new offensive coordinator Bryce Allen, finishing with a career-high 477 passing yards, to go along with 4 touchdown passes in a game that was probably not as close as the final score looks.

Despite throwing two interceptions, senior QB Rob Mason was on fire Saturday night, finishing with a mind-blowing 21.7 yards per completion on a career-high 477-yard night.

Mason's 88-yard touchdown connection with TE Lucas Rodgers put LSU on top 7-3 in the first quarter, and the visiting team would never look back.

A pair of touchdown passes in the second quarter to RB Greg Hearn, who finished with a career-high 108 receiving yards, helped LSU begin to pull away. And Mason's 87-yard connection with WR Chase Doyle in the third quarter gave him his fourth touchdown of the night while also giving LSU a 35-16 advantage.

Sophomore star RB Scottie Rodgers got in on the scoring frenzy in the fourth quarter, gashing Auburn's defense with a pair of touchdown runs from 6 yards and 58 yards away, helping him in his bid for the Heisman Trophy. Rodgers finished the night with 207 total yards from scrimmage, contributing 122 rushing yards as well as 8 receptions for 85 yards.

"I think when you look at how this game played out, clearly they had problems stopping us offensively, but to tell you the truth, we had problems stopping their offense as well," said Geezy, who was coaching for the first time against his former player and coaching protégé, High.

After a somewhat slow start to the evening, sophomore RB Scottie Rodgers came alive in the fourth quarter with two touchdown runs, including this one from 58 yards away that made the score 49-23 late.
"They finished with 30 points and made three field goals that were under 30 yards today, which is an indication that they moved the ball very well throughout the game but had problems in the red zone. Coach High has that team headed in the right direction, and they're going to be a problem for us in the near future. Thankfully, tonight we did enough to get the 'W.'

Saturday night's win for LSU was essentially their final tune-up before next week's colossal matchup with #4 Alabama in Baton Rouge. Winners of the SEC West three of the past four seasons, the Crimson Tide (7-0) will be looking to cling to its lead in the division while LSU (7-1) will be looking to take over first place in its bid to win the division for the first time since all the way back in 2007. The Tide defeated the Tigers 45-35 last season at Tuscaloosa in a game played with similar stakes.

"We know what's in front of us and the overall challenge," said Geezy. "We got a major monkey off of our backs a few weeks ago versus Tulane, but now we have a chance to slay the real dragon of this conference in recent years. Clearly a big week of preparation is ahead and obviously our program has a big opportunity here to start to change the narrative of LSU football.

"I am friggin' hyped up and cannot wait to get to work this week at getting our guys ready. Weeks like the one coming up are why we get into this business."

Notes: LSU's 684 total offensivs yards is the most ever for a D. Geezy coached team, including his 17 years as Tulane's head coach...LSU had several players get injured during Saturday night's contest, all on defense. LB Will McNeal left the game with an ankle injury in the first quarter, FS Mario Reed left the game in the second quarter with a hand injury, and DE Jon Jackson left the game in the third quarter with a back injury. All three players never returned to the game, and Geezy would not elaborate on the injuries during his press conference, however McNeal indicated on his Twitter page late Saturday night that he definitely will not be stopped from playing in next week's game versus Alabama. "Injuries are a part of our game," said Geezy. 13 years ago when I was at Tulane, we played Bama without our starting quarterback and running back and did what we had to do to come away with a 13-10 win at the dome. It is just something you deal with and game-plan around if it comes to that."

TE Lucas Rodgers and Mike the Tiger all celebrated with WR Chase Doyle following Doyle's terrific catch-and-run 87-yard third quarter touchdown that helped LSU gain a 35-16 lead. Doyle, a senior playing in place of injured sophomore WR Brady Carter, finished with a career-high 125 receiving yards on the night.

Auburn fans chanted "War Eagle" as their team got set to run onto the field hoping to avoid a third straight loss.

Jordan-Hare Stadium's Entertainment Production Team was probably a little upset that the school would not let them budget more for this weak smoke display.

LSU true freshman LB Derek Kerr has been coming into his own as of late, taking down RB Chris Kelly behind the line of scrimmage early in the game and finishing with 4 tackles on the night.

TE Lucas Rodgers' career-long 88-yard touchdown reception put LSU on top 7-3 early on his way to finishing with 4 receptions for a season-high 119 yards.

