Feyenoord need extra time to sink gutsy Utrecht

For the third time in five years Feyenoord lifted the KNVB Beker after needing extra time to see of FC Utrecht in a repeat of the 2016 final.

Despite dominating for the entire 90 minutes, Feyenoord were unable to turn their possession and chances into goals. In the first half alone they had 12 shots on goal but found the net with none of the them.

Utrecht gave Feyenoord a scare before the break, a golden opportunity tipped around the post only for the offside flag to be raised anyway.

The second half continued in similar vain until the 82nd minute. Nicolai Jorgensen's shot from a tight angle was well saved by Jeroen Zoet, however, Jens Toornstra was quickest to react and made no mistake with the rebound.

The goal seemed to shock Utrecht into action for the first time in the match and they stunned Feyenoord immediately. A deep cross from Gyrano Kerk found Kristoff Peterson at the back post who knocked it back across the six yard box first time where Sean Klaiber arrived to knock it into the gaping net.

That sent the match into extra time but it was quickly back in the hands of Feyenoord. Leroy Fer played the ball into Jorgensen who then handed it back to Fer with a neat back heel. He took a couple of touches to set himself before smashing his right footed shot into the back of the net.

The game was sealed seven minutes before the end of extra time as Ozyakup rose highest to meet a cross from Haps in between the last defender and goalkeeper. His bullet header flew past Zoet to hand Feyenoord their 14th KNVB Beker title.
