    Recruiting Notes

    Recruiting Notes - Update

We've narrowed our list down to around 13 players we're fighting for. We have another few players we're working on including some additional Iowa guys during a down recruiting year in state. In a year where we lost Damarja Mesun as a transfer to Wisconsin, we needed linebackers and we're likely to get at least two, including Dez Dillon. We are the only scholarship offer for Dillon even now. Now fully scouted, it's clear that he could probably play anywhere from defensive end to any linebacker position, to safety. He just doesn't have a weakness. Even at 6'6" he has far better agility than the other linebackers we're recruiting. With the way the game scales players and OVR ratings, I'm guessing he'll have a super low AWR rating. So there's that.

We still have a fight on our hands for DT Jerry Adams against LSU but he remains the player we covet the most even just because he's so unique and players with his skill set are hard to find.

We're preparing a sneak attack on CB Ty Fenton and #1 T Trevor Salary when we get locked out. We weren't able to compete on these guys early on, but with the way the Big Ten is playing early in the season, conference prestige has pushed back up and we are very competitive in the weekly bonus on these players. We're waiting in the shadows for the right time to unleash a Coach Clark visit where he'll use that Silver tongue to get us right back in the race.

Two on the 35 man board sign with other teams

Oklahoma and Nebraska have signed players off our original 35-man board.

        2022 - Week 6 Preview - #9 Iowa at Minnesota

Iowa have to play better if they expect to beat the talented Minnesota Golden Gophers on the road this week. The Gophers are a team that have no hesitation in the offensive game with a talented, accurate quarterback and one of the best running backs in the nation in the speedy Andre Davis. There is no faster runner in the nation than the senior, who has topped 1,200 rushing yards each of year of his career, with 4,304 career rushing yards and 41 career touchdowns to his name. Not typically a major force in the passing game, he is still dangerous any time the team is able to get him the ball in space and has 10 of his 23 career receptions this year, for 122 yards.

Quarterback Chris Todd is not a scrambler but it will be important to watch for that key scramble on third down that could surprise an unaware defense. However, he is a very talented passer with a good arm and exceptional accuracy, as well as heightened awareness.

Todd's targets include a tough, sure-handed possession receiver in Pete Taylor a young speedster in Alfred Hill, and a big, athletic wildcard in Darren Stewart. Tight end Mike Martindale has the size, speed, hands, and awareness to give defenses nightmares, and it will be a point of emphasis for Iowa in practice this week.

The Gophers' defense has the size, speed, and strength to possibly give the Hawkeyes flashbacks to the Auburn squad at times, although they are speed challenged in the secondary. The Hawkeyes have had little success going deep this season and have to balance the idea of keeping the Gophers honest and completing passes that move the chains.

        Lake's comments on the Hawkeyes

Jimmy Lake was asked about the significance of facing the two-time defending national champs in every interview he has had this week.

"Tell you what, we can't be scared," said Lake, sounding highly enthusiastic about the process of pitting his first-year squad against the Hawkeyes.

"We have the type of team that can give them trouble. I'm confident of that. We have a lot of talent. This isn't exactly the type of squad I see us having eventually as you know I'm all about the secondary, but there are a lot of components there that if we put them to good use, can give a team like Iowa trouble. So we're feeling confident, certainly not cocky, but we have a great chance to go against a team that will show us where we are. And let's call out the elephant in the room. We aren't going against Eddie Allen here. That has to give us some added confidence. So we're a confident bunch and we're going to give it all we've got. We're excited and I would even say impatient for the day to come."

H2P, let's goooooo! Good to see Pitt pull out a big win and off to a big start so far this year in your file. Another big win for you, looked like Malone finally has a solid day chucking ball around and Larry just doing what he does and racking up yards and TDs again, which is huge. Interesting to see Vessel have a great game, he seems like he's becoming a solid contributor for you as a freshman, which is a shame that he rolled such a poor WE rating for you that he may not drastically improve, because he is already becoming a key contributor.

Solid look also at all of the recruits on the board; I don't know what it is about the player generation, but Maine always seems to churn up some sick defensive lineman! Currently 2 of my DEs are from Maine, and Adams looks like an absolute stud. Must be something about those Maine winters! Looks like you're pretty set otherwise for a big recruiting class, as those interested guys are all very solid, and even still having a chance at the top tackle with the Unlock move is smart. I always hate when I lose out on a guy because the battle is just me and one other school so I can't use the Unlock option versus when it's a big battle and I can Unlock because so many teams are still in it.

Minnesota looks like a solid opponent, and with no obvious weaknesses on that defense it will be interesting to see how you adjust early on in the game to find what it is working for you and attack it to try and get the win!

