El Paso Dreams: a UTEP Dynasty (NCAA 14)

EL PASO DREAMS: A UTEP MINERS NCAA 14 DYNASTY

Greetings! So I had been doing a Los Angeles Chargers Madden 20 franchise, until something incredible happened. Tonight I was going through old videogames. I knew I had NCAA 14 somewhere, but I've moved around a good deal recently and I had accepted it was gone for good. Until I opened my FIFA 13 case tonight, and there she was. I have much more fun playing NCAA 14 and doing dynasties than Madden franchises, so as soon as I found the game I knew I had to fire up a dyansty. After a lot of deliberation, I have settled on using UTEP. I played the first game tonight so I'm going to go ahead and start getting everything set up here. So of course I'm using the most updated rosters there are, but I didn't go through to make the schedules match the 2019 schedules. So I guess the first year will technically be the schedule from 2013. Let's ride.

    Game: NCAA 14
    System: PS3
    Difficulty: All-American
    Quarter Length: 8 Minutes
    Sliders: JustCallMeStretch's
    Rosters: NCAA1920 Rosters

DIMEL STEPS DOWN AS UTEP HEAD COACH

El Paso (TX)-- The El Paso Times learned Thursday night that UTEP head football coach Dana Dimel will be stepping down effective immediately. Dimel led the Miners to a 1-11 record with their lone win coming against Rice in his lone season at the helm.

Despite the poor season, this is still a rather shocking development. Everyone knew UTEP was a rebuilding project when Dimel inherited it, and it was realistically going to take a few years of hard work before the Miners were ready to be competitive again. When asked about his decision, Dimel responded:

"I can assure you all this was not an easy decision to make. I am so grateful to Mr. Senter for the opportunity to lead this wonderful football program. At the time, I have simply decided I want to take some time away from football and I am not pursuing other coaching opportunities at this time. I will be cheering for UTEP and the El Paso community moving forwards."

UTEP athletic director Jim Senter said a nation-wide search would begin immediately to find UTEP's next head football coach.

UTEP NAMES FORMER ARKANSAS, COWBOYS STAR MCFADDEN NEXT HEAD COACH

El Paso (TX)-- Ten days after the sudden departure of Dana Dimel, UTEP is closing in on their next head football coach. The El Paso Times has learned that UTEP is nearing a deal with Darren McFadden to become the 27th head football coach program history.

McFadden, 31, most recently played for the Dallas Cowboys in 2017 and has no coaching experience. He will instantly become one of the youngest head coaches in football history. When asked about the decision, UTEP athletic director Jim Senter said:

"The decision may surprise some, but Darren approached us about this job. We decided to interview him and were absolutely blown away with his approach. His presentation was thorough and detailed, and we ultimately decided he is the right person to lead us back into contention to win the Conference USA.

In Darren, we feel as if we are getting a young, energetic head coach. He has all the makings to be a dynamic recruiter and has deep ties in the area. We feel as if his energy and enthusiasm are exactly what our football program needs right now."

On paper, it certainly looks like a roll of the dice that UTEP is taking here. Maybe an offensive coordinator gig would have made some sense, but this seems like a huge leap for someone that has no prior coaching experience. Regardless, this is undoubtedly an exciting hire that will bring a jolt of excitement that the program sorely needs right now.

McFadden's introductory press conference will be held on Tuesday at 12:00 PM.

Darren McFadden Releases First Depth Chart

El Paso (TX) -- The question surrounding UTEP football all offseason was who would be named the starting quarterback. Seniors Brandon Jones and Kai Locksley were considered neck-and-neck after both received playing time last year.

For now, it appears as if that job belongs to Brandon Jones. But Coach McFadden did not hide that this could become an ongoing contest and that no one should be resting too easy. Regarding the situation, McFadden commented:

"Every coach says this, but ultimately, we are going to play the player that we feel gives us the best chance to win. Right now, we do believe that is Brandon. He's had a strong offseason and has displayed positive leadership through his work ethic. He's really embraced a leadership role this offseason. But this is something we will evaluate on a week-in-week-out basis. We are going to play the players that give us the best chance to win."

UTEP's first game of the 2019 campaign will come against a familiar foe in the New Mexico Lobos.

MINERS CONTROL CLOCK, HOLD OFF LOBOS

L: Brandon Jones scoring his first of three total touchdowns on the day. R: Tevaka Tuioti refused to let the Lobos go down without a fight.

El Paso (TX) -- Starting off 1-0 is always a relieving feeling and doing it against a rival team makes it even better. The UTEP Miners have already matched their 2018 season win total after defeating the New Mexico Lobos by a score of 24-14 on Saturday afternoon.

The Miners came out and set the tone early. After receiving the opening kickoff, senior quarterback Brandon Jones showed why head coach Darren McFadden named him the starter. Jones led the Miners on a methodical drive down the field that included a couple of key third down conversions. UTEP relied on a mix of runs and passes, and eventually, Jones ran it in from five yards out to give UTEP a 7-0 lead.

New Mexico responded quickly. Just a few plays later, and New Mexico quarterback Tevaka Tuioti shed a few Miner defenders and took the ball to the endzone on a 53 yard touchdown run. However, the extra point was missed so UTEP remained in front 7-6.

After trading three-and-outs, the Miners got the ball back and drove the ball into the redzone where Jones made his only mistake of the day. On third and goal, Jones tried forcing a pass that got intercepted.

After the Lobos drove into UTEP territory on the ensuing possession, the Miner defense stepped it up and ended up forcing a punt. UTEP responded with another strong, lengthy drive. Jones found Walter Dawn Jr. for a 23 yard score which gave the Miners a 14-6 lead heading into the break.

The UTEP defense deserves a lot of credit for the way they responded after giving up the long touchdown on their first drive. New Mexico received the opening kickoff of the second half and was shortly forced to punt again.

UTEP established a strong running game in the second half and never showed an interest in switching things up. UTEP running back Josh Fields had a heavy workload Saturday, getting 28 total touches. Quarterback Brandon Jones ran the ball 18 times himself. The Miners methodically chewed clock in the second half by putting together long, lengthy drives.

UTEP scored the only points of the fourth quarter after driving the ball all the way down to the Lobo one yard line, where Jones punched it in on a QB sneak. A couple plays later, and the Miners were headed into the fourth quarter nursing a 21-6 lead.

New Mexico refused to go away quietly. The Lobos were quickly putting together an impressive drive, as they quickly worked the ball into the Miner redzone with a lot of game left to play. UTEP's defense stepped up in a huge way, by forcing an incomplete pass on fourth and goal to preserve the two-score lead.

After a UTEP punt, New Mexico received the ball again and Tevaka Tuioti scored his second long touchdown of the day on a 74 yard run. A successful two point conversion and the Miner lead was quickly trimmed down to 21-14 with a lot of game left to play.

UTEP's offense answered in a huge way. The New Mexico front seven was worn out from the Miner rushing attack, and it showed. UTEP collected a few first downs, largely thanks to a couple of Brandon Jones QB keepers. Gavin Baechle drilled a 43 yard field goal with 0:42 on the clock to put the game out of reach. The clock eventually bled out, and UTEP came away with a strong 24-14 victory.
