Gable and Patterson should make Idaho a pretty solid team in a couple of years when they're eligible - that may make for an interesting non-conference matchup in 2009. But yeah, it's very annoying that they all went to Texas Tech. I'm pretty sure Luck was the only one that had the Red Raiders as his favorite from the start - RG3 was a LSU lean, and I think Pryor liked Michigan?

To top that, they signed two more quarterbacks who had higher ratings so they were named B.J. Daniels (former USF quarterback) and Seth Doege (ironically went to TTU in real life). I'd hope they're a lock to transfer so that they have a chance at making the league, but regardless it's frustrating. Pretty sure when I did the recruiting class in NCAA 07 before the game switch, Luck went to A&M, RG3 went to LSU, and Pryor went to Boston College with A.J. Green.

Lions Hope Henne is Long-Awaited Franchise Savior
The Lions selected Michigan quarterback Chad Henne with the number one selection in the 2008 NFL Draft

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. (AP) -- The Detroit Lions have pinned their hopes on a Michigan Man redirecting the franchise’s trajectory.

Detroit moved up from the 13th overall selection to swap picks with the Minnesota Vikings, and chose Michigan quarterback Chad Henne with the top selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. Henne becomes the sixth quarterback in the last eight seasons to go first overall, after defensive ends Mario Williams and Gaines Adams were picked first back-to-back over the last two years.

Henne was one of three quarterbacks to go in the first round. Boston College’s Matt Ryan was selected with the fifth overall selection by the Cleveland Browns, who were unimpressed with last year’s first rounder Brady Quinn, and the oft-injured JaMarcus Russell of LSU was picked 11th overall by the Oakland Raiders.

A strong class of runningbacks was led off by Arkansas’ Darren McFadden, who went second to the Miami Dolphins. West Virginia’s Steve Slaton was selected sixth overall by the Atlanta Falcons, and East Carolina’s Chris Johnson made it three runningbacks in the top 10 by going ninth to the New England Patriots. Boise State’s Ian Johnson and Texas’ Jamaal Charles also were picked in the first round, respectively going 17th to the Jacksonville Jaguars and 27th to the Cincinnati Bengals.

Lmao, even in a completely new universe, Oakland still finds a way to get Jamarcus Russell. Will be interesting to see how Matty Ice turns things around in Cleveland as well! Weird to see this alternate universe haha, it gives me the willies thinking about if things had actually happened this way haha. Also, won't that be fun to see Texas Tech have 3 99 rated QBs in the same draft class hahaha. If nothing else, you could always try and take them over and switch Pryor to WR since that where he ended up in the NFL anyways. Looking forward to seeing your first true year in Division I, you got a solid recruiting class to shore up the roster so you should definitely still be competitive right away!

It's funny because I actually had to nerf the real JaMarcus Russell's ratings since he's in Madden 08, and create him in NCAA 08 - and then he still ends up on Oakland! Was a little shocked that Cleveland went with Matt Ryan, but Quinn didn't progress at all and I think he didn't win the starting job out of preseason.

I definitely don't want Texas Tech to have three 99 QBs in the draft class, lol. My hope is to get one of them to transfer at least, because two of them will redshirt more than likely behind Graham Harrell, and then the one that remains should (hopefully) declare for the draft early. But if transfers don't happen after the first season, I'll just take matters into my own hands.

I'm excited to get this new season going here! My depth is still pretty lousy but I don't have a ton of holdovers left from the first season that are getting significant time, and adding the guys I did recruit with playing in the MAC - I should be competitive in quite a few games this first year.

Love seeing Ian Johnson go in the 1st Round. I wish he had gotten more of a chance at the NFL level in the real world.

I also had a chuckle to myself when I see JaMarcus still go to the Raiders even here. lol. I remember that always being an issue with the older games when it came to recruiting quarterbacks, a team in need would always put time into the top guys and end up with them all. I feel your frustration on that one.

I don't know if you're into podcasts, but The Solid Verbal did an episode on the 2007 Fiesta Bowl and I didn't realize that Chris Myers totally blew up Ian's cover when he proposed to his girlfriend after the game. Was a little shocking though to see him not get much of a chance at the next level.

Yeah I didn't realize that was such a big issue either. I know in the previous recruiting class when using NCAA 07, Arizona State and Florida both loaded up on quarterbacks instead of them being spread around more, but with that class I didn't create anyone myself. I hope this is just a blip and won't happen every year where I create multiple players at the same position, but if it does continue to happen then I may have to control some bigger schools for off-season recruiting to avoid the stack.

Definitely following along. I’ve debated doing a similar dynasty of my own. I loved ncaa 07 and played it for years. For the draft classes, do players get re rated where some bust, or are the best college players going to be the highest rated?

