Yeah, these were tough ones to take back-to-back - not sure how worse it'd be if I didn't get my first win right before this stretch.

I've played ahead and have one game left to post in the 2006 season, so I'm going to burn through the next Around The NCAA & Tartan Tidbit updates and post it, then return to this on Monday with season wrap-up and offseason updates.

Thanks again to everyone who has followed along in this first year!

        Miller starts Senior Day
Redshirt senior Andre Miller will be given the start at quarterback for CMU’s season finale against Richmond on Saturday night after serving as the backup to true freshman Alex Smith for the past five games.

Miller is one of eight Tartans to be recognized prior to the contest as part of Senior Night festivities, joining quarterback David Ford, fullback Aaron Clifford, offensive tackles Darrell Satele and Ryan Fisher, defensive ends Joe Berg and Tyler Underwood, and cornerback Spencer Mason.

        Day suspended for Richmond
Starting free safety Sean Day will sit out the Tartans’ matchup against Richmond and may miss the 2007 season opener, Tartan Tidbits understands.

Day is under fire with the coaching staff for missing multiple study halls, and will serve a suspension. It is likely that the suspension carries into CMU’s first game of next season.

The junior has compiled 23 tackles and an interception in 2006.

        Fitch set for official visit
Three-star guard Matt Fitch (Sylvania, Ohio) will be on campus for his official visit to Carnegie Mellon this weekend, and will attend the Tartans’ season finale against Richmond on Saturday night.

Fitch was in Columbus, Ohio last weekend for the Ohio State/Michigan game, and while he didn’t commit to the Buckeyes, they reportedly became slight favorites for his signature. CMU will be his final official visit.

Michael Johnson commits to Ohio State
Three-star offensive tackle Michael Johnson (Dayton, Ohio), who was set to join Matt Fitch on campus for an official visit this weekend, has canceled his trip to CMU as he has verbally committed to Ohio State.

Johnson was with Fitch for an official visit at the Ohio State/Michigan game this weekend, and gave his pledge to the Buckeyes despite them suffering a 28-9 loss to the hated Wolverines.

“I liked Carnegie Mellon a lot,” said Johnson over the phone. “But when I was in Columbus this weekend, it was special. You can’t beat the atmosphere and the feeling when you’re there for a big game.”

After targeting six offensive linemen in the in-season recruiting period, CMU is left to just Fitch as a potential incomer on the line.

Season 1, Game 12: Richmond at Carnegie Mellon

Tartans Routed by Richmond in Season Finale
Carnegie Mellon had no answer for the Spiders’ Eric Ward, who threw for 409 yards and four touchdowns

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- After a string of promising performances, Carnegie Mellon suffered a setback in its season finale, falling to Richmond, 33-7, on Saturday night.

Carnegie Mellon (1-11) could not stop Richmond (8-4) quarterback Eric Ward, who finished with 409 yards passing and four touchdowns. The Spiders opened up a 27-0 lead before the Tartans dented the scoreboard, then added a pair of field goals to set the final score.

“I wish we could have given our seniors a better result,” said first-year head coach John Elliott. “They were great for us all of their careers, and were troopers this season as we started this new journey. I know they would have liked to win more games, but they’re the building blocks to this new era in Carnegie Mellon football.”

Andre Miller returned to the starting lineup for his final collegiate game and finished with 158 yards passing, a touchdown, and an interception. Robert Riley surpassed the 1,000-yard milestone on the ground with a 97-yard day, compiling a total of 1,034 on the season.

Defensively, sophomore defensive tackle Devon Elliott recorded a career-high nine tackles and three sacks. Elliott, along with sophomore cornerback Raymond Cooper, are intriguing underclassman pieces that the Tartans will have for two more seasons.

Carnegie Mellon, who finishes the season at 1-11, is set for one more season at the FCS level before moving up to FBS competition.

Scratched my head for awhile trying to remember why the Richmond Spiders sounded so familiar... and it was because I skipped school on an otherwise nondescript Thursday and/or Friday with a handful of friends to watch the 1st round of the NCAA basketball tourney...and the 16th seed Spiders upset somebody.... lemme google this... ok, it was actually the 15th seeded Spiders beating 2nd seeded Syracuse... and the year was 1991. [expletive], I am old.

