What's up Chill. Good to hear from you here. If my old man memory recalls you were a Penn State guy or at least running a PSU dynasty back in the day? Anyway, thanks for saying hi. Those were some pretty fun days. Thanks for the kind words on the reports, I really enjoy being able to play the best football game I've ever played and tell a story about it.

Still playing any video football? If not, what are you up to? How is life treating you? Looking forward to any games this year? (anybody else reading let me know). Cyberpunk2077 anyone? I'm on the fence!

      2022 - Week 4 Preview - #9 Iowa at #11 Auburn

When you're in 2022 and looking for a tough team to play, a highly ranked SEC team looks like an obvious challenge. The truth is that the Tigers don't have the most talented roster out there. However, they have been playing hard-nosed, close football games and have plenty of playmakers on defense who will be ready to pounce with any slip ups.

It will be interesting to see what kind of push the Iowa defense can get against a pretty stout (and very big) defensive front, at least on the interior of the line. How will Nathan Malone and possibly Antwione Harkless react to a loud SEC road crowd and a national stage?

Ultimately, we need a great game from a very talented Hawkeye defense that looks good against this team on paper. Can make a good selection in terms of the base at the beginning of the drive? Coach Clark is known to favor the occasional offside penalty instead of burning a timeout, especially on the Hawkeyes' side of the field. That negates some of the concern about facing an aggressive, fast-paced offense such as a Gus Malzahn team.

Auburn was horrible in my dynasty until I took them over. They hadn't had more then a 8 win season and were coming off back to back 4-8 seasons before Coach Vader set the foundation for them to become winners again.

Well, that wasn't expected! But football is won and lost in trenches (cliche I know) and Auburn got the better of Iowa in that one. It is a shame to see the winning streak come to an end but on the other hand, shows that this Iowa team has some holes to work on.

Pretty much what Tearz said. Auburn was just plain better in the trenches, and Malone and Hark both couldn't make enough plays at quarterback. I don't want Iowa to lose at all, but this loss gives you some storylines for the rest of the season because after coming off back-to-back titles, there was definitely a bit of invincibility despite all the roster changes. Looking forward to seeing how the Hawkeyes respond.

Ahhh yes I did have a Penn State dynasty, good memory. I do remember First Timer, wild. Its definitely been awhile..

I started up a coaching dynasty in around February and it really took off when the quarantine hit. I've debated on posting it for awhile, even kept a little organized word doc for my own nerd-ness.

Glad to spark a little mini reunion!

Tough loss, especially when it’s due to getting beat up front. But at least like careless whisper said, you have some storylines to work with for the rest of the season.

Not the game that you want to see, but Auburn just brought the mashers along the line. Malone is the type of your QB who needs time in the pocket to feel safe to make plays, and it didn't seem like he had much of that in this one. Not to mention the lack of production generally from the running game, though the big play from the jet sweep/end around type plays are some of my favorites to see when they actually get pulled off! Just one of those days where it looked like even the weather conspired against you.

Oops: There's a mistake in there, I accidentally did this after the game I just played earlier. I'm not going to redo it, but we were 2-1 at this point following the loss not 3-1.

True. There were so many games we got lucky winning over the last three years as this win streak (and overall huge success rate) were built, and we couldn't catch the breaks in this one. It's going to happen the more close games you play. I have a sneaking suspicion we have a lot of close games coming to us this year.

I agree, it's a lot more fun when you're having some challenges, so I can't wait to see how we respond going forward. One huge key is we're just not automatic on 3rd downs anymore, this is the most obvious change. If you needed 3-5 yards there were umpteen ways that Allen could make that happen. We'll have to figure out a new identity because we went o-fer in that game.

Would be badass if you did decide to post it, or even start something anew, afresh. :-) Good group of guys here, making it feel a lot like those old days. Some of the guys that are most key to the dynasty board are busy / dealing with other things. Most of us filter in and out; I guess it's the beauty of having no new games on an annual basis, a lot of these dynasties may eventually span a decade.

Malone has a wee bit of atheticism, but you're 100% right. The weather did seem to be a thorn in our side with a lot of drops and the ball popping loose quite often, especially with Malone. We'll have to bounce back against an Indiana team that hasn't been very impresssive lately but are capable of giving us a good game.

                        Thanks Fellas!

Some big-time performances by Larry Legend and Wyckoff to save you from a shocking loss. Lloyd was incredible, and as your new likely starter I feel like the offense should revolve around him with the young quarterbacks and their inconsistencies. Crossing my fingers that he can avoid the injury bug like last season!

Goodman has better ratings than Lloyd, IIRC. Why do you think it is that Lloyd seemingly excels whenever called upon while Goodman has his fair share of struggles?

