Re: Polygon EA UFC 4 Article

Thanks for posting! Different perspective and a bit more detail compared to some other articles. Two things caught my eye:

"On the grappling front, the developers have added what Hayes referred to as “grappling controls for the rest of us.” The new left-stick scheme is simple: Push up to get up, left to start a submission, and right to mount your opponent and start pounding away. The complicated positional transitions of old are still available for hardcore series veterans, and there’s an in-between setting, “Hybrid,” that shows you which legacy controls apply to which left-stick move you’re doing — it’s a way to learn the transition controls.

Submissions no longer rely on moving “break walls” with the right stick, as in UFC 3. There are two new submission minigames in UFC 4 that have you chase your opponent around the interface by using the triggers and sticks. The mechanics will be familiar to people who have played other wrestling and MMA games, and they’re “a lot less complicated to explain to your friend on the couch,” said Hayes."

I hope this means that UD3/UFC 1 style grappling controls are back - in any case, I'm not sure how the old circle fill thing would work anymore considering they've adapted three new control schemes (thank god, because I hated it).

Love the change to a more WWE 2K/UD3 style sub system. Best one there is, in my opinion. Hope we get the Beta soon, just wanna play!

Surely a game changer is allowed to come in here and describe how these grappling controls work. Since the info is out there they should be fine under the NDA.

I don’t know if the changes to button mapping for strikes (hold button for more damaging strike) sounds like an improvement to me. A bit worried I get results I dont want..

So is there a new grappling system or is this just basically a simple control scheme for the same system?

For career mode I like the fact you can stay in the minor league as long as you want

I get the impression that it’s mainly just new controls plus new positions rather than a totally new grappling system. Ground and pound is new though.

I wonder how they could improve the ground game. The only major change I could think of is changing the denials. That would be big but wouldn't feel like an overhaul unless they used the UD3 UD3 transition blocking for transitions. So it would be different.

Yeah I don't know if the buttons on the controller are responsive enough for this in the middle of a heated exchange.

I'm optimistic though. I thought I'd hate the shoulder modifiers but I got so used to them I mess up playing UD3 now.

This is something GPD worked on a lot and he said great care was taken in mapping and refining the controls so as to be responsive. It has something to do with animation blending I’m sure. He said the controls are actually 1 frame more responsive than they were in UFC 3

You already asked this question before and got an proper answer from someone else, and this issue have been talked about many time before. By improving we mean "content wise", by adding more positions, animations for each position, like 50/50 guard, butterfly guard, back body triangle and back crucifix mixing with strikes and so on. UD3 had most of these positions availible 10+ years ago along with more different subs, that was "one" of the main reasons the grappling felt more dynamic and fun aside from it's fluid GnP.

Those are gimmicky positions that don't actually add any mechanical depth.

I'm also pretty sure that the controls they describe in the article refer to the simplified alternative controls whereas more experienced players have access to something more similar to UFC 3's controls.
                        ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yeah I agree with new positions. There's already knee on belly. So maybe there are more positions or transitions.

But what I mean is it wouldn't be too different with new positions. They have to change denials for the ground to feel more different.

Also a nice little detail that there is boxing only in the career mode at the beginning. I hope we can also select this ruleset outside the career mode.
Looking forward to do some boxing only tournaments in the backyard venue with Kimbo