.... and now back to your regularly scheduled Carnegie Mellon Tartans Dynasty Thread.

Pitt being 10-1 and still only ranked #19 is an absolute crime! Get us in the BCS! Tough, tough opening season for you, but at least you could lean on the rushing attack for a win finally! Keeps a little bit of morale up, haha. This was always going to be a building season, so just need to focus on the recruits and building up the program! Hopefully you can find a quarterback cause the guys you have STINK on ice.

I will always welcome these stories in the dynasty thread. I always would skip the first two days' worth of classes in college for the NCAA Tournament, but that was a little more recent than 1991

I have a feeling you'll be pretty happy with Pitt's bowl selection! And quarterback is definitely my main focus going into the off-season recruiting period, it sucked that there wasn't a three-star QB with an A awareness that I could have targeted in season. I can't possibly go into 2007 with Alex Smith as my starter

                    Fitch commits to Carnegie Mellon
Three-star guard Matt Fitch (Sylvania, Ohio) has given a verbal commitment to Carnegie Mellon after making his official visit over the weekend. Fitch chose the Tartans over Ohio State and Notre Dame, giving CMU its third pledge of the in-season recruiting period.

“There are so many things that I love about Carnegie Mellon,” said Fitch over the phone. “I like what Coach (John) Elliott is building, and my future will be in good hands with a degree from this university. But the location sold me. I loved walking around campus and how everything is so close to the city.”

Fitch joins three-star runningback Jim Manning (Reisterstown, Md.) and linebacker Matt Johnson (Circleville, Ohio) as future Tartans.

Quarterback likely target in off-season period
With its struggles this season at the quarterback position, Carnegie Mellon is likely to heavily target signal-callers in the off-season recruiting period, Tartan Tidbits understands.

Head coach John Elliott is likely to pitch immediate playing time to potential targets, with the graduations of Andre Miller and David Ford, and the struggles of true freshman Alex Smith. Smith will enter spring football as the de facto starter, with sophomore Warren Culberson being the only other quarterback on the roster.

The senior quarterback is Notre Dame’s eighth recipient of the award

Notre Dame senior quarterback Brady Quinn is the eighth player in school history to win the Heisman Memorial Trophy.
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- The oddsmakers were correct.

Picked as the preseason favorite to hoist the Heisman Memorial Trophy, Notre Dame star quarterback Brady Quinn did just that Saturday night, winning the 72nd edition of the award by 547 points.

Quinn beat out the other four finalists invited to Nokia Theatre in Times Square: Arizona State senior quarterback Sam Keller (906 points), Texas redshirt freshman quarterback Colt McCoy (905), Auburn senior runningback Kenny Irons (764), and Iowa redshirt junior runningback Albert Young (641).

“I’m honored to be forever remembered alongside all the greats to play this game,” said Quinn. “Although we didn’t return to a BCS bowl like we wanted to entering the season, we had a great year and I couldn’t have done this without my teammates.”

The senior signal-caller compiled a 164.6 quarterback rating, 3,377 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He follows former rivals Reggie Bush (2005) and Matt Leinart (2004) of USC as winners of the Heisman.

Quinn is the eighth Notre Dame student-athlete to win the award.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- For the second time in seven seasons, the BCS title is heading to The Sooner State.

No. 2 Oklahoma became the first two-time champion of the BCS era, blanking No. 1 Michigan, 21-0, on Sunday evening in the first BCS National Championship Game. The Bowl Championship Series initially rotated its title tilt between the Fiesta, Orange, Rose, and Sugar Bowls before creating a fifth separate contest for this season.

Junior All-American tailback Adrian Peterson captured Most Valuable Player honors after carrying the ball 25 times for 158 yards and a touchdown. After the game, the 2004 Heisman Trophy runner-up announced that he was declaring for the NFL Draft.

Michigan was looking for its first national championship since the 1997 season.
