Re: The Rise of the Carnegie Mellon Tartans (NCAA Football 07)

by Jeff Greenberg, Carnegie Mellon insider for Rivals.com

        Toth fully healthy for Pitt
Sophomore middle linebacker Mark Toth has recovered from his chest injury suffered in last week’s 59-28 win over Yale and will start this Saturday in the Steel City Showdown against Pitt.

Toth, who won MAC Freshman of the Year accolades and was named Associated Press Freshman All-America last season, left last weekend’s win in the first half with what was eventually revealed as a bruised sternum. The sophomore had seven tackles in the Tartans’ opening-week loss to No. 25 Rutgers.

Manning named MAC Offensive Player of the Week
Junior runningback Jim Manning was honored by the MAC after his performance against Yale over the weekend, earning Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Manning rushed for 286 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, nearly averaging 10 yards per carry (9.6). The 286 rushing yards are the second most in a single game for the junior, who broke the Carnegie Mellon school record as a freshman with 321 yards on Oct. 27, 2007 against Villanova.

Washington out seven weeks, denied medical redshirt
Sophomore strong safety Elvis Washington left last weekend’s win over Yale with an elbow injury, and it has been announced that he will miss seven weeks with a dislocated elbow.

Carnegie Mellon applied to the NCAA for Washington to receive a medical redshirt, but it was denied because of projected injury length. The sophomore has three tackles and an interception in two games this year, after posting 33 tackles and two interceptions as a freshman. Redshirt freshman Bobby Magnum (3 tackles) will replace him in the starting lineup.

Washington is set to return on Nov. 7 at Miami (Ohio).

Ellis keeps Carnegie Mellon in top five
Three-star defensive end Steven Ellis (Shelby, Ohio) has kept Carnegie Mellon in consideration, as he trimmed his college list from eight to five schools over the weekend.

Ellis, a six-foot-six, 225-pound lineman from Shelby High School, has Michigan as the favorite for his services, followed by Iowa, CMU, Louisville, and Notre Dame. He would compete for a starting spot with the Tartans right away, as the team currently starts sophomore David Brown and true freshman Zac Hood at the end spots.

I think it's safe to say we knew that was a game where a "W" was to be expected, but it was great to see the Offense clicking. Now the question is how good will they be against Pitt and Mac opponents. I am not jumping on the Keyes Bandwagon yet, but it really does look like he is playing so much better in a offense that seems to suit his abilities. Was great to see Manning have a big game too.

How's recruiting looking. I see a couple WR's and TE's on your current target list and you removed the 3* QB. Are you happy with your current QB's on the roster or just going to try and add a 2* in the late signings.

Obviously London is a cool name, but what recruit do you feel is the must land out of that group

I wouldn't be buying in completely with Keyes yet either, but he has taken a big step forward this year and is a natural fit for the spread. He's still not perfect, but against a bad team like Yale you can really see how dynamic he can be when clicking.

I should have mentioned that Removed on the recruiting update means the player left me out of their top five or three, it's not me deciding to stop recruiting them. I will probably try to bring in another quarterback in the offseason to redshirt, since I have pretty solid depth there now with Keyes/Wilson/Williams. Biggest need from the group is probably one of the wide receivers and the defensive tackle - I'll be pretty thin at WR with Cousins graduating next year, and I need someone beside Burnsides at the DT position to really plug up the middle.

Carnegie Mellon Tartans (1-1) at Pittsburgh Panthers (0-1)
              Saturday, September 19, 2009 | 3:30 PM (ET)
Pittsburgh, Pa. – Heinz Field | FSN Pittsburgh

Team Overview (B overall, B+ offense, B- defense)
Pitt opened the 2009 season two weeks ago at bitter in-state rival Penn State, and led the nation’s No. 5 ranked team after the opening 15 minutes, 14-0. That advantage didn’t last long, however, as the Panthers gave up 21 unanswered to close the half and ultimately fell by a 35-28 score.

Highly touted recruit Pat Bostick is in his first year as starting quarterback, and the junior threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns in Happy Valley. Third-year tailback LeSean McCoy (132 carries, 794 yards, 9 TD; 18 catches, 232 yards, 3 TD in 2008) split time with LaRod Stephens-Howling last season and is Pitt’s top offensive weapon. Bostick has a talented receiving corps to throw to in redshirt senior Oderick Turner (51 catches, 663 yards, 4 TD in 2008), junior Aundre Wright (34 catches, 496 yards, 8 TD in 2008), fourth-year junior T.J. Porter (50 catches, 517 yards, 8 TD in 2008), and senior tight end Nate Byham (15 catches, 223 yards, 3 TD in 2008).

