Amazing game. The freaking taunting penalty bailed you out! I forgot about those, what an amazing turn of events. So happy to see CMU get that third win.

Congrats. Now lets go get another one. Did the win help with the Recruits. Well it was good to see Keyes with another semi productive day throwing the ball, it was even better to just see you pound the rock on the ground.

Not to mention that you doubled up Duke offensively, and seeing Keyes finally pass for a reasonable amount of yards feels like an April Fool's Joke, haha. Nice to see Manning contribute in the pass game out of the backfield as well, becoming more than just a one trick pony. Classic bad team thing to have a couple monster games at the end of the season and really raise the expectations for the following season to a ridiculous level!
Outside of the turnovers, that game there is what Keyes' best can bring to the table. He's dynamic in the running game and can extend plays, so if I can find the right balance of using him and Manning running the ball, it will give him easier windows to find receivers and come away with a 400-yard day. I've struggled mightily with him these first two seasons, but he's rated an 83 so my hope has always been that he figures it out rather than turn it over to a backup. Using Manning in the pass game was definitely something I wanted to add with Cousins out, but this was the first time where I could really get him in space to make some plays. And splitting him out wide allowed Satele to have some holes to run through in his little time, which of course moved the chains and kept drives alive.

Expectations are certainly rising after these last two wins! Western Michigan and Northern Illinois might provide more of a test to end the season, but I think we're finally starting to make some strides and could be ready for a good 2009!

It's amazing how those penalties play such a factor in these games! I was frustrated that I threw that pick with Keyes in the red zone because I should have seen the DE drop into coverage with just two rushing me, and almost didn't realize that I had a second chance because of the CPU taunting me. I've been caught a few times this season for taunting because the CPU wants to my kicker to celebrate hitting an extra point or something randomly, so I've made sure to X out of the celebration regardless before making a note about the play in my dynasty document!

Thanks Deuce, hoping I can rattle off a few more to finish strong here! I'll have recruit news here after this post, we had two of my remaining targets in for officials (C Joey Muhammad, QB Bryan Williams) after the tailback I was chasing committed to Tennessee the week prior. I have to think the win, even if it was against an 0-10 Duke team, should give me their commitments!

Thanks for reading guys! These last two games have been a blast and I'm hoping for more exciting ones like them to end the season, because as moose said, expectations are rising for the 2009 campaign! I'll have the NCAA/Rivals posts here in a few minutes.

            Muhammad commits to Carnegie Mellon
Carnegie Mellon has received a verbal commitment from three-star center Joey Muhammad (Winnipeg, Manitoba) after his official visit this past weekend.

“It really was an easy decision,” said Muhammad over the phone. “CMU was on me from the start and never let up. Finally being able to visit the school and meet my future teammates and coaches sealed the deal. I appreciate all the schools that recruited me, but I was always going to become a Tartan in the end.”

Muhammad will give the Tartans a second Canadian on the offensive line, joining current freshman offensive tackle Jason Baker. He is expected to immediately start at center.

Williams gives soft verbal to Tartans
Three-star quarterback Bryan Williams (Charlottesville, Va.) has given a soft verbal commitment to Carnegie Mellon this past weekend, and will take his official visit to Virginia Tech on Saturday.

The six-foot-four, 210-pound signal-caller reportedly loved his visit to Pittsburgh, but wanted to keep his options open for another weekend. The Hokies are set to face Williams’ hometown Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday, who didn’t offer a scholarship to the quarterback.

            Cousins returns from injury
Redshirt junior wide receiver Kevin Cousins returns this weekend for Carnegie Mellon’s tilt at Western Michigan after missing four weeks with a torn shoulder muscle.

Cousins, a transfer from Penn State who sat out the 2007 season, has had a disappointing debut season in Pittsburgh, accumulating just 19 catches for 249 yards and a touchdown.

Williams needs renamed to Smalls. So I can yell "Your killing me Smalls" well that or maybe Keyes if I have to watch him play QB for another year.