Appreciate you following! It's somewhat random how players' ratings end up being when exporting the draft classes from NCAA - I've seen in the past that some 99 overall guys in NCAA can have a huge year and then be slotted as a sixth round pick in the low to mid 70s in Madden, while another guy at low 90s in NCAA becomes a first round pick with low 80s ratings.

I don't really know if there's a certain way how they determine that - for example, Darren McFadden was injured in the NCAA 08 sim for half the season, eclipsed 1,000 yards barely, still came out for the draft, and is the highest rated rookie in the draft class. Colt Brennan of Hawaii won the Heisman in the sim, was rated 99 overall at the end, and could only be rated as a fifth-round pick. My hope going forward is to get as many "real" guys into the NFL with the creating and renaming of recruiting classes, with the recruits I do actually create have the best chance at excelling at both the collegiate and pro levels.

Champion Chargers Snag Woodson in Post-Draft Free Agency
The San Diego Chargers continue making free agency splashes by adding cap casualty Charles Woodson

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (AP) -- The rich get richer.

After adding All-Pro talent such as defensive ends Julius Peppers and Dwight Freeney and safety Roy Williams to their defense in pre-draft free agency, the San Diego Chargers grabbed the biggest target of the post-draft free agency period with the signing of cornerback Charles Woodson.

Woodson was a late cap casualty for the Indianapolis Colts, who also let go of Phillip Buchanon. The Chargers took advantage and signed him to a one-year deal, as he will replace the departed Quentin Jammer (Packers) as the team’s top cornerback.

The Detroit Lions signed veteran quarterback Billy Volek to a two-year deal to mentor and back up first overall selection Chad Henne.

A full overview of the pre-draft free agency period can be found below.

For the 3 QB issue, from my experience, 1 will transfer out for sure, typically to a smaller power 5 team. If pyror stays and is not the starter I’d recommend making him a WR. It’s a passing offense anyways, and he was a WR in real life.

by Joe Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

                          Carlson, Elliott named team captains
In its first season of FBS play, Carnegie Mellon has announced that senior wide receiver Pete Carlson and defensive tackle Devon Elliott will be the team’s captains.

Carlson has been the Tartans’ leading receiver the last two seasons, accumulating 120 catches for 1,110 yards and three touchdowns. Elliott led CMU with eight sacks as a sophomore in 2006 and has started 30 games over his three-year career.

A third captain will be chosen on a rotating basis.
                          Carnegie Mellon adds three walk-ons
The Tartans have announced that they have added three walk-on players to fill out the roster in fullback Brandon Brewer (Allentown, Pa.), outside linebacker Luke Harvey (Jeannette, Pa.), and middle linebacker Bryan Seward (Pittsburgh, Pa.).

Brewer, a six-foot-two, 222-pound fullback from William Allen High School, will back up redshirt sophomore Korey Harper. He received scholarship offers from Bloomsburg and Lincoln University following his senior year, but enrolled at CMU in the summer.

Harvey, a six-foot-two, 208-pound linebacker from Jeannette High School, was high school teammates with five-star quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who signed with Texas Tech in February. He will provide depth on the outside behind a bevy of underclassmen.

Seward, a six-foot-two, 240-pound linebacker from Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School, has two years of eligibility after playing a pair of seasons at NCAA Division III school Wabash College. He recorded 62 tackles and three sacks in two seasons with the Little Giants.
Tartans target 15 in in-season recruiting portion
Carnegie Mellon has narrowed in on 14 three-star prospects and one two-star recruit in the in-season recruiting period.

The Tartans have extended scholarship offers to quarterbacks Tyrone McMillan (West New York, N.J.), Randy Houston (Rochester, N.Y.), Bryan Williams (Charlottesville, Va.), and Kedrick Goodwin (Allentown, Pa.), tailback Marcus Cooley (Hanover Park, Ill.), wide receiver Joey Pruitt (Glenpool, Okla.), offensive tackle Mike Horn (Madeira, Ohio), guard Brett Van (New Castle, Pa.), center Joey Muhammad (Winnipeg, Manitoba), defensive ends Terrance Hurst (Lodi, N.J.) and Malcom Crenshaw (Rolla, Mo.), defensive tackles Matt Burnsides (Hyattsville, Md.), Zach Nugent (Westerville, Ohio), and Leonard Williams (Lombard, Ill.), and linebacker Ryan Thomas (Perth Amboy, N.J.).

CMU is hoping to add defensive line depth, a center that can start right away, and a quarterback to compete with sophomore starter Justin Keyes.

Young Carnegie Mellon squad went 5-7 in its second of two seasons in NCAA Division I FCS competition

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Now the real fun begins.

Carnegie Mellon athletic director Daniel Corrigan announced at the time of his hiring in January of 2006 that his athletic department would be making the unheard of leap from NCAA Division III to Division I competition. That included a transition from Division III to Division I FCS to Division I FBS football, which is completed this season.

Three years ago, the Tartans were playing schools such as Case Western Reserve University and Grove City College. Now they’re up against national power Wisconsin in week one.