An underrated contributor this season has been first year junior college transfer RB D.J. Weaver, who finished with 8 carries for 88 yards, including this 39-yard touchdown run that made the score 14-3 in the second quarter. Weaver is second on the team with 405 rushing yards on the year.

RB Greg Hearn's first of two long touchdown receptions in the second quarter helped the Tigers start to pull away. Here, he celebrated with Mike the Tiger until these officials decided to be haters and broke up the fun.

Sacks have been very hard to come by this season for LSU, as they have only 7 on the year, however senior DE Matt Manning's first half takedown of Auburn true freshman QB Josh Stewart helped that total. Manning now has 2 on the year, which is astonishingly a team-high.

After grabbing a short reception on a 10-yard hook pattern, senior WR Chase Doyle turned on the jets for this 87-yard touchdown that extended LSU's lead to 35-16 in the third quarter.

Auburn RB Chris Kelly was a problem for LSU most of the night and finished with 20 carries for 118 yards.

RB Scottie Rodgers' emphatic dive into the end zone to cap off a 58-yard run helped seal the deal for LSU, making the score 49-23 late. Rodgers finished the night with 122 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns to go along with his 8 receptions for 85 yards.

Junior offensive guards Sam Jackson (#57) and Brandon Johnson (#73) celebrate as LSU notched its 7th victory this season; the team has won only 8 games each of the past two years.

QB Rob Mason was named Player of the Game following another stellar performance. The team hopes he can play this way next week with #4 Alabama set to make their way to Baton Rouge for a huge SEC West contest.

Great job avoiding the trap game and building confidence on offense heading into Bama week. The weak smoke display comment literally made me spit my drink out of my mouth. Great stuff as always and hopefully the momentum will continue with the offense against the tide next week.

Haha...glad you liked the smoke display comment.

It felt good to just get past this game with a 'W,' though we did suffer a big injury heading into an already tough matchup on Saturday versus Bama's stout O-line.

            LSU Tigers News Clips

Jackson had words with Texas Tech QB Kyle Johnson during last year's 72-42 LSU win at Lubbock.

LSU | DE Jackson to miss time
            Mon, 23 Oct 2028 02:11:14 -0700
Erin Andrews of FOX Sports reports that LSU senior DE Jon Jackson (81 ovr), who exited last week's contest versus Auburn with a back injury, will miss 2 to 3 games, according to a team source. Jackson has accounted for 22 tackles, including 5 tackles for loss this season for a Tigers defense set to go against one of the top offensive lines in the nation on Saturday versus #4 Alabama.

Andrews, who curiously tweeted this report in the middle of Sunday night/Monday morning as she happened to be in New Orleans covering Fox's Saints-Cowboys matchup, indicates that Tigers true freshman DE Derek Holley (73 ovr) will start in Jackson's place. Holley, a former 4-star recruit a year ago, has contributed just 4 tackles on the season, playing in a reserve role.

LSU | Mason amped for final opportunity versus Bama
            Tue, 24 Oct 2028 07:11:14 -0700
Melanie Collins of CBS Sports reports that LSU QB Rob Mason (86 ovr) stopped short of duplicating his week 5 victory guarantee like he did prior to his team's 20-13 victory over Tulane earlier this season, but even still, the senior signal caller is extremely confident as he gets set to take on an Alabama team the Tigers have lost 11 straight contests to, including last season's 43-35 defeat in Tuscaloosa.

"Yeah I am not going to take it to the level I did a few weeks back with Tulane, so I am not going to say it quite like that...but yeah, I feel very good about this game and I believe we can take them.

"This one is for first place in the division, I am 0-3 against them, so hopefully Tiger Stadium is ready for a hell of a show. We want this one, we need this one, and I'll leave it at that."

LSU | Trio of 4-star recruits commit
            Wed, 26 Oct 2028 07:15:17 -0700
Jordan Hebert of LSUSports.net reports that the LSU Tigers have received commitments from a trio of 4-star prospects this week, nabbing Florida SS Stephen Barrett (6-1, 188 pounds, 4.68 40-time, #12 rated SS prospect), Canada FS D.J. Durbin (5-11, 201 pounds, 4.48 40-time, #8 rated FS prospect), and Texas QB Eric King (6-1, 199 pounds, 4.54 40-time, #14 rated QB prospect).

