Season 2, Game 12: Carnegie Mellon at Idaho State

The Cherry on Top: Tartans Leave FCS Victorious at Idaho State
Carnegie Mellon excelled in its final FCS contest, throttling Idaho State on the road, 48-20

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

POCATELLO, Idaho -- If Saturday was Carnegie Mellon’s final audition for the NCAA Division I FBS committee, it’s safe to say it passed with flying colors.

Behind four touchdowns of 40 yards or more, Carnegie Mellon left the FCS ranks on a high note with an explosive 48-20 victory over Idaho State this afternoon at Holt Arena. The Tartans compiled 405 yards of total offense and scored three return touchdowns in what was their top performance of a two-year FCS tenure.

“I’m just really proud of these guys,” said second-year head coach John Elliott. “This was the perfect way to end this season. We showed tremendous growth throughout the year, and really throughout the last two seasons. To put forth a performance like this and take it to our opponent is proof that what we’re doing here is working, and it’s exciting to go into next season with this sort of momentum.”

Carnegie Mellon (5-7) started off with a strong drive, ending with a Jim Manning touchdown run from 18 yards out on the option. The visitors put together another long stretch with the ball at the end of the frame, only to see Justin Keyes throw behind Ali Concepcion and right into the arms of D.J. Clark.

Idaho State (3-9) answered early in the second quarter with a Matt Gutierrez 18-yard touchdown pass to Josh Barnett, but Manning then ran back the ensuing kickoff 82 yards for a score. After a Bengals field goal, the freshman tailback added a one-yard run with 1:27 remaining in the half to make it 20-10, setting off a stretch of 20 points before halftime.

Seconds after receiving the kickoff, Gutierrez connected with Akilah Lacey on a 65-yard bomb to pull ISU within three at 20-17. CMU then went three-and-out with its next possession to give the ball back to the visitors, but Devon Elliott forced Gutierrez out of the game on the Bengals’ next drive. That proved to be a huge swing in momentum, as backup Luke Butler missed a wide-open Lacey and found Calvin Burton, who ran the interception back 83 yards for a touchdown as time expired.

Keyes added onto the Tartans lead with a 43-yard keeper on the option in the third quarter, then Gutierrez – who returned after halftime – became the second ISU quarterback to throw a pick six to Burton. Burton ran this one back 45 yards to essentially seal the game, with Robert Riley’s two-yard plunge in the fourth quarter providing the cherry on top.

Manning finished with 195 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries to go along with his 82-yard kick return score. Riley provided 49 yards in his final collegiate contest, while Keyes threw for 104 yards on 6-of-11 passing and added 57 on the ground.

Gutierrez went 15-of-32 for 320 yards and two touchdowns, as well as the aforementioned pick six by Burton. Lacey caught six passes for 207 yards and a score in defeat.

Carnegie Mellon finishes its two-year FCS stint with a combined record of 6-18, and is slated to begin the 2008 season as a FBS independent.

Big way to finish out the season! Manning again just getting run into the ground, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get the win, aha. Definitely a big season, especially after that midseason lull where things were looking dire for a few weeks. Great to see the team respond positively and really build some momentum heading into next season.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I finally found my footing with this bunch after that lull, even though I still had my struggles throwing the ball. Manning might not have any knee cartilage left after his time at CMU, lol.

Hoping I can bring in a solid recruiting class in the off-season, because I'll definitely need it with the step-up in level!

Thanks! Hoping there are a decent amount of recruits I can target with A+/A/A- awareness ratings. *crosses fingers*

                Burton collects national honors, again
After running back two interceptions for touchdowns in Carnegie Mellon’s 48-20 win at Idaho State, freshman cornerback Calvin Burton was named Coca-Cola NCAA Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced this afternoon.

Burton becomes the first player this season to claim the weekly honor twice, as he was previously bestowed it after a 22-21 win over Idaho State. The freshman had four tackles, two interceptions, and two scores versus the Bengals last Saturday – also netting the No. 1 spot in SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays – and tallied three tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and score against the Sycamores on Week 2.

He is one of two Tartans who have earned national honors this season, alongside first-year tailback Jim Manning, who was named NCAA Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 321 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries against Villanova on Week 9.

                Jackson commits to Pitt
Three-star outside linebacker and Carnegie Mellon recruiting target Antoine Jackson (Garfield Heights, Ohio) has announced his commitment to Pitt, Tartan Tidbits has learned.

Jackson, who visited CMU on Nov. 10 when it played Hofstra, pledged to the Panthers following his official visit. He was also considering Notre Dame.

