Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

by Joe Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

Burton named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week
For the third time in his young career, sophomore cornerback Calvin Burton was named NCAA Defensive Player of the Week, this time capturing the accolades after a historic performance in Carnegie Mellon’s 45-35 win over Buffalo.

Burton tied the NCAA single-game record with five interceptions against the Bulls, adding two tackles and a forced fumble. The five interceptions leads the nation, and he has nine total in 16 career games.

The Edgewood, Md. product first claimed DPOW honors on Sept. 10, 2007 after collecting three tackles, two interceptions, a forced fumble, and touchdown in a 22-21 win over Rhode Island. On Nov. 26, 2007, he picked up the plaudits for a second time, tallying four tackles, two interceptions, and two touchdowns in a 48-20 victory at Idaho State.

      Manning among rushing leaders
Starting tailback Jim Manning has shown little signs of a sophomore slump through four games, ranking fifth nationally in rushing yards with 631.

Manning has accumulated his 631 yards on 102 carries, adding six touchdowns – four coming in the 45-35 win against Buffalo last Saturday. Ahead of him on the rushing list currently is Ohio State’s Chris Wells (786), Arkansas’ Felix Jones (698), Ohio’s Joel Scipio (670), and Oregon’s Jonathan Stewart (659). The tailback is 78 yards away from eclipsing 2,000 in his career, and has 16 touchdowns on the ground.

Burnsides moves to top three, sets official visit with Carnegie Mellon
Three-star defensive tackle Matt Burnsides (Hyattsville, Md.) has trimmed his college list to three schools, and will make his official visit to Carnegie Mellon on Oct. 18 when the Tartans play Miami (Ohio).

CMU has emerged as the overwhelming favorite for Burnsides’ commitment, with Louisville and West Virginia training. The Tartans are set to lose defensive captain Devon Elliott to graduation following the season, leaving the Northwestern High School product an easy starting spot to slide into on the roster.

Williams keeps CMU in top five
Three-star quarterback Bryan Williams (Charlottesville, Va.) has kept Carnegie Mellon in the hunt for his service as he cut his college list to five schools this weekend.

Williams, a six-foot-four, 210-pound signal-caller from Charlottesville High School, is a West Virginia lean currently, with the Tartans trailing the Mountaineers. Louisville, Virginia Tech, and Tennessee also have made Williams’ top five.

      Four drop Tartans from lists
Four in-season recruiting targets have removed Carnegie Mellon from consideration over the weekend: three-star quarterback Kedrick Goodwin (Allentown, Pa.), three-star defensive tackles Zach Nugent (Westerville, Ohio) and Leonard Williams (Lombard, Ill.), and two-star linebacker Ryan Thomas (Perth Amboy, N.J.).

Goodwin, a six-foot-two, 215-pound signal-caller from Parkland High School, will move forward with a top five of Penn State, Ohio State, Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech. He was one of four quarterback targets CMU was pursuing.

Nugent, a six-foot-three, 270-pound lineman from Westerville High School, is considering Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Notre Dame, and West Virginia. Williams, a six-foot-one, 285-pound tackle from Glenbard East High School, has Nebraska, Iowa, Michigan, Notre Dame, and Louisville as his top five.

Thomas, a six-foot-three, 229-pound linebacker from Perth Amboy High School, is deciding between Ohio State, Michigan, Louisville, West Virginia, and Virginia Tech.

Carnegie Mellon Tartans (1-3, 1-0 MAC) at Central Michigan Chippewas (2-2, 0-0 MAC)
        Saturday, October 4, 2008 | 12:30 PM (ET)
Mount Pleasant, Mich. – Kelly Shorts Stadium | No television

Team Overview (C+ overall, B offense, C defense)
Central Michigan has opened the season with a 2-2 record, knocking off The Citadel (49-7) and Army (37-11) at home. The Chippewas fell at Kansas in the opener, 38-35, after being outscored 10-0 in the fourth quarter, and were tied with Purdue at halftime, 21-21, before ultimately falling 56-35.

CMU features an explosive offense, headlined by the trio of redshirt junior quarterback Dan LeFevour, senior tailback Ontario Sneed, and fourth-year junior receiver Bryan Anderson. All three made the All-MAC First Team last season and are off to good starts in 2008. LeFevour (160.7 QB rtg., 73-118, 1,084 yards, 12 TD, 7 INT) is a true dual-threat that is a perfect fit for the Chippewas’ spread look, and Sneed (75 carries, 554 yards, 7 TD; 11 catches, 167 yards, 2 TD) can contribute in all facets as the primary back. Anderson (15 catches, 190 yards, 1 TD) had 86 catches and 14 scores last season, and has redshirt juniors Jean Pitts (18 catches, 265 yards, 5 TD) and Chris Starkey (9 catches, 153 yards, 2 TD) to take the pressure off of him.