All three players had visited LSU's campus several weeks ago, witnessing the Tigers' 20-13 victory over Tulane back in week 5.

Durbin, who is from Ottawa and was reportedly the top player on LSU's recruiting board this year according to team sources, figures to have the best chance out of the three for playing time next year, with the team set to lose starting FS Mario Reed (80 ovr) to graduation after this season. He chose the Tigers over Alabama, coincidentally LSU's opponent this upcoming weekend.

2029 LSU Recruiting Class through week 9 - currently 9th rated overall

Game 9, Year 2 Preview (2028 season): #4 Alabama Crimson Tide at #10 LSU Tigers

              GAME 9 PREVIEW

              ....................6 1/2....................

2027: QB Rob Mason had a frustrating evening last season in Tuscaloosa, getting sacked four times while also throwing three interceptions.

Last Meeting: Then-#13 LSU hung tough and was able to make a game of it late, however in the end was not able to overcome all of its mistakes in a 43-35 loss to then-#1 Alabama last season in Tuscaloosa. QB Rob Mason, then a junior, finished the game with 0 touchdowns and three interceptions while being sacked 4 times by the ferocious Crimson Tide defense. Then-true freshman RB Scottie Rodgers had a career-performance, rushing for 173 yards and 4 touchdowns, but that would not be enough as Alabama got big days out of QB Matt Thompson (361 passing yards, 2 touchdowns), RB Alex Moore (240 rushing yards, 1 touchdown), and WR Randy Payne (124 receiving yards, 1 touchdown).

The loss marked the Tigers' 11th straight defeat to the Tide while dropping LSU second year head coach D. Geezy's career record versus Bama to 9-5.

Ok, I am definitely doing something wrong in my dynasty report. You use attractive females as your news reporters and I'm using obscure baseball players from the 1980s. I need to re-evaluate some of my choices.

But in all seriousness, looking forward to this game. Bama is always a barnburner!

Matt Thompson seems to elevate the rest of that team. Their running back isn't better than yours and their secondary is worse but their offensive line is going to give their backfield time and that's going to stress your secondary. Are you gonna post this before it happens in real life? Haha

Also congrats on the four blue chips! A question about recruiting: how do you manage your roster with regard to recruitment? I feel like I usually try to get less than 25 because I never have 25 guys graduating, but on occasion of late I've been oversigning.

Ha...yeah probably about a decade ago is when I realized that making your dynasty as um, "aesthetically pleasing on the eyes" is a big draw.

Appreciate you checking in my friend. As you can probably tell, I haven't had a whole lot of time for my own dynasty in recent weeks, much less others', but I do plan to take a deep dive into yours in the near-future. At first glance, it looks SOLID!

When you say their secondary, I assume you meant their wide receivers, because their secondary is absolutely stacked! But in all you're right about their offense - this is not the best team they've fielded in recent years and they look vulnerable. I think their offensive line is the key to their success. The true freshman RB Christian Luke is averaging 4.2 YPC, so stopping him may be the key to a win here. My starting DE Jon Jackson going down won't help, as the true freshman DE Derek Holley has been getting pushed around a lot at practice (literally pancaked on just about every other play).

I certainly do hope I am able to post before the real life game. Things have been a bit crazy at work lately, so time has been limited, but I do want to get this one posted not long after playing.

As far as your recruiting question...I simply just go into each year knowing about how many players I am losing and do my best to manage around that. For instance, this year, I know I am losing 21 seniors, so I want to sign about 17 to 18 players during the season, and leave myself with 3 or 4 available scholarships for the off-season batch of recruits.

One of my rules posted on the front page is that I am not allowed to over-recruit or cut anyone, because I feel as though it is too easy to stack your team up if you do, as you're able to cut the worst players off of your team every year and back-fill the roster with better players. I find it to be more challenging when you don't over-recruit, so that's been a rule of mine for a long time now. If I get a low rated player, I just have to live with it and try to develop them; at worst, you'll have a decent special teams player down the road.

Thanks for checking in fellas...it is finally time to kickoff this battle for first place!

I *did* mean receivers. I *had* decided that I would just cut my best players if I over recruited but I don't know that I've stuck by that. Only been one season where I've done this, though.