CMU’s in-season recruiting class will consist of wide receiver Stephen Carter (Williamsport, Pa.) and offensive tackle Jason Baker (Regina, Saskatchewan).

Wisconsin to appear on 2008 schedule
Carnegie Mellon has two of its games set for the 2008 season as it has signed a contract to play Wisconsin next year, Tartan Tidbits reports.

The Tartans will receive $250,000 from the Badgers, while the exact date is not confirmed, it is likely the game will be played near the beginning of the season.

CMU is also slated to continue its yearly cross-town rivalry series with Pitt at Heinz Field.

Super Sophomore Tebow Captures Heisman Trophy
The Florida quarterback becomes the first sophomore ever to win the award

Florida sophomore Tim Tebow has thrown for 45 touchdowns in his first year as the starter.
NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- History was made at Nokia Theatre in Times Square on Saturday night.

Despite being upset by Arkansas in the SEC Championship Game last weekend, Florida sophomore quarterback Tim Tebow was bestowed with the Heisman Memorial Trophy, becoming the first second-year player to win the award.

Just three finalists were invited to this year’s Heisman ceremony after five attended last season, with Tebow (1,612 points) being out Texas junior runningback Jamaal Charles (1,271) and West Virginia redshirt junior quarterback Pat White (1,218). White may have had the last laugh, however, as his Mountaineers will be playing in the BCS Championship Game next month following the Gators’ aforementioned 21-14 loss to the Razorbacks, and the Longhorns’ 35-31 upset defeat to Colorado in the Big 12 title game.

“I’m just so thankful that God has blessed with the ability to play at this level and to play with this group of teammates,” said Tebow in his victory speech. “Although it’s disappointing that we will not be playing for a championship next month, everything happens for a reason and I wouldn’t trade this season for the world.”

The sophomore southpaw compiled a 174.2 quarterback rating, 3,266 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions through the air, and 237 yards and two scores on the ground. He is the seventh quarterback in the last eight seasons to win the Heisman, joining Brady Quinn of Notre Dame (2006), Matt Leinart of USC (2004), Jason White of Oklahoma (2003), Carson Palmer of USC (2002), Eric Crouch of Nebraska (2001), and Chris Weinke of Florida State (2000).

Tebow is the third Florida quarterback to capture the honor, alongside Steve Spurrier (1966) and Danny Wuerffel (1996).

                    Final Heisman Voting
                    Tim Tebow, So., QB, Florida | 310 | 260 | 162 | 1,612
                    Jamaal Charles, Jr., HB, Texas | 206 | 215 | 223 | 1,271
                    Pat White, R-Jr., QB, West Virginia | 198 | 196 | 232 | 1,218

If West Virginia wins the title, I will be boycotting this save file. Funny how Tebow won the Heisman, I thought we would see Florida claim the title. Surprising defeat but NCAA loves a nice upheaval of the polls late in the season.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting both of the top teams to lose in that spot. Maybe one so that WVU would slide in because the sim engine loves them in these games, but them facing off against an 11-1 Utah team is an interesting wrinkle.

                          As for the result...

#2 Utah becomes the most unlikely champion of the BCS era, defeating #1 West Virginia in New Orleans, 31-28

NEW ORELANS, La. (AP) -- After falling to Oregon State, 35-7, in the second week of the season, Utes fans couldn’t dream of a returning to a BCS bowl game, let alone the national championship in New Orleans. But that’s why they play the games.

Both teams in search of their first national title, it was No. 2 Utah who would prevail, as the Utes topped No. 1 West Virginia, 31-28, on Tuesday evening in the BCS National Championship Game. The Mountain West champions would race out to a 21-7 lead and held on from there, forcing an incomplete pass from Pat White with 1:11 to go to seal the victory.

Senior quarterback Brian Johnson was named Most Valuable player after tossing three first-half touchdowns. Johnson threw for 176 yards on 19-of-31 passing, while Steve Slaton ran for 143 yards and three scores in the defeat.

West Virginia was one of two undefeated teams remaining in the nation. Tulsa was victorious in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl to finish as the lone unbeaten FBS team.

Love seeing the Utes bring home the title. I have a soft spot for Utah. They gave one of my former Youth Group kids (Jordan Gross) a scholarship and made him into a 4 year starter, 1st Round Draft pick and a Pro Bowler for the Carolina Panthers.

One of the best kids with a huge heart that does a ton for the small town we both grew up in.

So nostalgic to see these names again. Tebow, Devone Bess, John David Booty.. It almost makes me want to pick up the old game and have a little play with it again.