Lloyd will start again this week

Running back Larry Lloyd started last week against Indiana, and reportedly will also start this upcoming week against rival Minnesota. Coach Clark reported that Kenard Goodman was somewhat limited in practice last week, although he did not miss a practice. Goodman ended up seeing very limited usage last week, although Clark expects that to change this week. Nevertheless, Lloyd will see a second week in a row starting. According to Clark, Lloyd tired more quickly than normal facing a fresh defense each drive, but indicated "he's still a hoss."

Hawkeyes battling LSU for a pair of important recruits

"With verbak commitments expected to begin coming fast and furious in the coming weeks, Iowa and LSU are neck and neck for a pair of recruits that could sway the fortunes of either team in the coming years. Jerry Adams, a defensive tackle out of Rockland, Maine, has whittled down his top two which now includes Iowa and LSU. He plans to visit Iowa in Week 11, and LSU in Week 12. Meanwhile, Hayden Polk, a tight end out of Grapevine, Texas, is still considering at least six schools and has a half dozen additional offers. He is scheduled to visit LSU in week 12, and Iowa during week 13.

The Hawkeyes would probably be happy to have either of these players headline their class. Adams is a monster interior run stuffer and penetrator whereas Polk is a true down the field threat in the mold of ex Hawkeyes TE George Kittle."

A pair of Hawkeyes are back to full health

"Backup tight end Robert Dyches (back) and strong safety Peter Miller (finger) are expected to be back in the lineup this week. Miller missed just one week with a finger injury and Drew Farmer played well starting in his place, while Jaivonn Bender filled in at strong safety in some sets. Dyches will be an upgrade backing up starter Sweet Terry.

"Two tight end sets are a big part of our plan this year, but we had to back off just a little the past two weeks with Robbie out," said Clark. "It will be nice to have him back in there."

I don't follow the thing with the editor very closely but I keep wondering if at some point somebody will break down all the code in the game to find out if - essentially - ratings are exactly as they say.

There are other positions where I see players over or under perform and over the long term I try to go with their play on the field instead of OVR. My starter at RT this year kept getting sort of bent in half while pass blocking... The good DE's at Auburn basically just manhandled him and he looked like a soda can getting crunched as they went by him. He is the former walk on that improved a lot. -So he's out for now, after giving up 4 sacks in 2.5 games. His ratings looked fine but he might not get back in there... lol. Joe Gibson my CB just seems to produce turnovers year after year better than guys with better ratings. Running back and QB seem like the positions where you could most easily be convinced of a difference in actual ability compared to OVR since they get so many chances.

Here are some notes on my Iowa backs.

Nigel Atkinson 5.7 ypc - 92 OVR. 91 SPD, 97 ACC - "steady eddie" type with good athleticism. The original star runner at Iowa with Coach Clark, but didn't break many long gains. In general, I rarely would break big gains to be honest.

Ahmad Horne 4.2 ypc - 84 OVR, 93 SPD, 90 ACC - Supposed to be our "speed" back or more of a third down guy and was slated to be the starter after Atkinson left. He ended getting something like 25 carries as a senior - He had a lot of carries throughout his career and by the time he was a senior it was just a very short leash. The 4.2 ypc he has as a senior was more like 3.8 for his career. He just stunk at running the ball and would go down easily on contact and holes just rarely would open for him - He did win returner of the year as a senior. His ratings on paper are just as good as Larry Lloyd or better, across the board.

Larry Lloyd 7.2 ypc - 84 OVR, 94 SPD, 87 ACC - Early in his career, Lloyd is in Barry Sanders/Etienene/Melvin Gordon / Rashaad Penny / Reggie Bush territory as far as yards per carry goes. I expect this to drop if he continues to start as he would often come in with the defense a little tired and break one. Regardless, he just seems to break a lot of long runs. With all of the same settings (some adjustments made in the cpu's favor in fact), he just breaks more long runs than any player I've had. He is just explosive, he plows through contact in the short area when need be even though his STR rating isn't all that and he's "only" 210 lbs. but when he has a hole he always seems to get through it well.

Goodman - 93 OVR, 92 SPD, 95 ACC - Goodman is more likely to get hung up in traffic, trip on someone, slowed by light contact, or have the hole dissipate as he's trying to get through. All of his "RB moves" ratings are way better than Lloyd, even his STR is way better but some of that is offset by the fact that he's 183 lbs. At 5.1 YPC in his career, Goodman is no slouch running the ball and has had some AWESOME performances but he just isn't as explosive in terms of long speed. He has a career long of 29 yards, whereas Lloyd must already have at least 10 runs of over 40. ed.: I have six verified gains of 29 yards or longer for Lloyd and believe there are a couple more in games where his longest was 50+.

I can't explain it man. Thanks for stopping by I appreciate it bro.