The Panthers return three All-Big East Second Team selections on defense in junior defensive end Greg Romeus, redshirt junior linebacker Michael Toerper, and senior cornerback Jovanni Chappel. Romeus and fellow third-year end Jabaal Sheard combined for six sacks last season, and fifth-year senior Ernest Williams tallied seven tackles and a sack in his first career start at Penn State. Toerper (71 tackles, 4 sacks, 1 INT, 2 FF in 2008) leads a talented linebacker corps with senior Dorin Dickerson (54 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 INT in 2008) and junior Justin Hargrove (39 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 INT, 1 FF, 1 FR in 2008) flanking him, while Chappell has classmate and three-year starter Aaron Berry opposite him at cornerback. The safety position is inexperienced for Pitt, with true freshman Lamont Sutherland starting beside first-year starter Irvan Brown (18 tackles, 1 INT, 1 FF, 1 TD in 2008), a redshirt senior.

Redshirt senior Lucas Stone (3 punts, 159 yards, 44.3 net avg.) was an All-Big East Second Team pick in 2008, whereas freshman Dee Jones made all four of his extra point attempts to begin his collegiate career. McCoy (1 kick return, 46 yards) and Turner (3 kick returns, 68 yards) return kicks and punts for the Panthers, both being threats to score touchdowns on that front.

Definitely going to be a tough one, but I feel more confident about keeping this one close compared to previous years. If I can string out a few more wins here in the early stage of the season, then hopefully I'll be able land more recruits in this in-season period.

Season 4, Game 3: Carnegie Mellon at Pittsburgh - Steel City Showdown

Improving Tartans Hampered by Gaffes in Loss to Pitt
Carnegie Mellon missed three field goals and threw two pick sixes in its 36-8 defeat to the Panthers

by Jayson Thomas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter

PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- In the fourth renewal of the newly-dubbed Steel City Showdown, it was Pitt who would have the upper hand once again, as it defeated Carnegie Mellon, 36-8, this afternoon at Heinz Field.

Carnegie Mellon (1-2) equipped itself better than the previous three seasons, with a pair of game-changing turnovers and awful kicking performance mainly contributing to the 28-point gap. Pitt (1-1) outgained the Tartans in total offense, 396-265, but the visitors were able to run the ball successfully with Jim Manning, as he averaged 5.4 yards per carry and gained 129 in all.

“We handled ourselves much better this year than in previous ones,” said CMU fourth-year head coach John Elliott. “The score doesn’t suggest it, but we were competitive and definitely made Pitt work to win this. Obviously we’d like to do better on the scoreboard and even perform better overall than what we did today, but I think a neutral observer can watch this game and see the progress we’re making, even if the difference was four touchdowns.”

CMU made its first big mistake late in the first quarter, when after a Panther punt, Justin Keyes threw it behind Stephen Carter over the middle and Justin Hargrove ran the interception back for a 28-yard touchdown. That would be the only score of the opening 30 minutes, as Jon Foster missed field goals of 44 and 36 yards in the second frame, and Pitt made it 14-0 early in the third quarter with a Pat Bostick two-yard toss to Shane Brooks.

The Tartans answered with a long, sustained drive, capping off a nine-play effort with a Manning three-yard plunge. CMU inconveniently then went for two and got it with Keyes’ legs, trimming the deficit to 14-8. However, another missed field goal from Foster stopped the visitors from making it 14-11, and Bostick finished off an extended Pitt drive with a 22-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Porter. LeSean McCoy added a two-point conversion to make it 22-8.

Keyes’ second mistake came on the ensuing drive, as he underthrew Kevin Cousins in the flat and found Michael Toerper instead. Toerper ran the interception back 35 yards for the Panthers’ second pick six, and following another empty drive by CMU, Bostick threw his third touchdown pass with 5:06 to go by connecting with Aundre Turner for 41 yards.

“(Carnegie Mellon is) better over there, there’s no doubt about it,” said Pitt head coach Dave Wannstedt. “We were running some pretty vanilla stuff on offense and defense the last few years, but I knew that we’d have our work cut out for us this time around. After our (opening week) loss to Penn State, it was nice to have a bye and refocus, and really put forth a strong performance today.”

Bostick finished 21-of-29 passing for 234 yards and three touchdowns. McCoy didn’t see the end zone outside of his two-point conversion, but he did accumulate 115 yards rushing on just 14 carries.

Carnegie Mellon heads into Mid-American Conference (MAC) play next week when it travels to preseason favorite Ball State.

Figured the loss was coming, but a good effort in the run game. Shady tore you guys up, no surprise there. Pick-sixes made it look worse than it was. Keep improving and maybe you guys win this game next year.

H2P babyyyyyyy! Glad to see things are getting more competitive though, it's always easier to build a rivalry when your 'rival' actually is a threat to win once in a while! The turnovers killed you on the scoreboard, so you take those away and things were relatively close even though Pitt did very well in the yardage department. I think this is a good sign that as long as you keep the football in your hands in conference play, I think you should have a solid season this year finally.
