MEMPHIS TIGERS (6-4, 3-3) AT. SOUTH FLORIDA BULLS (6-4, 4-2)

TAMPA, Florida -- Despite the scoreline being just twelve points apart, this game was never that close. Memphis came into Raymond James Stadium this Saturday afternoon and manhandled the South Florida Bulls for four quarters.
Senior Bryce Huff and his compadres on defense found a way to shut down South Florida quarterback Jordan McCloud, who has been a revaluation since taking over from the injured Blake Barnett. They consistently closed the pocket around the redshirt freshman and locked him inside it for easy sacks. The Tigers had a total of seven sacks in the game and ten tackles for losses.
Huff though was the standout player for the Tigers defense, the defensive end recorded 5 tackles, 4 for a loss and three sacks on McCloud.
"You gotta give their team their credit. We didn't play well. When you go out there and we play a good team like Memphis, we knew that all three phases had to play together, just knowing who they are, what they've done and how they've played the whole season." USF head coach Charlie Strong said after the game. "We just could never get any rhythm at all going on offense and with that, it then takes a toll on your defense and eventually you just get beat down."
On offense, Memphis controlled the tempo of the game through the legs of senior running back Patrick Taylor Jr.. The Tigers total time of possession dominated that of the Bulls and in total Memphis controlled the ball on offense for a whole quarter more than South Florida. Taylor rushed for 89 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
For South Florida (6-5, 4-3) it was most certainly a game to forget and they must do that quickly with #8 UCF (10-1, 7-0) on the cards next weekend.
Jordan McCloud was kept out of the endzone for the first time since taking the starting job. He finished the game 13-of-19 passing for 166 yards, he also carried the ball for a team-leading 21 attempts for 72 yards. Jordan Cronkrite was the only USF player to score a touchdown in the game in the third quarter, and the senior finished with 74 yards on 14 carries.
USF was just as bad on defense, sophomore cornerback Bentlee Sanders led the team with nine tackles and one for a loss but the Bulls defense didn't force a single sack or turnover and rarely looked like they had any pressure of Memphis quarterback Brady White.
After forcing a three-and-out on defense, Memphis seized the initial lead on its six-play, 75-yard opening drive that was capped with a 2-yard touchdown run by senior Patrick Taylor Jr. to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter, and with a pretty defensive showing from both teams, there were no more scores in the quarter.
On its first drive of the second quarter, USF marched the ball all the way down inside the Memphis half but two back-to-back sacks on Jordan McCloud put a halt to that drive at it was left to kicker Coby Weiss to put the ball through the posts from 34 yards. Memphis however quickly bounced back out into a big lead with another rushing touchdown this time from quarterback Brady White. Another 28-yard field goal from Weiss would close out the first half with a scoreline of 14-6.
South Florida looked like it had come out in the second half with more purpose on offense and with a long time-consuming drive of eleven plays the majority of the third quarter seemingly just shot away before Jordan Cronkrite took the ball over into the endzone from 3 yards out to cut the Memphis lead down to just two points. Charlie Strong opted to go for the two-point conversion and tie up the game but Memphis was ready and with Bryce Hall and unstoppable force all game the senior was on hand to drag McCloud down behind the line of scrimmage and put an end to that attempt. Taylor Jr, would run home another touchdown late on in the third quarter and Memphis kicker Riley Patterson would kick a fourth-quarter field goal of 38 yards to finish the game 24-12 to Memphis.
Next week, USF wraps up its 2019 season with a War on I-4 matchup at rival UCF in Orlando next Friday. The Bulls are in need of a win against their rivals with a Bowl place potentially up for grabs. Currently, the Bulls are projected to face Tulane (6-5, 2-5) in the Beef O'Brady's Bowl.