The defense also features three All-MAC picks from a year ago in redshirt juniors Frank Zombo (second), Josh Gordy (first), and Calvin Hissong (first). Zombo, a defensive end, has 12 tackles and a sack thus far, while defensive backs Gordy and Hissong both have a sack and interception to their names. The linebacker corps is battle-tested with three fifth-year seniors in Jonathan Lapsley (17 tackles), Barron Miles (22 tackles, 2 INT), and Tim Brazzel (9 tackles, 1 sack, 2 INT).

Junior kicker Andrew Aguila is a weak spot on the team, with just a 36-percent conversion rate on field goals last season. He has missed both of his attempts this year while connecting on all 22 extra points. Freshman Mark Cook (16 punts, 683 yards, 35.5 avg.) is the team’s punter, and both Sneed (13 kick returns, 388 yards; 12 punt returns, 79 yards) and Anderson (6 kick returns, 146 yards) return kicks for the Chippewas.

While they have some talent, I remember LeFevour tearing it up for a few years, this still feels like a winnable game to me. I think if you can keep the ball on the ground and keep it away from their offense then we could be going for two in a row! On the recruiting side, obviously, QB is a need right now: between McMillan and Williams on your board, which two looks to be the bigger prize right now?

I remember loving LeFevour in college and thinking he was going to be a pretty good NFL quarterback - shows how good my scouting eye is! As for this matchup, I entered the season thinking CMU was the best MAC team on my schedule so I have a tough task ahead of me. Their offense is littered with talent, and I don't think I have quite enough pieces yet on defense to hold them down. It'll probably come down to getting off to a good start, controlling clock with my offense, and Keyes having a good game with little to no mistakes.

As for my future quarterback prospects, I think McMillan would be a bigger get, but I like my chances at snagging Williams more. McMillan is more athletic and would allow me some more flexibility with the offense, while Williams is a traditional pocket passer. I've been putting more points towards McMillan since Williams' big sticking point is academics, and I have a little more ground to make up to secure an official visit with McMillan compared to Williams.

Hate double posting, but not only will I have the Central Michigan game up later today, I've also taken Carnegie Mellon to the baseball diamond: https://forums.operationsports.com/f...-baseball.html

That report won't be nearly as detailed as this one, but I found that game over the weekend and figured it'd be fun to add baseball to the mix. Already burned through part of the season in the file so I'll have something to report on should I go through a hiatus playing the actual game. Feel free to follow that also if you'd like!

by Jayson Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Central Michigan raced out to a 21-0 lead through 16 minutes, setting the foundation for a comfortable 49-21 win over Carnegie Mellon this afternoon in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.

One week after picking off Buffalo’s Drew Willy eight times, Carnegie Mellon (1-4, 1-1 MAC) failed to contain Central Michigan (3-2, 1-0 MAC) star quarterback Dan LeFevour, who threw for 231 yards and three touchdowns on 16-of-24 passing. Backup Brian Bunner came in during the fourth quarter and added a touchdown of his own, while the rushing attack headed by Marcel Archer and Ontario Sneed combined for 123 yards and two scores on 18 carries.

“(Central Michigan) is loaded with talent offensively and we knew that we would have to force some early turnovers,” said third-year head coach John Elliott. “We didn’t do that and after falling behind by three scores, it was too deep of a hole to dig ourselves out of. I was pleased with our running game, particularly Nate (Satele) who really ran the ball well. But we have to figure out the problems in our passing attack if we’re going to have success this season. I believe in Justin (Keyes) going forward and don’t plan on making a change.”

Elliott’s public support in his sophomore signal-caller comes after Keyes threw two interceptions – one being a 50-yard pick six in the fourth quarter – and completed just 7-of-15 passes overall. He did contribute 61 yards and a score on the ground, adding to a rushing attack that combined for 238 yards between the quarterback, freshman Nate Satele (94 yards) and sophomore Jim Manning (83 yards).

Manning’s two-yard plunge with 8:32 remaining in the third quarter kept the difference at two scores and shifted the momentum in favor of the visitors. But after a defensive stop keyed by a Matt Johnson sack of LeFevour, Keyes threw an interception to put the ball back in the Chippewas’ hands, and Archer finished off a long drive with a 10-yard scamper in the opening minute of the final stanza.

Carnegie Mellon gets right back into it at home on Thursday night when it hosts Bowling Green.

Was trailing in the 4th your reason behind limiting Manning's carries and give Steele a chance to shine a little? I am curious moving forward if Steele can produce some games like that maybe it's time to introduce some more Triple Option attacks or something cause poor Keyes realy hasn't shown the ability to throw the ball.

Yikes, that CMU offense did what it came there to do... score points and chew bubble gum, and they were all out of gum. Doesn't help with the turnovers from the QB position, I had some high hopes for Keyes this season that he might show some progression but that doesn't look to be the case. Might need to cut your losses and test of of those freshman out provided you can convince them to sign.

That was a big reason, yeah, but I also like to get Satele some early touches to see if he can be a nice change-of-pace option to Manning. Against Central Michigan, he broke off a couple of big runs with his first few carries and as Manning didn't have the same success, I figured to roll with the freshman more and he did well. He's a talented back - another three-star guy like Manning - but isn't quite as explosive as him.