Yeah, I'd highly advise not getting into the habit of over-recruiting; it severely damages the challenge-aspect of the game, in my experiences from a long time ago. Plus, as I mentioned, it could be rewarding when you see a lowly rated guy end up being a contributor as a 5th year senior, running down making tackles for you on special teams one day or making a key block on a special teams return.

                          Develop those young guys!

Heh...I thought about that during the days leading up to my game; just an incredible coincidence. Hopefully things go better for the LSU-faithful this upcoming Saturday than it did for me...

Game 9, Year 2 (2028 season): #4 Alabama Crimson Tide at #10 LSU Tigers

                            #4X 38 -- 8-0 (6-0)
                            #10 28 -- 7-2 (4-2)

Alabama true freshman RB Christian Luke shredded LSU's defense for nearly 300 scrimmage yards in an absolutely dominating performance.

In a game that played out similarly to last season's matchup, #10 LSU comes back from a significant deficit but runs out of gas in the end in a 38-28 defeat to #4 Alabama | Crimson Tide blue chip freshman RB Christian Luke goes off for 279 yards on the ground and 2 touchdowns as Tigers defense has no answer for the nation's former #2 high school running back prospect | First half mistakes by QB Rob Mason contribute to team falling into a 24-7 hole that it just could not climb out of despite RB Scottie Rogers' second half heroics | Now all but eliminated from SEC title contention for a whopping 21st consecutive season, LSU heads into its bye week wondering what could have been

Baton Rouge, LA -- #10 LSU scored a big touchdown early and appeared poised to be able to finally get the Alabama monkey off its back, however in similar fashion to last season's 43-35 contest at Tuscaloosa, the #4 ranked Crimson Tide punched back quickly and eventually held on late, taking down the homestanding Tigers 38-28 Saturday afternoon in Baton Rouge. Tide true freshman RB Christian Luke stole the show at Death Valley, rushing for a career-high 279 yards and 2 touchdowns on 33 carries, as the LSU defense had no answer for the former top 15 high school prospect (#2 running back prospect overall in 2028).

Alabama DE Larry Shelton, the #1 overall high school prospect in the nation in 2027, terrorized the Tigers offense, finishing with a sack, along with this back-breaking 64-yard interception return touchdown just before halftime.

Tigers sophomore CB Ryan Carter's 24-yard interception return touchdown on literally the game's very first play from scrimmage seemed like a positive omen early on for the home team, giving LSU a lightning-quick 7-0 lead. However that would be about the only highlight of the first half for Carter and the Tigers, as the Crimson Tide would go on to score 24 unanswered first half points, including a 51-yard touchdown run by Luke, along with an absolutely devastating 64-yard interception return touchdown by sophomore DE Larry Shelton, 2027's #1 rated high school recruit, which helped give Bama a 17-point halftime advantage.

"Turnovers will get you beat every time, and I'm afraid today was one of those days, said LSU second year head coach D. Geezy of Alabama's scoring flurry that began with a lost fumble by QB Rob Mason, a turnover that would eventually get cashed in by a 1-yard touchdown run by Tide RB Trey Smith to tie the game at 7-7 early. In all, the Tigers turned the ball over four times in the first half, including Mason's fumble, a pair of interceptions, along with a turnover on downs when RB Scottie Rodgers was stopped on a 4th and inches near the goal line by Bama junior MLB Kevin Taylor.

"You cannot expect to beat a team like this when being careless with the football. All of our turnovers came in the first half, and thankfully we cleaned it up in the second half, however the early errors ultimately cost us in the end."

Despite the 17-point deficit after two quarters, the Tigers were able to make a game of it in the second half, mostly via a big second half by Rodgers, a Heisman candidate. Rodgers' a 43-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of the third quarter cut LSU's deficit to 24-14. And later, in the fourth quarter, the former 4-star prospect would score on touchdown runs of four yards and two yards, making the score 31-28 with under four minutes remaining.

With the team's pass offense struggling, true freshman RB Christian Luke shouldered most of the load Saturday afternoon for Alabama, finishing with 298 yards from scrimmage and 2 touchdowns while helping his team play keep-away late.
Unfortunately's for Geezy's bunch however, they could not solve the game's biggest puzzle - Luke. With the contest on the line and the Tigers desperately looking to get the ball back to their offense for a potential game-tying or game-winning drive, the 6-1 206 pound blue chip freshman's 52-yard touchdown scamper sealed the deal for the Tide, making the score 38-28 with two minutes remaining. Luke finished the day with 298 yards from scrimmage, and Geezy attributes that to the offensive line of the Crimson Tide.

