I think 2K is the one who wanted the arcade NFL license for now.

I imagine 2K was the one who wanted the arcade license for now. I think there mindset is similar to what WWE 2K is undergoing now. The WWE game is being developed as an arcade as to give the simulation game more time to be developed. Arcade is much easier to make while simulation is very detailed and time consuming especially for the brand new consoles that are ready to release. 2K will be ready in 5 years to make a simulation football game. The next gen consoles will also have a bigger user base so they can sell to a much bigger audience then they would at the start of the next generation cycle. It takes lots of time to construct a dev team and then to create a simulation football game. Madden has been developed over 30 and it still is not simulation. In the meantime 2K can make arcade games for a couple of years. Why would 2K buy in on the expensive simulation license when they would be losing money when the game wouldn't be ready 3-4 years down the road. The next time the simulation license is up for grabs it will go to both 2K and EA.

I think the reason 2k went with the arcade wwe game was bc there was no way they would have been able to fix 2k21. Yukes left mid development and 2k was forced to put out a sub par product. They aren’t releasing 2k21 bc they need time to rebuild to the game.

Did you play WWE2K20 it was a bug riddled mess, it's definitely for a rebuild? I'm sure it will be a whole new engine with all new play mechanics.

This doesn't really make sense though. You're saying it takes time to build a sim game and that it takes time to construct a dev team and everything, but they're not gonna build a whole separate dev team for a theoretical sim football game that may or may not have the chance to even be made in 5 years when the license is up again. Whatever team they have together for this NFL title they're making right now will likely be the same team they throw at a sim title should they gain those rights 5 years from now.

Honestly it's time to just let the dream of having the NFL 2K we know and love die. We're never going to see proper NFL 2K again. The league just doesn't want it and EA Sports is too afraid of competition to let it happen ever again.

          Visual Concepts (Simulation)
          CHoops 2K (Past)
          MLB 2K (Past)
          NBA 2K
          NFL/APF 2K (Past)
          NHL 2K (Past)
          WWE 2K

          HB Studios (Simulation)
          PGA Tour 2K

          Saber Interactive (Arcade)
          NBA 2K Playground
          NFL 2K ___ground
          WWE Battleground

As soon as its TTWO/2K confirms Saber Interactive is the developer of their NFL 2K game we know exactly what were getting.

Visual Concepts isn't making the simulation game we all want. So we should request a Remastered APF 2K8.

Not really anything to worry about. We know they can’t make a “simulation” game. All it really leaves is an arcade/pick up and play type game or some type of my play league similar to NBA2K MyPark and Rec Center.

Either way this will not be the game for me but I’m glad some people will have an alternative to madden. Guess it’s another year of APF for me

Did 2k secure rights to the NFLPA? If so, I think it’s possible we get 2 titles. A playgrounds type game using both the league and players and an APF type game using the NFLPA.

If they have rights to real players and decent customization tools I think an APF type game could sell relatively well and wouldn’t be an NFL sim.

                  In a word, yes.

2K announced having secured NFLPA rights sometime last month if I recall correctly, separate from their original announcement of securing a licensing agreement with the NFL itself.

I thought I heard that but I wasn’t sure. This is bigger than the NFL license in my opinion.
Real players make a generic football game a viable option and it would make sense to maximize the return on the NFLPA investment.

Still means we probably are only going to see the NFL teams and logos in a playgrounds game

After the amount of time I have put into SuperMega Baseball 3, and the fun franchise and online play is, I’m done with worrying about AAA sports games being sims.

Like, we all know Madden is not sim. But what’s weird is that it has never ever been sim. The last few years it was the MUT and, now, Kickoff Superstar modes that got most of my time.

Once I stopped worrying about a cane developers have failed to make yet, and instead focused on fun and competition, which is the reason we love sports, I’ve enjoyed the AAA sports ganes much more. NBA Live and NHL have fantastic MyPlayer type modes that I played a ton, and now someone is finally making a fun baseball game.

I bought a PS4 just for The Show. I was raised on baseball. I remember the day my data brought me a copy of Bill Jane Baseball Abstract home, and I’ve been obsessed with sports stats ever since. The Show failed to keep my interest over two years and editions. SMB3 is more interesting and strategic than the paint by numbers sim experience some still think might sell well.

Now I probably won’t even get The Show for Xbox next year.

But I have no idea what to expect here. Arcade doesn’t make it automatically fun, as RBI and NBA Playgrounds show. I think it will probably be a very APF type game, and they will emphasize MUT and multiplayer type modes. I expect it will be designed by the football guys, but if it is the Playground guys, then my expectations will crash.

But I have no idea how someone worries about a game. I mean, what if it’s bad? Are you allowed to play something else? I’ll find games and play modes I find fun. Could someone create a franchise mode that is fun to play solo? Maybe, but no one has yet.

But when I was a kid, I could roll dice and play Stat O Matic all day, then play baseball games on the Atari or Intellivision, or a coin-op game. As much as I loved, and love, sabermetrics, there was always more to sports to love than just crunching numbers. If a game finds an element and is fun to play, then I don’t care about the rest.

I’m a sports gamer, but I would hate to limit myself to being just a sim sports gamer, anymore than I would limit myself from playing non-sports games.

And I did go through a sim only phase. I would say that it ruined my ability to have fun playing games. All I saw was what was wrong, as I forgot about all the sports games I grew up loving that were arcade as heck.

I do think EA should look at SMB3’s Pennant Race to give Superstar KO more to play for. They could pull off much the same addictiveness of getting in just one more game.

It all depends on what “sim” is defined. Supermega baseball is great but it still is real baseball, it’s 9 vs 9 for 9 innings, with balls and strikes, 3 outs per inning all the classic baseball rules.

If 2k releases the game and it’s 3 vs 3 or even 8 vs 8, I don’t see that ending well.

It is possible they were added prematurely, they removed them from the list and Take-Two/NFLPA still need to make an official announcement.

I doubt they would go to the trouble of signing a deal with the NFL & be stupid enough to not eventually include a deal with the NFLPA.