I thought he'd commit for sure since he had us at #1, but apparently not. Unfortunately, with him taking his visit to VT next weekend, I have a feeling I'm going to have to sign two quarterbacks in the off-season period, since from past experience I remember targets who don't commit on a visit usually end up going elsewhere if they have more visits ahead of them - especially if the other visit is a big-time school.

                Hopefully I'm wrong!

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Waldo Stadium | No television

Team Overview (B- overall, C+ offense, B- defense)
Western Michigan has had a disappointing season as it enters the final Mid-American Conference (MAC) game of its schedule, with four straight losses and a 3-7 overall mark. The Broncos last won on Oct. 18 against Ohio, 25-17, and also own wins against Toledo (23-21) and Navy (35-32) in the season opener. WMU had a brief 14-0 lead three weeks ago at West Virginia before getting routed, 55-14, and is set to host #3 Oklahoma in the 2008 finale.

Senior quarterback Tim Hiller (125.0 QB rtg., 201-352, 2,360 yards, 19 TD, 11 INT) leads a solid passing attack with fifth-year Jamarko Simmons (51 catches, 746 yards, 7 TD) as his top receiving target. The Broncos also feature redshirt sophomore Jamelle Murray (31 catches, 278 yards, 2 TD) and senior Schneider Julien (51 catches, 392 yards, 3 TD) in the slot, and redshirt junior Matt Stevens (24 catches, 395 yards, 2 TD) factoring into the attack as the starting tight end. Last year’s starter, fifth-year senior Branden Ledbetter, has been hampered by injury this season after totaling 402 yards and six scores on 24 catches in 2007. When WMU does run the ball, junior tailback Brandon West (127 carries, 706 yards, 6 TD) gets the majority of the touches.

Redshirt senior Zach Davidson (38 tackles, 6 sacks) has taken advantage of the double teams junior Greg Marshall (31 tackles, 1 sack) at the defensive end spots. Fifth-year defensive tackle Nick Varcadipane (48 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 FR) was All-MAC Second Team last year and should earn all-conference accolades again. At linebacker, fourth-year Austin Pritchard (56 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 INT) and fifth-year Boston McCornell (58 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 1 FR) lead the way. Senior free safety Louis Delmas (35 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 INT, 1 FF, 4 FR) is the unit’s top playmaker, and should hear his name called in the NFL Draft next April.

Junior college transfer Stan Skinner (11-15 FG, 23-23 XP) has been reliable in his first season kicking for the Broncos, and he’ll do the punting on Saturday as well with freshman Terry Jones (25 punts, 1,155 yards, 46.2 avg.) suspended for the second time this year. Simmons (30 kick returns, 626 yards; 18 punt returns, 128 yards) is WMU’s top returning threat.

Season 3, Game 11: Carnegie Mellon at Western Michigan

Broncos Romp Tartans in Road Finale
CMU gave up 28 straight points to start the game and never recovered, snapping a two-game winning streak

by Alicia Brown, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reporter

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Looking to keep the momentum going after a pair of victories, Carnegie Mellon instead stumbled in its penultimate game of the season as the Tartans were drubbed by Western Michigan, 42-10, this afternoon in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.

Carnegie Mellon (3-8, 2-5 MAC) fell behind 28-0 midway through the second quarter and never recovered, as its secondary was torched for five touchdown passes. Western Michigan (4-7, 3-5 MAC) quarterback Tim Hiller threw all five, three going to Jamarko Simmons and the other two to tailback Brandon West.

“Today was really disappointing because we had been playing really well,” said third-year head coach John Elliott. “I thought we’d be able to keep that ball rolling after the two wins and near-defeat at Akron, but Western Michigan hit us in the mouth there in the second quarter and we couldn’t do anything about it. I hope that we can learn from this, and know that we have to keep working regardless of how well we’re feeling heading into a game. This shouldn’t have been this bad.”

After the Broncos’ touchdown on the opening drive, both offenses went cold for a few possessions. That changed at the end of the frame, as the hosts drove the ball downfield and began the second quarter with a 20-yard hookup from Hiller to Simmons.