“There’s definitely those moments where you kind of stand back and take it all in,” said third-year head coach John Elliott, who was picked by Corrigan to help CMU in its transitional phase. “Like when we get out there next month at Camp Randall Stadium to play Wisconsin, we’ll certainly take some time to soak the moment up. No one thought this was possible – I myself had reservations about it at first. But we’ve done a great job building to get to this moment, and while the results on the field haven’t always been the prettiest, I believe we’re ready for this.”

The Tartans enter their maiden FBS voyage with another young team, as 17 of 22 projected starters being freshmen or sophomores. From their new batch of players, seven – tight end David Young, offensive tackles Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker, defensive end David Brown, middle linebacker Mark Toth, and safeties Todd Andriano and Elvis Washington – are slated to start, and an eighth in Jon Foster will assume kicking duties.

Sophomore tailback Jim Manning is John Elliott’s top offensive weapon, exploding onto the scene with 1,291 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 203 carries as a rookie. Fellow second-year Justin Keyes will continue to start under center after an up-and-down freshman season (89.7 QB rtg., 125-243, 1,179 yards, 3 TD, 8 INT), but he has a new receiver to throw to in redshirt junior wide receiver Kevin Cousins, who caught one pass in 2006 for Penn State. Opposite of him will be two-year starter Pete Carlson, who tallied 51 receptions for 544 yards and two touchdowns last year.

Anthony Tremblay and Jason Baker bookend a solid offensive line, with sophomore guards Matt Fitch and Eric Fraser serving as the base. Senior center Rob Hill is the weak spot from a talent standpoint, but should provide veteran leadership with the underclassmen surrounding him.

“I’m excited to see what Jim (Manning) can do for an encore,” said Elliott. “We’ll lean on him, while getting Nate (Satele) and Tramon (McCollum) some touches out of the backfield. We’re also thrilled to have Kevin (Cousins) eligible after sitting out last year, he should give us a much-needed boost on the outside and help Justin (Keyes) improve in the passing game.”

Defensively, John Elliott moved three-star middle linebacker David Brown to defensive end, where he will start opposite of sophomore Andrew Miller. Senior captain Devon Elliott hasn’t missed a game in his collegiate career and started the last 30, while junior Walter Hunter moves into a starting role after rotating in as a reserve last season. The linebacker corps welcomes back sophomore starters Matt Johnson and Aaron Crosby, with first-year Mark Toth taking ownership of the middle.

The strength of the CMU defense could reside in the secondary, however, despite its youth. Sophomore cornerbacks Calvin Burton and Hayden Temple picked off four passes each, with Burton earning NCAA Defensive Player of the Week honors twice during the 2007 season. Raymond Cooper, a senior, started as a sophomore and part of his junior year, and three-star recruit Erik Sellers should contribute in nickel and dime packages. The safeties, Todd Andriano and Elvis Washington, will start right away as freshmen and have been some of the most impressive players in fall camp.

“We have a chance to have a really good secondary,” said Elliott. “The talent is obvious there with Calvin (Burton), Hayden (Temple), and then (Raymond Cooper) as the veteran. But adding guys like Todd (Andriano) and Elvis (Washington) in the back make us so much more athletic, and allow us to better match up with some of the teams on our schedule.”

Freshman Jon Foster replaces the erratic Justin Thompson at kicker, and senior Brad Jones returns for his third year as a punter. Manning and Carlson will return kicks and punts for the Tartans.

CMU might be arriving into FBS competition and the Mid-American Conference (MAC) at the right time, with mid-major football expecting parity to reign supreme despite Utah’s march to the national championship this past January. The MAC in particular is looked at as the weakest of the FBS conferences, outside of the newly promoted Ivy League.

“I think we can make a splash in this first season,” said Elliott. “We would love to rattle off eight or nine wins and shock everyone, but that’s not really realistic yet. But we can be competitive against everyone we face, sneak a couple wins here and there, and continue building on the foundation we established a couple years ago so that when we’re deeper in the timeline, we’re a consistent contender for MAC titles.”

May be a bit of a stretch but I think you could have 10 theoretically winnable games there (besides Pitt and Wisconsin), so if you can even go .500 in those you'll end up with another 5-7 season, which under the circumstances so far I feel like would be really impressive. Looking forward to see if Keyes can make a step forward this season with a big transfer target to throw to, because Manning is already a proven commodity so having another option offensively to keep the defense off balance will be key.

Mac is a toss up, you never know who might be good and who isn't. Central Michigan actually won a National Title in my current New Era Dynasty. Miami of Ohio has been a consistent Top-25 team the past 4 out of 5 years. Ohio was really good for awhile too.

Hopefully you can manage 4-5 wins in conference games and lets' face it Duke is horrible. I think winning 6 games and making it to a bowl game isn't out of the question. Looking forward to the kickoff with the Badgers..