"I thought we played with great energy, competed well. I just think their guys up-front were significantly better than ours, really on both sides of the ball," said Geezy, answering a question regarding Mason being sacked five times on the day by Alabama defenders.

"The bottom line is that we are light years away from where we need to be up-front. We love our guys, but right now I think the difference between us and Bama is in our line play. They have NFL first round picks on both sides of the ball, and we need to figure out how to get there again some day. To put it bluntly, they wore us out, and that's why we are not winning this matchup with them every year for over a decade now; there's just not enough juice up-front."

With the loss, LSU's chances of competing for their first SEC title since 2007 are virtually over, barring a very specific, extremely unlikely scenario. The team will now head into a bye week, with a home game versus Ole Miss (4-4) next up on the docket.

"You know, there's still a whole lot for us to play for here, despite us basically being knocked out of SEC contention," said Geezy. "Getting double-digit wins as well as a top 10 finish is important to us, not only personally for us as individuals, but as a program moving forward, specific to recruiting.

"We will take this bye week to lick our wounds and prepare to finish strong. There's still a lot for us to accomplish in 2028 despite an SEC title likely being taken off of the table for us. We are down, but not out."

With SEC championship aspirations on the line, #10 LSU would go down swinging despite facing a 31-14 fourth quarter deficit.

QB Rob Mason and WR Glen Walker, both seniors, warm-up before the crowd at Death Valley, hoping to knock off Alabama for the first time in their careers.

Sophomore CB Ryan Carter's pick-six literally on the game's very first play from scrimmage seemed like an early omen for LSU.

Alabama true freshman RB Christian Luke hurdled over LSU sohomore MLB J.J. Brooks here then seconds later hurdled another defender on this sensational 15-yard run for an early first down, a sign of what was to come for the former #2 high school running back prospect.

Up 17-7 in the second quarter, Alabama stuffed LSU star RB Scottie Rodgers behind the line of scrimmage on this 4th down attempt at the goal line, turning the ball over on downs.

Mason had Alabama defenders in his grill all afternoon long as he was sacked 5 times on Saturday, including this one by Crimson Tide senior DT Cole Wilson.

LSU junior nickel CB Jerome Harmon continued his penchant for locating the football, hauling in his sixth interception of the season to halt a first half Alabama possession.

The Crimson Tide got interceptions on back-to-back possessions to close out the first half - an earlier pick-six by DE Larry Shelton along with this one by senior FS Adam Dukes to help the Tide preserve a 24-7 halftime lead.

Pic 1 of 2: Down by 17, LSU came out of the second half gates swinging as Rodgers followed the block of his older brother Lucas (#13) on this 43-yard touchdown run that cut the Tigers' deficit to 24-14 early in the third quarter.

Pic 2 of 2: Much to the chagrin of Alabama CB Brian Wood (#23), S. Rodgers celebrated with the mascot after his long run. The sophomore Louisiana native finished the game with 129 scrimmage yards and 3 touchdowns, helping out his Hesiman résumé despite his team taking the 'L.'.

Bama QB Matt Thompson broke loose for a 19-yard touchdown run on an option-keeper, pushing his team's lead up to 31-14 early in the fourth quarter. It was about the only highlight for Thompson on the day, as he finished the game with just 109 passing yards while throwing 2 interceptions.

Mason, despite not throwing any touchdown passes, nearly willed his team to victory despite facing a 31-14 fourth quarter deficit. Mason finished the game with 348 passing yards despite facing heavy pressure for most of the game.

Shelton, who in 2027 was the nation's #1 overall high school prospect, had success versus LSU for a second year in a row, finished with this sack along with the aforementioned second quarter pick-six.

LSU WR Joe Burnett snagged this one handed pass for a big first down as the Tigers attempted to mount a comeback, but in the end, LSU's comeback attempt would fall short.

For the 12th consecutive season, the Crimson Tide celebrated a victory over the Tigers, putting them in great position to win the SEC West for the fourth time and the past five seasons, with a win versus #9 Tulane next week.