A fumble from Pete Carlson on the ensuing kickoff put the ball back in WMU’s hands, and its quickly took advantage with another Hiller-to-Simmons connection – this one of 24 yards. Following a three-and-out from the Tartans, Hiller again found Simmons on a deep post for a 43-yard score to turn 7-0 lead to a 28-0 one in a span of 5:20.

CMU answered with an extended drive with Justin Keyes cashing in on a quarterback sneak. The Tartans then forced a punt on the defensive end and put together another long sequence, only to be held to a field goal after a Keyes touchdown pass to Kevin Cousins was broken up with a big hit.

The visitors had another chance to crawl back into the game, only to see their opening drive of the second half foiled by a Nate Satele fumble. The Broncos would take advantage and seal up the win, as Hiller connected with West out of the backfield for a 12-yard score.

Matt Johnson and Hayden Temple both intercepted Hiller defensively, while Andrew Miller brought down the WMU signal-caller twice. Mark Toth and Johnson also netted a sack in the defeat.

Carnegie Mellon completes its inaugural FBS season next Friday night when it hosts Northern Illinois.

Fell back to earth a bit in this one, I have to think that the fumble really changed the course of the contest. That swing from trying to make it 14-7 (hopefully) to being down 21-0 was a gigantic change in momentum, plus probably put you behind the eight ball in terms of your offensive gameplan.

You're absolutely right and with the momentum meter in these older games (introduced in NCAA 07, I believe), when a big play like that happens, it just makes it that much harder to try and come back from a deficit. I wish there was a way to turn that function off to be honest, because a lot of Keyes' interceptions come when the momentum meter is completely full for the CPU, and it makes passing the ball even more difficult.

                        Thanks for checking in!

Honest can't remember if you can shut it off in the older games, but I know you can in 2014. Rough day for Keyes and even Manning. Hiller and Simmons really worked over the secondary in the 2nd Quarter.

Hopefully you can finish out with a win.

Williams goes all in on CMU
One week after giving a soft verbal to Carnegie Mellon, three-star quarterback Bryan Williams (Charlottesville, Va.) solidified his stance on the Tartans by pledging his solid commitment.

Williams, a six-foot-four, 210-pound signal-caller from Charlottesville High School, made an official visit to Virginia Tech over the weekend as the Hokies faced his hometown Virginia Cavaliers. He is the third commitment of CMU’s Class of 2009, joining three-star defensive tackle Matt Burnsides (Hyattsville, Md.) and three-star center Joey Muhammad (Winnipeg, Manitoba).

“I figured that I’d take all my visits and then see how I felt after all of them,” said Williams over the phone. “But as I was at Virginia Tech, I just kept thinking about my time at Carnegie Mellon. And that really sealed it there – why delay the inevitable? I’m so excited to become a Tartan.”

                              Elliott to miss finale
Senior defensive captain Devon Elliott will reportedly miss his final collegiate game after suffering a knee injury last weekend at Western Michigan.

Elliott, a three-year starter at defensive tackle, dislocated his knee in the third quarter of CMU’s 42-10 loss to the Broncos. He has accumulated 25 tackles, two sacks, and a fumble recovery this season.

Tartans to honor 19 on Senior Night
Carnegie Mellon will recognize the careers of 19 senior football players prior to its season finale Friday night against Northern Illinois.

Suiting up for the final time in Tartan colors are: quarterback Warren Culberson, tailback Tramon McCollum, wide receiver Pete Carlson, tight end Calvin Scott, offensive tackles Trevor Barron and Jon Young, guards Andy Clarke and Leroy Webb, center Rob Hill, defensive ends Jared Davis and Chuck Hagler, defensive tackles Devon Elliott, Brandon Kellner, and Early Morris, linebacker Robert Graves, cornerback Raymond Cooper, safeties Xavier Bennett and Braylon Cunningham, and punter Brad Jones.

Carlson, Hill, and Elliott are the only seniors who have been starters every season since CMU made the transition to Division I athletics.