Thanks bro - Our recruiting class is way beyond my expectations. I've got one signing now, (Thomas) and it is the corner that was originally one we weren't going to recruit as we thought he wasn't as talented as Guzman. But based on what I call a "soft pass" where the recruit has an issue with one of the things he's interested but he's not refusing to talk to you yet (what do you call that) I went with Thomas as the one we gave all the love to. He turned out +7, 81 OVR with incredible speed and all that - He is how I learned that in fact, the 40 times do change when their speed jumps if you go back to the list of players. Can't wait to see this guy on the field. In no class have I ever gotten as lucky in terms of other schools not challenging for key recruits that ended up being gems so yeah. It's going to be small, and it's going to be awesome.

Minnesota was a little disappointing, you will see the report here hahha. They ran the ball well and I was happy with that but....

Vessel is going to be a really good player for us even if he just ends up an 85 OVR guy. He's already got the ability to get open, catch the ball, and run after the catch. As of now, he is in the slot and running a lot of short routes as well as screens and stuff like that but in the future he could move outside and his physicality will allow him to get open I'm sure.

That clip of Lloyd trucking Mann is fantastic! Just a really, really solid day all around - Malone was efficient and in control, and Larry Legend did Larry Legend things offensively. And then the defense was opportunistic and really seemed to frustrate the Gopher passing attack. I know you were thinking about running with Minnesota in a separate thread, so I hope that Lake can build them up to be an annual contender and give the Hawkeyes another big rival in the Big Ten!

Malone really coming into his own! You're right he does have some talent, just has to try to stay within himself and he can put up a big game like that. Larry right back on track, and Vessel continuing to be your X-factor offensively, seems like he catch and run and is making some key plays. How has the other 5 star Kijenmij looked?

Another nice win - way to pull away in the 2H! On the other sideline, it looks like Coach Lake has his work cut out for him - but I’m sure the Gophers will get rolling soon.

Thanks for the reply man! Haha it was almost too ridiculous to show, but it shows the amount of force that Lloyd has been blessed with despite STR / BTK / TRK ratings that aren't standout when you look at them.

As for Minnesota, I wanted to have a somewhat young, new head coach come into the league and I planned to control them, but when it came down to it, there are too many teams in the Big Ten that I don't want to ruin their seasons. I just can't do that. If they're playing a team that is the dregs that year I might play them just for fun and try to avoid bad losses for them, but that and occasional out of conference games are all I would do. I really just wanted more playing without much more reporting but in the end probably won't do much of either.

Yeah he had a solid game there. Got his accuracy going a little earlier. Have to work the guys into accuracy most games but he was solid early.

I think Malone will be kind of an up and down guy, but if you can keep the lows from being disastrous he could be solid. Vessel has been a great addition and has been a really nice fit in the slot. Kijenmij has been solid but definitely less spectacular than I would have thought. At times he has gotten shut down for most of the game but managed to make a TFL or something so he's been solid for a freshman, for sure. Thanks for checking in good sir.

They just got cracked by Northwestern. I watched the game from the upcoming week, and the Wildcats just ROLLED them, dominated on the ground and in the air. As disappointing as the D was against Iowa, they were a good deal worse against NU so they have some work to do still, for sure. Back to the drawing board for Coach Lake.

                        Thanks fellas!

Halligan will probably miss the rest of the season

Week 7 bye. Lukas Halligan, the leading receiver for Iowa the past two seasons and starting to come around this year after a slow start, went a little too hard during a practice rep.

The pass was a little high, and nobody was going to care too much whether it was caught or not. However, Halligan was lined up on the outside against Joe Gibson, who has had a hot and cold season and recently watched Lionel Robinson cut into his playing time. Gibson and Halligan were getting after it more than normal due to the situation each has found themselves in.

Halligan went for the high pass. Gibson made sure he felt it with a little push that upended him. Halligan came down awkwardly on his shoulder and had to be transported to the hospital. Gibson and Halligan have had no prior issues, said Clark.

"It was just a football play that unfortunately was in practice. We want them to go full speed in practice sometimes, and there's a fine line that was crossed in terms of going up in the air for a pass as well as Joe giving him that extra momentum. I don't blame either of them and I know Lukas understands it wans't intentional by Joe. But we're going to miss having Halligan on the field," said Clark.

Halligan has already stated he will be working to get back this season, but it is highly doubtful.

Gophers lose Andre Davis for an extended Period

Running back Andre Davis suffered an injury to his elbow in week 7. It appeared he may be able to come back shortly, however, after a second opinion it has been determined he has a fractured elbow. Davis, among the handful of fastest players in the entire nation, will be out for the forseeable future.

                                More Recruiting News

The Hawkeyes added Laterion Thomas to the list of verbal commitments which now numbers two. There are 3-4 very talented players virtually guaranteed to sign with the Hawkeyes. Elsewhere, things have gotten a lot more complicated on the recruitment of several other players.
