TNK BOSTON BRUINS FRANCHISE

Stanley Cup Playoffs - Eastern Conference Finals
Game #1- Pittsburgh Penguins @ Boston Bruins
(Series tied 0-0)

The Bruins and Penguins are set to begin the Eastern Conference Finals in Boston with Game #1 at TD Garden. The Bruins begin the series at full health with no injuries while the Penguins are also completely healthy aside from Jake Guentzel who is playing through injured ribs. Matt Murray will be in net for Pittsburgh and started all 12 playoff games for the Penguins posting a 2.90 GAA and .898 Save% while Boston will go with Tuukka Rask who has started all 10 playoff games for the Bruins posting a 2.36 GAA and .910 Save%

1st Period - The Bruins and Penguins each had a scoring chance in the opening minutes as Charlie McAvoy unloaded a slap shot that drilled Murray off the mask and Brian Dumoulin hit the post with a shot through a screen. Boston would open the scoring 7:19 in when Patrice Bergeron won an offensive zone faceoff back to Chara who slid it across the blue line to McAvoy who put a low hard shot on net and Bergeron would get a stick on it to redirect it past Murray giving the Bruins a 1-0 lead with 12:41 to play in the period. The Penguins responded with some heavy pressure on the ensuing shift but Rask was able to deny the flurry of shots and Aston-Reese would take a hooking penalty to put Boston on the PP. The Bruins would strike quick on the man advantage as they moved the puck around and Bergeron would tip a Krug shot past Murray for his 2nd goal of the game making it 2-0 with 10:37 left in the period. Pittsburgh went on the PP with 6:20 left in the period but failed to convert as the Bruins PK unit and Rask did a good job and the score remained 2-0. Jared McCann tried to give the Penguins a spark when he dropped the gloves with Danton Heinen after a big hit in the corner. Chris Wagner was called for hooking with 4 seconds to play in the period to put Pittsburgh on another PP as the period came to an end with Boston leading 2-0 and holding a 13-10 edge in shots.

2nd Period - The Penguins began the 2nd period with 1:56 of PP time carrying over but the Bruins got some solid work from the PK unit and would return to even strength. Pittsburgh started to control play and would get another PP opportunity when Bjork was called for a hook and this time the Penguins would cash in as Rask stopped a low hard shot from Letang and Patric Hornqvist would score on the rebound to cut the Bruins lead to 2-1 with 12:11 left in the period. Pittsburgh would get another PP when Marchand went to the box for tripping and the Penguins had a number of chances on the PP but Rask was standing on his head in the Bruins net making several tough saves. The Bruins would survive the PK and extend their lead on a great play as Rask cleared the puck out and hit Marchand coming out of the box for a breakaway and he would beat Murray with a move to the backhand to increase the Boston lead to 3-1 with 5:52 remaining in the period. Pittsburgh continued to out-skate the Bruins in the 2nd period and would go on the PP with 2:25 left when Wagner was called for hooking and Rask would come up big again with some clutch saves allowing Boston to kill off the penalty to Wagner. The 2nd period would come to an end as the Penguins out-shot the Bruins 18-6 in the period and now had a 28-19 edge in shots for the game but they would go to the 2nd intermission trailing by two goals as Boston had a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes

3rd Period - The Penguins would go on their 7th PP of the game early in the 3rd period and had good puck movement leading to a number a quality looks but Rask continued to turn everything aside and Boston would kill off the Carlo penalty and the score remained 3-1. The Bruins would extend the lead a few minutes later on a great effort by Karson Kuhlman as he deked through Riikola and fired a shot that was stopped by Murray but Kuhlman followed his shot and scored on the rebound to make it 4-1 with 13:54 remaining. The clock would wind down under 10:00 to play and Pittsburgh would get a goal when Rask stopped a shot that was tipped by Rust on its way in but Jared McCann was stationed at the post and stuffed the puck in on the rebound to give the Penguins life as they cut the deficit to 4-2 with 8:09 remaining. The Penguins were unable to build on the momentum from the McCann goal as Schultz and Rust took penalties putting Boston on back to back powerplays and Boston would cash in on the second PP chance when David Krejci came off the wall and beat Murray with a snap shot to make it 5-2 with 5:21 left to play. There would be no more scoring as the Bruins take game #1 by a score of 5-2

* The Bruins win Game #1 of the Eastern Conference Finals by a score of 5-2 despite being out-shot 34-27 as the Penguins carried play for much of the game but the Bruins capitalized on their chances and Tuukka Rask played great in net to give Boston a 1-0 series lead

* Tuukka Rask was outstanding for Boston and was the difference in this game as he stopped 32 of 34 shots

* The Bruins PK unit had a big night as they held the Penguins to 1 for 7 on the PP

* Patrice Bergeron stayed hot scoring 2 goals for Boston and now has 8 points (4 G / 4 A) in the last 3 games

* Brad Marchand scored his 5th of the playoffs and added an assist while Charlie Coyle picked up 2 assists and now has 12 points (4 G / 8 A) in the playoffs

* Matt Murray had a rough night allowing 5 goals on 27 shots in the Pittsburgh net

* The Bruins did a great job of neutralizing Crosby and Malkin who were virtually invisible in this game as they combined for zero points, a minus 2 rating and the Penguins star duo registered just 2 shots on net between them

* The Bruins lead the series 1-0 with Game #2 coming up in Boston as the Bruins look to take a 2-0 series lead while Pittsburgh will be looking to bounce back and even the series at 1-1 before heading to Pittsburgh for Game #3 & Game #4