As for the triple option, it's an option for next year's offense. I'm running mostly a pro style, I-formation attack right now, and I don't think it would be realistic to revamp things in the middle of the season - even with Keyes' struggles. There could be a storyline in there where Coach Elliott lets go of his OC should be retain his job, and then hires a triple option guy for the next season.

Best offense I've seen this year, and that includes the Wisconsin game. They were just so methodical and I had no answer for anything that they were doing. I was expecting some progression from Keyes too and his overall is higher than what it was as a freshman, but I can't quite get the right handle on his game. There's been a few interceptions that have come from user error, but he's off the mark a decent amount as well. Whoever I end up getting in recruiting will definitely have a crack at the job next season unless I can turn it around with Keyes.

                          Fitch returns from injury
Sophomore guard Matt Fitch will return to the starting lineup this Thursday night against Bowling Green after missing the previous three games with a bruised shoulder.

Fitch, a native of Sylvania, Ohio, has been a starter on the Tartan offensive line from his very first collegiate game last year at Penn. He was one of three three-star prospects CMU signed in the 2007 recruiting class, alongside tailback Jim Manning and linebacker Matt Johnson.

Crenshaw, Muhammad list CMU in top five
Carnegie Mellon has made the cut for a pair of three-star targets, remaining in the top five for defensive end Malcom Crenshaw (Rolla, Mo.) and center Joey Muhammad (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

Crenshaw, a six-foot-five, 255-pound product from Rolla High School, has Texas A&M as his favorite, with LSU, Nebraska, Arkansas, and the Tartans trailing. He would likely be an immediate starter on the CMU defensive line, or at the very least see plenty of time as a rotational piece.

Muhammad, a six-foot, 290-pound lineman from Grant Park High School, lists Ohio State as the favorite for his services, with the Tartans in second. Penn State, Michigan, and Boise State sit further behind for the three-star center, who would be a day-one starter for CMU.

Hurst, Horn drop Tartans from consideration
Two three-star targets have dropped Carnegie Mellon from consideration in defensive end Terrance Hurst (Lodi, N.J.) and offensive tackle Mike Horn (Madeira, Ohio).

Hurst, a six-foot-four, 252-pound pass rusher from Lodi High School, will go forward with a top five of Penn State, Virginia Tech, Louisville, West Virginia, and Ohio State. The Nittany Lions are currently the leaders to land his commitment.

Horn, a six-foot-six, 320-pound tackle from Madeira High School, is considering West Virginia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, and Virginia Tech. The Mountaineers are currently the favorite for his services.

Team Overview (B- overall, B- offense, C+ defense)
Bowling Green has opened up the season with four of five games at home, and owns a 3-2 overall record. The Falcons were up 17-3 in the fourth quarter against Boston College before giving up 17 unanswered points to lost, and last week against Eastern Michigan were down 50-21 in the final frame before scoring 16 points to make the score look more respectable.

After leading the nation in interceptions two seasons ago, redshirt senior Anthony Turner has enjoyed an excellent final season (161.5 QB rtg., 115-181, 1,602 yards, 16 TD, 5 INT) at quarterback. Fourth-year junior Chris Bullock (62 carries, 389 yards, 4 TD; 11 catches, 140 yards, 1 TD) was named to the All-MAC Second Team last year after accumulating 1,200 rushing yards and 16 combined touchdowns. On the outside, redshirt senior captain Corey Partridge (28 catches, 349 yards, 4 TD), fourth-year junior Freddie Barnes (16 catches, 363 yards, 3 TD), and junior Tyrone Pronty (30 catches, 289 yards, 5 TD) will provide the Carnegie Mellon secondary with a challenge.

Three of BGSU’s four starting defensive linemen are redshirt seniors, and eight of the 11 starters are in their final year of eligibility. The line is led by Diyral Briggs (22 tackles, 1 sack), and the linebacking corps are headed by fifth-year senior Erique Dozier (31 tackles, 1 sack, 1 FF), who had seven interceptions and a touchdown last season. Fellow fifth-year John Haneline (31 tackles, 1 sack, 1 INT, 2 FF, 1 FR) serves as the team’s defensive captain. One of the Falcons’ opening week starters, junior defensive tackle D.J. Young, ruptured a disk two games in and has been given a medical redshirt.

Senior kicker Sinisa Vrvilo (4-7 FG, 22-22 XP) is coming off a season where he converted 10-of-20 field goals and 54-of-55 extra points. Fellow senior Nick Iovinelli (19 punts, 792 yards, 34.2 net avg.) was named to the Preseason All-MAC squad. Partridge (12 kick returns, 235 yards; 13 punt returns, 74 yards) and Pronty (9 kick returns, 220 yards; 1 punt return, 13 yards) are BGSU’s top returning threats.

I notice your in season recruiting targets list seems to dwindle as the season goes along, is that just a matter of you not letting yourself add anyone to the recruiting board after setting things up initially until the offseason or something else?

You pick 12 guys at the start, and you have to stick to it. You can’t add anyone. Eventually the prospects will faze out a top 5 and if your not in it, you can’t get them. Usually you’ll get 3-4 guys in season.
